there was a young nation -a dynamic, intelligent, agile youth, brave enough to refuse aid from the United States of America, believing in being revolutionaries, believing to change their country’s faith for the better. The political environment was vigorous and the Indonesian Communist Party was popular. Then, on the night of 30 September 1965 this youthful
nation was suddenly paralyzed, witnessing the bloodiest period in the modern history of
Indonesia. For a long time, no one was able
to stop the violence and killings targeting communists across Java and its surrounding islands. A youthful nation surrendered and closed its eyes...
a brave young artist named Iwan Effendi embarks on a long journey to tell the stories that were never told before, buried in the flow of time. Like a messenger, he brings to the people of this generation the truth about the past and hopes that by understanding these stories,
tragedy like this will never happen again.

In a never-ending story, someone told
A treasure that may remind me of that big melee my grandfather, he was fifty.
Here I tell you,
my friends, a story Not a story to make you laugh Not a story everyone loves It’s a story of that tree

A gloomy afternoon
His right hand holds a pale moon His left holds the soul of a stranger
Here, fishy, fishy, fishy! I bring you yummy, yummy bait I promise, to not come late So you don’t lose your appetite
A gloomy afternoon A little boy, crying for a red balloon
He was no bigger than a cocoon.

In white feathers, they can’t be tamed No one knows where they go each morning
But the tree never looks empty
as the afternoon is coming
Today I sing your song again To those people,
Who never heard your story
12
Who think that you’re nothing more than a beauty
Today I send that prayer again For those people,
Whose soul turns into your body
Whose hope turns into your feathers Whose voice turns into your heart
Today I sing your song in the rain
So the tragedy, won’t happen again The Crane Song acrylic on canvas, 100 x 150 cm, 2011

Who sleeps in
the nest of a bat
In the day he yells about right and wrong
But In the night he finds his pillow is cold and no one’s around.

But thank God
what made us cry
