Gamania View
Your dream is what keeps Gamania burning bright Why do people dream? Since Gamania opened its door, many reporters and in the industry have asked, "Why?" Why open a game company? Why build such a large server center? Why set up a foundation? Why…. Why….? In reality, when people put questions marks on our company, it's not because they doubt us. Instead, it's because we have turned all these question marks in exclamation marks. Setting up own server center independent of the telecommunications companies; producing our own TV programs; expanding into the publishing industry; spending six years to produce animations; creating the Gam-ma Island Café; investing in a 24-hour customer service center… even as the outside world exclaim: "Wow! Why are you doing that?" – Gamania continues to move forward, leaving those exclamation marks far behind. Are we really the author for so many legends? The truth is, Gamania is all about dreams and taking the chance. Gaming is itself an endeavor filled with dreams and romance. Our job is nothing more than making fantasy into reality. We prove that it's not just empty words. Everything that Gamania has ever done were all inspired by dreams. Through experimentation and realization, we worked hard to build this piece of heaven. Well, what about your dreams? Have you started making it come true? "Mankind's greatness is in our capacity to dream". Be it asking for the hand of Gamania's most beautiful girl in marriage, having a Gamania baby or meeting 100 Gamanian friends – if you dare to dream, it's never too late to act!

Flight! What are dreams? Dreams might be related to brain capacity and needs. It's a thought that exists within the brain. When the capacity for realization is available, dreams come true. When that capacity is insufficient, other people will pick up where the dream left off. If the capacity is completely lacking, it's then no more than stray thoughts in the head.
In Between "Complete" and "Incomplete" It is dreams that created the conveniences in life we enjoy today. Though people have always dreamed since ancient times, the difference between "complete" and "incomplete" can be a very wide gulf. Are you moving forward to your dream? Or are you daydreaming in the shade of a tree? A group of Gamanians are now hard at work to realize their dreams. For "Dreams Wanted ", we received an overwhelming response from Gamanians around the world. Be they complete or incomplete, their entries will make you think. Come now and experience it for yourself!

The Gamania’s Dream – Albert Says If gaming is my profession, that would be so cool! Albert dreamed of making "gaming" his profession so he decided at the outset to set up his own business. "Games were very much non-mainstream at the time but I loved games and dreamed of making it my profession. This was why I started my own business." Once the business was up and running however, Albert found that reality was very different from his dream of programming for a living. As Gamania grew and prospered however, it seems that he has realized his dream of making gaming his profession after all. It also allowed other people to make "gaming" their profession too! You might think that Albert's dream is all about his work. Actually, he's thinking about sailing around the world, though this is still just a tentative idea!

Never give up – Don't let the dream become a joke On the way to realizing a dream, a "naysayer" often appears, whispering discouraging words and trying to trick you into giving up. Gamania went through its own share of bad times as well. The failed overseas expansion in 2002 led to a lot of dirty looks for Gamania from the rest of the industry. "In 2002 our company suffered major setback and was forced to let go 80% of the employees from our Japanese subsidiary. At the time, the alarms were ringing. We had to admit that we had failed. What next? Do we quit the Japanese market or try save the company by shedding staff? Our goal then was the Asia-Pacific market so there was no way we could give up on the Japanese market. The only path open to us was to save the company. When I received the retrenchment list from the managers at noon that day, I immediately convened a meeting of all company employees. I then announced that we have suffered a mar setback overseas and are under heavy pressure in the Taiwanese market as well. The conditions have changed so drastically that I had made the decision to cut 80% of all employees from the Japanese subsidiary. At the same time, I expressed how pained and regretful I felt at having to make such a decision. That night, a colleague called me and told me that other employees were very disappointed with me. They felt that I had let them down. I treasure my friendships and this came as a great blow to me. There was nothing I could say. I almost felt saying: ’Forget it! I'll just give up! Never again~’. What about the remaining 20% then? Will I give up on them too? What about my grand ambition of breaking into the Japanese market? Won't that become a hollow joke? No! No matter how tough thins become, I had to prove that my decision was right. I wanted to show those leaving the company that they didn't choose the wrong
07
Features employer either!" After those tumultuous times, the Japanese subsidiary has delivered some results in the past two years, proving that my decision to carry on was correct! According to Albert, it's natural for people to feel some bad some times. For him though, it was a cathartic experience. However, if you ever start thinking about "just giving up", remind yourself: Why did you decide to do this in the firsts place? How did you end up on this path? After all that hard work, wouldn't it be a waste giving it all up? Perseverance is very important for realizing your dreams. As long as you recharge yourself and get your heart back in order, everything is still possible.
Albert's Dream for the Team Gamania must of course continue to move towards its overall target but Albert has his own dreams for the various teams! Administration – Hope for more improvements in efficiency and use digitization to boost administrative flow. Marketing – Be more creative and tolerant. Learn and share regional operating requirements so we can have stronger market presence. R&D – Accelerate the pace of development in terms of technology and creativity. Service – Never be satisfied, continue to think about how to meet customer requirements and use electronic security to assist customers.

Become the Largest Game Company in the Asia-Pacific What is Gamania's dream for the future then? Albert immediately said: "Become the largest game company in the Asia-Pacific!" This dream has remained unchanged since 2002. "We must strengthen our internal game development capability and make world-class products; we also need to reinforce our business operations in Taiwan and overseas as well as encourage all the regional teams to exchange information and know-how. There will of course be obstacles long the way but if everyone at Gamania can challenge themselves, this goal is not at all hard to reach." Said Albert, his eyes burning with the same old fire.
Gamania Cheerup Foundation The "Gamania Cheerup Foundation" was officially established this year to bring happiness to more people through charity work. Though Gamania is not a megaenterprise, we've accumulated our fair share of influence after thirteen years in business. "Most of our customers are young people who are the cornerstones of society. The close relationship they have with us will allow us to help them lead healthier and more energetic lives. I don't want the outside world to think of the gaming industry as being all about online games. There should be something more." At Gamania, we are always doing what we feel is right. We always want to be first and are always looking to create our own value!

Special Serious and practical in nature, Lo Hung-Chih's heart is set on every game developer's ultimate dream – creating the perfect game development environment. With this his long-term goal, Lo is now advancing relentlessly towards this dream.
Lo Hung-Chih Dream's Relentless Pilgrim When you ask someone "What is your dream?", most people need time to come up with an answer. When Lo was asked this question, he already had the answer. While he emphasized that "I came from a poor family so I am more practical", his blueprint for the future however was stunning in its simplicity, but so difficult in its execution.
Impact = Opportunity? Lo had originally joined the game industry because he loved drawing. After experiencing the ups and downs in the overall environment, he was saddened but how everyone seemed to be at the mercy of external factors. This eventually gave him the idea of creating an environment where he could work together with other skilled people who also loved games to create trend-setting games. Lo smiled and said: "It'll be spectacular if I can meet likeminded comrades." This dream has been something that Lo has been turning over in his mind or some time. When asked if he was working on making it come true, he answered: "Yes, I haven't wandered off the path. I'm not yet truly ready though." The journey to realize his dreams, however, was not all smooth sailing from the time he quit his job, set up a studio to eventually opening a production company. In transitioning from a studio to a company, he once lost a programmer whose coding skills was offset by his poor social skills. Losing this critical employee almost meant the loss of financing but he was fortunate in retaining the support of Gamania CEO Albert. Though recruiting a replacement wasted development time and impacted on the company's development, he now feels that this was one of those rare learning experiences.

The Eternal Flame of Passion For Lo, creating the ideal working environment meant spending more time and effort. From considering only the technical aspects in the beginning, he eventually realized that the "people" and "emotional" factors were the real challenges. He therefore made adjustments until he came up with workable improvements, including the training of colleagues in communication skills and learning how to be objective about issues in order to minimize the psychological impact. Lo said: "Confidence is what you need to get things started but too much of it becomes arrogance. This is bad for communications and gets in the way of work. This is probably the biggest obstacle to realizing one's dream." When asked what really keeps him going, Lo felt that it was his undying passion for games. He also hoped that his passion for games will continue to burn brightly as he looks for practical ways of meeting the needs of the business while moving closer to his goal of creating a paradise for game developers.

What is your current dream? To become a designer for animal models. I love buying animal snack toys (small toy models) and after spending tens of thousands of dollar on them, began thinking about creating animal snack toys of my own. People who create models are known as model designers. They create snack toys out of the thin air and give them life. I want to become someone like them who can create products that are sold around the world. I also want to awaken people's love for wild animals and support for environmental conservation through models of animal life. How you plan to realize the dream? I will do all I can to make it come true! I am now about 20% along in realizing my dream. In the beginning I planned to use some simple materials to create animal models. In the short-term, I intend to create more interesting and exquisite models as well as attract the attention of the animal modeling world. In the medium term, I want my work to go into mass production and complete at least one set as a masterpiece. An example of this would be Taiwan's protected animal species. In the long term, I hope I will have the opportunity to prove my skills in making animal models. I hope the making and selling of animal models will help to promote the protection of Taiwanese wild life and environment.

His colleagues say, "He lives in his dreams!" What next for a boy who has continued to following his dream and never lost sight of his original vision?
Alan Kuo Creating Happy Dreamers In his sophomore year, his interest in games drew him into game development. A contact at a magazine led to a job at Softstar where he stayed for the next 14 years. During this time, he prayed for the environment to change, to set up efficient processes as well as balance the needs of the business and product. At the age of XX, he decided it was time for a change. He joined Gamania – a company where anything is possible.
Conquering the World Through Games It's almost as if anything he wanted to do just happened. According to Kuo, he was living proof of the principle "you can do it if you put your mind to it" espoused in Secret and Law of Attraction. Though he might say this with a laugh, he knew what it was like to work through the night by himself, compromise in the face of reality and to suffer setbacks from a change of tracks. Kuo has always been involved with game development, a job that covers planning, programming, art and music. For Kuo, his first mission is to define the rules and get things organized so the game can begin taking shape. Apart from professional ability and coordination, it was also important to keep the morale of the team up. It is thanks to the passion for games that burns inside Kuo that he has come through it all. It is Kuo's belief that the purpose of games is to bring happiness to the player. The people making games must therefore be happy as well. After spending most of his life in the game industry as an artist, producer and project manager, all he has ever wanted to do is make games that people enjoy and are touched by. When pressed to define what his dream was, Kuo said with a mischievous smile: "I want to use games to take over the world!" - 16

One World? Isn't that even possible? When the questions about dreams were placed to Kuo, his reaction was, "Dreams? One World? Is that even possible?" Though this was what he said, it was obvious that his real ambition is to bring people happiness through games and one day, realize the vision of "One World". Kuo has not always been a vegetarian, though his parents were. On his first day of military service however, when the new recruits were asked: "Who here is vegetarian?", he accidentally raised his hand. He has now been a vegetarian for more than a decade. Even his wife and kids are now vegetarians too. Kuo laughed and said that he felt that it was good for health and would make cooking easier for his mother. Later he realized that he was in fact a pioneer in "reducing carbon emissions through vegetarianism"! Be it his insistence on no blood or violence, or his mission to bring warmth to the world, Kuo's words all hint at how much he values social responsibility. "Everyone should eat more vegetables!" were his parting words. Does this count as a dream as well? You can do it if you put your mind to it, and perhaps more dreams about social responsibility will help to create more wonderful things and realize the goal of "One World"!
Alan Kuo's Path of Dreams Graduation from Taipei National University of the Arts Softstar R&D Positions: Artist, Art Director, Game Producer, Assistant Project Manager, Project Manager During this time he was involved in the development of 16 single-player games. His most famous work was the "Xuan Yuan Sword" series. Director of R&D, Gamania Group

What is your current dream? My dream is not particularly grand. I just want my family to be happy and healthy. How you plan to realize the dream? The most important thing is stability, then start slowly saving up money for traveling. I don't really have any plans because putting all kinds of restrictions on yourself to achieve a goal just doesn't sound like a dream at all. Dreams should be about fantasy, freedom and happiness. If it ends up being so troublesome, it is no longer a dream.

Special As a child, he believed that he would grow up to be a happy adult, approach everything with enthusiasm and only work for those things that he believe in – or he would not perform well. Now, Vincent Huang ("Big V") is doing the things he wants to do though he might not be that happy about it.
Vincent Huang A Dream Maker Filled with Paradox and Resolve For someone of his age, he has experienced many things that other people haven't even dreamed of – ran a company before the age of 30, burned through seventy to eighty million in capital then declared a failure… he had once been at the top of his game and filled with ambition. After hitting the iceberg, what has changed? What has remained unchanged?
Dream? Questions, Questions! Talking with Big V takes effort and will. His habit of skipping from topic to topic is really demanding on the listener but when you think about it, the points that he is making are actually all relevant to the topic. The conflicting responses as well as the air of uncertainty mixed in with firm resolve however just feel… bizarre. "Can you tell us what your dream is…?" "My current dream and what I want to do now is to win the recognition of the people in the industry." "How do you plan on realizing this dream?" "No idea. If I knew, would I be here?" Though he claims that he does not know how he will realize his dream, Big V emphasized that we can all make choices. The things that we did in the past will decide our developments in the future – there are no two ways about it, hard work is the only way? He smiled and said: "If you ask successful people, their story is always bound to involve them working hard then waking up one day to find that they are already there." For Big V, making a come true involves a great deal of effort, thought and time. It's not just about doing one or two things right. Instead, it is built up in different stages through constant effort all the while enduring setbacks that would break an ordinary person. Only then will there be success.
Big V's Journey
- 20
Special
Nothing is Impossible The way he puts it seems very vague, but Big V is the perfect embodiment of that approach. On one occasion, when only the server was OK, he single-handedly organized all of the details for distribution, press conference and CD labeling in just three weeks. Not only did he spend 4 days living out of the artist's house but also personally delivered all of the invitations to the media on the bicycle. When he finally completed the launch and promotions for the new product, the sense of achievement he felt from accomplishing this mission made him believe that nothing is impossible in this world. This is why he hates hearing the words "it's impossible" from his coworkers. To him, anything including alternative options or another way of doing things, is better than the words "impossible". For all of his self-confidence, Big V believes that he should "never be satisfied with himself". To him, there is no greater enemy than himself because pride and arrogance will hold one back. To realize his dream at work, the "team" is therefore the most important thing. Everything including success or failure depends on the team. He therefore wants to learn how to think about things from the team's perspective instead and build up rapport with team members so they can accomplish greater things together and individually.

My big feet. For a while I liked wearing embroidered shoes though other students joked that a female ghost was coming. Fortunately, Chinese chic is popular overseas so they do make embroidered shoes in large sizes. These are sold by shops in tourist districts throughout Taiwan and most importantly, they are usually priced quite cheap.

With "travel overseas and see the world" now the dream of today's generation, apart from studying overseas and work exchange programs, what other options are available? Perhaps the experiences of Sam Lai who was stationed on the Thai-Myanmar border for six years might provide you with the inspiration for realizing your dreams.
Simple Dreams, Unlimited Po
Sam Lai – 2000 Days in the Thai-Myanmar B When you hear the words "Refugee Camp", what images flash through your mind? As the convoy continued along the road, the Umphium Mai refugee camp on the border between Thailand and Myanmar gradually came into view. From a distance, it looked like a "village deep in the mountains" with huts sprawled haphazardly across the hillside. "The life of a refugee is hard to imagine. They have no freedom and are completely dependent on other people's aid for survival." said Lai. Though he spent six years working with refugees on the Thai-Myanmar border, the shock from his first visit to the camp still remains indelibly imprinted on his psyche.
One Mekong River, Two Worlds The town of Mae Sot on the border between Thai and Myanmar is an important stop on the freight route between the two countries. The Mekong River, less than five kilometers away, defines the border so you can very easily walk across the river and arrive in Myanmar. Completely different worlds, however, exist on opposite sides of the river. In the past, the oppression of the junta in Myanmar saw many people seek refuge in Thailand. These people either ended up in refugee camps on the border or hide out in the Thai wilderness where they lead a life filled with uncertainty. Now in his thirties, Taiwan-born Sam Lai often stood on Mekong riverbank and looked at the Myanmar border on the far side. There he wondered why the fates of two peoples separated by less than twenty meters were so different. - 32

Border Lands Taking Action – 2000 Days on the Border The mission of Lai and his colleagues at the Taipei Overseas Peace Service (TOPS) is to provide in-service training and development for teachers in the refugee camp outside of the kindergarten's class hours. Lai had joined TOPS right after receiving his master's degree in England and has now been working in the field for over 2000 days. During these 2000 or so days on the Thai-Myanmar border, Lai hoped that their efforts in the field and the support of local community and international organizations will help to build up trust and friendships with the international society. At the same time, it also gave him the chance to accumulate practical experience in humanitarian work. When Lai was a child, he did not care much for studying. Due to his love for the wilderness, he once thought that he would graduate and find a job in the mountains somewhere, perhaps as a country teacher or a national park ranger. In the end, he ended up in the woods on the Thai-Myanmar border as teacher for ethnic minorities and refugee camps. "I just like the feel of the wilderness. It's a mix between nature and mankind." For Lai, this was fate. He might not have expected it, but perhaps this was what he was born to do.

Simple Motives Build Resolve Simple motives build resolve. Lai knows very clearly that he stays on the Thai-Myanmar border because he and the people himself both need to find their own way of life in a foreign land. "My dream is that one day the children and youths on the border can return to their homeland. There they will have the same opportunities as me to pursue their dreams." Lai hopes each field trip will help build his local friends and the local organization to build up the capability to create their own future. To help the local people realize their dreams, in 2005 he and his local comrades set up the "Tak Border Child Assistance Foundation" to help poor families in isolated mountain areas with their schooling, accommodation and living costs. Apart from giving them the chance to receive higher education, they also hoped that the graduates would return one day to help their communities in their own ways.

Dreaming of Changing this Imperfect World People often ask him: "Why go so far away to help people? Why not start by helping the people in Taiwan?" Lai's answer is that the children on the Thai-Myanmar border are living a life of uncertainty, poverty and insecurity. "Helping other people now means that one day they may help Taiwan too. They, like us, live in an uncertain world." Lai's dream is to make the world a better place. He also believes that their efforts represent how Taiwan can help other countries and participate in international affairs.
Better Self Understanding through because of Overseas Service Though overseas service is long road filled with setbacks, Lai has continued on one step at a time, supported by his dream and his fellow aid workers. "I simply want to do things that are good for myself and good for other people. Even more importantly, I want to learn more about myself by looking at this world." said Lai enthusiastically. Lai's dream is simple. As he mentioned in his book "2000 Days on the Thai-Myanmar Border ", going overseas is not only about breaking free of the limitations that you set on yourself and choosing to follow your own path. Even more importantly, it represents the action and support for the people and land that you come into contact with.

Exhibition Gui There's a Naysayer in Us All
During the three days from June 25~27, when you walk into the Gamania offices and toilets, You will find a Naysayer dressed in red tights. What is this Naysayer?
On the path to realizing one's dream, everyone surely had the thought "Give up? Or keep going?" pop into their heads. It's like an argument between an angel and a demon. This time "Dreams" are the theme for SPACE 17. In creating the character of the Naysayer, the message we want to give you is: "There is a little demon in us all". Realizing a dream not only needs imagination and execution but also steely resolve. By using the Naysayer to nudge you into "giving up", SPACE 17 reminds everyone that they must "never give up". For SPACE 17's July exhibition, we invite you to come join with us in defeating the Naysayer and reawakening once again the resolve to realize one's dreams.
