I must admit my intense passion for olive oil. This wonderful, natural product that the mastery of generations has given us is able to enrich a simple ingredient as well as transform a more complex dish. For these reasons I am particularly fond of the Guide that has been the first innovation of my management. Gambero Rosso’s and my own work does not end here, however. We are in fact helped by the brilliant Stefano Polacchi, authority on the subject, and by all the other editors we have chosen to rise to the challenge of making the map of olive oils. Who else could do it? I’m afraid it’s only who, like us, were the first publishing group to realize a guide translated into English that stands for the credibility of numerous guides of Italian quality products and catering. In this guide of the best olive oils of Italy (in which we review hundreds of excellent labels and describe the best olive oil producers) there are the biggest brands of high quality artisanal olive oils. Only a few of these labels are needed to really make the difference in a restaurant or in a trattoria. There are professional caterers who do so, who have long offered their guests a sampling of extra virgin olive oils to taste in various ways: on salads, on potatoes or even simply on bread (not necessarily toasted and without salt). When you enter a French restaurant or bistro, don’t you expect the saucer of butter (often scrumptious!) with the special little knife for cutting and spreading it on a piece of good bread? And why should there not be something similar in Italy with our most excellent olive oils, which can benefit also from the fact that they come from only a few miles away from the restaurant? The investment in terms of budget would be nearly insignificant, with a very high return in terms of culture and the caterer’s image--and certainly in terms of satisfied customers. This reason is valid not only for Italy: indeed it is even more so for our restaurants abroad who should (and many already do) fly high the flag of extra virgin Italian olive oil--an identifier, a symbol as strong as wine and pasta. It only takes one taste of these great olive oils for them to leave an unforgettable impression. So too can the Italy of biodiversity and quality win in the world.

The olive oil campaign of 2016/17, in Italy as in the rest of the world, did not shine in terms of quantity and in some cases neither in terms of quality. Despite this, almost 400 olive oil companies were selected among the best of Italy to celebrate the excellence of this product, its territories, the marriage of environment and designations of origin—the latter an element of novelty of our areas of production. With the offer of 42 PDO, Italy, which holds European leadership in number of recognitions, may now present itself to international markets with new indications of origin. The PGI of Sicily and Calabria have recently been added to the escutcheon of Tuscan PGI, with the expected addition by the EU of the regions of Puglia, Marche, Campania, and Lazio. The objective is indeed to segment the market, but with the desire to push the designations of origin sector ever further, directing consumers toward extra virgin olive oils that bring together regions and the high quality their production certifies. This is also the mission of the 2017 edition of the Olive Oils of Italy Guide. A concentrate of unique tasting profiles that go beyond the conventional extra virgin, PDO, PGI and organic, but all remain strictly 100% Italian. The most striking feature of this editorial effort, realized in collaboration with Unaprol, is that despite a less than thrilling olive oil campaign, the tasting panels were able to discern the real Ferraris of extra virgin olive oil. This guide will travel and reach new markets and new consumers. Around this guide there is a true team sport driven to the success of the businesses and their products. It is a beautiful picture of our country: the image of the best Italy that proves itself and wins.

Made with different varieties of olives, each of them with its own unique organoleptic and sensory properties, it is an essential part of the Italian diet. The Italian Trade Commission (ICE) is pleased to partner in the publication of this important educational tool aimed at engaging and educating trade and consumer audiences on Olive Oil’s history, production methods, and its regional differences and uses. In order to increase the awareness and encourage the appreciation of Italy’s gastronomy, the Italian Trade Commission - under the auspices of the Ministry of Economic Development - is committed to promote its speciality products through a massive promotional campaign worldwide. It is aimed at celebrating Italy’s unparalleled ability to transform simple ingredients into extraordinary products. This Italian Olive Oil guide is certainly a testament to this concept.

As it was for Saul of Tarsus, the road to conversion can have its ups and downs. The important thing is to always get back up and persevere. The same things happens on the road to quality, most of all for extra virgin olive oil. It is what the labels, stories, and sacrifices of the 20 Special Premiums of 2017 show us. Each of these Made-in-Italy champions tells the story of pursuing extreme quality in different situations in such a diverse country. In particular, I would like to talk about the ex aequo premiums. The two prized organic olive oils are Umbrian: indeed Umbria is the region where an almost maniacal care is taken to not use chemicals in the fields and olive oil mills, in a season in many ways similar to the one two years ago--lessons learned have created a wealth of knowledge and awareness of which these two winning companies are the highest expression. The olive cultivators of the year are two Tuscan olive oil mills that, each in their own way, start from the olives before the press, and this has made the difference in a region that this year has certainly pulled its weight. The two best monocultivar are companies that have achieved maximum expressiveness and finest balance by taking varieties that usually produce less elegant olive oils, and working them in extreme conditions that make a product which is the epitome of refinement and balance. Idem for the best blends: an obsessive work in the fields, focused on the idea of making an oil starting all the way from the olive grove. The same for the best PDO and PGI: the first are represented by two olive oils that express the vivacity of very different territories, but neither are describable with greeting card stereotypes--even the PGI, held by some to be the offspring of a lesser god, give the most character from regions like Tuscany and Sicily, the only ones (for the moment) along with Calabria which can use European certification. And again the best quality to price ratio: sartorial, millimetric olive oils at a price that is indeed “correct� but not outrageous!
