GAMBERO ROSSO IS 30 and celebrates Tre Bicchieri Week The wait for Tre Bicchieri Week is almost over. The Tre Bicchieri World Tour will move to North America for three events that have become authentic celebrations of Italian quality. On February 4, the tour will visit Chicago, February 9 will be New York City’s turn, and and on February 11, Italian top wines will wind up in San Francisco. To celebrate our 30th year, at every event, besides the classic table tastings from 2 to 6 p.m., we will hold a Master Class, conducted by the curators, which will focus on the new edition of the guide and Special Awards, the best wines of each type. It was 1986 when Gambero Rosso took its first steps as a weekly supplement in the daily newspaper Il Manifesto. The year after, the first Gambero Rosso guide was printed. In 1999, we founded the first thematic television channel in Europe, followed by the Città del Gusto, the schools, the master program, and recently, the public stock offering in November 2015. In the meantime, fascination with Italy and its authentic products swept the world, with wine events around the globe the natural consequence. Tre Bicchieri Week includes the most anxiously awaited Italian
wine events in the States, and an impressive number of top trade professionals take part, relationships that have been consolidated during more than 20 years of annual meetings. The first event in the United States was in 1993, and today, more than ever, our yearly wine tasting moves the marketplace, starts the buzz, upends orders and established rankings. In terms of value, the American wine market is Italy’s most important, amounting to 21.7%, that is, 1.1 billion euros out of a total of 5.1 billion. Germany comes next. In the January-June 2015 period, Italy held its place in the United States firmly, in terms of both volume and value. The most notable change was in Italian spumante: imports increased 35% in quantity and 15% in value (to $116 million).
2
The starting point for the events is the enormous work behind the Guida Vini d’Italia: forty-five thousand wines are tasted for every edition and twenty thousand are reviewed. Vini d’Italia 2016 bestows over 400 Tre Bicchieri awards, 421 to be exact. The latest edition saw a few classic terroirs come to the fore, such as Montalcino, with great 2010 vintages, or Chianti Classico with its excellent Gran Selezione wines. Barolo is still King of the Langhe with over 30 wines earning an award. The northeast of the country submitted some fine 2014 whites, Veneto reds are in great form, Marche and Campania whites are rising in quality, while general improvement among southern wines and the ever more dynamic Lambrusco means there is always plenty to write about, from both large- and small-scale denominations.

VINI D'ITALIA 2016
421 Tre Bicchieri
Here they are, all the Tre Bicchieri winners in Vini d’Italia 2016, all the wines that attained our top rating and recognition in the 29th edition of the guide. Out of 421 labels, 111 cost less than 10 euros at the winery. Eighty are produced by wineries that are certified as organic or biodynamic. Our team of 60 tasters were the same as always, led by three editor-curators, Gianni Fabrizio, Eleonora Guerini and Marco Sabellico. In the list that follows, we mark with the symbol NEW the wineries that won Tre Bicchieri for the first time – there are 40 in all, and they are a testimony to the liveliness of the sector.
“Wine, especially in Italy, is the poetry of the earth.” Mario Soldati VALLE D'AOSTA Valle d'Aosta Chambave Moscato Passito Prieuré ’13 | La Crotta di Vegneron Opens on floral fragrances, nuances of thyme, and finally dried fruit. On the palate, concentration of fruit, sweetness, but above all, freshness and elegance. Valeria Piccini is a great chef, and her Caino has been one of Italy’s most fascinating restaurant destinations since the 1990s. Her work is constantly evolving, technically and creatively. Choose asparagus gelato with pancetta and egg emulsion as an appetizer, or roast baccalà with pancetta and seasonal greens, accompanied by a remarkable green tomato whip. A raviolo filled with extraordinary house-produced extra-virgin olive oil and tomato coulis was a pleasure. Excellent pici with roast tomatoes, bottarga (dried fish roe) and anchovies were served on a green pea cream. Squab with onion ‘ashes’ and ‘tones of red’ (raspberries, red carrots, beets and foie gras) had great chromatic impact. Despite its apparent simplicity, bread pudding with blueberries, ricotta, meringue and blackberry compote with fruit gelato was a symphony of consistencies, temperatures and flavors. The wine cellar is monumental and the service professional.
You’ll find the best of the region and its mountains embodied in this splendid restaurant. Valerio Centofanti’s roots are deeply planted in the Abruzzo, but influenced by modern techniques and some gentle updating. Ingredients such as mushrooms, wild mountain spinach, truffles, wild herbs and local meat reflect the passing seasons. Lanfranco Centofanti, Valerio and Valentina’s father, is a skilled sommelier and host

as well as king of the grill and fireplace. A simple scamorza cheese, crisp outside, golden and melting inside, conveys the sense of the life and work of an entire family, as does a poached egg with sheep’s milk ricotta and wild asparagus, or freshly made pasta such as pappardelle with lamb and pecorino from the Alta Valle del Turano or, in season, the wonderful tagliolini with truffles. With natural elegance, spontaneity and precision, Valentina, born and raised here, can help guests with the monumental wine list of a cellar that offers both depth of vintages and delightful surprises.

Impeccable service, extraordinary hospitality, territory-based cucina masterfully updated, an incredible wine cellar, undoubtedly the most complete in the region with practically non-existent mark-ups on its bottles. Ivan and Sandro Uanetto skillfully manage a restaurant in which the menu frequently changes, according to the seasons. It’s best to take Ivan’s suggestions, but if you prefer to order from the menu, begin with the splendid beef tartare from Pezzata Rossa friulana cows, served with black Muzzana truffles, or the fillet of smoked pork with herbs from the Carnia and cucumber sauce. The house specialty is "polente cuinciade", polenta sauced with seasonal products. Potato gnocchi with goose ragout or eggplant ‘chocolates’ with bell pepper sauce come next. A vast choice of main courses ranges from delicious ribs to lamb saddle with coriander and wild boar with Refosco wine sauce. Desserts are exquisite. Close with bittersweet chocolate shavings accompanied by an excellent rum. A noteworthy selection of extra-virgin oils, Ivan’s latest obsession.
In the 1970s, Giorgio Pinchiorri was not yet Giorgio Pinchiorri. He was a boy passionate about wine, curious, bright, and hungry for knowledge, like many others. He soon began working at Enoteca Nazionale, which he later bought and transformed into his own Enoteca (wine shop/bar), together with his life-long companion, Annie Foelde. The rest is history. Together they built up one of the largest wine cellars in the world, a legend among great Italian restaurants, and an example of entrepreneurial foresight. The thousands of bottles on the wine list correspond to tens of thousands in the cellar itself, an astounding investment. Chefs Italo Bassi and Riccardo Monco carry on the work that Annie, who is in now in overall charge of the house, began. Some examples: scallops with chickpea puree, lardons and fried sage are a wonderful opener. Potato and pesto agnolotti with calamaretti in white wine are sublimely simple. Everything is framed by meticulous service, a ballet of wine glasses, an enchanting visit to the cellar, and the charismatic, empathetic affability of Giorgio, a wonderful person, above all.

La Stua de Michil dell'Hotel La Perla Corvara in Badia/Corvara (Bolzano)
www.hotel-laperla.it/it/ristori/lastüa-de-michil/142-9792.html
The fame of this splendid Alpine hotel, run by the Costa family, of which Michil is the current head, is tied to its incredible wine cellar and restaurant, La Stua. Perhaps it’s the mountain setting, perhaps the subtle, understated but enveloping hospitality, but the restaurant and cellar are unique, different from any others you may have visited. The kitchen is in the hands of a young talented chef, Nicola Laera, whose mission is to serve food worthy of the environment, holding its own within a Ladin culture and in an international setting. The focus is on small and very small producers, sustainability, harmonious pairings, balanced experimentation. Some examples: deconstructed ossobuco Milanese; ravioli with veal organ meats, octopus, bell pepper and estragon olive oil; mountain venison cutlet in pine nut crust, served with celery root puree, chanterelles and black walnuts.

Bagno di Romagna (ForlĂŹ-Cesena) www.paoloteverini.it
For fifty years, the Teverini name has meant passion for their work, constant family management, the impulse to offer new things without ever resting on one’s laurels. Examples: freshwater shrimp tartare, shiso and turnip leaves marinated in delicate raspberry vinegar: mountain venison carpaccio paired with wild mushrooms and tomato-orange mayonnaise. Reduced broth accompanies cappelletti alla moda di Artusi. Roast Apennine lamb is paired with umami broth. A rich selection of desserts includes variations on mango or meringue cooked in milk and served with various fruit flavors. The wine list is remarkable, interesting and varied, with attention paid to lesser-known territories and products. Service is affectionate and informal.

WHITE WINE 2016: FALANGHINA DEL SANNIO miami
S AVSEAVE T HETHE D ATE DATE
Falanghina from the Sannio zone was one of the great revelations of our tastings for the Gambero Rosso Vini d’Italia guide. A denomination that is developing enormously in qualitative terms, its presence on Italian and international markets is growing. Another pleasant surprise is that great wines are coming from the Sannio at truly affordable prices. To find out more, don’t miss the WHITE WINE 2016: FALANGHINA DEL SANNIO event that Gambero Rosso will hold in the wonderful setting of the terrace of Cibo South Beach in Miami, on February 2. One of the most marvelous features of falanghina is its wonderful ability to pair well with a wide variety of foods. It is a versatile wine, aromatically intense
and fragrant, ideal for pairing with oysters, shellfish or fish carpaccio, with pasta or seafood. Falanghina, one of the favorite wines of Julius Caesar and the Roman emperors, is extraordinarily well-suited to drink with the world cuisine found at its best in Miami. It’s fantastic with sushi, with enchiladas and tacos, or with spaghetti and clams. It is majestic with arroz y pollo or Thai curry. It’s difficult to find an dish that doesn’t go well with this wine. We are looking forward to seeing you on February 2 in Miami and sharing with you the wonderful world of Falanghina del Sannio. More than 20 producers will be on hand to offer food and wine lovers their best versions of this up-trending wine of the year. Presented by
