Happy New Year!
It won’t be long and we will once again be singing Auld Lang Syne at midnight. The meaning of the phrase “Auld Lang Syne” is unfamiliar to us English-speaking Americans because it’s actually an 18th century Scots term. The literal translation is “old long since” but its meaning is more like “old times” or “olden days”. As I get older, I sometimes wish things were like the old days when life was simple and carefree. On the other hand, I do recall that in the late 70’s our nation suffered an oil crisis which led to long lines at gas stations everywhere, and many simply ran out. The oil crisis was a contributor to high inflation and high interest rates. In 1982, Rockford had the dubious distinction of having the highest unemployment rate in the country at 24%. When I started in real estate in 1985, interest rates were around 15%.

Research from Freddie Mac shows 28% of all households (36.1 million) are sole-person, and that number is growing. Over the past 40 years, the number of sole-person households has nearly doubled, and that’s a trend that’s expected to continue. According to Freddie Mac: “Our calculation suggests that there will be an additional 5 million sole-person households in the United States by the next decade. This means 42% of the household growth will be contributed by sole-person households, . . .” If you fall into this category, here are three tips to help you achieve your homeownership goals. 1. Know Your Credit Score When you buy a home on your own, you have to qualify for your loan based solely on your own finances and credit history. Investopedia says: “. . . lenders will be looking at just one credit profile: yours. Needless to say, it has to be in great shape. It is always a good idea to review your credit report beforehand, and this is especially true of solo buyers.” It’s important to find out your score so you know where it falls. If you’re not sure if it’s strong enough or where to focus your energy to improve it, meet with a professional for expert advice on your individual situation.
In this step, lean on the pros to determine what you’re eligible for and what’s right for you. 3. Think About Your Future Home and Your Needs You should also spend time thinking about what you want. What type of home do you picture yourself in? To answer that question, Quicken Loans shares this advice: “Think about your lifestyle, what you want out of your home and your needs. Is being close to work important? Do you need a lot of yard space? Do you want an extra bedroom that you can transform into a home office? Condo or detached home? Lots of space for entertaining? It’s all up to you (and your budget).” Again, a professional can help you balance what you want and how much you should spend on your monthly housing costs to determine what type of home is right for you. While buying a home solo can feel like a big challenge, it doesn’t have to be. SLOW-COOKER RUSTIC FRENCH ONION SOUP PRESENTED BY KATHY HEEREN-ELLIS Whether this is your main dish on a cold winter night or served as a course during your meal, this classic French onion soup is a dish that is easy to make and impressive to your guests with the heartiness and visual appeal of the crusty bread topped with cheese. They don’t have to know how easy it was – just that it’s delicious!
INGREDIENTS 12 cups thinly sliced onions (6 large) 1/4 cup butter, melted 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme leaves 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour 3/4 cup dry sherry 1/4 cup water 4 cups beef-flavored broth 20 slices (1/2 inch thick) baguette (about 10 oz) 6oz Gruyère cheese, shredded (1 1/2 cups) Fresh thyme leaves, if desired
DIRECTIONS Spray 6- to 7-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. In slow cooker, place onions, butter, salt, pepper, and dried thyme. In medium bowl, mix flour, sherry, and water with wire whisk until blended. Stir into onion mixture. Cover; cook on Low heat setting 9 to 10 hours or until onions are softened and deep brown. Stir broth into slow cooker. Increase heat setting to High. Cover; cook 10 minutes or until hot. Meanwhile, set oven control to broil. Line cookie sheet with foil. Arrange baguette slices in single layer on cookie sheet. Broil with tops 3 inches from heat 2 minutes, turning once, until lightly browned.
