WELCOME TO GAMBIT’S 2023 BEST OF NEW ORLEANS issue, in which we present the results of our annual readers poll!

Once again, thousands of New Orleanians responded to the call of duty — namely, to determine who will reign supreme as New Orleans’ best. From framing stores to music venues, po-boy shops to salsa makers, the Best of New Orleans is a reflection (for better or worse) of what you, our readers, have been feeling this year.

This year’s poll included all your favorite categories, of course, but we also decided to ask readers for their best recommendations for visitors to New Orleans. It’s a handy list you can give to your mom, your auntie who parties a little too hard, that guy you haven’t seen since college who randomly DM’d you about his bachelor party trip to “Nawlins” … even to people you don’t really like!

We also have once again included a list of staff picks as well as a new Best of New Orleans: The Outtakes section to highlight some of your more, shall we say, creative answers.

Sincerely, we couldn’t do this without you. This year more than 100,000 votes were cast. We thank all of you for taking time to fill out the poll.

Unlike those other lists you’ll see, we don’t favor advertisers. We don’t sell spots on the list or otherwise engage in any sort of funny business. Here’s a FAQ to better explain the process.

Q. Who chooses the winners?

A. This is literally all your fault. Our staff has nothing to do with the poll aside from putting together the list of categories, tabulating the results and fact-checking addresses, names and the like.

Q. Wait a second, there’s also a staff picks section! Ahh-haha, I knew you were lying!

A. Cool your jets, Mr. Pillow Man. We said the “poll,” not “staff selections.”

Q. Do people try to cheat?

A. When was the last time somebody didn’t try and cheat a vote in Louisiana?

Q. I read on GeauxChan that all these polls are rigged and papers sell winners to the highest bidder.

A. We’re sure you also read that chemtrails are real and that the Queen of England faked her death just for a quiet life in Marrero. Don’t believe everything you read on the internet — unless, of course, you’re reading this on the internet. But seriously, while some other lists may be up for sale, Gambit’s never is. We don’t take bribes. We don’t sell spots on the lists as part of advertising

packages. And we don’t mess with who wins, even if we don’t agree with the results.

And so we’re all very clear on this: OUR POLL IS NOT RIGGED. You may not like the fact that a winner successfully got the word out among their loyalists while yours didn’t. That’s called campaigning, not rigging.

Q. Can we recall a winner, and if so, is the recall actually being orchestrated by out-of-state Big Media?

A. No. There is no recall process. We love putting in the hours and hours and HOURS of work necessary to produce the list every year, but we’re not masochists.

Q. Why isn’t Best Podiatrist a category?

This Cabernethas an intense nose with lifted vanilla aromatics balanced with red currants, violets, and mulberry fruits. It is awine thatisfirm and full on the palate with asubtle sweetness giving a rich mouth feel. The vanilla aromatics carry through on the palate andcompliment subtle flavours of redcurrants, dark cherries, and chocolate. The palate is filled with dark berry fruit and the soft tannins provide alingering finish.
