Defyingsickle cell disease
SUBMITTED ARTICLE
Sade McGrew, arecentcollege graduate, has been living with sicklecelldiseasefor 22 years. Sinceshe wasababy, shehas been under the care of herpediatric hematologistoncologist, Dr.LolieYuatChildren’sHospitalNew Orleans. Sickle cell diseaseisageneticblood conditionthatoccurswhenindividuals inherit an abnormal hemoglobin genefrom both parents.Although thereisnocure, the conditionistreatable.“Effectivemanagement of sickle cell diseaseinvolvesclose monitoring, addressingcomplicationspromptly, optimizing treatmentplans andprioritizingthe patient’s overall well-being,” said Dr.Yu.
ForSade, livingwithsicklecelldisease hasbeen adifficult journeyfilled with many challenges.
Unlikepeoplewithnormalred blood cells, Sade’s redblood cells are“sickle” or crescentshaped, which hinderstheir movement through thebloodstream.Thiscan lead to painful episodes, calledpain crises.
“The painisabsolutely excruciating butI have learnedtomanagemysymptomsby avoidingextreme temperaturechanges and being cautious in my daily activities,” said Sade.“If it is hotoutside andIwalk into an air-conditioned room,Ihavetobundle up in ahoodie or sweatshirt andsweatpants, so Iwon’t getapaincrisis.EvenwhenIwas in school,Icouldn’t be outsidefor recess very long becausethe change in temperaturehurt my joints.Ilovetoswimbut becauseofmy sicklecelldisease, Ican’t jump into thepool rightaway. Ihavetosit on theedge of the pool andlowermyselfinevery fewminutes so my body does notgointoshock andcause acrisis.”

When shewas twoyears old, doctors removedSade’sspleen, andayearlater, shehad anothersurgerytoremoveher gall bladder. Withoutaspleen, her immune system became weaker, makingher more susceptible to infections.
As achild,Sadeenduredchronic blood transfusions andexperienced recurrent upper respiratoryinfections including
severe boutswithpneumonia. Despite her challenges,Sade’s determinationand resilience neverwavered.
“AsIgot older, mypaincrises were less frequent,”saidSade.“Although Istill experience pain, I’ve learnedtocontrol my symptoms with medications.Dr. Yu hasbeen very proactiveinmytreatment. If shesees somethingconcerningearly on,she gets aheadofitbeforethe conditiongetsworse She’sbeenthere formethroughoutmy entire life.”
This past spring,Sadegraduated with a bachelor’s degree in political sciencefrom Southern Universityand nowservesasa political analystwithplans to attend law school andbecomeasports lawyer “I have many goalstoachieve andI’m not lettinganything–not evensicklecell–get in theway of it.”
