What parentsneedtoknow aboutthe newRSV vaccine
Roughly 58,000-80,000 childrenyounger than fiveare hospitalizedwithrespiratorysyncytial virus(RSV) each year.RSV is theleadingcause of hospitalizationsininfantslessthanone year of age andcases traditionally increaseduring cold andfluseason.
RSVcan causeamild,cold-likeillnesscalled bronchiolitis, butitcan also cause severe respiratorydisease andleadtohospitalization. It canbeespecially dangerous forpremature infants, babies youngerthanayearold, children under twowithchronic lung or congenital heart disease, andthose with weak immune systems, andneuromuscular disorders, including theelderly
Anew drug calledNirsevimab wasrecently approvedbythe Food andDrugAdministration (FDA)toprotect babies from RSV. The Nirsevimab RSVvaccine givesinfantsextra antibodies to help theimmunesystemin defend itself againstthe virus. Accordingto theCenterfor DiseaseControl andPrevention (CDC), thevaccine hasbeen showntoreduce theriskofbothhospitalizationsand healthcare visits forRSV in infantsbyabout 80%.
TheCDC recommendsthatinfants younger than eightmonthsreceive onedoseof Nirsevimab before or during their first RSV season. Nirsevimab is expected to be available laterthisyear, aheadofthe 2023-2024 RSV season. Parents should talk to their child’s pediatrician on thetimingofthe RSVseason, as this varies regionally
Whyimmunizations are important forkids
Vaccines like Nirsevimab helpthe immune system defend againstgerms andprotect babiesand childrenbybuildinguptheir natural defenses. One of ourbestdefensesagainst virusesand childhood illnessesistoensurethat childrenare up-to-dateontheir recommended vaccinationschedules.
Accordingtothe American Academyof Pediatrics, nationally, there hasbeen asteep drop in routineimmunizations forchildren.
