In 1924, not every home had electric lighting
10
— many people in rural areas were still relying on kerosene lanterns and candles. The Roaring ’20s were in full swing, President Calvin Coolidge was in the White House, and Prohibition was in effect (even if New Orleanians ignored it). A full century later, and technology and politics are wildly different — but over at Armstrong’s Lighting, located at 3600 Orleans Ave., one very important thing has not changed since it first opened its doors in 1924: It remains a family-owned business. “My husband’s great-uncle started the company,” says Leslie Armstrong, president of Armstrong’s Lighting. “When he passed, he had no children, and his sister took it over. She had three sons, and one was my father-in-law. Now my husband and I are in charge as the third generation.” Although Armstrong acknowledges that it hasn’t been easy, she and her husband are committed to honoring the family tradition. “We’ve endured a lot — Hurricane Katrina and then the oil spill and the economy falling apart — and had we not made serious sacrifices, we wouldn’t be here today. But we were determined that the store wouldn’t die on our watch.” Doing so, Armstrong says, means taking a hands-on approach as owners. “You have to be dedicated,” she says. “Be the merchant who lives above the store. We are not absentee owners; we don’t hand the keys over
Homeowners starting a new build or renovation project should thoroughly consider lighting.
to other employees and pray for the best. We are always here.” To mark its centennial milestone, the company designed a 100-year logo that they have displayed on shirts and throughout the store. They are planning a celebratory crawfish boil but may pivot as a drought threatens crawfish season. Over the years, Armstrong has seen lighting trends come and go and technology evolve. “It’s funny because everything always comes back around,” she says. “Right now, for example, we are back into gold. Chrome went out, but now it’s back for bathrooms and more popular than brushed nickel. It’s all cyclical, and it all comes back around.” Regardless of what’s currently popular, she advises first-time buyers to stick with what they like.
Armstrong’s Lighting offers a variety of contemporary and traditional lighting options.
The first step in any project begins with clients sharing a few pictures of decor and lighting that fit their personal aesthetic. “Once we get an idea of what their tastes are — whether it’s really, really modern or really, really traditional — we have a sense of what they’re looking for, and then we can take off and run with it,” she says. “We give suggestions and then take feedback and go from there.” They have a licensed interior designer on staff, who can help coordinate the overall look and feel of a space, as well as an experienced sales staff. “What really sets us apart is the scope of our expertise,” Armstrong says. “We have two people on our staff who have been selling lighting for over 30 years. I’ve been selling for 30 years. We have experienced people who know what they’re doing, but we also keep up with the trends.”
They also help with retrofitting LED lighting, which Armstrong says can have a huge overall effect on your home and your power bills. The energy-efficient lighting won’t heat up your house as much as traditional lighting, something that is especially welcome in the middle of a scorching New Orleans summer. She warns homeowners starting a new build or renovation project to not think of lighting as an afterthought. “Consider the scope of the whole project at first — and see where you can skimp to make sure you save enough money for lighting,” Armstrong says. “Lighting has such an impact on the feel of your home, and it’s what everybody sees when they come in. I consider lighting the jewelry of your house.” Beyond planning and budgeting for lighting, Armstrong’s biggest tip for homeowners is to not fall prey to “too good to be true” deals they might see on the internet. She says quality lighting is worth the investment, and that’s best done in person. “You can’t tell the size, scope or quality of lighting from a picture online,” she says. “You need to touch it and see it and see the finish.” Armstrong says they have a wide array of lighting options at the store. “You can make sure that what you’re seeing is what you’re going to get,” she says.
Armstrong’s has a licensed interior designer on staff and an experienced sales staff.
Lighting has a huge impact on the feel of a home, Armstrong says.
