FLORALS CAN COMPLETELY TRANSFORM A WEDDING, but once they’re cut and arranged, they unfortunately don’t have much of a shelf life. Stephanie Baker Young is changing that. Since she opened Lush Magnolia in 2020, Young and her team have taken wedding florals, encasing them in resin and turning them into tables, lamp bases, serving boards, book ends and other pieces that clients can display in their homes forever. Young, an artist with a lifelong appreciation for nature, decided to start the business after losing her job in the wedding industry during the pandemic. “During my time in the wedding field, I knew that we didn’t have anyone here that was offering flower preservation, and it was something that people were starting to ask more and more about,” she says. “I think that is tied with the more natural movement of interior design.” Though she’d worked and attended hundreds of weddings in that last decade, she says she would still get emotional at each one. “Honestly, I’ve probably worked 500 weddings, and I get teary eyed at every single one regardless of how many I work,” she says. “I love seeing people’s

love stories, and I love that I’m able to help them preserve that story in maybe a not-so-obvious way.” Lush Magnolia offers functional pieces, like furniture, as well as decorative pieces, like wall art — though all the pieces are works of art in their own right. Serving tray, tables and bookends are their most popular items, Young says, with more clients starting to opt for colored resin (black, navy, charcoal and light pink) over clear. The process is tedious. Once the flowers are at the Lush Magnolia studio on Magazine Street, they first need to be dried in a drying material, which they typically do for a few months. While they’re drying, Young will create some mock-up floral arrangement designs and show them to the client for feedback on where they want the design to go. She tries to mimic the original bouquet as much as the fragile dried flowers allow. “I really kind of let the flowers speak to me,” she says. Then, it’s time to pour the resin, which can take a week to several weeks, take it out of the mold, sand it and finish it. Next, it’s time for the top
coat, an additional protective layer of harder resin, similar to a bar top. It’s an essential part of the process to make the product look finished and protect it from scratching, but it’s also the most difficult. The team’s resin and color specialist, assisted by Young, must mix the harder resin without getting bubbles into it or even a speck of dust. If they do, they have to sand it off and restart the top coat process over again. Typically, turnaround is between six to 10 months. Clients also have the option to have color enhancement on their flowers, meaning the Lush Magnolia team will paint the flowers to look like they did when they were fresh, since the drying process changes their color. Recently, Lush Magnolia did a special commission where they created a cake stand out of sunflowers for a couple to use at their wedding. They now have the flowers from that wedding, which feature more sunflowers, and they’re turning them into other pieces to match the cake stand. “It’s just really sweet to see how we’ve touched people,” Young says. “A lot of people are incredibly grateful that we have this service. I hear oftentimes

from moms that they wish that this was an option when they got married.” Floral preservation is not new, but Young says it’s having a resurgence, with resin and pressed flowers as the most popular methods. However, she’s also noticed several resin-based flower preservationists either close their businesses or switch over to pressed flowers because of the challenges working with resin poses. “Each resin behaves differently. They also behave differently based on the temperature of the room and the humidity,” she says. “In New Orleans, keeping the humidity down and keeping the temperature constant, even indoors is difficult.” Young says she also has to educate clients that because the items are handmade, there will be imperfections and that their flowers will change colors both during drying and after they go into the resin. Despite that, Young says she is a fan of working with resin because it’s forgiving and allows the flowers to look like they’re floating. “I really love doing it, and I just can’t imagine doing something else,” she says.

Widdoss are among a a growing number of couples who choose to thrift and reuse attire, linens, vessels and other decorative items for the big day. “There were things unique to us,” she says. “They all had meaning to our lives together.” Couples may go this route over prepackaged alternatives to save money overall — or to prioritize other wedding expenditures like food or live music. Plus, reusing thrifted decor or family heirlooms can also help reduce waste. But the appeal of alternative sources for wedding decor extends beyond cost-savings and eco-friendliness. ning service, says she sees couples use heirlooms to pay tribute to and involve family, especially late relatives, on their wedding day. Couples also use these items as part of cultural or religious traditions. Incorporating decor from thrift shops and websites offering handmade items like Etsy can add a more individual and memorable touch to the event. It also gives couples a way to express their personalities and style. Some couples like the opportunity to curate their own vibe and to have the autonomy of choosing florals and decor outside of prearranged wedding packages. For example, Rayner worked with a couple who enjoyed pop music and gaming. They decorated using prayer candles featuring Britney Spears and other favorite artists, along with colorful dice used in games like Dungeons & Dragons, Rayner says. “It spoke to them. That’s who they are,” she says. “It came together perfectly for them and cost so little.” Shannon Mitch, owner of Blooms Botanica, an event-based floral design studio agrees that personalized decor can enhance the celebration. “Maybe it’s nice to have these items they already have a 19 • S PRIN G 2024
Ledford also selected a floral vessel from an estate sale.
LOGAN LEDFORD HAS BEEN THRIFTING SINCE HER TEENS, often repurposing her finds into one-of-a-kind outfits and costumes. So when the New Orleans-based graphic designer and abstract artist began planning her wedding, she knew she wanted to incorporate decor from the same places she had found so many other treasures: antique stores, estate sales and thrift shops, along with family closets and attics. The salvaged items, including vintage porcelain vessels and handkerchiefs, added special touches to the occasion, as each held a story that was tied to family and friends who helped secure them. “It just made it more meaningful and personal,” Ledford says. Ledford and her husband Zack

connection to,” she says. “It makes it more personal and unique.” One groom Mitch worked with is a glass blower who made all of the vases for a wedding. Another couple thrifted mid-century decor and various knick-knacks for their ceremony, which was performed by a drag queen. “Their decor matched their personalities,” Mitch says. Rayner says she has seen couples use vintage glassware and repurposed wine bottles as decorative candle holders or vases. One couple imposed their engagement photos on wine bottles and filled them with fairy lights. Mitch says she often works with clients to incorporate thrifted or reused vases. Recently, a bride used her grandmother’s brass collection as the main centerpieces, paying homage to her late ancestor. Another sourced a variety of candlestick holders from thrift stores, with the combination of glass, crystal, brass giving the event an eclectic Old World look that works well in many New Orleans venues, Mitch says. Ledford, the newlywed artist and designer, sourced her table centerpieces, about 20 blue and white vintage porcelain vessels, from an estate sale in the Florida Keys, with help from a family friend. As a bonus, the estate’s owner was from New Orleans. “The woman’s son handling the estate was so pleased to learn they would be returning to New Orleans to be part of a wedding,” Ledford says.
Ledford had a friend fill the vessels with orchids and accented them with Spanish moss. “They were gorgeous,” Ledford says. Couples also thrift or repurpose linens, typically renting tablecloths but turning to vintage and family linens for smaller items like second-line handkerchiefs. Ledford says she sourced her second-line hankies from family as well as eBay, Etsy and local antique stores, while Mitch says she saved money for her own wedding by thrifting some larger linens, including tablecloths. “It’s a specific look,” Mitch says. “It’s not necessarily for everybody.” Some repurpose linens for sentimental reasons. One of Mitch’s clients used her grandmother’s tablecloths for a remembrance table, an increasingly common element at weddings. Couples often use heirloom frames for family legacy or remembrance tables, which tend to include photos of late ancestors. Heirlooms often play key roles in Jewish weddings, Rayner says, as families tend to pass down nuptial canopies known as chuppahs. She’s also helped plan Persian weddings, which incorporate family heirlooms for traditions like shaking salt and pepper over the couple, which symbolizes growing old together. “I think there’s nothing more personal than including a family heirloom in your ceremony, which is what a wedding is about at the end of the day: this union,” she says.

Tips
FOR THRIFTING/ REUSING DECOR
>> Start gathering items early. Most engagements are 12-18 months in advance of the wedding date. Determine your vision early and keep your eyes out for items that fit your vision. >> Recruit family and friends to search for heirlooms and thrifted pieces. >> Consider the opening sizes of vases. The larger the opening, the more florals required. >> Florals can be reused within the ceremony and given to guests at the end. For example, bridal bouquets can be placed in vessels and used as table centerpieces. To encourage guests to take flowers home, provide Mason jars or other containers. >> Know the venue’s rules regarding open flames/candles. Rules tend to differ, with some venues allowing only LED candles and others only allowing open flames in certain areas, often requiring that candles be contained in glass cylinders.
Logan Ledford and her husband Zack Widdoss sourced decor and other elements, including clothing and jewelry, from thrift stores, estate sales and relatives.
>> Clean off items before handing them off to a florist or wedding planner.

Couples also incorporate thrifted and heirloom items into their attire, often imbuing special meaning. Ledford wore her late aunt’s “add-apearl” necklace, a delicate gold chain filled with 22-seed pearls. She wore her mother’s 1970s Priscilla of Boston debutante dress, which later became her mother’s wedding dress, adding a train with a fabric print Ledford designed herself using antique and vintage illustrations in the public domain. The print design included flora and fauna symbolic of the couple’s home states, Louisiana (bride) and New Jersey (groom), containing John James Audubon’s pelican illustration. The fabric was printed by Spoonflower, and then Brik Allen of Project Runway fame designed, patterned and constructed the train. However, thrifting and repurposing decor and attire takes time, so it’s an option that works best for couples who aren’t in a huge rush to walk down the aisle. A longer planning period allows time to add to their collections. Ledford said her engagement period doubled from 18 months 3 years due to the pandemic, giving her “insane amounts of time” to look for items that would fit the aesthetic. But Rayner says the search is part of the fun and adds to the anticipation of the wedding day. “By collecting glassware or linens throughout the year, it extends the excitement and build up for the big day,” she says.
