WonjilagrewupinAddisAbaba,the capitalofEthiopia.Shewasachampion gymnastwhoexcelledonthefloor exercisesandbalancebeamandwasa memberofthecountry’snationalteam Inwhatseemedlikeastrokeofgood fortune,sheandseveralothergymnasts wereofferedscholarshipstostudyin China,andtheywent.
“Therewasamisunderstanding,” Wonjilasays.“Itwasacircusschool, notagymnasticsschool.Ethiopiasent thebestgymnaststheyhad.Wegot thereandwedidn’tspeakChinese, andtheydidn’tspeakAmharic.Sowe startedtraining.”
Becauseofherlonglegs,Wonjila waschosentostudyfootjuggling.She learnedtojuggletables,largepotsand otherthingswhilelyingonherback Shealsomasteredothertricks,likehat jugglingandspinningplates.
Noothercountrysentskilledgymnaststotheschool,sotheEthiopians hadabigadvantage.
“Webecamethebeststudents, sotheygaveusanotheryearandwe traveledaroundChinaperforming,” Wonjilasays.
WhentheyreturnedtoEthiopia, theyweremetwithflowersfromthe Ethiopiangymnasticfederationatthe airport,Wonjilasays.Itwantedthemto competeattheAll-AfricaGames,but theyhadn’tdonegymnasticstrainingin twoyears.
SomeofthemreturnedtoChina,but WonjilawenttoGermanytocontinue hercircuscareer.Eventually,she workedintheMiddleEastandTurkey, beforebeinghired—alongwithsome oftheotherformerEthiopiangymnasts —toworkatasafariparkinSanDiego, whereshenowlives
Wonjilafeels fortunateaboutthe transitionoutof gymnastics,which haslimitsasacompetitivecareer.

Stonehasbeenaguitar-wielding singer-songwriterplayingsolomaterialforyears,firstinNewyorkCity andtheninNewOrleans.younce, whoisoriginallyfromtheWestCoast, playsbassinSouthernsoul-rock bandThemOl’Ghostsandco-owns theshopStrangeGuitarworks.And Ferreira,whoisfromBrazil,drums withtheheavy,bluesypsychband HighBlackRiver(formerlySpitfire) andseveralotheroutfits.
WithWarBunnies,thetriofrom differentpartsoftheWestern Hemispherewantedtodrilldownon simpleyetchargedupsongwriting. Thatfocuscanbeheardontheband’s recentlyreleaseddebutEP,“What youWanted,”whichcanbefoundon musicstreamingplatforms.
“IttookAaronsoupingupabass formetobelike,allright,I’mgonna leanintothisinstrumentandplayless busyandgetintotheheartofwhat songsare,”Stonesays.“Withlike fivenotes,youenduphavingamuch moredirectmessage.”
“That’ssortofahallmarkofour sound,isjustlettingthisspacebepart ofthemusic,”younceadds.“There’s onlythreeofusonstageanyway There’sonlysomuchnoisewe’re makinganyway.”
While“WhatyouWanted”isa full-onalternativerockrecord,there’s clearpunkandmetalleaningsinWar Bunnies’music.They’renotdoing anythingfranticoroverlyaggressive, butthebandissettingupagroove andamoodandallowingspacetobea character,youncesays
Stoneandyouncestartedwriting musictogetherin2021.Thetwofirst usedadrummachine,whichcanbe heardon“Spaceforyou,”theirblunt
“tokenbreak-upballad”—“Ididn’t meantomakeyoufeellikeyoudidn’t meananything,butyoudidn’t.”
Theyquicklyrealizedthedrum machinewasn’tgoingtogivethe energytheywantedinaliveshow,so StoneandyounceconvincedFerreira (alreadybusywiththreeoriginal bands)tojointhemondrums.
WarBunnieshadtheirfirstshow asatrioinAugust2022atZonyMash atapartyfortheNewOrleansArts Rag,whichStonefoundedandedits. Anyonecanbeawarbunny,Stone says,andthebandhassincebuilta followingofwarbunniesaround NewOrleans.
Stone,younceandFerreira recordedthesix-song“Whatyou Wanted”lastyearatArtisoundonSt Claude,andthealbumwasmixedand masteredbyaudioengineerJustin Armstrong,whohasworked onalbumsbyDeftones,LizPhair andAudioslave.
Whilethesong“Spaceforyou” isaboutabreak-upyouncewent through,therearen’talotofsongs explicitlyaboutexeson“Whatyou Wanted.”It’sanEPaboutpickingup thepiecesandgrowing—radicalselfcare,Stonecallsit.
“Withthebanditself,there’sbeen alotofgrowthandhealingasatheme becausewe’reclosefriends,”Stone says.“Andeachtimewepresent anythingtothegroup,there’sthis encouragement:yes,thatdeservesto bebigger.Thatdeservestobelouder. Thatdeservestobeshared.”
