“umbilical”isrelativelyfasterand moreaggressivethanpastThoufulllengthalbums.Listenerswillpickupthe spiritandintensityofhardcorepunkon thealbum—althoughfilteredthrough Thou’slens.It’sanaturalreflectionof abandthathasalwayswornitspunk backgroundandethosonitssleeve.

Itwasn’tdeliberate,saysguitarist AndyGibbs.“Itwasjustamatterof ourversionofahardcoresentiment, whichiswhatwenormallydo,buta littlefasterandaggressive,alittlemore dumb,”hesays

Overthelastdecadeorso,Thou’s profilehasonlygrown,andthebandhas becomedistinguishedforitsheavy,thick yetsprawlingmusic.Thoustartedin 2005andhadalreadybuiltaheavingfollowingamongDIymetalandpunkcommunitiesbythetimethegroupreleased theirfourthfull-length,“Heathen,”in 2014.Therecordpushedthebandintoa brighterspotlight—whichwasintensifiedbythe2018album“Magus.”

Afewthreadshaveledtothemore aggressivesoundon“umbilical.”After drummerTylerCoburnjoinedThou in2018,therewerethoughtstowrite materialthatwouldallowCoburnto letloose,saysbassistMitchWells. ThoualsoincludesguitaristsMatthew ThudiumandKCStafford.

Theconceptbecameeasier,Gibbs says,afterThoucollaboratedin2022 withdoomandblackmetalartist Mizmor,whopushedThoutowarda “back-to-the-rootsstyle.”

“umbilical”wasrecordedbyfrequent collaboratorJamesWhittenathis HighTowerRecordinginnewOrleans, andThouemployedproduction techniquesthatharkenedbacktotheir earliestreleases,like2007full-length “Tyrant”andsplitsandePsthatcan beheardonthecollection“Oakland.” Forthefirsttimeinyears,Gibbsand Thudiumrecordedtheirguitarpartsin theroomwiththeamps,allowingthem togetthefeedbacktheyneeded.

ThealbumwasmasteredbyJames Plotkinandincludesadditionalvocals byemilyMcWilliams(whoperforms asSilverGodling),DerekZimmerand MichaelBerdan.

Decadesago,theS&WBandthe cityagreedthatCityHallwouldbe responsibleforcleaningcatch basinsanddrainagelineslessthan 36inchesindiameter.TheS&WB retainedresponsibilityforthemain drainagelines

In1922,Hubert,whohadoperated adrugstoreatClaiborneandGovernor nichollsfor14years,openedasecond locationatthesiteonnapoleonand Broad.AnApril1922Times-Picayune advertisementpromisedhewould “maintain,inhisnewPharmacyno.2, thesamehigh-gradeclassofservice andthesamereliableaccuracythathas markedhiscareerinthepast.”

In1930,thepropertychangedhands andbecamepartofthelocalWorner drugstorechain,whichalsoincluded astoredowntownonCanalStreet

Inthemid-1960s,aTimeSaver conveniencestoreopenedatthespot. Itwasthe21stoutletofthelocalchain, whichwasfoundedin1954.TimeSaver remainedinbusinessatnapoleon andBroaduntil1993.Followingthat, accordingtotheuptownMessenger,the propertylostitscommercialzoning.For severalyears,theownertriedunsuccessfullytorevivethebuilding,which satvacantandblighted.

InanApril1975Times-Picayunearticle,Armstrong,whowasmarriedandthe motheroftwo,saidshefound“littlerealdiscrimination”inherfirstjobasJuvenile Courtjudge,despitebeingaBlackwomaninapredominantlymalefieldatthe time.Butshesaidshedidencounterwhatshecalledstereotyping.

“Alotoftimes,I’llbeintroducedasJudgeArmstrong,andthepersonwillstart lookingaround.Isay,‘I’mJudgeArmstrong,’andtheysay,‘Really?’”shesaid. Therecipientofnumerousawardsduringhercareer,Armstrongretiredfromthe benchin2011after37yearsofservice,whichmadeherthelongest-servingjudge inthestateatthetime.Shediedin2018.

Aformerfamily-ownedbutcher shopandcateringbusiness,theplace neededworkbuthadenoughspace forseriouskingcakeproduction.The couplecleaneditupandoutfittedit forbakingintimetochurnoutmore than7,000kingcakesduringMardi Grasseason

“WeusedtodoitatTartine,”she says.“Theywereeverywhere.Itjust wasn’tbigenough.”

Oncetheseasonwasover,Benson decideditwastimetousethespace for“somethingfun.”

Afterafewmonths oftrialanderror, Bensoncreatedher owngluten-freeflour mixusingriceflour, cornmealandtapiocastarch.Onewall ofherbakingkitchen islinedwithlabeled binsusedtomake everythingfrom bagelstoscones, wrapsandsandwichbread.

“Withthiskindof baking,youforget everythingyou know,”shesays. “youwanttoover mix,insteadofbeing sogentle,because you’renotcreating gluten,”shesays.

Andwhileshedoes offersandwicheson regularsourdough, bagelsandbaguettesmadeatTartine anddelivereddaily,herkitchenisvirtuallyfreeofcrosscontamination.For 2025,HenHousewillclosefromJan.1 throughMardiGras.Thenafteratopto-bottomdeepclean,thegluten-free productionkitchenwillreturn.

“Iconsideritadreamfulfilled,” Ribachoneksays.“Wemadeitthrough alot,andwegottobepartofeveryone’s celebrations.We’vehadourupsand downs,butit’sbeenagreatexperience.”

Thebusinesshasbeenhealthy, andfinancialsarenottheissue. Ribachoneksaysthedecisiontoclose turnedonchangesinhisownlifeand therecognitionthathewantstodo differentthings.

Butherownexaminationofthe issueismuchfunnierandnotentirely irreverent.Shehasaproposalshecalls theShaquilleO’nealRule:Insteadof keepingtranswomenoutoftheWnBA, leteveryteamhaveonetransplayer. “That’llmakedraftdayalotmoreexciting,”shesays normanisontour,andthatincludes astopthisweekatnewOrleans’ LGBTLOLQueerComedyFestival, happeningatvenuesacrosstownMay 30throughJune2.
