AfterHurricaneKatrinaandthe federalleveefailuresdisplacedher family,GreenlivedinOklahomaCity forseveralyears.Duringthattime,she startedsinginginfrontofcrowdsmore anddevelopedherchops.
ShemovedbacktonewOrleans around2016andprettyquicklystarted abuskingband.“Amusicianaskedme ifIwantedtositin,comeintotheclub andsingafewsongs,andthat’swhat startedit,”Greensays.“Istartedaband withinthreemonthsofmovingback home,andthatwashistory.”
Greenandherband,then-called TheSoulMachine,becamearegular presenceonFrenchmenStreet—particularlyCafenegril—andlocalfestivals, performingsoulfuloriginalsandcovers inarangeofstyles.Thebandalso releasedanePin2019.
Recently,Greenbeganworkingwith artistmanagersAdamShipley,Jude ChauvinandRuebenWilliams,and thetrioofveteranmanagersentered intoaco-managementcollaboration. That’saroundwhenTheSoulMachine adoptedthenewnameTheGiants. “Iwantedthebandtolookbig, becausewithouttheband,Iwouldn’t haveanything,”Greensays.“Iwanted themtostandoutasmuchasIdid,sowe wentwithSierraGreen&TheGiants.”

TheCityCouncil’sratingsalso remainedthesamebutwere substantiallyhigherthanthemayor, with48%ofrespondentsapprovingoftheirworkand37%disapproving.Thesurveyhasamarginof erroris3.5%.
Optimismaboutthedirectionthe cityisheadednotchedup,butconsideringtheoverwhelminglynegative responsetothatquestionlastyear, it’snotexactlycauseforcelebration.Thisyear,28%ofrespondents thoughtthingswereontheupswing comparedto19%in2023.
“Thedatafromlastyearwasjust awful.ThequestionIhadlastyear was:havewehitbottom,”said
Faucheux.“Thecrimeratewas high.everybodywasatlowpoints There’sbeenalittlebounceback.” Crimedown,ratingsup Crimeisdown27%thisyear,an improvementthatshowedupinthe approvalratingsofPoliceChiefAnne KirkpatrickandDistrictAttorney JasonWilliams Kirkpatrickisofftoastrong startinherfirstyearatthehelm ofthenOPD,witha49%approval ratinganda20%disapprovalrating.That’sasix-pointimprovement inbothdirectionscomparedthe interimchief,MichelleWoodfork, whowasalsorelativelypopular andonceafavoriteforthepermanentjob.
Cantrellcanclaimcreditfor appointingbothWoodforkand Kirkpatrick,and,despiteachieving zeroimprovementinheroverall rating,shesawafive-pointbump whenparticipantswereaskedifthey approvedofhowshehandledcrime, from24%in2023to29%thisyear.
Williams,meanwhile,isfindinghis footingaftersheddingtheprogressiveprosecutorlabelandrunninga moreconventionaldistrictattorney’soffice,Faucheuxsaid.TheDA earneda45%approvalratingand 38%disapprovalrating,basically flippinglastyear’sresults.

FrenchQuarterFestival,essence Festandmajorsportingevents haveallreceivedthedesignation. Restrictionsonbusinessactivitiesin asmallareaaroundtheFairgrounds duringthenewOrleansJazz& HeritageFestivalarewritteninto thecitycode.
Inapresentationbeforethecouncil onThursday,JadeBrownRussell, aconsultantrepresentingessence, emphasizedthatcleanzoneshave alonghistoryinthecityandthat businesses’regularactivitiesare notrestricted.
Thegoalofthecleanzone,Brown Russellsaid,istodeterbigbrandsfrom descendingonthecityincompetition withessence’scorporatesponsors “Thecleanzoneisnotaimedattryingtoharmorhurtsmallbusinesses,” BrownRussellsaid Theproposedordinanceonthe councilagendawasnearlyidentical totheessenceFest2023ordinance,
Localbusinessownersand advocatesarguethatgivingessence thepowertoapproveexemptions amountedtothecitygivingaprivate companytheauthoritytoregulate publicstreets.

Intherun-uptonextmonth’sannual essenceFestivalofCulture,Mayor LaToyaCantrell’sadministrationasked thenewOrleansCityCounciltoenact asweeping(punintended)cleanzone ordinancethatwouldhavesuspended allexistingpermitsforbusinesses operatingonpublicstreets,sidewalks andrights-of-wayinseveralofthe city’sbusiestneighborhoods
Theproposedordinancerequired anyonewishingtoconductbusiness, advertiseorpromotegoodsand services,hostagathering,orevenraise flags,bannersorballoonsinpublicto firstgetpermissionfromessence—or facefinesandjailtime.
Thepurposeofcleanzoneordinancesistoprotecteventsponsors fromunfair“ambushmarketing” bycompetitors.Sponsorspayhuge sumstohaveexclusivepromotional rightsandaccesstopatrons,andthey deservereasonableprotections.
However,theadministration’sproposedordinancewassoall-encompassingthatitwouldhaveshutdown —absentessenceapproval—uber andLyftintourist-heavydowntown, LuckyDogvendorsintheFrench Quarter,Herbsaintandotherpopular restaurants’sidewalkandcurbside tables,andevenbillboardadvertisementsalongthePontchartrain expresswaydowntown.
Suchbroadprohibitionsareflagrantlyunconstitutional,yetthey’re prettymuchwhatnewOrleansand othermajor-eventhostcitieshave routinelyadoptedfordecades.
Fortunately,enoughconcerned citizensandconstitutionallawyers spokeupintimeforthecouncilto
hastilyamendthemayor’sproposed ordinanceintimeforessenceFest.
Theamendmentsreducetheclean zone’sfootprintbyexcludingportions oftheMarignyandotherneighborhoods.Theyalsorestorethecity’srole asthesolearbiterofwhat’sallowed andwhat’sprohibitedonpublic streets,sidewalksandrights-of-way— andremovetheprovisionsuspending existingpermits.
