TheNewOrleansShakespeare FestivalatTulanepresents“Julius Caesar”asthehighlightofitssummerseries.ItrunsatlupinTheater July11-21.

Thedramahasmanytimelyfacets aspowerfulRomansvieforandtryto limitthepowerofothers.

“Weusethewords‘conspiracy’and ‘insurrection,’andtheymeansomethingverydifferentthanifwedidthis play20yearsago,”saysSalvatore Mannino,whoisdirectingtheshow. Intheearlydaysat Tipitina’s,I’doften goacrosstheneutralgroundtogeta cheaper(andfaster) beeratthebarcalled theRoseTattoo.It’s longsinceclosed,butIthink it’snowanartgallery. What’sthestory?

DearJames, THEBRIGHTGREENBUILDINGAT4401 TCHOUPITOULASST.,directlyacross NapoleonAvenuefromTipitina’s,has acolorfulhistory.Whileyouremember itastheRoseTattoobarandmusicclub fromthe1980s,ithasbeenhometoa numberofotherbarsovertheyears. Originallybuiltasaresidence, newspaperlistingsfromthe1940s and’50sshowtheaddressasSeeger’s RestaurantandBar,thenVoelkel’s Inthe1960s,itbecameAlPayne’s BarandRestaurant.Itchanged handsseveraltimesinthelate’60sto becomelee’s,D&P,theSeaman’sBar andRed’sBarnlounge.Inthe1970s,it becameBetty’sPlayhouse.

Theclubclosedinlate1984or early1985.In1993,artistandjewelry designerThomasMannboughtthe building,whichbythenwasrundown Heperformedanextensiverenovation,turningthebuildingintoagallery, studioandresidence,withtheold woodenbarfromtheRoseTattooservingasthekitchencounter.

NEWORLEANSWASHOMETOONEOFTHELENGTHIESTANDMOSTVIOLENTTRANSIT STRIKESinAmericanhistory95yearsagothismonth.

Thefourmonth-longstreetcarstrikeinvolvedmorethan1,100motormenand conductorswhoweremembersoftheAmalgamatedAssociationofStreetand ElectricRailwayEmployeesofAmerica,Division194.

Theysoughtbetterpayandworkingconditionsandtussledovertheirunion’s powerinnegotiationswithNewOrleansPublicServiceInc.(NOPSI),thecompany whichoperatedthecity’stransit,electricityandgasservices.

Accordingtoa2012articlebyhistorianMichaelMizell-Nelson,forthefirstfew daysofthestrike,nostreetcarsoperatedinthecity.WhenNOPSIattemptedto runthecarsbysendingin“strikebreakers”fromothercities,thestrikingworkers andtheirsupportersreactedviolently.Theyambushedthestrikebreakerswhen theyarrived,beatingandhurlingbricksatthem

OnJuly5,1929,acrowdof10,000watchedasstrikingworkersattackedand burnedastreetcaronCanalStreet.Theviolentprotestscontinuedforweeks— withstrikersevenattackingCityHall.

Throughoutthemonthsofprotests,atleasttwostrikerswerekilledandhundredsofpeopleonbothsidesinjured.ThestrikefinallyendedinOctober1929 Amidsttheacrimony,onepositivedevelopmentemerged:itpopularizedthepoorboysandwich.Althoughrecentresearchhasshownthecity’snow-signaturesandwich existedbefore1929,MartinBrothersCoffeeStandhelpedexpanditspopularity. Steppingoutontothestreetthat’sextradarkthankstoperpetuallyblown streetlights,youglanceatyourphone.He’sjustabouttoturnontoyourblock Youshoveyourphoneintoapocketandlooktowardthecorner.

Duringthedrive,themanbehindthemobile,MiltonLadneroffersyouavariety ofShrekplushiestohold.He’salsoreadytoqueueupSmashMouth’s“AllStar”at anygivenmoment.Sometimeshe’llevendressuplikeShrek.

Butatthispoint,hisstardom extendswellbeyondtheUptown universities.AJune21TikTokapassengerpostedofthevanhasgarnered morethan1.3millionlikesand4.8 millionviewsandcounting.“The universegiftedme ShrekUber,”the captionreads.

“SomebodytoldmetodaywhenI wasleavingwork,‘Youknowyou’re famous?’Isaid,‘Yeah,Iknow,’”Ladnersays,laughing.

He’shadatasteofinternetfame before.Shortlyafterheinstalledthe holographicShrekhead,apassenger tookavideothatendeduponBarstool Sportsin2022,whichdubbedthe ShrekMobile“themostelectricthing you’llcomeacrosstoday.”

Nobody’sbeenwatchingthestats onthelatestvideomorecloselythan Ladner,andhe’sbeenexcitedlyupdatinghiswifeoneverymilestone.

“Ienjoyeveryminuteofit,me,” hesays.“I’mlike,‘Look,it’sat 100,000views!Ohlook,nowit’sata millionwithin24hours!Oooh,nowit’s at3million!’”

ATRUCKDRIVERforthepast decade.Whenrideshareappsstarted operatinginNewOrleans,hefiguredit wouldbeagoodwaytobringinsome extracash.

Itwasn’tuntil2022thathedecided totransformthevanheusesforLyft andUberridesintotheShrekMobile.

Thebrightgreenglowupwasn’t entirelyoutofleftfieldforLadner. Inadditiontobeingatruckdriver, LadnerhasalsobeenaShreksuperfan sincethefirstmoviecameoutin2001.

“It’samoviethatkidsenjoy,but adultsenjoyitmorebecausetheyget thejokes,”hesays

“Shrek,he’sjustthatnormalguy thathappenedtofallinlovewithhis Fiona,”addsLadner,whohasbeen marriedtohisownFiona,Ramona,for 35years.

Thesimilaritiesbetweenthetwo don’tendthere.Ladnerbearsan uncannyresemblancetoShrek,espe-

ciallyoncehedonshiscostume,and likeShrek,he’saloveablecharacter Intheearly2000s,thenow-abandonedJazzland-turned-SixFlagswas havingaHalloweenevent.Ladner’s wifesuggestedhegodressedas Shrek.Ladnerjumpedattheidea, thoughhehadn’tquiteperfectedthe lookthatfirstgo-around “AllIdidwaspaintmyselfgreen, andpeoplethoughtIwastheHulk,” hesays

Sincethen,Ladnerhasacquired ogreears,atunicandvest,leavingno roomforconfusion.He’sbeentomultipleconventionscosplayingasShrek —includingBigEasyConandWizard World—withhiswifesometimes accompanyinghimdressedasFiona. Ifthatwasn’tevidenceenough ofhisfandom,justaskLadnerwho hisfavoriteShrekcharacteris—aside fromShrekhimself,obviously Whilemostpeople’sknowledgeof theShrekcinematicuniversedrops offafterthesecondmovie,Ladner hasanencyclopedicunderstanding oftheentirefranchise.Andhe’s quicktorattleofftriviafrom“Shrek ForeverAfter,”thefourthinstallment oftheseries.

SowhenLadnerdecidedhewanted hisvantohaveatheme,itwaspretty obviouswhatitwouldbe.

It’sbeenasavvybusinessmove, withcustomerstippingmorethan theywouldforarideinanon-Shrekthemedvehicle.Hesaysacustomera fewweeksagotippedhim$50. Whenwefirststarted,weweremakingitupaswewentalong.Therearen’t alotofguidelines.Everyoneknows aboutartmuseums.There’sonein everytownpractically.Butpeople don’tknowwhatafoodmuseumis Thatgaveusalotoffreedom. Foodiseverything.It’slife.Thisis somethingeveryoneexperiences.As muchasartisawonderfuladditionto theworld,youcouldlivewithoutit Foodissoquotidianthatpeopleforget aboutitandtakeitforgranted.SoFAB representstheplacethatfoodhasin ourculture.It’severythingfromfast foodandcomfortfoodtohautecuisine.Wealsodidanexhibitonhunger andphotographsofstarvingpeople. There’sasensethat‘thisrelates tome.’It’ssomethingeveryonecan identifywith.It’sdifferentthanwhat youfindinothermuseums.There areafewdifferentcategoriesof responseswe’vegotten.Peoplewho areofretirementageoftenfeelvery nostalgic.Theyrememberthingslike oldpackagingoranoldrefrigerator, likeoneofthefirstrefrigerators.They enjoyitasamemory.

W: Wedecidedtotakepoliticsoutof ourconceptionoftheSouth.When (Dwight)Eisenhowercamebackfrom WorldWarII,hehadexperiencedthe AutobahninGermany,whichwasa seriesofhighwaysthatconnectedthe wholecountry.Hedecidedweneed tohaveafederalhighwaysystemlike thatintheu.S.Theytookthefour quadrantsandlookedatthegeography andhowtoputittogether.Westole thatidea.Thisisthesoutheastofthe u.S.It’snottheMason-Dixonline.We alsodidn’tcutanystateinhalforeliminateitifitwasn’tfullyinthequadrant.
