ThechoreographerandassistantchairoftheTulaneUniversity DepartmentofTheatreandDancehas traveledextensively,fromannualtrips totheedinburghFestivalFringeto recenttripsbuildingconnectionswith danceartistsinChile.
Lastyear,shefoundedthe InternationalDanceFestivalNew Orleans,andoneofthemaincomponentswashostingatrioofChilean dancersfromValparaiso.
Thefestivalofcontemporary movementanddancereturnsforits seconditerationthisweek,running Sept.12-15atvenuesacrosstown. Anothercontingentofmovement artistsiscomingfromChile,thistime fromValdivia.Therealsoisanew DanceFilmFestivalportionofthe festival,andScott’sBodyartDance Companywillpresentanexcerpt fromherpiecereflectingonher Midwesternupbringing.

“Wespliteverythingevenlyandfairlybasedupon whatyoudidonthe(collective)track.Peoplethat weren’tsignedupforBMIandASCAPandpublishing entities,wegotthemsignedupsotheycangetmailboxmoney,”Yusufsays “Wejustwantedtoshow everybodywecandomorethanjustmakesongs together.Wecandobusinesstogether,too,anddo itfairly.”
Backin2019,Pell,YusufandCameronwerespendingalotoftimetogetherontheroad.
Pell,aNewOrleansnative,hadbeenlivinginLos Angelessince2015,afterthesuccessofhisdebut album,“FloatingWhileDreaming,”catapultedhim ontoanationalstage.EvenontheWestCoast,hestill foundhimselfoftenrecordingwithmusiciansfrom NewOrleans,likePJMorton,andfrequentlyreturningtohishometowntoworkwithlocalmusicians.
Yusuf,achildhoodfriendofPell’s,hadstudiedlaw atTulaneUniversityandfoundhiswayintothemusic industry,includingastintatalabelinNewYorkCity. WhenPelllaunchedhiscareerin2014,Yusufbecame histourmanager.
Meanwhile,Cameron alsoaNewOrleansnative whohadlivedontheWestCoastandMidwest workinginthemusicindustrybeforereturningto hishometown wasthetourmanagerforTankand theBangas.SowhenPellwastappedtoopenfor TankandtheBangasonanationaltourfollowingthe releaseoftheiralbum“GreenBalloon,”thethree menspenttimetalkingaboutNewOrleansmusicand whatwasmissing.
“Onthattour,wealljusthadtheseconversations aboutthe[NewOrleans]musicscene,”Yusufsays “Thesameconversationsthateverybodyhasabout howwe’renotconnectedanddon’tworktogether Howdowefostermorecreativityandconnective tissueandbetterrelationships?”
ThoseconversationsalsoechoedonesPellwas havingwithNewOrleansartistswhowouldvisithim ontheWestCoast,likeprorducerMalikNinety-Five. Afterthetour,Pell,CameronandYusufleftfeeling inspiredtomoveonaproject.
BackinLA,Pellstartedworkingonwhat wouldbecome“glblwrmng,vol.1” rightasthe COVID-19pandemichit.Withtheworldpaused,Pell
reachedouttotheartistsbackhomehewantedto workwith,like$leazyEZ,Kr3wcial,NesbyPhipsand KennethBrother.
“Theworldwasendingineverybody’smind,soit wasnowornever,”hesays “Ithinkthatmadethings cometogetheralotquickerthantheywouldhavehad wenotallbeeninside.”
Asthepandemicdraggedintolate-2020andearly-2021,PelldecidedtomovebacktoNewOrleans. Andthescopeofglblwrmngonlycontinuedtogrow, fromarecordingprojectintoanambitiousinitiative tobuildupyoungNewOrleansmusicians,especially BlackandBrownartists.
“Iremembertheeraofthecampsandcliquesand possesandhowtherewasjustsomuchpowerin that,”saysCameron,pointingtooutfitslikeWu-Tang ClanandRuffRyders Atlanta’sDungeonFamilywas aninfluenceonhisowngroup,theLiberatedSoul CollectivewithTarriona“Tank”Ball,ElliotLuvand SybilShanell.
“IwasblessedtogrowupinanerawhereIsaw BlackbusinesscombinedwithBlacktalentanditwas working.Peopleweremakingmoney lookingback theyshouldhavebeenmakingmore,”Cameronsays
“IgottoseeBlackbusinessasamusicbusiness reallystarttothrive,”headds.“Now,we’reina differentworld.Theset-upoftheindustrynow isintentionallysothatnotasmanypeoplethrive likethat.”
NewOrleanshashaditsshareofhip-hopcollectives.Oneofthebestknown,Psychowardfeatured 28membersinthemid-1990s,includingMacPhipps Intheearly2000s,therewasMediaDarlingRecords. “Butithasn’treallybeendonetothisdegree, whereit’sbeenconsistentreleases,consistentshows andcollaboration thathasn’thappenedinawhile,” saysAlfredBanks.
GLBLWRMNGLAUNCHEDinFebruary2021 withthesingle“504”andacolorfulvideoproduced bythecompanyRedBalloon.Todate,“504”has rackedupmorethanamillionstreamsonSpotify. It’sbecomethecollective’ssignaturetrack,andthe groupperformedthesongduringaNewOrleans PelicansgameintheSmoothieKingCenter.

Kr3wcial,whogrewupontheWestBankwith afatherandbrotherwhoalsoaremusicians,has knownmostofglblwrmngforyears.He,$leazyEZ, ShaoGroveCoalandPeacetheOGhadtheirown collectivecalledLocalsOnly,andheandPellgoback morethanadecade.
“Forme,thisisallmyfriendswhoknoweach other,andImetthemseparatelyalongtheway,” Kr3wcialsays “Wejustkeptworkingaroundand witheachother.”
WhenPellandhiscollaboratorsstartedworking on“vol 1,”thingsmovedfromgroup-creatingtoalso welcomingsubmittedsongs.Kr3wcialdecidedtotoss inasonghehadworkedonacoupleyearsprior.
HewassharingastudiospacewithproducerNiyo Davinci,whowasthefirstproducerKr3wcialever boughtabeatfrom.Heboughtthebeatfor“504” andstartedworkonit,recordinghisverse,averse by$leazyEZandatrumpetbreakdownbyBrandon “Mouse”Bierria.
“Buttimepassed,andIletthesongsitonmy computerfortwoyears,”Kr3wcialsays,until“vol 1” camearound.ThecollectiverecordedaversebyPell andfinishedthetrack.
AfterDavinciwaskilledinthespringof2020, thegroupdecidedtorelease“504”asitsfirstsingle.
“Thesongbecamekindofrootedinhisremembrance,”Kr3wcialsays “Itwasalsowhatsome peoplebegantotellmewasagreatinterpretation ofwhatthecitysoundsandfeelslikewithouthaving tobeovertlyviolentorcrassinanyparticularway.”
