Soforherfirstfull-lengthalbum, “TellittotheWind,”clarkwanted topullallofthosestringstogether. Shewantedto“tellithowIseeit,” shesays.

“Thisalbumhastakenmemy wholelifetowrite,”clarksays.“It takesawhileforlifetogiveyouthe experiences,andittakestimeforyou tobebraveenoughtostandinyour ownstory.”

“TellittotheWind”wasreleased Oct.4onAniDiFranco’srighteous Baberecords.

Thereleaseof“TellittotheWind” comesatatimeofgrowthandpositive changeforclark,shetoldGambit clark,whorecentlyturned40,has hadalotofexcitingcareermoments overthelastfewyears,liketouring withrussell,playingwithBrandi carlile,singingasongshewrote alongsideDiFrancoandpayingtribute toTracychapmanattheFolkAlliance Internationalawards.

Butamidallit,shesays,she alsowascomingintoherownnot onlyasasolomusicianbutalsoas aperson.

“Theperiodoftransitionisreally comingtopeacewiththedisparatepartsofmyself:mychristian upbringing,myqueerness,”clark says.“comingtopeacewiththose thingsandreallybringingthemall togetherandpresentingJoyclark’s artistry.It’scomingintomyown andrealizingwhatmystorycan offerpeople.”

Whenshestartedcollegeatthe UniversityofNewOrleans,clark startedwritingmoreofherownmusic andperformingatopenmicsaround town—andlearningtobeherfullself. Thoseopenmicsquicklyledherto joiningSoulkestraandcyrilNeville’s bandalongwithplayingwithpianist LilliLewisandmanyothers.

clarkultimatelymetBeckerand askedhertoproduce“Tellittothe Wind.”Beckerco-wrotesixofthe ninetracksonthealbum,whenclark wouldhappentobeinNashvillein late2022andearly2023orduring FaceTimecalls.

“BeingabletoworkwithMargaret, whowasveryassociatedinmychurch time itfeelsalittlelikebeingvindicated,”clarksays.“ThefactthatI’m gaydoesn’tmeanthosesongsdidn’t havepowerorthatfeelingdidn’t[have power].Itmeansevenmorenowthat wewereabletofindeachotherand puttogetherthisbodyofwork.It makesitevenmorepowerful.”

Tobeclear,despiteclark’shistorywiththechurchandBecker’s

involvement,“TellittotheWind”is definitivelynotachristianalbum. It’sanAmericanarecordshowcasing clark’smusicalrange.

Sheleftthecitycouncilchambers swiftlywithouttakingquestions. Hersecond-in-command,Gilbert Montaño,whoisalsoimplicatedin theindictmentofinspectionfirm ownerrandyFarrell,remainedto finishthepresentation.

Theallegationsintheindictment willnodoubtfurthererodeNew Orleanians’faithintheirlocalgovernment,whichmanyalreadyblamefor qualityoftheirroads,waterandelectricalservice,saidedchervenak,a politicalscientistattheUniversityof NewOrleansanddirectorofUNO’s Surveyresearchcenter.

Despitetheforward-lookingnatureoftheannual event,cantrellchosetolook backwardbytreatingherself toaramblingairingofgrievancesagainsthercritics.

“HowIcameinseemstobe howI’mgoingout,”shetold thecouncil.“Accusationafter accusationafteraccusation—butalsoa trackrecordofdeliveringresults.”

Puttingasidecantrell’seffortsto painttwoongoingfederalinvestigations thathaveimplicatedherindozensof allegedcrimesasmerely“accusations,” herstatementraisesaninteresting question:Howmanysignificantresults hasshedeliveredforthecity?

Theanswer,perhapspredictably,is farlessthanshe’dhavethe publicbelieve

cantrellalsohasoverseenwhat couldbecomethebeginningofthe endofthefederalconsentdecree governingtheNewOrleansPolice Department.Aftermorethanadecade ofJusticeDepartmentsupervision,the cityandDOJlastmonthjointlyasked afederaljudgetoletNOPDenterthe decree’s“sustainability”phase

U.S.DistrictJudgeSusieMorgan isexpectedtoruleonthatrequestin thenexttwomonths—amidlingering questionsabouthowsuccessfully NOPDhasendedpolicemisconduct. eveninhersuccess,however, cantrellwasherownworstenemy. L: Duringthepandemic,alotofpeoplesaid,“Man,IwishIcouldhaveyour cooking.”Iwaslike,Itellyouwhat,I’ll putonFacebookwhatIamservingfor theweek.ThenonWednesday,people wouldcomepickitupfrommyporch. everybodywouldmaskupandcome pickuptheirfood.Itwasjustoncea weekanditwasjustforfun

IamallovertheplacewhenIcook. Tacosjusthappenedtostick.Iwould takecuisinesfromallovertheworldand makethemintotacos.Thefirstround wasaBrazilianchurrasco.Iwouldalso doavegetarianoption.Istartedexperimentingwithsmokedwatermelonand cauliflowerandstufflikethat.Itbecame anadventureincookingvegetarian Italsodependedonthetimeofyear. AtJazzFest,eventhoughwedidn’t haveonethatyear,Iwouldtakecrawfishbreadanddeconstructthatintoa taco.InOctober,Iwoulddoachopped brattacowithapeachschnappssalsa.
