Thegoalisn’tjusttoexplainhowa businessworks,saystheinstitute’s CommunityProgramManagerJalen Carter,butrathertohelpstudents developtheirideasintoactualbusinesses.Theprogramisabout“starting kidsthinkingaboutentrepreneurship asacareerpathandnotjustajob,” Cartersays
Theacademyiscurrentlyinitsfirst yearandhas318thto12thgradersfrom 15schoolsacrossthecity,withaparticularfocusonreachingoftenunderserved communities,particularlyBlackyouth andyoungwomen.
TheTulaneacademyisbasedon a2004programattheUniversity ofRochester.Followingitssuccess, universitiesandcollegesacrossthe countryhavebegunopeningtheir ownacademies.
Theextracurricularprogramisbroken upintoseveralsegmentswhichtrack thetypicaldevelopmentcycleofsmall businesses.First,studentscomeupwith andfleshouttheirindividualideaswhile alsolearningthefundamentalsofcreatingtheirownbusiness,whatCartercalls “Entrepreneurship101.”
Studentsthenworkingroupstoflesh outtheirbusinessideas.Forinstance, thisyear’sgroupofstudentideasruns thegamutfrom“teenhydration”and nutritionbusinessestothecreationofa marketingfirmforteens.Thereareeven pitchesbeingdevelopedaroundcreating
apetambulanceserviceandacompany thatwoulddesignmoreefficientand comfortableprosthetics.
Duringtheirweeklyclasses,students willlearnfromtheacademy’sinstructorsaswellasavarietyoflocalexperts, includingCEOs,taxadvisors,accountants,e-commerceexperts,mediaand publicrelationsprofessionalsandothers Therearealso12entrepreneurs workingasmentorsforthestudentswho advisethemonthedevelopmentoftheir pitches.Studentswillalsoparticipatein an“elevatorpitch”competitiontohelp honetheirskillsatattractinginvestors. Additionally,studentsaregettinga lookathowtheideasthey’relearningare putintopracticethroughmeetingswith businessownersinthecity.Thisyear’s
classrecentlytookatouroftheDew DropInnledbyownerCurtisDoucette Jr Theywillalsomeetwithmembersof theChasefamily
Thefinal10weeksoftheprogramwill bededicatedtotakingthelessonsthe studentshavelearnedtoputtogether formalpitchesforatradeshowtheacademyisputtingonMay4attheClaiborne InnovationDistrict.Studentswillreceive between$700and$1,000eachinseed moneytothenlaunchtheirbusiness
