2023's Noteworthy New Orleanians
Despite the weather, I hope everyone’s summer has been delightful! As we get back into the swing of things, I’m looking forward to a fun season of events, football games (Ole Miss vs. Tulane, anyone?), and cooler temperatures… eventually. I’m also really excited about Adore’s upcoming issues which promise unique features and plenty of shopping.
The Adore team has been hard at work this summer, and we are pleased to present you with our annual A-List Issue. The 15 noteworthy New Orleanians featured are nothing short of amazing, and each person has contributed to the city’s growth and success. It was a pleasure getting to work with these high achievers over the last few months, and I’m sure you’ll learn something new while reading their interviews.
We love keeping up with our past A-Listers personally and professionally. In this issue, you’ll find Aulston Taylor (A-List 2021) and Sevetri Wilson’s glamorous nuptials (prepare to be wowed!) alongside Curry, the adorable Maltipoo belonging to Penny Francis (A-List 2021), in Shop Dog. Two fun shopping stories feature entirely local finds, and dinner party inspiration awaits in our preview of Michael Harold and Quinn Peeper’s new book Classical Shindig. Be sure to stop by their book signing at the Garden District Book Shop on Tuesday, September 12. As always, thank you for supporting Adore. We look forward to seeing you out and about this season!
- MICHAELA BECHLERJoin me on Thursday, September 14 at this year’s WYES Gala! Funds raised will sustain and grow the station’s programming and community outreach as well as their mission of preserving the stories of the region for over 66 years. Music by the Party Starters 504 Band, an incredible auction, and cuisine by The Windsor Court catering await! Tickets are currently available online. wyes.org
Evolve Coffee + Matcha opened its second location in July, and it’s become a staple for me when I’m shopping or running errands in the area. The Evolution is a delicious combination of matcha and espresso, and The Rose Matcha Latte (pictured) is the perfect refreshment on a hot afternoon. The new location also has ample space for working, studying, or gathering with friends!

Over the past five years, the A-List issue has become one of Adore’s most popular and shared editions — and for good reason! It’s always an impressive roster of New Orleanians speaking about their work alongside fun, personal tidbits. The portraits by Chris Granger are also a staple, and this year’s photos are absolutely stunning. This time around, our team decided to focus on 15 residents who love the city and are dedicated to improving it professionally, charitably, and socially. Their industries
and goals are as diverse as their go-to restaurants, interesting hobbies, and podcast recommendations, and their favorite parts about New Orleans serve as a great reminder of why the city is so treasured and beloved. In its fifth iteration, we also wanted to showcase two groups: the four co-founders of Salon22 and the partners behind Bacchanal and The Elysian Bar. As always, it was a delight to get to know each A-Lister through their words, and we look forward to watching these noteworthy individuals shine on.

I love providing a space for diverse women to connect personally and professionally. These connections will ultimately help us impact the community of New Orleans. WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? Two years ago, I took a leap of faith and left the classroom after almost two decades of teaching in New Orleans. Change is uncomfortable and scary, and I am so proud of myself for being courageous and stepping into the discomfort to make the pivot. I was blessed to have one career that I adored teaching children, and I am so excited for this new journey that embraces my passion for women empowerment. WHAT ABOUT NEW ORLEANS INSPIRES YOU? Seven years ago, my husband’s job was taking us back to Baltimore, but as a family we chose to stay. There is happiness here that is contagious. It’s very easy to feel the love if you give it. WHAT IS YOUR VISION OF FUTURE NEW ORLEANS? An elevation of the status of women — it's not hard to find a headline that says Louisiana is the worst place for women to live in the country. Increasing economic security for women means correcting the significant gender wage gap, increasing the minimum wage from the lowest in the country to a living wage, and offering family paid leave so women don’t have to quit their jobs at times of need. SOMETHING ABOUT NEW ORLEANS THAT PUTS YOU IN A GOOD MOOD Bounce music reminds me that nothing is so serious that a good twerk can’t fix! WHAT IS YOUR VISION OF FUTURE NEW ORLEANS? I would like to see more civic collaboration between the city and its storytellers to address some of the most pressing issues. Hosting is an art, and after flipping through Michael Harold and Quinn Peeper’s new coffee table book, it’s clear that the couple has mastered it. Classical Shindig: Amateur Artistry from the Simple to the Sublime offers a taste of the parties the New Orleanians are known for and post about on their popular joint Instagram page, @classicalshindig. Anecdotes, recipes, illustrations, and hundreds of photographs from fêtes over the years sprinkle the pages, and the joy that Michael and Quinn take in hosting exudes on each one.
Michael Harold (left) and Quinn Peeper (right)“All of our meals are at the table because I hate anyone walking around my house with food or drinks. I have a weakness for textiles, and I’ve never had to reupholster anything because of an accident.”
Michael, an attorney, and Quinn, an obstetrician-gynecologist, got their first glimpse of hosting as children by watching their mothers and grandmothers. Quinn was expected to set the table from a young age, and Michael attempted cooking meals in his college dorm. “Eventually, it led to more experimentation in a kitchen and the acquiring of china and glassware,” they share. “The day that we closed on our first home, we threw an open house and served food on moving company boxes. And since then, it’s been nonstop entertaining.”
The duo’s early roles shaped their current party prep responsibilities: Michael focuses on the menu, cooking, catering, and beverages, while Quinn handles the china, crystal, silver,
When
glassware, linens, and flowers. “From the moment we schedule it, we are thinking of the menu and table settings. The actual setting of the table is done a few days in advance in case there’s a medical emergency. If there is an emergency, the party can proceed.”
Parties can take many forms, but some of their favorites have been themed soirées. Whether it’s a gorgeous Mardi Gras spread, commemorating the birthday of an author or composer, or going over the top for book club, there is clearly always a reason to celebrate.
Classical Shindig, published by Susan Schadt Press and designed by Doug Turshen, was conceived after a party, of course. In 2018, after playing the piano with the Louisiana Philharmonic
Choosing the parties proved to be difficult, especially with the thousands of professionally taken photos Quinn and Michael had in their possession.
hosting al fresco in warmer weather, the couple suggests renting massive fans to cool guests and keep bugs away.
Orchestra in a benefit concert for the EnglishSpeaking Union, the couple hosted a creative reception which was covered by Adore. “After the excitement of the concert, ‘postpartum depression’ kicked in (Quinn is a published researcher on this subject) so we developed the idea of the book together, writing chapters in earnest when Covid-19 forced us all into quarantine,” Michael shares. Many late nights and weekends were spent going over photographs from an event or party, and frequent Zoom meetings were held with Susan and Lauren Esthus to help narrow down hundreds of photos.
As the book frequently shows, Michael and Quinn’s most successful gatherings are the traditional sitdown dinners, alternating between plated, family style, or self-serve. They also like to separate couples and arrange guests, with the help of their Scully & Scully seating chart, to promote interesting conversation.
Many local shops and businesses are featured in the book, and Michael and Quinn also share their favorite places to source antiques, furnishings, flowers, invitations, and food. When hosting a shindig, they lean on The Wine Seller to rent glassware (no clean up required!); Martin Wine & Spirits for dips, cheese, and nibbles; Langenstein’s for a first course; and Breaux Mart for freshly squeezed orange juice (which they say make the best mimosas).
As classically trained pianists, music is also a part of the hosting equation. Beyond classical music, they enjoy playing anything by Jacques Loussier, Charlie Byrd, Cesária Évora, and old Bryan Ferry and Rod Stewart CDs.
Whether you have experienced Michael and Quinn’s phenomenal parties or simply enjoy a beautiful home with exquisite details, readers are in for a highly curated treat. Classical Shindig is available August 29th online and locally at the Garden District Book Shop with a signing set for Tuesday, September 12.

You can never have enough ice. Even with an ice maker, we buy three large bags for drinks and chilling wine and champagne.
2
We never serve food that requires having to do work in the kitchen while guests are around. We prefer to have them arrive at the dining room table with food ready to serve on plates.
3
Something always goes wrong. Just laugh it off because there is nothing you can do but improvise. The more stressed and nervous the host, the more uncomfortable the guest.
4
Place cards are generally good fun. They’re creative, colorful, and they keep you from having to tell people where to sit because guests invariably ask, “Where would you like us?”
5
If you got it, use it. If a relative decides to leave you some fine china or silver, then make sure to take it out of the cabinets once in a while and think of them when you eat with it.

BY JENNY PETERSON // PHOTOS BY IRIS MANNINGSFollowing an introduction at a private event connected to Jazz Fest in 2019, Sevetri Wilson and Aulston Taylor’s three-and-a-half-year courtship involved plenty of dining dates at favorite spots Morrow’s, Lil Dizzy’s, and Bearcat Café. After getting engaged on the sands of Positano, Italy in 2022, the Louisiana natives knew they wanted a large and unforgettable New Orleans celebration.
Anissa Coleman of Elegance by ACE brought their vision to life in just six months. “Every detail was expertly curated so the couple and their guests could take in the moment,” she shares. “Sevetri and Aulston’s love story will be etched in every guest's memory forever.”
St. Louis Cathedral served as the ceremony location, accompanied by gospel music from New Orleans female group Jessica Harvey and the Difference. Sevetri’s Baptist pastor performed the sermon, and Aulston’s Catholic priest married the couple. As they exited the cathedral, the St. Augustine Marching 100 greeted their CEO and his new bride with two songs: “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)” by Kate Bush and “Welcome 2 tha Nolia” by Juvenile. Guests were asked to dress entirely in black to the afternoon and all-night fête which included a flower-filled tented reception in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden.“Elegant and classic was our wedding vibe, and our guests embraced it,” the couple says.

Tantawan Bloom and Bella Blooms.Sevetri wore a custom Galia Lahav trumpet silhouette gown featuring a delicate lace floral appliqué on a sheer corset and a cape and veil, both with long trains. Her transparent pointed-toe shoes were by Amina Muaddi, and her accessories were by BeJe Designs. Aulston gifted Sevetri her “something blue”— small keepsake photos of her mom, dad, and grandmother that served as memorial charms in her wedding bouquet. The groom wore a Tom Ford navy blue double-breasted suit, shoes, and bowtie with a vest by Ermenegildo Zegna. Aulston gifted each of his groomsmen a bowtie to match.
Cocktail hour took place in the New Orleans Museum of Art’s Great Hall with specialty drinks and music by saxophonist Brad Walker and harpist Cassie Watson. The seated garden reception featured braised short ribs and seasonal Gulf fish, followed by the almond cake with buttercream filling from the Royal Cakery. Music by Elle Varner and Universal Language completed the party. An epic afterparty, which included an outfit change for Sevetri, lasted until midnight with performances by rapper Juvenile and Partners-n-Crime with the couple’s names projected onto the wall. Guests enjoyed watching Aulston and his best man recite the songs (perhaps even better than the selected artists) with champagne bottles in hand.
"The wedding planning process was a whirlwind that moved at a fast pace. When the couple presented their plan for their wedding, I knew it was going to be an experience of the lifetime...not one detail was left untouched."
ANISSA COLEMANThe bridesmaids wore silk champagne gowns, and the groomsmen wore custom Crown of Wealth tuxedos. Sevetri slipped into a sleek getaway gown at the after party while Aulston swapped his bowtie for a striped tie.
Found in Uptown New Orleans, Eclectic Home is a design firm filled with a diverse range of carefully curated home décor pieces sourced from all over the world. Throughout her life, owner and principal Penny Francis has always gravitated towards furnishings and adding style to a space. “As young as six years old, I was obsessed with old films, not for their stories but for the set design. I was always re-arranging something either at my grandmother’s house or at home,” Penny shares. “I started refinishing furniture at 13 and was always obsessed with many periods and styles of furniture. Hence, Eclectic Home was the perfect name for the business.”
The interior experts at Eclectic Home can help execute any home project, and the newest addition to the team is Penny’s loveable pup, Curry. Penny shares that Curry is a timely, earnest employee who enjoys the car trips to and from work. “He knows my morning routine and just as I get up from my dressing table and grab my keys, he jumps into his bag, knowing we are about to leave.” Once he arrives,
the Maltipoo gets down to business by greeting customers and receiving belly rubs from his fellow staff members. “He is great at relieving stress and has a calming effect on everyone. He makes us smile.”
Curry is a huge fan of the store’s rugs, as well as The Golden State Warriors, getting his namesake from the team’s point guard, Steph Curry. Besides watching basketball games, Curry also loves to stroll around Audubon Park, as well as lounge around indoors — which is perfect for training his eye for design.
When it comes to the design process, Eclectic Home is different from other firms. “There are no rules to follow, we showcase what we love and have something for every taste level. From vintage to bespoke, mid-century to French; we pride ourselves in inspiring customers and clients to be different...there is always something unexpected.”
