Spring has officially sprung — in more ways than one. The city is buzzing with visitors for vacation and festivals, the heat has started to make an appearance, and my calendar feels extra full this year with lively events around town. At a recent Louisiana Landmarks Society event, members and guests enjoyed a breezy evening on the bayou at the Pitot House. I love when events are set against a historic backdrop almost as much as I love the creative restorations and renovations Adore covers. René Fransen, the society’s president and a renowned landscape architect, designed the stunning pool and terrace we featured in this edition. Working with the owners to create an outdoor oasis, Jeffrey and Lesley Jane Seymour (and Leo, pictured above) have adopted have adopted an al fresco style of living that is straight out of White Lotus — sans drama.
The rest of this issue shares the same sentiment. Enjoy a menu curated for your next porch dining experience and all of the hosting essentials you need for a backyard soirée. Learn more about local designer Sue Sartor and browse beautiful garden-inspired looks that should be sported all season. Mother’s Day and graduation festivities are fast approaching – we’ve got you covered with our gift guides featuring all local finds. As always, thank you for being a reader and supporting Adore!

FOUND Paradise
BY MICHAELA BECHLER PHOTOS BY LAURA STEFFAN
After 40 busy years in New York, Lesley Jane Seymour, the founder of CoveyClub, and her husband Jeffrey, a former Wall Street executive, were ready for their next adventure. While New Orleans had been on their radar for years, the empty nesters considered many other cities around the world before finding the perfect home on Royal Street. Built around 1880 by Alexander Brewster and most recently renovated and designed by Leland vanDeventer, the home was turnkey in every way, except for the backyard. The large space was simple but had depth and oozed potential. “I knew that if we were coming here full time, I’d have to have a pool because of the heat,” Lesley said. “We had renovated interiors before but never an outdoor area and certainly never put in a pool. Leland had told us that the only person to do the pool right for this house would be René Fransen.”

“I like to say I asked René for a pool, but he gave me the Four Seasons.”

“The unique challenge of this property was its depth and mature trees in the inappropriate positions to accomplish the Seymour's wishes of a pool, outdoor shower, entertaining area, and not seeing or hearing the A/C units.”
RENÉ FRANSEN
After meeting René through mutual friends, the Seymours gave the landscape architect and founder of Fransen Mills their vision for a peaceful, private sanctuary with fragrant flowers, an outdoor shower, and not a single blade of grass. He delivered a fresh respite that feels both trendy and timeless and is brimming with flora. “In my planting designs, I have become famous for the color and textures of the green foliage of my plant materials,” René explained. “These in turn bloom throughout the year so something is always in bloom. Fragrance always plays a huge role in the plants selected.”
René is also known for designing custom pools that are influenced by the client’s wants and the allotted space. “This spa placement is unique and never seen in any of our other work. We wanted it close to the house and the central focus with planting beds to make it more intimate,” René said. The classically

detailed wall featuring Bevolo lanterns is as functional as it is pretty. Against the wall is a swim out seating area, created as an underwater “living room” with a view back to the house. Behind it lies hidden storage for pool equipment and toys, the A/C units, and a shower with frost-proof tile from Floor and Decor and a male holly hedge for additional privacy. “What’s really terrific is that when you enter the house now and look at the pool through the big guillotine window, your eye believes the house extends to the wall,” Lesley said. “It looks as if the house is two times its size.”
To complete the space, René encouraged the couple to extend their home living area with the creation of a raised terrace in white Egyptian stone. “Historically, raised New Orleans homes did not connect well to the exterior,” he explained. “Starting in 1987, I began to experiment with raising the level of terraces to that of the home in order to allow free movement from the main entertainment area. It is like having a covered porch added on but without the cover. It took a lot of my salesmanship to convince them that it would be the best money they were going to spend.”
“We didn’t know René, but our friends did. I heard he was very busy — the top guy in the Quarter — and when I found out he did all of these gorgeous multi-million dollar properties around the world, I knew I’d have to let him know we would be good clients.”

The Seymours’ cats — Leo (pictured), Rain, and Zeus — spend ample time outdoors. “Leo’s favorite part of the yard is behind the trees when it gets hot, and he hunts brown lizards with Rain. Zeus spends most of his time under the house: he’s the typical scaredy cat.”

Lesley and Jeffrey trusted his recommendation and are thrilled with the result. “We now throw open the doors and the patio becomes part of the house. I can’t imagine having to navigate stairs and bringing food and drinks up and down. Memo to self: listen to the experts when you hire them!”
Having a backyard oasis has completely changed how the couple eats, works, and entertains. “Post-Covid, we

only entertain outdoors, and we like to eat outside whenever possible. Each year, I have a huge 'Girls Swim' day with every fabulous woman I’ve met in New Orleans. I work out there during the hot weather and often take several dunks in the pool during each summer day.” The only drawback? It killed Lesley’s desire to travel. “When I traveled in the past, I was always looking for a fabulous pool or beach, great food, and things to do. With a pool like this in New Orleans, you’d have to look hard to find a better place.”
“When the kids visit, everyone piles in the pool. During the winter, it looks like a live work of art through the kitchen window that is calming and beautiful.”

the Savor OUTDOORS
Make your next al fresco meal unforgettable with these standout recipes — created by local chefs with the season’s heat and humidity in mind — that can be enjoyed all together or on their own.
MISTY DAY
This refreshing cocktail from the team at MaMou (942 N. Rampart Street) is best served in a coupe and enjoyed outside.
1 oz Calvados
½ oz St. George Spiced Pear Liqueur
1 oz Celery juice
¾ oz Lemon juice
¼ oz Simple syrup
8-10 dashes of Fee Foam
Combine ingredients in shaker tin, shake hard until chilled, and double strain directly into glass.
RED BEAN DIP
From Dickie Brennan’s Palace Café: The Flavor of New Orleans, this recipe is a crowd pleaser and a great start to any meal.
1 lb Dried red beans
2 tbsp Butter
8 oz Andouille sausage, chopped
1 cup Celery, chopped
1 ½ cups Onions, chopped
1 cup Green pepper, chopped
¼ cup Garlic, chopped
1 tsp Fresh thyme, chopped
2 Bay leaves
2 tbsp Creole seasoning
8 cups Water
“Calvados and celery juice are refreshing, bright, and so fun! Plus, its color makes it beautiful in any glass, but we serve it up in a coupe.”
Sort and rinse the dried beans. Combine the beans with enough water to cover in a large bowl and let stand for 8 hours or longer.
Melt the butter in a large saucepan and add the andouille. Cook until the andouille is light brown. Add the celery, onions, bell pepper, garlic, thyme, bay leaves, and Creole seasoning. Sauté until the vegetables are tender.
Drain the beans and add to the saucepan with 8 cups of water. Cook over medium-high heat for 1 hour or until the beans are tender, stirring occasionally.
Purée the mixture in batches in a food processor and return to the saucepan. Reduce the heat and simmer for 5 to 6 hours or until thick enough to dip with chips. Serve with potato chips.

RED CABBAGE SALAD
This easy, fresh salad from Shannon Bingham, Executive Chef of Brewery Saint X and Devil Moon BBQ (on the corner of Loyola Avenue and Girod Street), feeds four and is filled with bold flavors.
1 Head red cabbage, outer leaves and core removed
1 cup Coconut-Lime Vinaigrette (recipe included)
½ cup Spicy Peanuts (recipe included), plus more for garnish
½ cup Fried shallots, plus more for garnish
½ cup Lightly packed fresh mint leaves, torn or roughly chopped
½ cup Lightly packed fresh cilantro leaves, torn or roughly chopped
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Use a sharp knife or mandolin to slice the cabbage very thin.
Add the cabbage and all other ingredients to a large mixing bowl. Toss to combine and season with salt and pepper. Garnish with more spicy peanuts and onions if you’d like.
COCONUT-LIME VINAIGRETTE
MAKES 1 PINT
3 Limes
1 tsp Kosher salt
1 tsp White sugar
13.5 oz can Full-fat coconut milk
Zest and then juice the limes. In a blender, combine the lime juice, zest, salt, and sugar.
With the blender on low, slowly pour in the coconut milk until the dressing is emulsified.
Fried shallots are available at Asian markets (like Hong Kong Market or Golden City). You’ll make more peanuts than you need — they keep well for topping salads but are also great on ice cream.
MUSHROOM CAMPANELLE
Uptown’s newest Italian spot, Osteria Lupo (4609 Magazine Street), suggests beating the heat with this lighter vegetable-driven dish.
1 lb Fresh Campanelle pasta, or other fresh hollow center pasta
SPICY PEANUTS
MAKES 1¼ CUPS
1 cup Unsalted peanuts
½ cup White sugar
3 tbsp Water
1 tbsp Sambal
Zest of 1 lime
Kosher salt to taste
In a small saucepan, cook the peanuts, sugar, water, and sambal over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture turns dry and sandy. Continue to cook, watching carefully, until it reaches a deep amber color. Remove the pan from the heat. Stir in the lime zest and a big pinch of salt, then spread on a sheet pan in an even layer to cool.
1 tsp Fresh thyme, chopped
1 tsp Fresh oregano, chopped
1 tsp Fresh rosemary, chopped
½ tsp Crushed red pepper flake, to taste
4 oz Dry white wine
12 oz Chicken or vegetable stock
"There are a variety of beautiful wild mushrooms that come to market April to June, so we’re taking advantage of that. Campanelle, which translates to bellflower and is named for its distinct shape, is conical with fluted edges that make it perfect for holding on to the mushroom ragu.”
6 oz Porcini mushrooms
6 oz Shiitake mushroom
6 oz Oyster mushrooms
½ cup Shallot, minced
1 tbsp Garlic, minced
3 oz Heavy cream
Juice of ½ lemon, to taste
2 tbsp Chives, minced
2 oz Parmesan, to taste
Black pepper and sea salt, to taste
Bring a large pot of heavily salted water to boil. Heat a large, heavy bottom sauté pan over medium high heat; coat with olive oil. When the oil is hot and shimmering, add the mushrooms. You may want to work in a couple of batches.
Stir in the shallot, garlic, thyme, oregano, rosemary, and red pepper flakes to the mushrooms. Cook for several minutes until the shallots begin to soften and the garlic has mellowed. Add the white wine and allow it to reduce until nearly dry. Add the chicken stock and reduce by half. Add the cream and lower the heat to a gentle simmer.
Cook the pasta in the pot until a bit firmer than al dente. Fresh pasta cooks very quickly, and you’ll remove it from the water early so that it can finish cooking in the sauce.
Add a couple of ounces of pasta water to the mushroom pan. Toss the pasta in the mushroom ragu to evenly coat, cook for two minutes over very low heat to allow the flavors to combine. Squeeze the lemon half into the pasta, be sure to taste. Divide evenly among four bowls. Top with grated parmesan, minced chives, and a pinch of sea salt.

Around Flouncin’
While Sue Sartor, the founder and designer of her namesake clothing line, is originally from Massachusetts and New Jersey, she has easily called Louisiana home since attending Tulane University. “I think I must have Louisiana in my blood,” she laughs. “I never really went back up north.”
In November 2022, she opened a showroom storefront on Magazine Street, further cementing herself in New Orleans and offering clients a space to experience her colorful kaftans and tunics. From Satsuma Garden Print and Peony Silk Satin to Green Apple Marigold and Cornflower Souk, just reading the print names inspires one to forgo the air-conditioning and get outside. Unironically, these are the perfect dresses for the task — made from incredibly lightweight cotton, with block print hems and deep pockets. They answer the call, whether you’ve got a leisurely afternoon of training jasmine vines up a trellis or an all-out cocktail extravaganza to host. “I’d say Cape Cod and The Vineyard influence my style, yet it’s also botanicals and nature. The tropical plants down here and the pretty, sweetness of the South; I just love it.”
For the designer, creativity has always been a cornerstone in life. Sue began exploring art mediums in high school. At Tulane, she earned a double degree in Art History and Studio Art, moving immediately to Europe after graduation to study fashion further. In the early 90s, she took her first interviews with Chanel and Calvin Klein. “In those years, New York was such an inspiring place to be for fashion. I chose Calvin, and I worked in visual merchandising and was a showroom girl. I helped dress models for shows and eventually went on the road with the brand, working in the D.C. area. I think I knew, even back then, that I always wanted a line of my own.”
BY JENNY ADAMS PHOTOS BY ERIN BOWMAN
Marrying her sweetheart from her days at Tulane, she relocated to Lake Charles, then Monroe. During these years, she jumped into raising a family and painted on the side. In 2015, she partnered with friend Anu Lal to launch that long dreamed-of clothing line called Sue Anu. The dresses were an instant success in Monroe. Breezy, light, and built for heat and movement, the designs spoke not only to feminine style, but also to functionality. Online sales were flourishing, and pop-up events were profitable, but a few years after the launch, Anu felt a pull to explore other paths. Sue relaunched with her own name and a cornerstone piece called The Flounce Dress.
I knew immediately that this dress was the hero of the brand.

“I knew immediately that this dress was the hero of the brand,” says the designer, who now splits time between New Orleans and Monroe. Trademarked, the dress is based upon a kaftan styling, with a balloon sleeve. Touches like placket detailing, delicate piping, and a two-side sash give it structure and polish. Piped out of luxurious Indian cotton, it pairs with sneakers as easily as a pump. As the line expanded, the silhouette became the basis for the rest of the styles.
“I marketed my pieces to the interior designers here in New Orleans,” she recalls. “All of these people were redoing their homes, and designers needed something chic but comfortable. You can throw one of these dresses on with a ballcap and get to work, but you can also have a business meeting in it. The house dress had a real moment during Covid. People still wanted beauty around them, but they were at home, working in the garden or on a Zoom call. We were uniquely positioned for that.”
Luckily, she also placed a huge order from India just before lockdown. “The re-orders definitely took longer, and we had supply chain issues like anyone else,” says Sue, who finally traveled to India in February 2023, to meet with her production teams. “I have a husband-and-wife team who head up my Delhi workroom and three block-printing operations in Jaipur. I got to be hands-on developing the blocks and making more proprietary patterns. It’s an ancient, artisan practice. It’s very thoughtful.”

From left: Cameron in Fairfield Maxi Dress ($495) and Ashley in Tie Back Sundress ($295)
Sue’s friends would also likely describe her as thoughtful, as would the thousands of women she’s dressed. “We believe that fashion is for everyone. At our showroom, you’ll find XS to XL, but in our Anthropologie line, we offer petites to plus sizes, all the way up to XXXL. You don’t need an appointment for a custom fitting. All of our staff are well-versed in the entire ordering process.”
For Sue, a dress isn’t merely a functional item, but an artistic expression. It’s an expression of the block printers, handing down patterns through generations. It’s also one of the tailors sewing each piped stitch. And, of the women who put the pieces on, whether they choose the Palladio Kaftan in the peach-hued, Satsuma print or the more formal Fairfield style, with an amethyst-peony print, in organza. A playful moment in menswear arrives this summer with the launch of her new cabana shirts. A hybrid between a guayabera and a bowling shirt, they will feature the brand’s signature style details.
While she says a focus on the new storefront is the main goal for 2023, you just never know what Sue will get up to next. “When I got off the plane at 18 years old, New Orleans spoke to me immediately,” she muses. “The smell of the sweet olive in the air, the way the lush tropical plants thrive — visual inspiration around you all the time here. I love the celebration of creativity, and it keeps me constantly energized.”

New Orleans native Sabrina Roussel and New Yorker Adam Zabinsky met as co-workers at a consulting firm in Los Angeles, but it took one year from that initial meeting to the first date. They spent the next year falling in love and made an international move to Dublin when Sabrina was offered a job transfer. After dating for three years, Adam proposed to Sabrina the day after Christmas (also known as St. Stephen’s Day in Ireland) with a stunning pear-shaped diamond ring flanked with green sapphires in front of a lighthouse on Dublin Bay. “The bike ride back from the lighthouse was pure joy; we just couldn’t stop smiling and shouting,” Adam said.
The couple, who now call Lisbon, Portugal home, knew they wanted to plan their wedding in Sabrina’s hometown with an intimate gathering of friends, a Jewish ceremony with a chuppah to honor Adam’s family, and Filipino-inspired touches to honor Sabrina’s heritage. They found a perfect quaintness and intimacy at Mosquito Supper Club, a bespoke sustainable seafood restaurant on Dryades Street. The ceremony was held on the front porch followed by a Cajun family-style dinner inside and dancing in the backyard. “We originally reached out to Mosquito Supper Club to inquire about a rehearsal dinner,” Sabrina said. “Their food and mission felt very special to us.”
Sabrina chose a Markarian column gown with a square neckline, back slit, and white floral brocade for the celebration. She accessorized with earrings from Unbridaled
The couple got ready at Ace Hotel New Orleans, where many of their guests stayed, and enjoyed a pre-ceremony drink together at the bar.

“As soon as we knew we would have the ceremony on the front porch, we knew we wanted a group photo of all our guests — it’s very cute and old-timey and my favorite photo of the day.”

on Magazine Street and a bracelet Adam’s mother gave her the morning of the wedding. Adam waited until the big day to reveal his custom green suit from Alphaiate and handmade brown leather shoes from Sapataria do Carmo, both designers based in Lisbon. A pocket square and socks were purchased from Jeff’s Haberdashery in New Orleans.
Rabbi Katie Bauman with Touro Synagogue performed the ceremony. The couple walked down the aisle together towards their parents, who were each holding up a corner of a bamboo chuppah, a Jewish tradition that represents a home. Sabrina and Adam read their own vows and family members read blessings. Guests then enjoyed a two-hour dinner of sweet potato biscuits, raw oysters, fried flounder, pickled shrimp, oyster soup, and duck confit as well as two specialty cocktails. “The food was so good, one of the guests broke kosher for the first time in their life to eat it,” Adam said. After dinner, Noah Young Trio, a suggestion of the bride’s sister after seeing the band at Bacchanal Wine, entertained guests in the backyard. As evening temperatures cooled, Andrea Mock Events was ready with heaters and wool blankets. “Considering we picked the venue without having ever visited, the music without ever hearing it and we didn’t rehearse any part of the ceremony, it all came together so perfectly,” Sabrina said.

Searching for a one-stop shop for locally made art and jewelry? The Marigny boutique C’Mere is a place where people can “come here” to pick up a gift, a new home décor piece, or treat themselves to something special. Creative founder and owner Remy Diamond opened the storefront in December 2019 after having success selling her work at various art markets around New Orleans. “My favorite part about C’Mere is getting the opportunity to promote local artists that inspire me. I learned so much working in the art markets around town and met so many amazing artists that inspired me to open this space.”
The shop is filled with eclectic designs from local artists, vintage clothes, as well as her own handmade tiny food jewelry. Charcuterie board earrings, birthday cake bracelets, and croissant rings are just a few of the snack-inspired designs that
can add a flavorful statement to any outfit.
Besides browsing the unique creations, patrons can also say hello to Remy’s beloved dog, Alita. The friendly Rat Terrier stays busy at C’Mere, assuming the role of security guard, greeter, and emotional support professional.
“She takes her job pretty seriously,” Remy shares. “She’s a reliable, consistent nap taker on the couch at C’Mere, and she would never intentionally miss a day.”
Her favorite part of the job is getting to socialize with guests or fellow furry friends that pop in to visit. “She also really likes when children come in and have any kind of snack left that she can lick off their face [and] hands.” After a long day of being the shop’s smallest team member, Alita loves to veg out by either sunbathing on the store’s welcome mat or cozying up under an array of pillows and blankets.
