Summer, even in New Orleans, is my favorite season. This year, I’m looking forward to visiting family and friends around the country, celebrating my birthday, frequenting sno-ball stands, and tackling my annual bucket list. Most summers, since I was in high school, I’ve made a list of activities and tasks that I wanted to accomplish. It was easier when I had time off from school, of course, but there’s something about this season that energizes me and encourages me to be active, productive, and adventurous in my down time. Our team is taking the same approach with Adore, and we’re excited to plan our fall content during the slower summer months — don’t worry, we’ll be back in print in August! In the meantime, keep up with us on NolaAdore.com and social media.
We hope that this issue also inspires you to make the most of your summer. In “Things We Adore,” we feature dining specials, events, and recommendations on everything from rosé to books. Learn more about Julia DeLois, a nightlife producer bringing locals together through creative programming; a secret supper club started by Chef Jason Goodenough (formerly Carrollton Market); and where to spend your vacation days in New Orleans and beyond. If you aren’t traveling, transport yourself to Palm Springs or Palm Beach with our guide to all things pink and green, and don’t forget to pick up a gift for Father’s Day! We hope you enjoy this summer edition — thank you for being an Adore reader!

THINGS Adore We S UMMER GUIDE
FAVORITE PART ABOUT WHAT YOU DO
It's been so refreshing to meet new people and to see genuine connections being made at my events.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?
Fun and frivolity! And connection. I'm a huge introvert and I would almost always rather stay at home with a book, which sounds counterintuitive for a nightlife producer, but it's actually a really helpful yardstick. I can't ask for people's time, money, and attention unless I'm creating something I would turn off the TV and leave my house for.
WHY NEW ORLEANS?
A NEWEra
BY MICHAELA BECHLER PHOTOS BY SOPHIA GERMER
While New Orleans has always been a city known for gathering and celebrating, there’s been a clear uptick in immersive events post-pandemic. “People want to have experiences right now, which makes it a phenomenal time to be doing events,” says Julia DeLois, a nightlife producer, comedian, and actress. “Every venue — from an upscale hotel to a dive bar — should be getting creative with their programming, and I love dreaming up event ideas that are a fit for each unique space.” Some of these events include Taylor Swift dance parties — perfect for fans who didn’t score coveted tour tickets — and What Now?, her recurring variety show created with her best friend Emily Slazer. With 14 years of New Orleans living under her belt, Julia knows how to make the most of her summers: roller skating; hanging out at bars, pools, and hotels; writing new material; and bringing together residents who are looking for fun and connection.
I've struggled with depression most of my life, and if you have to have depression, New Orleans is a pretty damn good place to do it. What's helped me most as I've gotten older (besides therapy and medication!) has been learning to be kinder to and more patient with myself and going out of my way to do the things I know make me feel good. The music, the food, the pace of life, the life-affirming connections — New Orleans is a place where it's easy to be nice to yourself. It's harder to sink into despair when you're experiencing pure rapture on a weekly basis. Creatively, it's easier and more fun to make things happen in New Orleans than a lot of other places. There's a spirit of generosity and collaboration among artists more than one of competition.
FAVORITE TAYLOR SWIFT ERA
How can I choose among my precious children?! I will say, 2023 is my Speak Now era. To me it means I'm aiming for some fairytale magic, some enchantment, some confetti moments celebrating personal accomplishments — but I'm also summoning a bit more of an attitude, even a little pettiness. I'm not so green anymore, I know what I have to offer, and I'm braver at speaking up for myself and what I want.
ULTIMATE TAYLOR SWIFT PUMP-UP SONG
I could defend in a court of law that "Cruel Summer" is the best Taylor Swift song. You can't listen to that bridge and not be hyped!

Stand-up paddleboarding, often a vacation activity, can be one of your new summer hobbies thanks to NOLA Paddleboards. The fun takes place on Lake Pontchartrain — which is tested weekly for anyone who is hesitant — and is open to first timers ages 9 and older. “We have been stand up paddling for over 15 years and teaching for 12 years, so we have plenty of tricks to help newbies stand up on the water and thoroughly enjoy their first experience,” says founder Jeff Lakey. Now through October, safely enjoy the unobstructed views of the lake in a small group, while getting in a full body workout that is pleasant at any pace. “I enjoy paddling on the lake because it ties two of my passions together: being able to easily get out on the water while living in a city with so much culture. I have lived in quite a few other coastal cities and that combination is hard to find.”

S HED O RGANIZING TIPS
BY JENNY PETERSON
Organizing your shed can be an intimidating task, with everything from oft-dirty gardening tools to decorations to varied and oddly-shaped lawn care items. It's also important to organize your shed before it gets too hot in New Orleans. As we know, the summer months can be brutal, making it difficult to work in an unorganized and cluttered space. Get the job done when the weather is still comfortable and you'll thank yourself later when you have a clean and organized shed to work in all summer long. Below are a few ideas for how to keep your outdoor storage area tidy and clutter-free, from expert organizer Victoria Tran, founder of Sorted NOLA.
CREATE ZONES
Separate your items by category — such as lawn and garden tools, regular tools, outdoor tailgating supplies, and decorations — and designate a place for just those items.
GO VERTICAL
Maximize space by utilizing the walls and the back of the door of the shed with open shelves and hooks to hang rakes, shovels, and even bicycles.
ROLL WITH IT
Adding a rolling cart to contain like items, such as pots and soil, can keep everything organized and tidy.
MAGNETS ATTRACT
Hang a magnetic tool holder strip to give you easy-to-grab access to hammers, screwdrivers, and more.
LOVE THE LABELS
Make finding less-used items a breeze by putting labels on bins as well as a companion checklist of the contents of the bin that you can reference later without having to guess.
KEEP IT CLEAN
With high heat and humidity, your shed can quickly become a breeding ground for mold and mildew. To prevent this, make sure to keep your shed clean and dry. Sweep the floors regularly and use a dehumidifier if necessary.
CREATE A MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
A shed can quickly become cluttered and disorganized if not maintained properly. A maintenance schedule for your shed can include regular cleaning, checking for any damages, and reorganizing as necessary.
HURRICANE PREPARATION
When organizing your shed, make sure to prioritize the storage of essential items like emergency supplies in a designated, easily-accessible location. This ensures that you can quickly locate them when needed.

New Orleans-based rock 'n' roll band The Revivalists will release their fifth album, Pour It Out Into The Night, on June 2, their newest album in five years. Its lead single "Kid" is a hopeful self-affirming anthem about capturing the essence of life, self-belief, and “living for the spirit” featuring a chantable chorus and a swelling melody. Written by vocalist/guitarist David Shaw and guitarist Zack Feinberg, “Kid” has already climbed to #1 on the Billboard Adult Alternative Chart. The album was written during the pandemic and celebrates living in the moment, unburdening yourself, and living for who you are and the things you care about. Secretly
DELICIOUS
BY JENNY ADAMS
New Orleans chef Jason Goodenough (ironically) never does anything subpar, whether it’s plating a lamb chop or hosting a party. It’s not surprising that his new venture since closing his beloved restaurant Carrollton Market is an ultra-popular, somewhat secret, supper club. “The first one sold out in 20 seconds,” he laughs. “The second within two minutes.”
His namesake Goodenough Supper Club favors a bit of mystery. His themed dinners are announced on Instagram with roughly 30 tickets sold for each, and details of the secret location are emailed just 24 hours prior. I arrived on a warm April evening at the first dinner, at an address in Faubourg Livaudais. A white Victorian mansion boasted a gorgeous, wrap-around front porch and stained-glass windows. Inside, a cello player in a suit worked his magic on a carved staircase. Flickering candlelight and white tablecloths gave off a wedding vibe, but there was a frenzy afoot, as Chef Goodenough’s team of “culinary mercenaries,” borrowed from multiple restaurants around town, poured the start of the paired libations.
The first theme was “Mom,” an homage to the passing of his own. Showcasing her favorite recipes with twists, a palate opener was first — Cajun Caviar atop a potato blini, with crème fraiche and pickled shallot. Then, Lamb Tartare, a symphony to match the orchestral music, with ratatouille and basil emulsion. My group sat back, joking about a mutiny on the kitchen for more. Oyster stew, with fennel, leek, and a delicate oyster-vermouth velouté was third, before an ultra-tender slice of chicken in a tarragon cream. However, it was the Braised Short Rib that felt most maternal, featuring his mother’s Christmas potatoes and red-wine jus.
Dinner party conversation flowed, and a few guests swapped numbers. I peeked in the Victorian’s kitchen and saw old friends elbowing each other, cheerful amongst the fire and steam of service. The Chocolate Lava Cake with Crème Anglaise was an ode to a recipe by Jean-George, but Goodenough also thanked everyone, in words and an endearing mom moment of to-go cookies. “I realized what I missed about restaurants was not only the creative process — getting to mess around with interesting
ingredients — but my customers. These supper clubs allow me to do both,” he says, noting that many present were former Carrollton Market regulars.
He’s since held “Palate Fatigue,” featuring flavors with bold spice and esoteric ingredients, and “Artsy,” plated at the Alex Beard Studio gallery space. “Each menu was handdecorated by the artist as a very cool, original, take-home art piece.”
Ticket prices range, depending on his expenses in furniture rentals and staff. At $175 for Mom, I left wonderfully full, with fresh friendships. One ticket that might be the hottest? “I plan to do one called ‘Carrollton Market,’” Goodenough says. “It will feature many of the restaurant's most adored dishes, including my signature Oysters Goodenough. I basically buried this dish when I closed. It will be resurrected.”
Want in on the secret, seriously delicious action this summer? Follow @goodenoughsupperclub on Instagram for dinner announcements. Tickets are posted at exploretock.com/the-new-culinarian-new-orleans once available.

NON-STOP F un
BY MISTY MILIOTO
Simply put, summers are meant for vacations. Even if that means a quick weekend trip, it’s important to make the most of beautiful weather, a bevy of festivals, and unsettled wanderlust. Here are five destinations that are easily accessible from New Orleans, thanks to non-stop flights straight from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY).
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
With several airlines offering nonstop flights from MSY to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), it’s an easy excuse to head to the Windy City. And if you’ve ever been to Chicago in the winter, you know that summer is the time to visit. In addition to gorgeous weather, Chicago offers several summertime festivals that can’t be missed. Taste of Chicago (which has its main food festival September 8-10 in Grant Park), is hosting neighborhood pop-ups this summer that include Humboldt Park (June 24), Pullman Park (July 15), and Marquette Park (August 5), each featuring free admission events with local food, live music, and more. Meanwhile, Lollapalooza returns to Chicago’s Grant Park (August 3-6) with nine stages and more than 170 bands from around the world. Headliners include Billie Eilish, Odessa, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Lana Del Rey. chicago.gov // lollapalooza.com
BENTONVILLE, ARKANSAS
Celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, Bentonville is home to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. The museum displays works of art from the colonial era to the present and is situated on 120 acres of native Ozark forest. The sprawling grounds include forest trails, sculpture gardens, and waterside pavilions. This summer, the museum is exhibiting Diego Rivera’s America (through July 31), and if you can’t make it until the fall, be sure to catch Who We Are: Portraits by Annie Leibovitz (September 16-January 29, 2024). While out and about in Bentonville, be sure to explore the historic Third Street District and its walkable downtown with an adorable city square. Breeze Airways provides nonstop flights from MSY to Northwest Arkansas National Airport (XNA).

NEW YORK, NEW YORK
It’s always a good idea to visit New York City, but especially so in the summertime. And with United Airlines, Delta Airlines, American Airlines, and JetBlue offering non-stop flights from MSY to John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), it’s never been easier to jet off to the Big Apple. This summer, in between delicious meals and sightseeing, be sure to check out Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty (through July 16 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art); The Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation (which recently opened at the American Museum of Natural History); and the African Fashion exhibition (June 23-October 22) at the Brooklyn Museum.

MONTRÉAL, QUÉBEC, CANADA
The largest city in Canada's Québec province, Montréal is set on an island in the Saint Lawrence River. Its boroughs, many of which were once independent cities, range from the cobblestoned French-colonial Vieux-Montréal (with the Gothic Revival Notre-Dame Basilica at its center) to the bohemian Plateau. During the summer, Montréal boasts beautiful, mild weather and plenty of festivals with a vibe similar to New Orleans. For example, the St-Ambroise Montréal Fringe Festival (May 29 to June 18) features more than 500 artists performing in 20-plus venues in the Plateau/Mont-Royal neighborhood. Meanwhile, Montréal Pride (August 3-13) is one of the city’s biggest annual parties. Air Canada offers four flights per week from MSY to Montréal–Trudeau International Airport (YUL).

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND
Like Washington, D.C., Baltimore is an exciting city with plenty to do — sans the large crowds. On June 24, the city is hosting the inaugural Summer Days Music Festival at the Pier Six Pavilion in downtown Baltimore. Grammywinning artists Lucky Daye and Muni Long will be among the acts at Inner Harbor. Meanwhile, Artscape — America’s largest free outdoor arts festival — returns on September 22-24. Expect visual art exhibitions, music performances, culinary treats, community gathering spaces, immersive family and youth experiences, and an artist marketplace. American Airlines, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines offer non-stop flights from MSY to the three airports in the greater Baltimore area. concerts.livenation.com // artscape.org

While Susan Swartz hadn’t been to New Orleans before, the acclaimed artist, activist, and documentary film producer knew it would be the perfect first stop for her pop-up series. “It was the first city that came to mind,” she said. “New Orleans checked all of the boxes: it’s pretty, it’s a beautiful time of year, and it has people involved in the environment, health, food, and education.”
From April 27 through May 20, an array of Susan’s paintings and vases were on view at Ten Nineteen, an art gallery founded in 2019 by Elizabeth Monaghan in the Lower Garden District. Curated by Jason McCoy Gallery in New York, visitors and residents were able to experience her vibrant artwork and her message of wellness in real time, without having to travel to New York or to her studios in Park City and Martha’s Vineyard. “Susan’s work is inspirational to me because I sense that the artist is drawing on her interior self; she is working from her gut,” Jason McCoy shared.
After a decade-long battle with mercury poisoning and Lyme disease, Susan completely changed her way of living, thinking, and eating. “I believe in the body healing itself,” she shared. “If you have a strong immune system, you really

have a balanced life. I’ve worked really hard to get where I am, and I don’t think there’s anything special but being really consistent.” In the process of healing, her work also evolved from realism to abstraction.
Through each piece, she aims to inform and educate about nature’s fragility as well as its healing power, and during the pandemic, she began to incorporate 3D elements like flowers, fruit, and vegetables into her work. “As a survivor of two life threatening environmental diseases, I had to take even better care of myself when Covid hit. While I was juicing and chopping up all of the vegetables, the thought came to me: why not mix them into the paints?”
These expressive works will now travel to different cities around the country that Susan and her team feel drawn to. To kick off the New Orleans pop-up, a public reception was held at Ten Nineteen on Thursday, April 27, followed by a dreamy private dinner for 40 in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden. Espirítmo, a Latin jazz trio, set the tone for the garden party. Staying true to Susan’s lifestyle and philosophies about food, Ralph Brennan’s Café NOMA created a healthy, farm-to-table inspired menu that was entirely gluten and dairy-free. Guests enjoyed each flavorful course from the Marinated Flank Steak over forbidden rice, baby carrots, and bok choy to the Peach and Mango Cobbler served with coconut ginger ice cream.

Taylor, The Montine McDaniel Freeman Director of NOMA; author Walter Isaacson; actor Doug Spearman; and Marcus Brown, an artist and sculpture teacher at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. During Susan’s visit to the Crescent City, Marcus invited her to give a lecture to his Level 3 students. (Susan is also a former high school art teacher.) In turn, Susan invited the class to create nature-inspired sculptures to be used as centerpieces for the dinner. They were accentuated by the elegant Petite Fleur by Lisa Brooking arrangements and table runners with Susan’s painting Evolution of Nature 26
Nature lovers are probably familiar with the “leave no trace” mentality, but Susan is leaving her first stop better than she found it: ten percent of all sales will support the Sculpture Garden.

“Susan wanted to give Marcus Brown’s students a platform for exposure and to highlight the important work NOCCA is doing with these incredibly talented young artists.”

Irish Channel DOUBLE GALLERY
BY MICHAELA BECHLER // PHOTOS BY LAURA STEFFAN
For a young couple looking to turn their Irish Channel new build into a home, Megan Evans delivered a fresh, sophisticated, and vivid scheme — all traits the Covington-based interior designer is known for. The clients found the townhouse-style space while it was still under construction, allowing them to make all finish selections from flooring to countertops. For furnishings and décor, they turned to Megan to dream up a house filled with color and pattern with a whimsical and quirky flair. “They really were dream clients from every aspect — not afraid to take risks and trusted me with some pretty bold moves,” she explains. “I don’t know many people who would give you a firm ‘yes’ about pink snake wallpaper!”
SET THE MOOD
The room started with the clients’ buffet which influenced the color scheme of the whimsical dining room. The Loloi rug brings the furniture, heavy curtains, and artwork by Jorge Alberto Aguilar Rojas together seamlessly.
COME ON IN
“The space called for a place to drop your mail and keys, but I didn’t want to use another cabinet or chest. It was also an odd size for a console table. The bar cart checked all the boxes, and can also be cleared off to function as a drink station for parties!”

Throughout the double gallery, Megan thoughtfully combined vintage pieces, custom creations, and furniture from tried-and-true brands, while also turning to Instagram storefronts like Lily’s Vintage Finds and Estately NOLA. A modern take on “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” awaits in the nursery while the dining room screams “moody dinner party.” The living room, kitchen, and entryway maintain a crisp bright energy, and of course, the serpent powder room is a delightful surprise. Even though each room is decidedly different, the designer carried pops of jewel tones over and kept major furnishings in a more neutral palate. “It helped create a bit of whimsy and sophistication. I wanted this home to feel elevated, but comfortable.” The final result is bold, playful, and dripping in color — ideal for a young family with a love of entertaining in New Orleans.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER
After working for 10 years in the luxury home furnishings and design industry, Megan Evans opened her own firm in 2019. With a longstanding love of architecture and textiles, the designer feels privileged to work in her clients’ homes and enjoys the abundance of charm that comes with each New Orleans house.

SWEET DREAMS
The primary bedroom features a custom bed outfitted in Matouk bedding, pillows created by Megan Evans Interiors, and vintage lamps found via Lily’s Vintage Finds. It’s safe to say this room is equal parts dreamy as it is chic.
BON APPÉTIT
The warm and modern kitchen is the perfect contrast to the moody dining room. World Market stools line the island, while a Jonathan Adler bowl makes a great centerpiece.
PRETTY IN PINK
From the Schumacher wallpaper to the custom pink vanity, this powder room truly packs a punch.

When they first met at age 15 in their hometown of Mandeville, Molly Stalter and Josh Nunez couldn’t have guessed they would become future husband and wife. Sparks first flew their sophomore year of college when Josh and Molly reconnected during Christmas break. They dated long-distance for the remainder of college before moving to New Orleans and getting engaged in 2022.
The couple envisioned a big New Orleans wedding that would bring together family and friends, who had already become close. Molly, the owner and designer of women’s lifestyle brand, Shop Molly Moran, wanted to tie in the signature bright colors found in her clothing designs. “Josh and I both have big personalities, and we wanted our wedding to reflect that,” she said. It was Josh, a software engineer, who suggested the Riverview Room as a reception venue, with large windows and balconies overlooking the Mississippi River and the French Quarter. “I loved having Josh be such an instrumental part of the planning.” The couple hired Iris and Oak Events to help with the planning and leaned on Lisa Smith from Petals n’ Parties to create pink and green tropical masterpieces, bringing Molly’s color-splashed vision to life.

The wedding day was picture perfect with beautiful weather in the high 70s. Molly and Josh tied the knot at the Basilica of St. Stephen Catholic church with a mix of siblings and friends by their sides. “Having our siblings up there with us on the most important day of our lives meant the world to us,” Molly said. “Our brothers are best friends and when we got our wedding pictures back, we noticed that they covered each other's eyes during our first kiss. It was so typical and now one of my favorite pictures.”
The bride wore an ivory silk fit-to-flare dress with a floral embroidered bodice and open back with button detailing purchased from Carriage House Weddings in Mountain Brook, Alabama. Josh donned an ivory tux from John's Tuxedos. The bridesmaids complemented Molly’s look with light pink dresses with floral appliques.
At the Riverview Room, guests danced the night away to Fountain City Players while dining on local favorites including an oyster bar and then noshed on late-night sliders and fries. Everyone signed Josh’s high school guitar, which the couple chalk painted. A second line led by Kinfolk Brass Band ushered guests to the after party at Pat O’Brien’s. The “after-after” party was held at Harrah’s Casino. “We wanted a big party and that is exactly what we got. The whole day was a dream.”

Shop Dog Ace
New Orleans local and artist Kristin Malone has always had a love for art and handcrafted products. While sharing her work with the local community, inspiration struck to open a storefront. “I was doing so many art markets and gaining like-minded friends who all had a passion to sell locally handmade goods,” Kristin shares. “I wanted a place that felt like an indoor art market that was accessible daily in-store and online.”
Home Malone opened its MidCity shop in November 2016, and after a few flourishing years, a second location was opened along Magazine Street in February 2019. The two locations are helmed by Kristin, carrying an array of products — home décor, food, and apparel — made by Southern artists and designers. “Our buying practices are unique in that we focus on items that aren't just designed in the South, but also made in the South. All of
our products have a story and are unique in some way.”
While visiting the Mid-City location to find the perfect gift or a new piece to spruce up your home, make sure to visit with Ace, Kristin’s goofy Goldendoodle and very focused store greeter. “Ace takes naps at home and is on full alert all day as a people greeter at work.” The pup loves to wait at the store’s entrance for an opportunity to socialize with customers, so factor in some time for belly rubs and back scratches before you check out.
When shopping, some notable items to keep a look out for are Louisiana-themed door hangers, locally made pottery, charming children’s books, and Lorraine Gendron folk art. If you’re searching for recommendations for your pup, Ace can point you in the direction of one of his favorite Home Malone products: homemade dog treats by Mutt Mama, baked locally.
