It’s hard to miss Paul Wilcox and Starr Hagenbring’s 19th-century Italianate house,

even if it is set back from the street. Its wisteria purple exterior projects a confident bloom year-round. Despite the house’s lively exterior, the house’s true personality is only revealed once visitors cross the threshold. “We’re maximalists, as you can tell,” Hagenbring says. Hagenbring and Wilcox are partners in both life and business. Their shop, Art & Eyes, is itself a temple to maximalism with rainbow-hued eyewear from a number of manufacturers and multi-patterned, hand-painted and handmade clothing by Hagenbring. Portraits of Harry Potter and Grace Jones, “iconic eye-cons” she calls them, adorn the store’s walls. The stars aligned in 2011 for the duo to move to New Orleans. Both had lived all over the U.S., but it was Hagenbring, an already-frequent visitor, who introduced Wilcox to the city during Jazz Fest.

ABOVE: The dining room is painted in cobalt blue and is also a temple to different religions: “We’ve got Catholicism, Buddhism, Judaism, we got sleeping Egpytians, we’ve got paganism,” says Starr about the statues, symbols and objects, which includes the spirit boxes she made. LEFT: Both Starr Hagenbring and Paul Wilcox realized they had both set their sights on the same home — despite searching for properties separately. “New Orleans is a city of neighborhoods and the urbanness is was what sealed the deal for me,” Hagenbring says.

In 2015, they realized they had become enamored with the same home in the Lower Garden District — despite coming across it in separate online searches. The two-story home was move-in ready, and the duo didn’t want to change any of the structural elements that made it special. It had already gone through a few permutations since it was built in the mid-1800s with the front two rooms added on in the late 1860s. The staircase is located in the middle of the current footprint. Hagenbring thinks this was once the main entrance for the house. Sometime in the 1940s or ‘50s, it had been turned it into an Arts and Crafts-style house — which was then reversed by the next owners, who sold it to Wilcox and Hagenbring. “When you buy an old house, you have a responsibility,” Hagenbring says. “I don’t know what people are thinking when they go to modernize it. Just go buy a new house.” They did update some elements to their liking: Hagenbring brought most of the interior’s white walls to Technicolor life highlighted by eclectic art, including works that depict spiritual deities and other objects that “all have special mean-

ing,” she says. She hand-painted most of the finishes, including the rhinoceros beetle outlined in gold paint on a cobalt blue background in the dining room. Hagenbring’s studio — a riot of fabrics bold in color and patterns — is located on the second floor. There, the couple is still fine-tuning some areas, such as the master bedroom, but there are still plenty of art and objets d’art throughout. It’s also where their three indoor cats nap in an open worktable drawer, which Hagenbring and Wilcox specifically designed for them to sleep in. “Every inch of space is used,” Hagenbring says. When the couple moved in, Hagenbring said it looked like “an old lady’s kitchen in Yonkers.” But she wanted to maintain some of the historic integrity, including its solid oak cabinets. The backsplash’s colors were used as part of the color scheme.

4 ways to help your

Personalized care is important for each plant, especially during the vulnerable summer months.

Courtyards, porches and entire yards in New Orleans can be difficult to

14

maintain when we’re facing triple-digit temperatures, heavy rains and a desire to lounge inside with the air conditioner. But landscape architect Beverly Katz says it’s important to double down and give them extra TLC during the next few months. “Your home’s exterior is like another room you design — an outdoor room,” says Katz, who has been in the industry for 25 years. Her company, Exterior Designs, Inc., specializes in outdoor spaces. The staff handles both design and construction. “For courtyards, the plant materials create the feel, with large leaves, colors and textures,” Katz says. “A Southern garden takes all conditions.” Here are some of her tips on how to keep gardens happy and healthy during the unrelenting summer months.

1

CORRECT POOR DRAINAGE

In order to have a successful

outdoor garden, drainage issues need to be addressed. Inspecting “drainage means (looking at) water all over the property, like if it puddles in the middle of the yard or the home’s downspouts are in the wrong place,” Katz

says. “There are problems that people have in their yards that you’ve got to correct before you even think about a garden.” Solutions can include raising certain areas where rainwater gets pooled. Some plants can take a little more moisture, like azaleas and ferns, she notes. “But you’re not going to want to plant anything that gets two to three inches of water.”

2

PERSONALIZE CARE FOR EACH PLANT

Katz says that every plant gen-

erally comes with instructions telling you whether it needs sun or shade, and she recommends following those guidelines when deciding where to place plants on your porch or in your garden. Most plants can tolerate the summer heat with regular watering, but it’s a good idea to move outdoor potted plants out of prolonged direct sun during the season’s hottest days.

3

CONSIDER AN IRRIGATION SYSTEM

Katz says outdoor plants and lawns

need water daily year-round, especially during the summer.

“If you don’t mind sitting outside in this heat and watering that’s fine, but the answer is some sort of irrigation. If you can’t afford the Rain Bird system, at least Home Depot or Lowe’s or hardware stores have some sort of a timer that you connect to your hose and a sprinkler,” Katz says. Despite the area’s near-daily summer rains, Katz said it’s not a reliable water source like daily irrigation. “You may have daily rains, but then you may have a dry spell for a month and everything’s dead. Watering inconsistently doesn’t work,” she says.

HOT

SUMMER

Tips

Watering lawns for 10-15 minutes daily is sufficient and gardens should be monitored to make sure they don’t dry out. Outdoor plants also need water daily.

GO BEYOND NATIVE PLANTS

Native Southern plants — camellias, azaleas, sweet olives and Indian Hawthorns — are great for a garden, but Katz says feel free to incorporate a mix of native plants with whatever plant strikes your fancy. “I don’t have gardens that have just native plants; that would be wild-looking,” she says. “Replenishing annuals is fun. You never get tired of your garden because you’re always changing the color of the annuals, and it’s always interesting to see what you’re going to plant and the colors each season.”
