The colorful Faubourg Marigny wasonceconsideredasuburbofNewOrleans, locateddownriverfromtheFrenchQuarterinaParisian-inspired“faubourg”named forJean-BernardXavierPhilippedeMarignydeMandeville,aFrench-Creolenobleman, developer,gamblingenthusiastandpoliticianinthe1800s.
FaubourgMarignywasearlyonthehomeofCreolefamilies,freepeopleofcolorand Europeanimmigrants.
Overthenextcouplecenturiesitwouldbecomeapopular,offbeatneighborhood foryoungerartists,musiciansandothercreativestothrive Especiallyoverthepast50 years,apushtopreservethearchitecturehasresultedinmanyoftheMarigny’shistoric buildingsbeingtouchedup,restoredorrepurposed.
Thesedays,it’snotunusualtospotfriendlycharactersonfootandonbikesinthis bustlingneighborhood Cottagesandshotgunhomeswerebuiltwithoutfrontyards, andthathaslongfosteredlivelysocialinteractionbetweenneighbors
Anumberofcornerstoresandneighborhoodbarshavebeeninoperationfor decades,thoughmanyhistoricvenueshavealsoundergonetransformations.
TheSt.RochMarket,forexample,wasconstructedin1875asadestinationforfood andproduce,butitwasredevelopedandhasbeenachef-centricfoodhallsince2014
AnothermorerecentstandoutprojectistheHotelPeterandPaul Formerlyahistoric church,schoolhouseandconvent,thebuildingsarenowpartofaboutiquehotelwith apopularbarandrestaurant.TheMarignyOperaHouse,meanwhile,isaneventspace andperformancehallintheformerHolyTrinityCatholicChurch
Therealsoareplentyofoutdoorattractions
WashingtonSquareParkdatesbacktotheneighborhood’sformation.It’snowa family-friendlyspotforpicnicsanddogwalks,andithasaplayground.
CrescentCityPark,whichopenedin2014,isalsoahotspotforoutdoorrecreation.The20-acreurbanparkofferssweepingviewsoftheMississippiRiver,bike paths,adogrun,pavilionsforrollerbladinganddancing,andarust-coloredrainbowbridgeentrance.ItexpandsintotheBywaterneighborhood.

Buttheareaisboomingyear-round,thanksto astretchofbarsandperformancespotsalong St ClaudeAvenuethathostlivelocalmusic, theater,burlesqueandmore.
MowgliPierlas,owneroftherestaurant ArabellaCasaDiPastaandaco-ownerof Kajun’sPub,bothonSt ClaudeAvenue,saysthe characteroftheneighborhoodiswhatinfluencedhisdecisiontoopenarestaurantthere almostadecadeago.

Healsoappreciatesthatlocalsaresosupportive.“Agood60%ofourbusinesscomesfromour neighborhoodregulars,”hesays.
A colorful history
Accordingtothecity’sHistoricDistrict LandmarksCommission,thelandforthe Marignywassubdividedfromaplantationand todayisboundedbytheMississippiRiverandSt ClaudeAvenueandbetweenEsplanadeAvenue andPressStreet.
TheFrenchnoblemanwassaidtohavetaken particulardelightinnamingitsstreets.While somestreetnameshavestayedthesame FrenchmenStreetandElysianFieldsAvenue, inparticular otherstreetsthatwerenamed Craps(reportedly,hehadanaffinityforgamblingandintroducedthisparticulargametothe city),Love,Victory,BagatelleandGoodChildren streetshavesincebeenrenamed.
Theareaenteredadeclineinthe1950s,as familiesbegantomoveouttothesuburbsand theneighborhoodbegantofillwithblight. Butoverthenextcoupledecades,therewasa renewedinterestintheneighborhood’shistory andculture,andin1971,theMarignywasgiven protectionthroughaspecialhistoricpreservationzoningordinance.TheFaubourgMarigny ImprovementAssociationremainsactive.
Johnson,itsleader,saystheassociationiscurrentlyfocusedoncurbingthedevelopmentof hotelsintheareaaswellasshort-termrentals, bothofwhichhaveledtosoaringrentcostsand displacementoflongtimeresidentsandartists whowereoncedrawntoitsaffordability
“Weareinterestedinpropertiesthatservethe neighborhoodandhotelsdon’toftenservethe neighborhood,”Johnsonsays.
