Exploring artand thehumanities: The Helis Foundation JohnScott Center offersengaging communityevents
BY AMANDA MCELFRESH, AMCELFRESH@THEADVOCATE.COM
This articleisbrought to youbyLouisianaEndowment forthe Humanities.
In his lifeand work, artistJohnScott found inspiration everywhere, carrying asketchbook withhim at all times and drawing inspiration from jazz musicians to fold in concepts of improvisation into his visual art. Today, withThe Helis Foundation John ScottCenter, theLouisiana Endowmentfor theHumanities seeks to carryonthatlegacywithnumerous public events that aredesigned to expose thepower and creativityofart to all.
“John Scott’slifeethos wastopasson information, experiences and resources. Thatinformsagreat deal of thework we do,” said Christina Lott, program managerfor thecenter. “For us,the arts areentangled in everything and areavehicle we can use to explore humanities issues and concernswhile expanding access to spaces that are both beautiful and impactful.” Membersofthe public will have an opportunitytodojustthatduring three events in September, eachone designed to showcasethe positiveeffects that artcan have.OnSeptember 13, the Studio Insights panel discussion will featureindividuals who had close personal or professional ties to Scottspeaking about his workspaces and methods
“He had an open practicewhere people could come in and out.Itwas an approachable and constant learning experience,”Lottsaid. The panel discussion will be acontinuation of the conversation begun by therstStudio Insights panel in June and an earlier eventinwhichindividuals were able to create artinspired by some of Scott’s unnished works and leovermaterials, withafocus on howart can be an open and collaborativeexperience.
Then, on September 16, aFamily FunDay at theJohn ScottCenterwill featureactivities t foreveryonefrom young children to older adults. The centerisopen everySaturday, but theFamily FunDay will include special events likestory-sharing, art-making, make-and-takecras and music.
Lastly,onSeptember 21, thecenter will hostanartseducatorsocialwitha guided tour,mix-and-mingle,refreshments and apresentation about Gustave Blache III ArtScholarships for Aspiring Artists to supportLouisiana high school students or recent graduateswho want to study at theSchool of Visual Arts in NewYork City.
“Weknowthatsome people have limited access to thearts, whichisamain reason whyweatthe center want to givepeople an avenue and an abilityto
exploretheir humanityand John Scott’s beliefthatart is life,”Lottsaid. “There’s something foreveryone in our center.Especially forpeople from Louisiana, they can takepride in knowing that thereisa global artistwho came from NewOrleans and createdworks from his experiences in this space. It’s agreat lesson about the importanceofseeing yourself in your world and responding to your world. Everyone can benet from that.”
The events also align withthe Louisiana Endowmentfor theHumanities’overall mission to champion the humanities across thestate.Inaddition to thecenter, whichopened in September 2022, other LEHinitiatives include “64 Parishes,” aquarterly magazine on Louisiana history and cultureaswell as an accompanying websiteand online encyclopedia; early childhoodeducation and literacyprograms; and re-granting, wherebyLEH takes in funds and distributes them to museums, historical sites and organizationsthat supportthe humanities in Louisiana.
“Asastatewide private nonprotand theLouisiana affiliate forthe National Endowmentfor theHumanities, wesee our role as being stewardsand supportersofthe state’s cultureand history,” said Lauren Noel, theorganization’s marketing director. “We’re dedicatedto increasing access to thehumanities in everyparishinLouisiana. We have alot of ongoing initiatives that we’reproud of and sincethe center opened last year,it hasbecome another wonderful avenue forustoexpand access to thehumanities in conjunction withvisual arts.”
All of theeventswill takeplaceatThe Helis Foundation John ScottCenter, 938 LafayetteStreet,New Orleans. The centerisopen to thepublic from 12 p.m. to 6p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays Formoreinformation, visit leh.org/our-work/the-helisfoundation-john-scott-center/.
