FREDDIEKINGIIIheld yetanothermeeting onthequestionof whethersomebarsin NewOrleansshould beabletomaintain “parklets”—streetsideparkingspaces usedasoutdoor seatingareas.
Itwasthelatestina seriesofmeetingsand discussionsdatingto beforethepandemic ontheuseofparklets.Incallingforthe meeting,Kingsaidhewantedtoget “adults”intheroomontheissue.
Weagreeit’stimeforreasonto prevail.Thebenefitsofparkletshave beenrecognizedsincebeforethe pandemic.MayorLaToyaCantrell’s administrationwassettolauncha pilotprogramwhenCovidhit,and shefast-trackedittohelpbusinesses survivethelockdowns.Wesupport allowingbusinessestousethem underappropriateconditions.
Lastyear,thecouncilpassedan ordinanceintendedtomakethe parkletprogrampermanentforthose thatmetcertainconditions.We endorsedthatidea.
Unfortunately,theordinancedid notworkasexpected,particularly forbusinessownerswithparkletsin areasoutsidetheFrenchQuarter. Last-minutechangestotheordinance appeartohaveseeminglyinadvertentlybarredmanyofthosebusinesses fromoperatingparklets.
Infact,formuchofthepastyearthe city’sOfficeofEconomicDevelopment hasworkedwiththeOfficeofNightime Economy,businessownersandothers onthoseamendments,aprocessKing wasalsoinvolvedin.Asrecentlyaslast month,itappearedthecouncilwas ontracktotweaktheordinanceand allowthedozenorsoimpactedbarsto continueoperatingtheirparklets.

Meanwhile,Kingnowsayshewon’t introducetheproposedamendments becausetheywouldapplycitywide andheinsistsheneverhadany intentionofintroducingthem.This runscountertowhattheadministration,barownersandevenother councilmembershavebelieved.
Kingisclearlyfrustratedatbeing thrustintothecenteroftheparklets fight.HesaysheintroducedtheoriginalordinanceonlybecauseCouncil MemberLesliHarriswasforcedto recuseherselfbecauseofherhusband’sbusinessconcerns. While Kingmayhaveinitiallyagreedto authortheordinanceasacourtesy toHarris, astheauthorofrecordhe ownsitssuccessesaswellas itsfailures
Moreover,King’sdistrictincludes theareawheresuccessfulparklets arenowthreatened—aswellasthe FrenchQuarter,whereresidentsloudly opposeparklets.Whobettertobethe adultintheroomthanhe?
