BorninCalifornia,Gendroncametotheareaand marriedaCreolemanwithaFrenchlastname.Sheand herhusband,Louis,putdownrootsinHahnvilleinSt. CharlesParishandneverleft.Shestillworksfromher studiothere.
Tohelpbringinmoney,Gendronbegantomakeart inspiredbyLouisianalife,creatingcolorfulclayand woodfigurinesandotherartthatcapturesthepeople andplacesofthearea.Thefigurinesarewhimsicaland soulful,withexpressivefaces,brightclothingandother nodstolocalculture.

“Thejazzmenaremyfavorite,”saysGendron,whois now85yearsold.“IjustpaintwhatIsee;it’sveryfreein Herhumblebeginningsturnedintonationalfame.
In1985,Gendronwasoneof100artistsnationwideto bechosentopaintanEastereggfortheWhiteHouse EasterEggRoll.In2001,shewasinvitedtodecoratea WhiteHouseChristmasornament,whichshecreatedo asceneinSt.CharlesParish:abustofformerLouisiana Gov.MichaelHahn,shownathishomeonElmStreet inHahnville.

Oneofhermajorprojectswasacollectionofpaintingsandwoodfiguresthatdepictedthe1811Slave RevoltatDestrehanPlantation,whichshedonated totheplantation.Thatworkwasfeaturedina2022 documentarycalled“GumboCoalition,”produced byformerNewOrleansMayorMarcMorial.Shewas alsothesubjectofabookpublishedbyUniversity ofLouisianaatLafayettecalled,“LorraineGendron: LouisianaFolkArtist.”
Thesedays,Gendronmainlystickstoherbeloved paintedwoodcutouts.It’scertainlyeasierforLouis tocutwoodwithabandsawintheirHanhnvillebackyardratherthangatherMississippiRivermud.

Whileshemissesinteractingwiththepublicatart showsandfestivals,she’shappytocontinuetobring herworktothemasses,hopinghertabletopfigures helpviewerstakepauseandrecallscenesspecific toLouisiana.
