for prizes, and at others they’ll find giveaways, health screenings, product samples, free massages, coupons, discounts and more. Pick up a “Wellness Passport,” have it stamped at six different booths and enter a drawing for prizes at Center Stage. That’s also where you’ll see a lineup of demonstrations on self-defense, dance workouts, yoga, hula hooping, martial arts, brain-balancing and boxing. The Wellness Expo is presented by East Jefferson General Hospital and is sponsored in part by Canon Hospice, Audibel Hearing Aids, Diagnostic Imaging Services, Harch Hyperbarics and Tulane Medical Center. All of them will have booths where visitors can find out what the businesses can do for them. (See a list of demonstrations on p. 8, a directory of exhibitors’ info on p. 9 and an expo map on p. 12.) East JEffErson GEnEral Hospital (EJGH) is serious about its responsibility to deliver quality health care to its community. With more than 3,000 employees, EJGH is one of Jefferson Parish’s largest employers, and its community of patients includes an extensive circle of friends and families of its employees. Every patient gets the family treatment, though, because physicians take a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment. The hospital has 454 beds and 650 physicians on staff. The 20-acre campus of the publicly owned hospital houses medical office buildings; the Yenni Treatment Center for outpatient cancer treatment;

the Domino Pavilion for sameday surgery and outpatient services; the Wellness Center fitness facility and the East Jefferson Imaging Center. EJGH also tries to improve the health of its community with programs such as free and discounted screenings, HealthFinder’s free referral and appointment service and seminars and education programs about a variety of health topics. Experienced cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons in the EJGH Cardiology unit help patients make the best decisions possible about treatments for cardiovascular diseases. The hospital provides state-of-the-art facilities for diagnosing and treating cardiac problems. Innovations include atrial fibrillation, minimally invasive treatments, video-assisted thoracic surgeries and groundbreaking treatments for pulmonary embolisms and deep-vein thrombosis. It also has an accredited cardiac rehab program. A Coronary Care Unit provides specialized care to patients with heart attacks, unstable angina and other conditions requiring heart monitoring. EJGH cardiac services received the Gold Performance Award from the American Heart Association. Cardiology also offers the public free seminars, education and prevention programs about heart disease, obesity and smoking. Teaching diabetic patients to stay on top of their disease is the goal of the EJGH Diabetes Management Center, which provides the expertise and tools patients need: evaluations, education programs, nutritional counseling, medica-

tion management, teaching the symptoms of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, foot care, fitness and other services. The center also sponsors a support group where patients can share information, food tips, advice and camaraderie. For the public, the Diabetes Management Center offers free health fairs and classes in diabetes basics and Diabetes Dynamics, a two-class course covering the basics of diabetes management, nutrition, foot care, exercise goal-setting and motivation. A team of experienced dieticians at EJGH’s food & nutrition services Department design medical nutrition therapies to help patients in the hospital recover from surgery or disease and nutrition plans for outpatients to control disease symptoms and improve overall health. The dieticians have expertise in specialized nutrition support for cancer, celiac disease, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, gestational diabetes, heart disease, hyperlipidemias, hypertension and weight management. Through the Wellness Center, the department performs nutritional counseling for fitness and sports, weight loss, disease prevention and health maintenance. People committed to making lasting diet and lifestyle changes can get on a nutrition counseling program — for about six months — with monthly sessions to keep them on track and help them reach your goals. EJGH Healthy lifestyles offers a packed calendar of social events, fitness activities and educational opportunities, including everything from health assessments and nutrition

classes to outdoor recreation, weekend excursions, and gettogethers at local venues. Healthy Lifestyles members can attend seminars by physicians on topics ranging from joint replacement to nutrition. They also receive the latest information on medical breakthroughs and lifestyle choices designed to help them live healthier lives. Activities and classes include prenatal yoga, yoga at the park, sibling classes, tai chi and more. The program offers free and low-cost health screenings, room upgrades at EJGH, health assessments and discounts at the EJGH Wellness Center, the Woman and Child Boutique and The Fitness Principle. Members get discounts at a variety of merchants in the area and complimentary local fax and copying services are available. The EJGH Imaging Center on Clearview Parkway gives patients all the diagnostic imaging services of a hospital, but at an off-site location (read: easy parking) where patients can get same- or next-day appointments and speedy results. More than a dozen radiologists are on staff to consult with patients about tests; perform state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging using an open MRI, 64-slice multi-detector CT and X-rays, and to interpret the results. The center also offers filmless radiology for referring physicians, giving them 24/7 access to the images they need. EJGH’s oncology unit provides a full spectrum of care for cancer patients in the hospital and those receiving outpatient treatments. The hospital’s team includes medical and

he U.S. health care system in is still in flux, with several states mounting court challenges to President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act and reports about Congress amending the law — and the House trying to repeal it. Medicare’s fate also may hang on the president’s health care reform plan. In response to a report about the health of Medicare, Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, wrote on the White House blog (www. whitehouse.gov/blog) May 13, “Without the historic deficit reduction in the Affordable Care Act, Medicare would have gone bankrupt in 2016 — only five years from now.” Uncertainty is leading people to take charge of their health — and health care — by learning about screenings, information resources, what medical services are available and who offers what. The public also wants to know about alternative therapies, fitness programs, aesthetic improvement options and ways to improve their well-being. Gambit’s 13th annual Wellness Expo™ can be a great resource for solving many of these dilemmas (though not the political wranglings). Lakeside Shopping Center (3301 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie; www.lakesideshopping. com) plays host to the expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 11. More than three dozen exhibitors will man booths covering everything from birth to hospice care, cardiology to hearing aids, massage therapy to diabetes. At some booths, visitors can enter drawings

radiation oncologists, surgeons, hematologists, immunologists, a range of specialized nurses, pain management specialists, dieticians and others who deal with patients’ emotional, psychological and spiritual needs. In 2007 EJGH affiliated with the MD Anderson Physicians Network, which gives local doctors extra resources and the latest information on research and technology for treating cancer patients. The Yenni Treatment Center provides state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment equipment, including nuclear medicine, CT, MRI, mammography, MRI breast imaging and PET Fusion. The hospital uses a host of therapies, including Trilogy, a beam radiation treatment, and Novalis Tx, imageguided radiosurgery. A Cancer Care Navigator makes the journey through cancer treatment more manageable, helping with insurance questions, scheduling, medication management and quality-of-life issues. The Outpatient Infusion Center puts a host of services under one roof. People who receive cancer therapies can sign up for Fast Track, a program that cuts wait and treatment times. EJGH plans to expand the Outpatient Infusion Center from its present 3,300 square feet to more than 11,000 square feet. Getting enough sleep is essential to good health and can have a marked affect on a person’s quality of life, both at work and at home. To determine what interrupts a person’s slumber, doctors at the EJGH Sleep Center conduct a sleep study in which a patient spends the night in a quiet home-like bedroom while a polysomnographic technician and respiratory therapist monitor snoring, brain and muscle activity, eye movements, breathing and heart rate to establish sleep patterns. A medical team analyzes the results and develops a course of treatment Sleep apnea, chronic snoring, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome and insomnia are among the conditions treated at the Sleep Center. Because EJGH is dedicated to improving the overall health of its patients and their families, the Wellness Center has a variety of fitness programs, education services, social events and other services aimed at helping

people live full, healthy lives. Staff members design individualized fitness regimens, or members can participate in a variety of classes such as tai chi, line dancing and the Latin-inspired dance workout Spicy Steps. The 38,000-square-foot medical fitness facility offers cardiovascular exercise plans, strength training, two swimming pools, a steam room and whirlpool, a raised walking track, massage therapists and more. Specialty classes include meditation, stress management, aquatics for patients with fibromyalgia or multiple sclerosis, and disease management. EJGH dieticians lend their expertise through nutritional counseling for weight loss, gaining strength after a disease or maintaining optimum health. EJGH Woman and Child Services comprises everything a family needs before and during pregnancy as well as after delivery. The highly trained staff includes obstetricians, high-risk pregnancy physicians, neonatal nurses, certified Lamaze educators, ultrasound technicians and lactation consultants. Labor, delivery and recovery suites have a home-like atmosphere that promotes bonding with the newborn and can accommodate visits with family and friends. There are nutrition consultants, a resource library and a breastfeeding center staffed with nurses and lactation consultants who can give advice about breastfeeding. For babies who need special care, there are neonatologists and a neonatal Intensive Care Unit and nursery. EJGH is among the few hospitals in Louisiana to be awarded a Guided Infant Feeding Techniques Certification by the Louisiana Maternal & Child Health Coalition.

STATE-OF-THE-ART HEARING aids and caring professionals who teach patients how to use them can help bring the hard of hearing out of their isolation. Audibel Hearing Aids manufactures premium hearing devices and sells them only through the company’s network of outlets. An audiologist tests a patient’s hearing, and an Audibel representative consults with the patient about his or her lifestyle to find out what needs and limitations the work and home environments present. A hearing aid is then customized for that patient. A hearing care professional helps the patient decide which of the seven styles is best for them, and makes sure the device fits comfortably. Finally, the Audibel team teaches the patient about the hearing aid, how it works and its special features. Audibel hearing aids have feedback cancelers that eliminate whistling sounds common to hearing aids, and technology that enables the devices to perform well — even in a noisy environment.

CARING FOR A TERMINALLY ill loved one while also trying to handle the grief associated with death as well as the regular responsibilities of life can be overwhelming. The DIS Women’s Center in Metairie offers digital mammography, ultrasound, hysterosonography, digital X-rays, instant vertebral assessments, cyst aspirations, therapeutic massages and more. HArCH HypErbAriCS provides painless, non-invasive hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for a range of medical problems, including traumatic brain injury, stroke, autism, cerebral palsy, birth injuries, learning disabilities, multiple sclerosis, carbon monoxide poisoning and fibromyalgia. The therapy involves inhaling 100 percent oxygen in a total body chamber. The oxygen dissolves into all of the body’s fluids, carrying it to places that lack good circulation. Normally, oxygen is carried only through red blood cells that travel within the vascular system. The increased oxygen enhances the body’s natural healing processes, treating functional changes in body systems caused by injury or disease. The therapy can induce the body to heal tissues and develop new blood vessels at wound sites and is helpful in treating brain and neurological injuries and diseases, cerebral palsy and autism. Clinic owner Dr. Paul G. Harch is recognized as one of the foremost authorities in the U.S. on the use of HBOT and SPECT brain imaging for neurological conditions. tulane Medical Center (TMC) is a teaching, research and medical facility that uses the combined resources of the 234-bed Tulane University Hospital and Clinic and Tulane School of Medicine to provide health care to patients all over the metro area. The comprehensive system has 24 clinics, and specialty centers include Tulane Cancer Center, Tulane Abdominal Transplant, TulaneLakeside Women’s Center, two multispecialty centers and Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine. Tulane-Lakeside Hospital and Tulane Hospital for Children also are part of the TMC system. TMC has grown steadily and expanded its interests since its beginnings in 1834 as one of

only 14 medical schools in the U.S. It employs hundreds of physicians in a variety of fields covering all areas of health care. nutrition and exercise. Kids need to put aside the video games and get outside and run around.” While obesity is readily apparent, the heart disease that often accompanies it may not be as obvious. Typical warning signs are pressure in the chest, aching in the jaw, shoulder blade or either arm, and shortness of breath. More than a third of people with heart disease ignore the symptoms or don’t see the doctor in time to treat them. “Unfortunately, the presenting symptom in 35 percent of people is death,” says Smart, who explains that women may ignore the symptoms because theirs are often not as recognizable as those experienced by men. Many men may fail to react due to a sense of immortality. “The idea that men are indestructible carries with them into middle age,” Smart says. On the other hand, men are more likely than women to go to the emergency room when experiencing a heart attack or stroke, and they’re more likely to have a life-saving angioplasty or bypass surgery. Another way heart disease affects men differently than women is that men generally have an earlier onset of the

hen it comes to diseases that claim the most lives annually, heart disease is the uncontested champion. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is the No. 1 killer of both men and women in the United States and is the leading cause of death in the entire world. For many people, though, heart disease is preventable. Though the term “heart disease” encompasses a variety of conditions including congenital defects and abnormalities associated with viruses, the most common forms are heart attack and stroke, conditions caused by atherosclerosis — hardening of the arteries. “Atherosclerosis or coronary artery disease is unfortunately very common for two reasons,” says Dr. Frank Smart, a professor and chief of cardiology at LSU Health Sciences Center. “The first is genetics and the second is lifestyle. You can’t do anything about genetics, but you can something about lifestyle.” A family history of heart disease — a first-degree male relative with a heart attack, stroke or blockage before age 60, or a first-degree female relative with any of these before age 65 — significantly increases one’s chance of heart disease and need for early awareness and prevention, Smart says. However, doctors recommend all men adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle regardless of their genetic predisposition. “It’s easier to prevent heart disease than to treat it,” says Dr. Carl “Chip” Lavie, director of cardiac rehabilitation and preventative cardiology at John Ochsner Heart & Vascular Institute. Selling this message has proved challenging. As Americans develop increasingly sedentary lifestyles and opt for fat- and salt-laden fast foods, obesity (a major contributor to heart disease) has climbed to record levels nationwide. Lavie says 30 percent of adults in the U.S. meet the criteria for obesity; 70 percent are either overweight or obese. In the South, where obesity rates are higher than in other areas, the need for prevention is even more pressing. According to the American Heart Association, the 13 states with the highest numbers of death from heart disease are all Southern. “The problem is a combination of things,” Lavie says of the regional divergence. “Obesity is a problem by itself, but the food consumed in the South and socioeconomic factors, which add to the obesity problem, also play a role in the increased heart disease. A lot of this goes hand in hand.” Other risk factors include smoking, high levels of LDL or “bad” cholesterol, high triglycerides and low levels of HDL or “good” cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension or high blood pressure, physical inactivity and psychological stress, all of which can be controlled with proper care. In recent years, the number of male smokers has declined, and over the past several decades, incidents of heart disease have decreased, Lavie says, but that trend may be reversing. “We’re seeing indicators that the decrease (in heart disease) may be stopping, and the concern is that we’ll see an increase in heart disease because of obesity,” Lavie says. Along with the rise of obesity, a larger percentage of the population is diabetic, and a greater number of young people are being diagnosed with heart disease. Doctors say prevention must begin in childhood. “There’s more of a recognition that attention has to be paid to children to help them have a heart-healthy lifestyle for the future,” says Dr. Robert Ascuitto, professor of clinical pediatrics and director of cardiology at Children’s Hospital. “It’s important to strive to achieve a heart-healthy life through good

disease. Doctors believe the presence of estrogen protects women from heart disease until they go through menopause. “Women lag about 10 to 14 years behind men in developing heart disease, but after menopause, the gap between heart disease in women and men greatly narrows,” Lavie says. “Although women live longer than men, their lifetime risk of heart disease is quite similar.” For heart disease patients, treatment guidelines are the same as those recommended for prevention: Don’t smoke; perform exercises that raise your heart rate (like jogging, walking fast or swimming) for a minimum of 30 minutes a day most days of the week; take blood pressure medication if your blood pressure is high; regulate high cholesterol with diet and medication; minimize stress, and if you’re obese, lose weight. People 40 and older should have their blood pressure checked every six months and their cholesterol checked every year (if it’s high, check every six months), Smart says. If there’s a family history of heart disease, screening should start in the 30s. When drastic lifestyle changes are imperative, rehabilitation programs can provide the support many patients need. “(After) a heart attack ... the patient no longer falls into the category of primary prevention. They fall into secondary prevention or rehabilitative and we have established programs,” Lavie says. “We refer them to cardiac rehabilitation and encourage them to attend.” Patients take part in the program three times a week for 12 weeks and are provided with support by dietitians, nurses and exercise physiologists. “They work as a team for patients, and they’re also … cheerleaders for the patients,” Lavie says. Camaraderie with fellow patients is another advantage of the program. “One of the other benefits in addition to physical improvement is that there’s significant mental improvement,” says Dr. Gary Menszer, interventionalist and medical director of cardiac rehab at East Jefferson General Hospital. “A lot of patients who’ve had heart attacks or open heart surgery don’t have confidence or a positive outlook. All those things can be improved with cardiac rehab.” Patients

can also use the hospital’s Wellness Center for an ongoing exercise regimen and access to healthcare professionals. Ultimately, though, accountability for recovering from heart disease lies with the patient. “At some point in time, we are all responsible for our own health care and well-being,” Smart says.

Men have increased risk for depression if they have psychiatric disorders (including substance misuse), a family history of depression, chronic medical diseases, or are unemployed or of lower socioeconomic status.

Sexually active men should receive additional preventative screenings. Any man who has more than one partner should be tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The population at higher risk for syphilis includes men who have same-sex intercourse, engage in high-risk sexual behavior or exchange sex for drugs, as well as sex workers and men in adult correctional facilities. Those behaviors also put them at a higher risk for HIV; others at risk for this disease include men who have unprotected sex with multiple partners, injection drug users, bisexuals, those who have had STIs, men with a history of sex partners who are HIV-positive, and people who received a blood transfusion between 1978 and 1985. The Centers for Disease Control says the New Orleans area currently has the fourth-highest rate of syphilis in the U.S. at 12.2 cases per 100,000 people. Louisiana has the highest rate among states, with 16.8 cases per 100,000 people.

A healthy diet helps reduce risk for both diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). If a man’s body mass index (BMI) is 30 or higher, he is considered obese and should receive counseling. Being overweight puts a man at risk for CVD, as does hypertension, a family history of heart disease, smoking and a sedentary lifestyle. Obesity also puts a man at risk for diabetes.

2

The USPSTF recommends doctors ask about tobacco and alcohol use to identify alcohol abuse and provide patients with information about how to quit smoking.

3

4

5

Men with standard blood pressure greater than 135/80 mm Hg (treated or untreated) should be screened for type II diabetes, even if they have no symptoms.

6

Men over age 35 should be screened for lipid disorders (including high cholesterol) every five years. Men with increased coronary heart disease (CHD) risks should be screened beginning at age 20. Increased CHD risk includes diabetes, a previous personal history of CHD or noncoronary atherosclerosis, a family history of cardiovascular disease before age 50 in male relatives or age 60 in female relatives, tobacco use, hypertension, or obesity.

7

8

Aspirin can help prevent cardiovascular disease in men ages 45 to 79 if the benefit due to a

reduction in heart attacks outweighs the risk of possible gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Screen for colorectal cancer from ages 50 to 75 using fecal occult blood testing, sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy.

9

USPSTF recommends screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm in men ages 65 to 75 who have smoked more than 100 cigarettes. If an aneurysm is found, it can be repaired before it ruptures, which can cause life-threatening bleeding.

10

While an USPSTF review of prostate cancer screening in 2008 did not prompt the panel to include it in primary care, Dr. Benjamin Lee, a professor of urology at Tulane University, recommends men begin prostate screenings at 40. He recommends a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test be given every year. The USPSTF’s recommendations for preventive care can be viewed at: www.epss.ahrq.gov/ePSS/GetResults.do?new=true. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is a panel of private-sector experts in prevention and primary care. The USPSTF evaluates the benefits of clinical preventative services and recommends which ones should be included in primary care. The information presented here was compiled from the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force, the Mayo Clinic’s online database and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s online database.

People with blood pressure less than 120/80 mm Hg should be screened for high blood pressure every two years. Screen every year if systolic blood pressure is between 120 and 139 mm Hg, or if diastolic blood pressure is between 80 and 90 mm Hg.

HPV: What Men Need to Know BY MARTA JEWSON

T

hanks to the education efforts of health care professionals, it’s common knowledge that young women ages 13 to 26 should be vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause cervical cancer. Many people don’t realize that HPV is a concern for men, too. The virus can cause penile, anal, head and neck cancer and, more commonly, genital warts. The vaccine, originally approved only for women, has since been proven to be safe and effective for men, protecting them from the two strains most likely to cause genital warts. “You can’t ever reduce the epidemic of HPV unless you vaccinate the whole sexual

network. That would mean boys as well,” says Patricia Kissinger, a professor in the department of epidemiology at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. “Unfortunately, men are not routinely tested for it.” Kissinger says the current issue is determining who will pay for men to be vaccinated: insurance companies or individuals themselves. She says women are targeted for vaccination because HPV directly affects them more often than men. “The more dangerous (strains) that cause cervical cancer in girls aren’t necessarily symptomatic — you can’t see them,” Kissinger says. Each year 800 men get HPV-related penile cancer; 1,100 men get HPV-related anal cancer, and 5,700 men get HPV-related head and neck cancers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Kissinger says there’s a push for men to be vaccinated, but the CDA hasn’t officially suggested it. The HPV vaccine Gardisil protects against four common strains of HPV — two that cause genital warts and two that cause cancers. The two strains that cause genital warts are responsible for 90 percent of genital warts cases, according to the CDC. The vaccine prevents new infections, but it can’t cure existing infections. It is delivered in a three-shot series over six months. According to the CDC, at least 50 percent of the sexually active U.S. population will be infected with HPV at some point. The virus can be passed even when an infected partner shows no signs or symptoms. HPV is spread most commonly through vaginal and anal sex, but also can be spread through other contact and oral sex. “Men should know that (HPV) is the No. 1 cause of cervical cancer in women,” Kissinger says. “Barrier methods, notably condoms, will protect the shaft of the penis.” Men can only fully protect themselves by abstaining from sex and sexual contact. If men are vaccinated, it helps reduce the spread of strains that cause genital warts. “Condoms are probably the best method of preventing if you aren’t abstaining,” she says.

Breastfeeding myths By AmBer BAllow

a

gas pains and irritability. Breastfeeding exclusively in the early months of nursing provides protection against ovulation and pregnancy. While the infant is nursing frequently (every one to three hours around the clock with no long stretches of sleep and no solid foods), the breastfeeding hormones prevent or suppress ovulation. This is called the lactational amenorrhea method, or LAM. Breastfeeding is not a deterrant to sexual activity, but some women experience vaginal dryness because of certain breastfeeding hormones; many over-the-counter remedies help with this issue. If done correctly, breastfeeding is not painful. The mom will experience some tenderness the first week or so until her nipples are conditioned to nursing, but cracking, blistering and pain are not part of breastfeeding. “Learning the proper way to latch and position the baby on the breast, along with knowledge regarding feeding frequency and adequacy, can help to avoid problems and ensure the breastfeeding experience is … positive and rewarding for both mom and baby,” Gourgues says. A 2009 study published by the Journal of American Dietetic Association shows that breastfeeding helps new moms shed weight gained during pregnancy. Women who breastfeed burn an average of 500 calories a day producing milk. Breastfeeding mothers lose more weight after pregnancy than bottle-feeding moms, even if the bottle-feeding group consumes fewer calories. Mothers who breastfeed exclusively have a decrease in body fat, hip fat and lower thigh circumferences compared to bottle-feeding moms. Even in unseen ways, breastfeeding helps new moms regain their pre-pregnant form more quickly. The hormone oxytocin, released during breastfeeding, helps the uterus return to the size and shape it was prior to pregnancy. Moms who breastfeed report regaining their prebaby figures much more quickly than bottle-feeding moms. “Women need to know that breastfeeding is the optimal nutrition for their baby, and although natural, it is a process that must be learned by both mother and infant,” Gourgues says.

lthough the benefits of breastfeeding are well known, some myths persist. Among these misconceptions: breastfeeding causes sagging breasts, is painful and causes weight gain. “I meet women all the time who chose not to breastfeed all because of false rumors,” says Janice Gourgues, a nurse at East Jefferson General Hospital’s (EJGH) Woman and Child Services department. “Breastfeeding education is so important for expecting mothers. It is important to learn how to breastfeed correctly to fully reap its many benefits.” Gourgues has been a board-certified lactation consultant for more than 20 years and teaches a breastfeeding class, ABC’s of Breastfeeding, where she tries to present facts to counter fiction. Gourgues says the biggest myth is that breastfeeding causes breasts to sag — when pregnancy is the culprit. The hormone relaxin, released to aid in delivery, causes muscles and ligaments to relax, including those supporting the breasts. Many new moms are concerned that breastfeeding may prohibit them from taking medications, but very few medications are contraindicated during breastfeeding. Women who have heart problems, depression, high blood pressure and allergies can take medications for these problems and still nurse a baby. As always, women should consult their physicians and pediatricians to mak sure specific medications are safe for them and their infant. Another common misconception is that breastfeeding women must restrict their diets. Women who breastfeed are encouraged to continue the same well-balanced, nutritious diet they consumed during pregnancy. Foods are not restricted unless there is a family history of allergies or intolerance. However, an allergy to cow’s milk is very common among infants. If babies show symptoms of sensitivity (spitting up, gas pain, wheezing, rashes), moms should limit their intake of cow’s milk. Otherwise, women can eat what they want within moderation, being especially careful when it comes to foods containing caffeine. More than three to four servings a day could cause the baby to suffer
