Questions&Answers Meet Dr.Kaplow
AbouthalfofU.S.childrenwill experience atraumatic event during their lives, butfew behavioral health facilities areequipped to provideevidence-based treatments forbothtrauma, grief andtheir interplay.Asalicensed clinical psychologist specializing in theassessmentand treatment of youthexposed to trauma and loss,Iknowthatidentifyingand addressing trauma andgrief as early as possibleiscrucialto helpingkids lead healthy, happy livesand promotingresiliency over thelongerterm.
Over theyears,I’veoverseen risk screeningsand interventionsfor youthimpacted by tragedies such as HurricaneHarvey, the Santa Fe,TXschool shooting, and most recently, the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde,TX. I’ve also served as aconsultantto numerous work groupsdealingwith childhood bereavement,Prolonged GriefDisorder, and PTSD as well as theMass Violenceand Children Working Groupofthe FBI.
In 2012,Ifounded theTrauma andGrief (TAG)CenterinAnn Arbor when Iwas on faculty at the UniversityofMichigan Medical School.In2014, Iestablished a second TAGCenteratThe Hackett Center forMentalHealthinHouston andwas excitedtostand up athird location in NewOrleans when I joined theChildren’s HospitalNew Orleans team in 2021
Creating aTAG Center in New Orleans wasextremelyimportant to me,particularly giventhe number of traumasand losses that youthhere arefacing, includingthe high rates of COVID-19 deathsand ongoing community violence
As theexecutive director of both theNew Orleans andHouston TAG Centers, we’reabletopartner in the development anddissemination of evidence-based treatments foryouth exposedtotraumaand bereavement, raising thestandard of care forvulnerableyouth across Texasand Louisiana.
Trauma AndGrief Center (TAG)
Identifyingand addressingtrauma andgrief as earlyaspossible is crucialtohelpingkids lead healthy, happylives andpromoting resiliency over thelongerterm. Oneofthe uniquefeaturesofthe TAGCenteristhatweunderstand theimportant differencebetween trauma andbereavement, and we useevidence-based approaches to addresseach in themost effectiveway
To ensureaccess to best practice trauma-and grief-informed mental health care, theTAG Center focuses on community outreach initiatives, such as partneringwithThriveKids school-based wellnessinitiatives andthe hospital’sHigh5Project,a program that aimstoensurethatall children with mental andbehavioral disordersreceive thecareand supporttheyneed to thrive
We know from our ownresearch that thedeath of aloved oneisthe number one predictor of school problems, above andbeyondany otherformoftrauma. So,helping schoolstoeffectivelyidentify “atrisk” youthand providetraumaandgrief-focusedtreatmentisa critically importantcomponentof ourcommunity outreach.
