Instead of contrasting colors on exterior shutters and window frames, homeowners currently favor more subtle, natural shades drawn from colors contained in the building materials.
Landscape 2012 paint color trends follow shades of nature
Painting pring — that annual season of renewal — makes people want to freshen their living spaces, from new bedding plants that add life and color to the landscape outside S to brightened vistas inside that impart a sense of new beginnings. A fresh coat of paint is an easy and affordable way to do that, and color trends for 2012 draw heavily on the natural colors in the American landscape, according to Debbie Zimmer, color expert at the Paint Quality Institute. The organization was formed in 1989 to educate people about the advantages of using quality interior and exterior paints and coatings, as well as color trends and decorating with paint. “Native plants and flowers, oceans and lakes and rocks and minerals are the sources of inspiration for the paint colors that are ‘in’ this year,” Zimmer says. “If you’re thinking about repainting your home interior, look to the great American outdoors.” Here are some highlights:

9
TOP: Blues are soothing, and there are so many different shades that almost everyone can find one they like.
>
BOTTOM: Greens are very popular this year, both inside and out.
>
>
Jewels of the sea — Blues gained popularity in 2011 and continue to be red hot this year. “From sparkling sea glass blue to colonial blue-gray, blues are suitable for all living spaces, being a naturally soothing color that is loved — in one iteration or another — by almost everyone,” Zimmer says.
>
from farm to forest — Greens, ranging from the light ranges of celery and asparagus to darker shades of fir and fern, allow homeowners to bring the comforting feelings of the world outside into the environment within. According to Zimmer, dining rooms and kitchens are the natural spots for in-vogue greens, but the hue is also at home in family rooms and bedrooms.
>
maJestic purple mountains — “A harmonious combination of patriotic blue and red hues, violet can add punch to any room when used as an accent color, or serve as the dominant color in a bedroom,” Zimmer says. Natural shades of color aren’t the only news for 2012, however. Zimmer says three other paint and decorating trends also are gaining popularity this year.
1
patterns — Patterned paint will take center stage in 2012, with increased interest in houndstooth finishes, lacy designs and bold color-blocking techniques. “In some cases, pattern will be the main decorating feature in a room,” Zimmer says. “In others, it will provide a subtle, textured backdrop for fine furnishings and artwork.”
2
Black and white — The classic combination of black and white isn’t just
3
exterior paint comBinations — On the home exterior, shutter colors are shifting away from the traditional high-contrast green, red or black to a more monochromatic palette. “You’ll see more shutters painted just a shade darker than the siding,” Zimmer says. “Owners of homes with stone exteriors can get in on things by matching the shutter color to the dominant color of the stone.”
for Cape Cods any more. You’ll see much more of it in all sorts of settings, from contemporary apartments to historic homes, Zimmer says. “The pairing is a great way to freshen an interior with something smart and stylish,” she says.
Despite all the new colors and trends, Zimmer says some things in the paint world remain the same: “Top-quality, 100 percent acrylic latex paint will continue to provide the best performance and the best value to budget-conscious homeowners.” Courtesy of the Home Improvement News and Information Center

Outdoors The Great Turn your porch or patio into an outdoor ‘room.’
hether you want to create a hub for social activity or a sanctuary where you can escape from the bustle, look to your W outdoor space — porch, patio or yard — and create the extra room you want with some furniture, lighting and accessories. It not only will give you a place to vacation at home with family and friends, but can increase the curb appeal, thus the value, of your property. Here are some tips for making the most of your space: Your porch furniture is sure to define your entire space, says Steve Day, operations manager at Fifthroom.com, an online retailer of outdoor furniture. “We have a lot of people looking for furniture sets or pieces that coordinate,” he says. “For an outdoor room to feel comfortable, it has to be furnished like a true room.” He recommends deep-seating collections or outdoor dining sets that match. “It makes it a no-fail solution,” he says. “Plus, buying in groups usually saves you money.” Curtains, rugs and furniture pillows made for the outdoors can soften the edges of a porch and give the area a finished look. “A lovely outdoor rug can pull together an outdoor space like nothing else: it is soft for bare feet and gives your porch a comfortable feel,” says Mary Morris, author of Front-Porch-Ideas-and-More.com. Keep in mind your color scheme when selecting textile elements like drapes, rugs, pillows and furniture cushions. Making sure all of your softer pieces coordinate will streamline your design, she says. Always check to ensure the fabrics you choose are appropriate for outdoor use. Morris also suggests letting the garden do the decorating. “Grace your porch with seasonal potted plants, hanging baskets and vases of fresh fragrant flowers,” she says. “Dress up your bistro table with a vase of fresh flowers from your garden. Lilacs, gerbera daisies, vincas, roses, even fresh herbs are nice.” Proper lighting will let you enjoy your outdoor area into the evening. While many porches have an overhead light source, outdoor lamps create ambient tones that make an outside room feel more like home. “I have an outdoor ceiling fan with a built-in light,” says Lauren Klock,

a homeowner who recently redecorated her porch. “The fan moves the air to keep the breeze going and the bugs away, and the lighting element is great for evening get-togethers.” With backyard rooms becoming a common way of extending living space, the lines are blurring between indoor and outdoor styles of lighting. Similarly, al fresco dining is very popular, and the addition of fireplaces and gas heaters has led to year-round enjoyment. As a result, the latest exterior lighting fixtures are designed to complement their interior counterparts, allowing homeowners to create a uniform appearance inside and out. “As a general trend, cleaner looks are being seen across all styles (of lighting) – not just in contemporary collections,” says James Thomas, senior designer for Progress Lighting, which manufactures outdoor and landscape fixtures. “Today’s fixtures have less fluting and detail and highlight more of a simplified style. Many companies are starting to offer versatile fixtures that can be used indoors as well as outdoors.” Adding outside lighting can increase your home’s curb appeal, but the American Lighting Association (ALA) recommends homeowners select a style in products with a family of sizes so they can maintain a theme throughout their property. The key to good illumination, however, is the power, according to Joe ReyBarreau, education consultant for the ALA and an associate professor at the University of Kentucky’s School of Interior Design. “Any outdoor lantern should be rated for a minimum of 75 watts of incandescent or 20 watts of compact fluorescent lighting (for lanterns by doors),” he says. Pathway and landscape lighting generally should be more subtle. Rey-Barreau suggests homeowners visit a lighting store that offers a variety of choices and consult with a lighting specialist who can determine what is most important to you – patio, deck, pool, highlighting landscape features, etc. — and the best way to illuminate different areas. welcome home

large, just doing so in smaller spaces. to some trend-watchers, the downscaling is good news. Architects, designers and social observers say the willingness to live with less floor space means Americans are rethinking the way we live and how we use the space we have. Many homeowners are trading square footage for luxuries and personal amenities in a smaller floor plan. “natural materials like American hardwoods are redefining the word ‘luxury,’” says linda Jovanovich of the American hardwood information center. “hardwoods bring richness and warmth to even small rooms, whether it’s used on the floors and walls or crafted into builtins. custom hardwood furnishings like bookcases and cabinets make a home personal — yours alone — and isn’t that the ultimate luxury?” this new definition of luxury: topquality, mostly natural materials; attention to architectural details such as natural wood windows and door frames and mouldings, is one with which architect and author sarah susanka agrees — and what she thinks matters. in 1998, susanka published the first in a series of best-selling “not so Big” books. her professional hunch about the trend started what has become known as the “build-better-not-bigger” movement. “luxury comes from the materials we surround ourselves with,” susanka says. “Beauty comes from natural materials. you can see where they come from – in the grain, the veining. the more natural the materials, like real hardwoods and granite, the more content you are. there’s a quality you can’t name, but you can feel it.”
Design industry consultant Gale steves lays out a similar concept in her book Right-Sizing Your Home. “rightsizing is about making the best use of the spaces you have for the way you live,” she says. here are her tips for living large in a small space. •Create a room within a room. installing hardwood flooring throughout will unify the spaces and make them look larger. use area rugs to define separate areas. you can lay the hardwood flooring on a diagonal to set off special architectural features, such as a dining ell. create a faux “rug” under a dining table with an inset frame of contrasting hardwood, or outline an entire room with contrasting hardwood. • Let furniture do double-duty. use a sectional sofa or a couch and coffee table to delineate an intimate seating area within an open floor plan. • Divide and conquer. use a standing wood-panel screen to create privacy or isolate a work space, such as a bedroom office area. living green is a high priority these days, so remember to look for sustainable materials, such as reclaimed or salvaged woods. susanka sees the 21st-century house as “a well-tailored suit: you use less material, but it fits you perfectly.” while the size of the average u.s. home may be shrinking, the comfort of home is not. space that is functional and satisfies the psyche is the ultimate in luxury. think custom kitchens with pro-quality appliances, posh home spas, stone countertops and the beauty and warmth of hardwood flooring, cabinetry and millwork. those are ways to make your space uniquely yours. welcome home 63
Lighten Up
Illuminated kitchen design is an economical update. stagnant economy and high gas and food prices may have put a major remodeling project out of reach this year, but A there are some economical ways to update your kitchen. Merely changing out the lighting fixtures over a breakfast nook or center island can have a big visual impact and create a fresher, updated look, according to the American Lighting Association (ALA). Perhaps that 1960s pendant lamp that came with the house or the 1980s island light is clashing with the stainless steel refrigerator or dishwasher you bought a few years ago. If your kitchen’s only source of lighting comes from recessed cans, consider adding a few hanging fixtures over the casual eating area and/or the island to serve as aesthetic and functional focal points in the room. Your first task should be installing dimmers for all of the lighting. “The greatest benefit of installing dimmers in an existing kitchen is that the quality of the resulting light will inevitably appear much more comfortable and flexible than what you had before,” explains Joe Rey-Barreau, education consultant for the ALA and an associate professor at the University of Kentucky’s School of Interior Design. “It might not be immediately obvious, but dimming will allow you to adjust the lighting level to the specific task at hand,” he says. “For example, during food preparation and cooking, the lights can be at full output. At other times – after dinner, early in the morning, or late at night – when task lighting requirements are not as demanding, the lights can be set to a more comfortable level.” If you have no idea which type of decorative lighting would suit your decor, visit a lighting showroom with lots of options. The store’s staff can help you select the most appropriate fixture for your space. For example, a few blown-glass pendants or a chandelier designed specifically to suit the configuration of a kitchen island may be the perfect complement for your appliances, sink and faucet hardware. Todd Phillips, a spokesman for lighting manufacturer Quoizel, keeps a close watch on trends in kitchen design. “What’s popular right now is what I would describe as ‘cleaned-up Americana,’” he says. “This is representative of the classic, familiar shapes and elements we all recognize, but with a sleeker appearance and on-trend finishes such as bronze and brushed nickel. “Hand-crafted, hand-forged designs are also gaining in popularity. The key word is ‘clean.’ Think of a black or bronze finish paired with opal white glass, or perhaps natural mica to create a warmer tone.” Modern kitchens are in the middle of the style spectrum, not so steeped in traditional style that they appear dated, but not too

outlandishly contemporary either. “‘Transitional’ is still the operative word,” Phillips says. “Finishes are still neutral, simple and clean. Along with beige, white, bronze and brushed chrome, I’m starting to see more polished chrome. I also find the more custom designs are a bit bolder in their use of color in the kitchen and in the lighting.” Technology also has influenced interior design. “While high-tech consumer products are now a part of all aspects of our lives, the high-tech revolution has only more recently begun to affect kitchen design – and lighting in particular,” Rey-Barreau says. This phenomenon is most apparent in recessed lighting. “Both compact fluorescent and LED bulbs are much more complex than the traditional incandescents we grew up with,” Rey-Barreau says. “This new level of sophistication is affecting lighting fixture design, and therefore we are seeing many more products with a high-tech look in other parts of the kitchen.” Stainless steel appliances, high-tech refrigerators, stoves, microwaves and kitchen faucets have become highly stylized and feature-driven. “Since technology is only going to become more advanced and sophisticated, it’s likely that kitchen design in general will follow this trend,” he says.
Rey-Barreau says the kitchen is a logical place to introduce technology. Some of the LED lighting products that are readily available – undercabinet and in-cabinet lighting, pendants, recessed lights – are perfect for the kitchen. Although LEDs cost more than comparable incandescent, halogen and fluorescent bulbs, they are much more energy efficiency than the others and have a very long life. “Another advantage to LED fixtures is that they generally provide a more modern look, which can easily update the overall look of the kitchen,” Rey-Barreau says. “LEDs are a recent introduction in the market, so those fixtures tend to be more sleek and streamlined. If your objective is to simply update the light source inside existing fixtures, there are LED replacement bulbs available now for use in most standard types of incandescent, halogen and compact fluorescent fixtures.” LED lighting is easy to dim, but some LED sources can be dimmed via standard incandescent dimmers, while others must be matched with specific models. Most manufacturers provide a list of recommended dimmers for their LEDs. Many lighting showrooms offer lighting labs that demonstrate how the different color temperatures of compact fluorescent and LED bulbs will look in your kitchen in various applications such as recessed, undercabinet, above the cabinet, or inside glass-front cabinets.
Adding hanging fixtures and dimmers to a kitchen with recessed can lighting provides focal points in the room and flexibility to adjust lighting levels to fit what you’re doing. PhoTo cou RTESy oF NoRA LIghTINg

Ceiling fans add coolness to the look and feel of a home.
hen the mercury rises and the humidity is high, it’s hard to remain comfortable inW side your home without running up a huge power bill. You don’t necessarily need to upgrade to a more powerful air-conditioning unit, you may just need some to install ceiling fans in each living space. If you haven’t upgraded ceiling fans in the past eight years or so, the American Lighting Association (ALA) says you’re missing out on saving even more money because many of today’s fan models are more efficient. “A ceiling fan can save homeowners as much as 40 percent on their air-conditioning bills by creating a breeze that makes the ambiP h o t o c o u R t e s Y FA n I M At I o n A n d A M e R I c A n L I g h t I n g A s s o c I At I o n

ent temperature feel seven or eight degrees cooler than it actually is,” says John Moody, a spokesman for ceiling fan manufacturer Fanimation. “You can set your thermostat at 80 degrees, and it will feel like it is set at 72 degrees. ... When used in conjunction with an air conditioner, a ceiling fan can lower energy costs because you can now set the thermostat of your air conditioner at a higher temperature.” Joe Rey-Barreau, education consultant for the ALA, says ceiling fans have become popular additions for almost every room where people remain for long periods of time.

For large homes, installing ceiling fans in laundry rooms and even closets is becoming more common. “While those may seem like unusual locations, having air circulation in those environments helps prevent staleness,” says Bethany Pirtle of Emerson Ceiling Fans. “Master bathrooms are also a perfect place for smaller ceiling fans, because hair dryers and steam showers can make a bathroom hot and sticky. A smallspan fan can quickly and efficiently add comfort.” Another factor in determining where to install a ceiling fan is the product’s UL listing. There are three basic UL-listed ratings for indoor, damp and wet locations. Fans that are rated only for indoors should not be used outside – even if the area is mostly covered. “Moisture and humidity can affect both the performance of the motor and the stability of the blades,” ReyBarreau says. “Fans that are rated for damp locations can be used either indoors or outside in a setting where they are in a protected environment such as a porch.” Wet-rated fans can be installed outdoors in situations where they will be in direct contact with water, such as in gazebos or mounted above a patio on the underside of a deck. “The popularity of outdoor living environments has meant bringing along all of the amenities that make the inside so comfortable,” Pirtle says. She suggests selecting a wet location-rated ceiling fan with a light kit to provide mood lighting when enjoying the outdoor area after dusk.
Besides greater efficiency, the second-most-improved aspect of modern ceiling fans is the wide variety. “Fan design has come a long way since the 1970s,” says Tom Frampton of Fanimation. “You can now select a contemporary model with clean, understated lines meant to blend into your decor for a ‘less is more’ approach, or step out and select a model that serves as a focal point.” Rey-Barreau adds, “The range ... is without boundaries. They have become as much a decorative element in a space as a decorative lighting fixture [and can] support and enhance the design style of the furniture.” Pirtle says the sky (read: the ceiling) is the limit when it comes to aesthetics. “Every style you can imagine is available in a ceiling fan,” she says. “Over the last 20 years, there has really been a shift from viewing the ceiling fan as an appliance to more of a home decor item. People care about how their furniture and lighting define their space, and now more than ever, there are decorative and viable solutions in ceiling fans as well.” There is a caveat. As fans have become more stylish, the decision of which model to buy is often based on its looks alone. “This could result in selecting a fan that may not be properly suited to serve the functional needs of a space,” Rey-Barreau says. “There are a number of other issues that should be considered when selecting a fan that is aesthetically pleasing plus functional and practical.”

rganizing your living area gives you a fresh perspective on life. You can find O things more easily, your working surfaces are clear and your mind can focus on tasks or relax without anxiety during leisure hours. Start by clearing clutter (get rid of things you no longer use) and putting the things you want and need where you can always find them. Allan Young, CEO and co-founder of ShelfGenie, which designs, builds and installs glide-out shelving systems for existing cabinets, suggests starting in the kitchen, and offers some tips for quick organization projects. Since the kitchen often is the most heavily used room in a home, it makes sense to begin your organization project here. Start with the drawers, and make the most frequently used items the most accessible. Food prep tools should be stored in the drawer near the largest available kitchen workspace, and cooking utensils should be stored near the stove. Storage wraps, tin foil and storage containers should be placed in a drawer near the fridge. Everyday items like plates and glasses should be within reach at all times, while those used less often — like a juicer, bread maker or food processor—can be kept in less convenient places. Store drinking glasses in a row, so it’s clear where they belong. Pots and pans should be stored one inside another to optimize space, Young says. And he recommends ShelfGenie’s page 73

Adding some accessible shelving in the bottom of a china hutch is a smart way to get toys and games out of sight, but still close at hand.

glide-out shelves and drawers, which can be used in cabinets throughout the home and in the pantry for food storage. Organize boxed dry goods by type, placing cereals together; rice, beans and pasta together, snack foods in one place, etc. Store sugar, flour, and other commonly used staples in see-through plastic bins with labels. Organize canned items by type. Clutter in your bedroom can detract from the room’s appearance and make what should be a clean and peaceful room feel sloppy and chaotic. Put nightstand clutter — medications, TV remotes,
tissue boxes and other unsightly things — into the drawers on your nightstand. Consider investing in a nightstand with multiple drawers for easy storage and access, or install a movable shelf underneath your existing one. The shelf will keep items concealed during the daytime but easy to obtain when you need them. It’s also a great place to keep magazines and books. Dresser drawers are a project all their own. Get rid of anything you haven’t worn in the past two years, then start organizing. Group all the clothes in your dresser by type — jeans, pajamas, undergarments — and dedicate a drawer to each type. garments or jewelry, try drawer dividers or inserts, which can be customized to your drawer. Organize closets by ridding them of shoes and apparel you no longer wear, and organizing racks by type of clothing, then color. Under the bed is a good place for storing out-of-season. Use storage bins with labels or vacuumseal bags to maximize space. Your bedroom closet is one place in which getting some help to design a closet plan may be worth the time and money. Organizers, space planners, architects, designers and closet makers can give you a dream closet where there’s a place for everything, and everything is in its place. Not only does it give you a sense of serenity, but it’s faster and less stressful to assemble an outfit every day, and your clothes will look better longer because they aren’t stuffed into crowded spaces. The bathroom accumulates clutter faster than any other room in the house. That’s because it’s the smallest space, and if you or someone in your family uses lots of products — shampoos, styling gel, deodorant, hair dryers, lotions, razors — they can make a big mess. Throw out old products, then put the remainder in a wire shower caddy inside the tub/shower. Organize the drawers with the things you use daily in the front, and less-used items in the back. Again, you can buy drawer separators to customize your space. Another way to keep the bathroom tidy is adding a double-curved shower rod from Moen (available at Bed Bath and

Beyond), and placing your shower curtains on the inside only. The curved design provides another 5 inches of elbow room inside the shower. You also can use Sshaped shower rod hooks to keep items such as pajamas, loofahs or shaving kits off the floor and within arms’ reach. If your vanity space is limited, use wall shelves and decorative baskets or jars to hold the things you want accessible. You also can use a chest as a place to store towels and other bath items. Take that idea into other living areas, including the dining room, where sliding drawers or shelves behind the solid lower doors of a china cabinet can hide games and toys while the top is used for displaying china or mementos. The foyer usually is a very high-traffic area and can quickly become a place where keys, mail, shoes, coats, coffee cups and other forms of clutter accumulate. Keep track of your keys by always leaving them in the same place when you walk in the door every day. Put a small dish on a side table close to the entryway and develop the habit of always putting keys in that one spot. Sometimes mail can get lost in a sea of clutter, but a mail organizer placed near the entryway reminds family members to check for letters and bills.
