The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus parades Jan. 28

AVATARLICIOUSISHARDTOMISS,EVEN AMONGTHEMORETHAN110SUBKREWES that will marchonSaturday, Jan.28, in this year’s Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus parade. Inspiredbythe movie“Avatar,” the all-women subkrewe’s members costumeinbluebodysuits and makeupand marchwiththeir signature contraption, alighted rolling platform with astripperpole They’vecomealongway from theirstart in 2014

“Westarted with four participants and areally wonkyshoppingcart with atinyspeaker in it,and we were pathetic, but we hadthe time of our lives,”saysfounderNiki Wilson.

She and afriendhad marched the year before as Fembotsfromthe Austin Powers movies. And though she’sgenerally afan of sci-fiand the other fandomsthatfill thekrewe, therewas morethatattracted her to Chewbacchus.

“Wefellinlove with homemade throws, and thecontraptionshad me hooked,” shesays. Thekrewe callsany motorizedornonmotorized vehiclea“contraption,”and the parade’sminifloat armadaincludes theBar2-D2 and theSpace Farce, featuringagiant UFOhovering over areplica of downtown NewOrleans

Fortheir first parade,Avatarlicious membersboughtcostumesonline and attached glittersheetsand light-upwands to theshopping cart. But within acouple years, they upgraded theirbodysuits, started usingwater-activated powdered makeup forfullskin coverage and added thestripperpole contraption.

“I wouldn’tsay anyone in our krewe is specifically learningstripper pole moves,”Wilsonsays. “At theend of theparade, beforewe head offtothe Chewbacchanal, there’salwayssomebody— usually from another subkrewe —who comesupand says,‘IknowwhatI am doing. CanIget up there?’”

Thenameofthe overall kreweis themashupofBacchus, the godof wine, and Star Wars’ Chewbacca. At theheart of thekrewe is theCult of theSacredDrunkenWookiee, and thereare numerous Star Warsinspiredgroups, includingthe dance troupe TheLeijorettes, the Death Star Steppers and the610 Wampas, ahybridofayeti-like snow creature from Star Wars andthe outfits of NewOrleans’ 610 Stompers Therealso aregroupsdedicated to “StarTrek,”“Doctor Who,” “E.T.,”

“Ghostbusters,”“Menin Black” and“Sharknado.” Onegroup dresses like kingcakebabies. The Aerial SpaceSquad are aerialists whoenjoy cosplay. TheIntergalactic Realtors Association create stunning aliencostumes.

WomenofWakandais oneofthe more recent additions.Wankeeta Jackson formed the groupfollowing the popularity of theoriginal “Black Panther” movie. Many members designcostumesbased on thefilm’sDoraMilaje warriors, but thegroup also mixes in other elements.Last year it incorporated references to thehorror drama“LovecraftCountry” and introduced“Beyond C’est,” acontraption featuringthe glittery figure of awoman with alarge Afro. The groupalso has arolling spacecraft DJ booth

This year, the group’stheme is “The Ancestral Queen,”which ties into thesecond movie, “Black Panther:WakandaForever.” The members’ mostly hand-made throws include earrings andbracelets, and thegroup will unveil anew artpiece during theparade,Jackson says Some groups have created theirown mythologies.Brennan Steele startedthe Space Vikings as aHalloween groupcostume. He wanted to do Vikings butwitha distinguishing theme. TheSpace Vikings thus appear in furs, horned helmetsand other gear, all in whites, metallicand shining colors from beingsun bleachedontheir voyages across thegalaxy.

Steele likedthe idea and thegroup started marchinginChewbacchus in 2014.Healso used to work with a localfloat buildingcompany, andhe createdthe Vikings’ massive bison float. This year,he’saddingaflatbed attachmentfor thesubkrewetoadd aspeaker.Thatalso will help krewe membersstashtheir throws and other items. Signature throws include truckerhatsand vinylstickers.

Steele puts hisfloat-buildingskills to work with other krewes, includingaKrewe du Vieuxsubkrewe. He haskeptthe SpaceVikings accessible, withsuggested donation dues of $10and membership available viathe group’sFacebook page.

Members of variousChewbacchus subkreweshave representedthe krewe in other parades, including Krewe of OAK’sMid-Summer Mardi Gras, the SouthernDecadence parade and NewOrleans Pride parade.Thereare annual events, includinganAlien BeachParty held at theDrifter Hotel.

Aweek before theparade, the groupholds athrow swap,so subkrewe members cantrade handmade throws with groups they won’t be closetointhe parade lineup. Forthisyear’sevent at UrbanSouth Brewery, thebrewery createdChewy Granola,a peanut butter chocolate oatmealstout available in limitedquantity.

This year, the krewealso is adding apermanentmonument. Ashrine to theSacredDrunkenWookieewill be installedatthe Saturn Bar, where plans forthe kreweoriginally were hatched. It looks like astone altar with aWookieecarving andother iconography in thecenter.

Saturn Baralso is near thebeginning of theparadeatSt. Claude and Franklinavenues. The parade begins at 7p.m.Saturday,and theroute turnsonElysian Fields and proceeds across theFrench QuarteronDecaturStreet. CARLWEATHERSHATESTHEWORD

“LIKE.” Youknow, themostpopularfiller word forthe absenceof constructive vocabulary.Atleast it’s thewordWeatherscorrected me on severaltimes when I wasspeaking.

“When yousay, you know, ‘like this’or, youknow, sometimes when ‘likepeople do,’ what does that mean?” says Weathers, 74 “‘Like’? Does it mean anything? If youdropthatwordfromyour vocabulary you’ll be so much clearerabout what you’re saying and asking.”

TheJeffersonParishSheriff’s Office hasbeen illegally destroying deputies’ disciplinary recordsfor at least 10 years, Verite News reported. The practice makesitmoredifficult to hold errant deputies accountable. JPSO is required to seek approval from theState Archivesbeforedestroying public records, butthatoffice hasnodisposalrequests on file from JPSO from the last decade.

Scifinerds andvarious assortedother fandomshad gathered together earlier this month in theErnest N. He maybeadept at playing other worldlycharacters, but in person, Weathersisremarkably down to earthand feelsalmost familiar, likeyourwiseuncle at thecrawfishboil, readytodish outlifeadviceatamoment’s

notice.Likegetting rid of unnecessarywords like, well, “like.” Sure,“like”makes sensewhen you’re comparingtwo things —“This is like this, orthisislike that”or“Apollo CreedislikeDillon from Predator, exceptwithoutthe CIAclearance.”‘Like’also works when talkingaboutamatterof taste:“Iliketoeat redbeans.” Otherwise,Weathersiskinda right:Itserveswelltosimplyomit thewordfromyourvocabulary Butafter listening back to our tape,I thoughtWeatherssaid “you know” toomuch. Buthey Imet Weathers, perhapsNew Orleans’ most famous native son in Hollywood, onthe first day of theexpo, when only badest batchesofgeeks were clamoring to getpicturesand autographs of theirfavorite celebrities.Even so, enthusiasm wafted through theair as Jedi and Mandalorians stood in line to meet Weathers Dressed allinblue, Weathers kindly signed autographs with all theair of abelovedprincemeetinghis subjects.

If you’ve neverbeentoa“con” asthey’re called, well, they’rea whole thing. On anygiven weekend, somewhereinthe country there’sprobablyafan convention of some sort, drawing fans of anime, comicbooks,sci-fi, fantasyand gamingofvarious kinds.

Oneofthe biggestparts of anycon are celebrity appearances— with “celebrity”running thegamutfrom majorstars with decadesofexperience, likeWeathers, to arandom redshirt whodidn’tdie during an episode of Star Trek.

Weathersisbestknown forhis roles in “Rocky”asApolloCreed, Dillon in “Predator,”ActionJackson in theblaxploitation film “Action Jackson,”and he is nowapartofthe most famous media franchise ever: Star Wars,asGreef Kargain“The Mandalorian.”He’salso an accomplished director, with dozens of TV episodes under hisbelt, including “The Mandalorian,”which premieres itsthird season on March1 Meanwhile, hereIwas, getting grammar lessons from oneofthe currentstars of Star Wars.

“Ittakes alittlebit of focus,” Weatherssaysabout riddingyourself of filler words. “Soonceyou’vedone those things —you know— onceyou know what you’re really trying to ask, whydoyou have to saylike?”

I’dbrought along my stuffed WookieeDaveed,thinkingit’d bringWeatherssomecomfort.But when Iintroducedthem,Weathers

seemed scared.“You’re frightening me now, Samarah,”Weatherssays. “Lord, help us.”

Theman runs NevarroCityand he can’thandle abite-sizedWookiee? Love is love.Hometravels in the heart. Food is heavenly. Theseare theCredo of UncleCarl.

Alongside football, acting, and directing,Weathersenjoysthe manyflavors that bless theculinary realm. ComingfromNew Orleans, thoseflavors aremorethanflavors —they’re historiesinyourmouth From theurgetoquellhunger witha good bowl of redbeans to grandma’sfall-off-the-bone-good chicken, the food of ourhistory has away of sticking withusall.Evenin keto-crazedHollywood

“I’d eatfilégumbo till thecows come home,” Weathers says.“Love it.Love it.Love it.Loveit. Seafood —goodGod —all dayevery day. Rawoysters.Ijust hadsomelast night. Idon’t care whereI’vetraveled in theworld —certainlyinthis country— thebest oysters, in my mind, are rightherecomingout of theGulf. Ilove good food.”

Weatherssayshis roles don’t requiremuchinfluence from his

NewOrleans background, but as an actor, artist andhuman being, he findsithardtoescape theenvironmenthegrewupin.

“It’sinevitablethatit’sinmysoul,” Weathers says wistfully.“[New Orleans] goes with me no matter whereIam. AndI cook,soIhaveto getinthere everyonceinawhile, and,you know, throwdowntoo.”

Weathers’ love foracting bloomed in NewOrleans. His first acting role waswritten by hisprimaryschoolteacher

He laterfellinlove with the gridiron, playing footballatSt. Augustineinhighschoolonscholarship, and then in college playing at SanDiego StateUniversityinthe late ‘60s.Weathersplayedpro ball until1974. Soon he’d be cast in what wouldbecomeone of theclassic franchises in moviehistory:“Rocky.”

Alongside hisactingcareer, Weathers developeda passionfor beingbehindthe camera as well and says he lovesacting and directing, though he acknowledgeshe’s becomeincreasinglyattracted to directing.“Love is love,” Weathers says.“Ienjoy doingboth. But Iam drawnmoretodirecting because

of thechallenge.Because of theartistry. Becauseofthe involvementin everyaspectofwhateverthe movie or televisionshowis.”

Now, Weathers is ahousehold namefor awhole newgeneration of sci-filovers,thanks to “The Mandalorian.”

“I cansay this: I’mgoingtobeinit,” says Weathers when Iask himabout “The Mandalorian” season three. “I cansay Idirectedanepisode of it Ican sayit’sgoingtobeslammin’, it’s goingtolook bigger than the other seasonsdid. And if you’re not entertained,we’re coming afteryou.”

Now, Ihadn’t heardthe term“slammin’”inthatcontext before, but I wasquick to figure outthatitwas a synonym forawesome or cool

“I’veactually neverheard [slammin’]usedinthatway. But I understand what youmean,”I say. Andjust like that, the padawan had becomethe master, and it was time formetoteach athing or two to UncleCarl. “Wesay it’s fire. It’s fire,” Iexplained “Okay. Well thereyago. It’s gonna be fire.Right?” UncleCarlsaid.

INRECENTWEEKS, WE’VESEENTHREE INSTANCES in New Orleansthat illuminatedthe question of what, and when, grace is due to someone who’sbrokenthe public faith: Irvin Mayfield’s early releasefromprison; PJ Morton’s fumbling of theBuddy Bolden house rehab;and the city’s handling of theWisner Trust

In hindsight,it’s clearthatdespite hisenormous talent and widespread acclaim, Mayfield formany yearssought validation.Whatelse explains his systematic theftof$1.3millionin libraryfoundationfunds to pay forfleetingsymbols of vanity such as asolid goldtrumpetora nightatCarnegie Hall?

Hubris, perhaps. Like Icarus, Mayfield flew tooclose to the sun—and came crashingdown. He ultimately pleadedguiltyto onecount of fraud and received an 18-monthprisonsentence.

Upon hisrelease, Mayfield quickly landedagig playingthe Zulu SocialAid and Pleasure Club’s annual LundiGrasfestival Thisishow it should be. Mayfield did histimeand now someonewants to hire him whichisthe very rehabilitative foundation upon whichour justice system, nomatterhow broken it maybeattimes, rests. While Mayfield hasbenefitedfromhis celebrity, we’d like to seemore incarcerated people treatedthis way, notless.Wehopemorepeopleremember thegrace shown to Mayfield thenexttimethey’re decidinghow to treatsomeone who’sgonethrough this country’s brutaland oftentimes unfair criminal justicesystem.

Meanwhile, Gambit’s Kaylee Poche’sstory on thefailure of another Grammy winner,PJ Morton, and hisfamily to make goodontheir promise to turn jazz pioneerBuddyBolden’s house into amuseumisasad call to arms forjazzlovers everywhere. Afteryears of theMortonfamily’s mega-church(which owns the property)failing to make significant progress toward rehabbing

Bolden’s dilapidated home, the city movedtosellthe property at auction.Thatcould have put theblighted property on theroad to restoration. Before that could happen, however, the Morton family paid theliens and forestalledthe auction City Hall andthe peopleofNew Orleanshave repeatedly shown gracetothe Morton family, which they were due forpromising to restoreBolden’shome. Butit’s nowpasttimefor theMortons to do theright thing or letthe propertygo. Otherwise, the city should move —again —totake theproperty and sell it to a buyerwho will respectits historicalsignificance.

As forthe Wisner Trust, the Wisner heirsand beneficiaries should acknowledge what Mayor LaToya Cantrell seemstohave accepted —the gravytrain is over On Jan.12, themayor’s legal team effectivelythrew in thetowelina legaldispute withthe City Council overownership of thecentury-old trust, which expired in 2014 and passed (inits entirety)tothe city.Inexplicably, Cantrell and herpredecessor,Mitch Landrieu, agreed to continue giving the heirsand beneficiaries acut of the trust’s proceeds.Bynow, thatact of gracemoreresemblesacting irresponsibly. TheWisner heirs and beneficiariesshould follow themayor’sleadand gracefully bowout

THESURESTSIGNTHAT APOLITICALPARTY’S REACHEXCEEDSITS

GRASP is seeing its luminariesturnon each other at the onsetofabig election.Suchisthe fate of today’sLouisiana Republican Party.

TheLAGOP’s problemisthata handfulofinsidershave already anointedstate Attorney GeneralJeff Landry as theparty’s “official” candidate forgovernor in the fall elections, but they can’tconvince other GOPgubernatorial aspirants to standdown—nor theother 99.99% of theparty faithfultoshut up andfallinline.

Nowthe mullahsare aghast that other prominentRepublicansare raisinghellabout notbeing invited to the, um,party Normally,I’d saythe outsiders arepissedtheydidn’tget the memo —but in this case, theydid getthe memo… and they hatedit.

ThememoinquestionisaJan 16 screedonthe LAGOPwebsite by stateparty chairLouis Gurvich, whoranks amongLandry’sbiggest supporters.“Thetheme of today’s articleisUNITY,” Gurvich began.

Gurvichthenproceeded to insult theother two(so far)announced Republican candidates —state Treasurer John Schroder and state Sen.SharonHewitt— dismissively describing them as “eachpolling at aboutone percent.”

Notcontent to diss the announced GOPcandidates, Gurvich turned hiscondescension to U.S. Rep. Garret GravesofBaton Rouge, whohasn’tannouncedbut hasgottena lotofencouragement from Republicansand Democrats alikewho prefer “ABL”(Anybody ButLandry)for governor

“I will frankly admit that Ilike Garret Graves,”Gurvich wrote—a sure signhe’sabouttobreak outa rustyfillet knife. He then devoted more than 500words to ahamfistedattempttodissuadeGraves from running —likewiseasuresign that Team Landry is terrifiedofa Gravescandidacy Gurvich concludes, “The LAGOP hasalreadyunitedbehindJeff

Landry …Why change allthatfor the sake of onecongressman’s ego?”

Wow. Talk about astudy in un-self-awareness

First of all, theLAGOP is far from “united”behindLandry, who is not onlya far-right whack-a-doodle butalso anotorious dumbass.

Second, howdoesbashing threeof thestate’s topRepublican officials buildparty unity?

Republicansnot in Landry’s camp were blunt Lt.Gov.Billy Nungesser, who bowedout of theracethe same daySchroderannounced, called Gurvich“an embarrassment.”

BatonRouge businessman and GOPdonor RichardLipsey called Gurvich’s letter a“pitifuldiatribe” and theparty insiders whoanointed Landry “incompetent.”Lipsey wrote in hisown letter,“This is thesame groupresponsible forlosing thelast tworaces forgovernor.”

WWLRadio host and former JeffersonParishSheriffNewell

Normand called Gurvich’sattacks on Graves“laughable”and said the wayGurvich achieves unityis“how Putindoesit.”

GALACTIC’SJANUARY HASBEENALITTLE

BUSY.Within thefirst threeweeksof2023, theNew Orleansfunk band has traveledto Cuba, releasedanew, collaboration-filled EP andisonits way to NewYorkCityfor afive-nightresidency at theBlueNote jazz club.

But, despitehaving 10-showslined up at thestoried Greenwich Villagevenue, theresidency is giving Galactic achance to do somethingalittledifferent on theroad, says bassistRobert Mercurio:tojust staystill andrelax foraminute.

“We’venever donethismany nights in arow, and we rarely —if never— have playedasetting like this,thissit-down, smallclub,”says Mercurio, whose band is closing in on close to 30 yearsofconsistent touring. “Insteadofdoingabig East Coast tour, wesaid, let’s camp out in NewYorkand kind of do adifferent approach.Sowhen this offer came along, the guys were excited aboutit.”

“I thinkcomingout of thepandemicwas hardfor alot of bands, we gota little moreusedtobeing home,” he adds.“We did anational tour in 2022,but theideaofnot beingawayasmuchisappealing to everybody[in theband].”

At theBlueNote, Galactic Mercurio, saxophonistBen Ellman, drummer StantonMoore, guitarist JeffreyRainesand keyboardist RichardVogel —along with their go-tosingerAnjelika “Jelly”Joseph and trumpeterEricGordonwill gettodig alittledeeper into their catalogue.Mercurio says they’lltap into material that maynot work infront of the1,000-personrock clubsGalacticisusedtoplaying butcould land in the200-seatBlue Note.Italso maynot be thesame mixofjazzfunkthe groupplays at Tipitina’s, which theband owns Andeachnight willfeature aguest performer: renowned saxophonist JamesCarter, pedal steelguitarist Robert Randolph, rapper and singer Matisyahuand trumpeterand fellow NewOrleanian Nicholas Payton

It isn’tnewsthatGalacticrelishes collaboration, bothliveand when recording. Theband’s nearly 30 yearsofmaterialisfilled withguest

artists, particularly vocalistslike Macy Gray,Big Freedia, Mavis Staples, John Boutte,Maggie Koerner,Jelly Joseph andtheir longtime frontman thelate Theryl DeClouet.

Andtheir newEP“Tchompitoulas” is no exception. Thefunky, eclectic six-song recording wasreleased on Jan.20. AlongwithJosephand Gordon, the EP featuresAfroCuban musicianCimafunk—who hasrecentlybeen building aNew Orleansfanbase —trombonistand singer Glen DavidAndrews and rapper EricBiddines.

“Galactic’s collaborativespirit,it always leadstoreally greatfriendshipsand connections,”Mercurio says.“It justkindofgetsusout of ourbubble.”

Earlier this month,Cimafunk hosted Galactic,Mannie Fresh, TromboneShortyand studentmusiciansfromthe Trombone Shorty Foundation fora five-day cultural exchange in Cuba.Itwas asimilar trip to afruitfulexchangein2019 withTank and theBangas,Trombone Shorty andThe SoulRebels

In Cuba,Galacticmet withmusiciansfromthe country, worked withschoolkidsjust beginningto learnaninstrumentand playeda rooftopshowinold Havana.“It was notprobablyavenuewe’dnormally playbecause it wassmallspace on this rooftop, butman, itfeltmagical,”Mercurio says

In February,Galacticplays the JamCruise19and will be back in NewOrleans forshows at Tipitina’s on Feb. 18 andFeb.20. Find more information andtheir newEP at galacticfunk.com.
