Majestic, fun, and most of all unique. These are the 3 adjectives we would use to describe Pohaku, the new attraction added in 2022 in the Tuscan waterpark Acqua Village Water Parks Cecina. Pohakuu is only the latest development of a park that has consistently enhanced its lineup and its Hawaiian theme, season after season and especially in the last 5 to 6 years, to the point of being, today, one of the best water theme parks in Italy and in Europe. To get to know Pohaku better, we spoke with Marcello Padroni, founder and owner of the Acqua Village group, which includes the park in Cecina and a second one, also in Tuscany, facing the Elba Island, called Acqua Village Water Parks Follonica.

Imponente, divertentissimo e soprattutto unico. Sono questi gli aggettivi che possono descrivere Pohaku, l’attrazione novità 2022 all’Acqua Village Water Parks Cecina: un nuovo tassello nell’opera di sviluppo di questo parco acquatico toscano, che stagione dopo stagione – e particolarmente negli ultimi cinque-sei anni – ha arricchito in modo importante la sua offerta e la sua tematizzazione hawaiana, posizionandosi così oggi come uno dei migliori esempi di water theme park a livello italiano ed europeo. Per scoprire meglio Pohaku abbiamo incontrato Marcello Padroni, fondatore e proprietario del gruppo Acqua Village, che comprende il parco di Cecina ed anche – sempre in Toscana, ma di fronte all’isola d’Elba - l’Acqua Village Water Parks Follonica.

Marcello, first of all: where does this name come from? “Pohaku means ‘stone’ in Hawaiian, and as you can see our slide, with its dark gray and its shape, looks like it really is made of stone. It is a 6-lane slide, and its strong theming is what makes it special.” Who created it? “The concept was by our own Acqua Village Studio together with Ozlab Funfactory, whereas for its production we chose Polin Waterparks, a leader of the industry in Europe and the second manufacturer worldwide for this kind of attraction. We already had quite a close relationship with that company because they had worked on other major slides in our parks. The scenery, on the other hand, is the work of a sculptor, Raffaele Lattuada of Ral Arte, from the starting tower, looking like a Hawaiian hut, to the finish gate, in Tiki style.” When did Pohaku open to visitors? “On June 20th, and the audience immediately loved it to bits. The response is such that we are even recording a growth in the number of visitors. As I always tell my colleagues and

Marcello, innanzitutto perché questo nome? “Pohaku significa ‘pietra’ in lingua hawaiana e come può notare lo scivolo, col suo colore grigio scuro e le sue forme, sembra proprio fatto di questo materiale. È un multipista a sei corsie, reso originale dalla forte tematizzazione”. Chi l’ha fatto? “L’ideazione è del nostro Acqua Village Studio con la collaborazione di Ozlab Funfactory, mentre per la realizzazione dello scivolo ci siamo affidati a Polin Waterparks, azienda leader in Europa e seconda al mondo per questo genere di attrazione. Con loro avevamo avuto anche in passato un rapporto abbastanza stretto per altri importanti scivoli dei nostri parchi. La scenografia, invece, è opera dello scultore Raffaele Lattuada di Ral Arte: dalla torretta di partenza che è una capanna hawaiana fino al portale d’arrivo in stile Tiki”. Quando avete inaugurato Pohaku? “Il 20 giugno scorso e da subito è piaciuto moltissimo al pubblico. La risposta è tale che ci sta portando anche un incremento degli ingressi. Come dico sempre

Lo scivolo è alto 11m e lungo 60m. Le corsie ondulate vengono percorse toccando i 30km/h. La tematizzazione è ispirata alle isole Hawaii e alla sua cultura, come ricordano le grandi sculture raffiguranti Tiki.

my employees, if you want a park to keep being attractive, and especially with a waterpark, you need to regularly add something new – and something original at that. That’s how you attract visitors, and also repeat business from people who have already visited.” Why a multi-lane slide? “This attraction is suitable for everyone, it’s extremely safe, and it’s fun. Moreover, having 6 lanes allows for a constant flow of people, without long queues either on the stairs or on the ground.” What will 2023 bring to your park? “We are currently in the planning phase for a few new, major investments for the Acqua Village group, with projects for both our parks, in Cecina and in Follonica. Let’s talk again next year and I will tell you everything about that.” n

con i miei colleghi e collaboratori, introdurre regolarmente delle novità - e novità che siano originali - è essenziale per rendere attrattivo un parco, soprattutto se acquatico. È così che si richiamano visitatori, anche quelli che nella struttura ci sono già stati”. Perché un multipista? “È un’attrazione adatta a tutti, estremamente sicura e che diverte. Il fatto poi di avere sei corsie ci permette di avere un flusso continuo di persone, ma senza grosse file né sulle scale né in attesa a terra”. Il 2023 cosa porterà al parco? “Siamo in una fase di progettazione per nuovi importanti investimenti del gruppo Acqua Village sia nel parco di Cecina che in quello di Follonica. Appuntamento quindi al prossimo anno per raccontarvi tutte le novità”.

SWITCHBACK™ AND 3 OTHER HEART-PUMPING WATER ATTRACTIONS BY PROSLIDE DEBUT IN TEXAS

SwitchBACK™, the newest water ride by Canadian manufacturer ProSlide, just made its world debut a few days ago in the USA, at both Splashway Waterpark & Campground in Texas and Cullman Wellness and Aquatic Center in Alabama. Powered by patented TornadoWAVE® technology, this latest ProSlide innovation transforms the ride path by creating a quick change in direction that keeps riders on their toes. With riders in a face-to-face configuration, experiencing fast up and down oscillations, a SwitchBACK™ creates a dynamic and interactive ride. Splashway’s SwitchBACK™, called The Patriot, was installed alongside 3 other ProSlide water rides, the first being Texas Twist, a TurboTWISTER speed tubing slide that sends riders through back-to-back turns, and high-banking curves, featuring narrow loops and twisting tunnels for a truly thrilling ride. A SuperLOOP® model was also installed. Called Summit Plummet, this is a looping speed slide complete with a SkyBOX drop launch system: riders will wait until the floor drops from under them, sending them plunging into the slide, with G-force glueing them to the slide walls for an exhilarating experience from start to finish. Last but not least, the brand new Blueper Looper is a PIPELine water slide launching riders into an enclosed flume in 1 or 2-person tubes and sending them whizzing through a mix of back-to-back curves, drops and vortex loops.

INAUGURATI IN TEXAS SWITCHBACK™ ED ALTRE 3 ATTRAZIONI ADRENALINICHE DI PROSLIDE

SwitchBACK™, la nuovissima water ride del produttore canadese ProSlide, ha fatto il suo debutto mondiale pochi giorni fa negli Stati Uniti, in ben due parchi: lo Splashway Waterpark & Campground in Texas e il Cullman Wellness and Aquatic Center nell’Alabama. Alimentata dalla tecnologia TornadoWAVE® (un brevetto di ProSlide), questo scivolo ha un percorso vivacissimo con rapidi cambi di direzione che tengono in tensione i rider sistemati sui gommoni a due a due, uno di fronte all’altro. Le oscillazioni sono veloci e fanno andare avanti e indietro, dando vita a un percorso dinamico e interattivo. Lo SwitchBACK™ dello Splashway, a cui è stato dato il nome di The Patriot, è stato installato insieme ad altri tre scivoli nuovi, sempre di ProSlide. Il primo è Texas Twist, uno scivolo veloce, modello TurboTWISTER, che viene percorso su gommoni e che prevede un continuo di curve, anche del tipo a forte inclinazione, loop stretti e tratti a canale chiuso con torsioni per un’esperienza davvero emozionante. Altro scivolo nuovo installato è un SuperLOOP® . Summit Plummet è uno scivolo veloce con loop dotato del sistema di lancio a caduta SkyBOX: alla partenza, il pavimento sotto ai piedi dei rider si apre, facendoli precipitare dentro lo scivolo, con la forza G che li incolla alle pareti per un’esperienza esaltante dall'inizio alla fine. Ultimo ma non meno importante, è il nuovo Blueper Looper, uno PIPELine che lancia i rider in un canale chiuso a bordo di gommoni a uno o due posti dove sfrecciano attraverso un mix di curve consecutive, drop e loop vorticosi.

WORLD DEBUT OF BLASTERANGO DUELING

RIDE IN TENNESSEE / Now in its third season, Soaky Mountain Waterpark in Tennessee has recently added a first-of-its-kind dueling watercoaster, The Edge. It spans two football fields in length and fuses together WhiteWater’s Master Blaster water coaster and their iconic Boomerango. A 21-meter tower is home to the new slides. On it, double tubes sit side by side, each in their own assigned lane. When the light turns green they will be propelled down a 3-story mega drop that leads to the first valley of the ride. Then, they will be quickly blasted up a hill and into a section featuring a kaleidoscope of colors. “Riders are sure to be mesmerized by the coaster’s AquaLucent rings (colorful circles) designed into the tube segments,” explains Dave Andrews, the park’s general manager. “The distance between the rings will get closer and closer, giving riders an appearance of acceleration before they are surprised to see their competitors again as they are dropped into another heart-pounding drop.” A second uphill blast will take riders into another enclosed tube segment, where this time they will be awed by colorful, laser-like AquaLucent stripes. These stripes will start longer, and then become shorter and shorter, giving a sense of sci-fi speed. When the riders shoot out of their tube, they will see not one, but 2 imposing translucent Boomerango walls ahead of them, before dropping to the base of the wall, feeling extreme Gs. As the momentum takes the riders up the parallel walls, they will be able to see their competitors as they feel a sense of weightlessness before sliding back down. As a finishing touch, the riders will go over a zero-G hump to the end of the ride, with the finish line stacked with lights and effects to indicate who is the winner.

DEBUTTO MONDIALE NEL TENNESSEE DELLA DUELING WATER RIDE

BLASTERANGO / Giunto alla sua terza stagione, il Soaky Mountain Waterpark nel Tennessee ha recentemente aggiunto un watercoaster del tipo dueling unico nel suo genere, The Edge. Ha una lunghezza pari a due campi da calcio ed è la fusione di due attrazioni di WhiteWater: il water coaster Master Blaster e il loro iconico Boomerango. I due nuovi scivoli partono da una torretta alta 21m. Due gommoni biposto sono uno a fianco all’altro, ognuno nella sua corsia. Quando la luce che dà il via all’esperienza diventa verde, vengono spinti giù per un megadrop alto come un palazzo di tre piani che conduce alla prima ‘valle’. Da lì risalgono a gran velocità su per una collinetta ed entrano in una sezione caratterizzata da un caleidoscopio di colori. “I rider rimarranno sicuramente ipnotizzati dai cerchi colorati AquaLucent del watercoaster in questa sezione chiusa del canale”, spiega Dave Andrews, direttore generale del parco. “I cerchi si faranno via via più vicini tra loro, dando ai rider l’impressione di accelerare prima di rivedere con grande sorpresa, una volta usciti dal tratto a canale chiuso, i loro ‘avversari’ mentre affrontano un altro drop al cardiopalma”. Dopo il drop, ecco un secondo tratto ascendente e l’ingresso in un’altra sezione a canale chiuso, che stavolta li stupirà con raggi colorati AquaLucent simili a laser. Queste fasce all’inizio lunghe diventeranno poi sempre più corte, dando la sensazione di una velocità estrema. Usciti dal tratto chiuso, i rider si troveranno davanti non uno, ma due imponenti muri traslucidi Boomerango, per poi cadere alla base della loro parete, sperimentando un’estrema forza G. Lanciati su per i muri paralleli, saranno in grado di vedere gli avversari mentre provano un senso di assenza di gravità per poi riscivolare verso il basso. Come tocco finale, supereranno una gobba a zero G e arriveranno così al traguardo, che attraverso luci ed effetti indicherà il vincitore.
