‘WE GOT IT!’ Club Revenge has won a year long campaign to give the venue a £1/4 million makeover in what its owners promise will be the ‘wow’ factor.

REVENGE’S OWNERS and staff are celebrating after winning a year long planning battle to revamp the legendary club. Key to the development was securing permission to transform its flat roof into a sunset and night time roof terrace. one80news learned of the decision as Revenge owners Stagfleet sent us the text: “We got it!!” as the decision came through. “The development will mean Revenge will continue to lead gay clubland in Brighton and act as a beacon for tourism to the city,” said a jubilant General Manager Andrew Roberts. “We’re all over the moon about the decision as at times it was touch and go.” Some local residents had objected, claiming that noise from a roof terrace would affect them, but plans to create a high-tec sound proof acoustic screen satisfied health and safety officers who recommended the go ahead. However, the Council’s conservation officer put a spanner in the works by objecting to the screen citing that it would not be in keeping with the historic façade. Given the Van Alen Development on the seafront many saw this as a bizarre argument and stepped in to campaign with Revenge. Both one80news and its sister

publication 3SIXTY stood together with the city’s other community publication G Scene to support Revenge’s application. 3SIXTY organised an on-line petition in February, securing hundreds of readers’ signatures, which were added to the two thousand collected from Revenge customers, demonstrating the over whelming community support for the project. The weight of opinion had the desired affect as planning councillors took the unusual step of visiting the roof terrace themselves and overruling the conservation officer. “We’d like to thank all of our customers for their support and a special mention to David Harvey, publisher of one80news and 3SIXTY, James Ledward publisher of GScene and Cllr Paul Elgood, who gave up a lot of time and energy to help us over the past few months.” said Andrew. Club Revenge has already begun discussions with the architects and interior designers who will transform the Club before next summer. Revenge, which recently celebrated its 15th birthday, has persistently come out tops in awards over the years as the best club in the South East, giving it iconic status for many from all over the UK.

9\e[ `k c`b\ k_\ 9Xe[`kj THE MANAGER of Brighton’s premier gay football team, Lee Towsey (above), and his team have scored a major role this season with the release of their film on the silver screen. The documentary of the Brighton Bandits will be one of the gay highlights of Brighton’s Film Festival this autumn. Following the highs and lows of the soccer season, the film celebrates the lives of our local boys in the first ever in depth doc about a gay team. “We did it because we thought it was great PR and would get people interested in the team,” says the Bandit’s Manager, Lee. “There’s this impression that gay football is different to straight football – that we’re a bunch of woofters on the pitch – but we’re just the same.” With plenty of on-field action and off-field shower scenes, it’s enough to turn the biggest soccer-hating homo into a Bandit fan. THE GRANDEES of the city’s cabaret scene are stepping out in their finest for this season’s adult pantomime. The cast of Sleeping Beauty and That Little Prick have begun rehearsals for the alternative show that has become a Brighton institution. With Brian Ralfe, Betty Swollocks,

Guy Chinery, Maisie Trollette, Jamie Watson, Lady James, Jason Prince, Miss Jason and Dave Lynn all featuring, this winter’s production is set to be a feast of innuendo (oh yes it is!), with proceeds going to The Sussex Beacon. “It will be a fun-filled night as with all our past pantos,

where people have left in fits of pain, because of laughing too hard,” says Brian Ralfe. “With the writings of Dave Lynn and contributions from David Raven and Miss Jason, we’re on the road to another hugely successful pantomime.” The stars will also be host-

ing a Christmas Party for The Sussex Beacon at Topolino’s Restaurant on Western Road on Wed 5 Dec. To book a place call 01273 725726. Sleeping Beauty and That Little Prick will be at Brighton Pavilion from Thurs 21 Feb – Sun 2 Mar. www.brightondome.org

as a shock, but the race for a new councillor is already underway. “It’s a tremendous sadness that illness has forced Dr Roy to stand down so soon after the local elections,” Geoffrey Bowden, Brighton Press Officer for the Greens, told one80news. Jason Kitcat has already been chosen as the Green candidate to replace her at the by-election. “We won the seat for the first time in May and we’ve got every chance of holding onto it,” he says. The other parties are also gearing up for the fight ahead. “We’re putting together a strong campaign with a strong candidate called Simon Doyle,” says Lib Dem Councillor Paul Elgood. The Labour election machinery is also in motion, with Labour leader Cllr Gill Mitchell , “This election is vital because we

must stop the Tories taking control of Brighton Council – they’re already breaking promise after promise.” Despite losing the seat in May, the Conservatives say they have a good chance of reclaiming the seat. “We’re looking to do better this time,” says the Conservative Leader of the Council, Brian Oxley. “It’s really a two-horse race between us and the Greens.” But a stalking horse could well upset these predictions. “It’s time for an active candidate with local knowledge,” says Independent candidate and mastermind behind Brighton’s adult pantomime, Brian Ralfe. “The Conservative Council has sat on its laurels and done nothing.” With the Regency by-election set for Thurs 13 Dec, the coming political scrap may prove less than festive.

A LEADING sexual health charity is holding a ‘cash for questions’ fun night at The Hanover pub to raise money for HIV care. The Terrence Higgins Trust will hold a quiz night at the bar on Queens Park Road on Tues 27 Nov. The event is one of the many World AIDS Day events and proceeds go to the charity. An art exhibition and auction will also be held on Sat 24 Nov at the Sundial Clinic Kemptown to raise muchneeded money for the charity. For more details on supporting THT, call Geoff Cook, Health Promotion Coordinator, on 01273764209. Gay Christians in Brighton will also be holding a service of reflection and remembrance on World AIDS Day at The Chapel, Royal Sussex Hospital at 7pm.

HARRY POTTER’S headteacher, Albus Dumbledore, has been outed by a leading children’s author. JK Rowling, who wrote the best selling series about a wizard boy-wonder, has revealed that the old teacher of Hogwarts School is gay. US religious groups are calling for the book to be banned for promoting homosexuality as well as witchcraft.

Lesbian worms SCIENTISTS ARE saying that ‘lesbian worms’ in the laboratory show how sexual orientation is ‘wired’ in the brain. Researchers at the University of Utah have turned millimetre-long worms gay by rewiring circuits in their brains. “It seems possible that if sexual orientation is genetically wired in worms, it would be in people too,” says Professor Erik Jorgensen who carried out the research.

The Great Gay Awards THE GREAT gay heroes and villains of 2007 have been named at a star-studded award ceremony in London. The glittering Stonewall Awards were held in the Victoria and Albert Museum to celebrate the work being done by individuals and groups towards gay equality in Britain. The gala, hosted by T4 presenter Anthony Crank, also raised funds for Stonewall’s continuing battles against homophobia. “We’re delighted that the awards raised about £40,000 for our education work, thanks to our sponsors, Barclays,” Ben Summerskill, Chief Executive of Stonewall told one80news.

“And we’re delighted that thousands of Stonewall supporters voted for the categories.” Among the winners of the prestigious awards were the gay crime writer Val McDer-

A LONG-ESTABLISHED gay bar in Brighton has taken on new owners and a new character. The Aquarium in Steine Street has been taken over by three friends with a taste for classy theatre bars. Michael Conran, Ben Burt and Darren Hulcoop celebrated their new venture with an impromptu Halloween Party, and will introduce

West End acts to one of the oldest gay bars in town. “We’re going to have specialist musical theatre events,” says Michael who has been involved in the West End theatres of London since he was 12. “Three or four acts an evening singing Sondheim and all sorts of performances.” The Aquarium Theatre bar will have a launch party in early Dec.

Brighton is tops BRIGHTON AND Hove is top of the league of British cities when it comes to quality of living, according to a new survey. Forum for The Future, the environmental charity, claims that the city has beaten other frontrunners, including Edinburgh and Cambridge, to be named best city in the country. The survey says that wealth, employment and high levels of education are just some of the reasons that put Brighton and Hove in the lead. “The reason it came first is that it has a number of great assets: the Downs, the ar-

chitecture, it’s a place where people are tolerant of all different kinds of people,” says Cllr Brian Oxley, Leader of the Council. “People feel they be just who they want to be.” The Chair of Brighton Pride, Josh Mills, agrees that Brighton deserves the top spot. “When I came to Brighton for a weekend, I never went back home,” he says. “I fell in love with being by the sea in this great city and I’ve lived in the same street for nine years.” However, the city scored less well on environment levels, with air and water pollution particularly high.

man to an embarrassing interrogation during a job interview, and then refusing to employ him because of his sexuality. The Bishop was later found guilty of discrimination at an employment tribunal. Veteran gay campaigner Antony Grey won the prized Hero of the Year for his work securing the legalisation of homosexuality in England in 1967. “The award for Antony Grey was a particular reminder that everything we’re currently achieving for our community in this country follows on from people like him in the past,” says Ben Summerskill.

Cameron’s Gaff THE CONSERVATIVE Leader has caused outrage after making a politically incorrect gaff about lesbians. David Cameron MP, who took control of the Conservative Party two years ago, has reportedly told a Lithuanian ambassador not to give too many grants “to one-legged Lithuanian lesbians.” The comment was immediately condemned by equality campaigners, including Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Kemptown, Simon Burgess. “Considering David Cameron is trying to portray himself as the acceptable face of the Conservatives, it’s appalling,” says Simon. “It just perpetuates Daily Mail stereotypes, and it’s disappointing that not even he can live up to what he says the Tory Party

Launch of LGBT History Month THE LGBT History month for 2008 is about to get off to a head start with the pre-launch event at the Royal Courts of Justice on Mon 26 Nov. The month, held each February, aims to educate school children about the issues which affect our communities and to end to homophobia in the playground. “I support LGBT History Month because I’ve co-ordinated two years of celebrations in my school and have seen how dramatically attitudes can change,” says Elly Barnes, a lesbian teacher and one half of the comedy duo, Tetraflap. “Homophobia only comes out of ignorance: once staff and students are made aware of what have gay people done in history they are no longer afraid..” www.lgbthistorymonth.org.uk

Beacon’s birthday bash BRIGHTON’S HOSPICE for people with HIV is celebrating 15 years as a centre of excellence in care. To mark its anniversary, The Sussex Beacon will be hosting an exhibition of its history on World AIDS Day (Sat 1 Dec) at the Unitarian Church, New Road. A dramatic balloon release, sponsored by The Bulldog and Party On Brighton, will commemorate the event. “When it opened the Beacon was a hospice to help people dying of HIV in a safe place,” says Fundraiser Julie Hales. ”Now, our role has changed to supporting people living with the illness.” Fundraising events are planned to support the hospice, including Dave Lynn’s Cabaret Academy performing at The Queen’s Arms on Sat 1 Dec. Businessman released THE BRIGHTON businessman who was accused of child abuse in Thailand has had his name cleared by police, according to his business partner. Alan Mawson, who owns the Bright ‘n’ Beautiful Sauna in Brighton, was arrested in Thailand, for having pornographic images of children and sexually abusing a 14-year-old boy. Mr Mawson denied the charges and

was released on bail. Mr Mawson’s business partner, Phillip Oliver, says that the case has now been thrown out. “There was no case to answer because it was someone trying to stitch him up,” Mr Oliver told one80news. “It was all a complete load of rubbish and he’s on his way home as soon. When he gets back he just wants to forget it all.”

A stroll around the estate A STUNNING country house on the outskirts of Brighton is opening its doors to the public as it launches the book of its past. A body for all equalities When the Government gatherered all the bodies that look after equality together under one umbrella, it gave the gay community a legal watchdog over our rights for the first time. Phelim McCafferty investigates how effective the new Equalities and Human Rights Commission will be. THE WAGES of homophobic DJ, Chris Moyles, are still being paid for by license fee payers. The Department for Children, Schools and Families own website advises teachers that it is perfectly acceptable for them to tell pupils that same sex relationships are a sin. Gay men still face a total blockage on donating blood to the National Blood Service; and over a third of LGBT teenagers don’t feel safe at school because of homophobic bullying. These are vivid examples of how the daily reality of our equality is still not here and they form the central arguments about why we need the equalities and the human rights of the LGBT communities to be taken seriously. The new Equalities and Human Rights Commission has the potential to be the flagpole upon which LGBT rights are raised. The new Commission will bring together the Equal Opportunities Commission, Commission for Racial Equality and Disability Rights Commission. The new commission will also have responsibility for age and religious belief, and we have been reassured that LGBT voices will be held high. However, it’s clear that the Commission has an absolutely vital role to play in providing a powerful and authoritative voice on equality. It has the ability to enforce equalities legislation as well as provide clear information for organisations and individuals in order to continue the process of dismantling discrimination. Among its myriad of new powers are some strong new aspects too: it can seek an injunction to prevent someone committing an unlawful discriminatory act. The attractions of one single commission are many: maximising resources, serving as one port of call for victims of discrimination and

for any organisation seeking advice on how to avoid discriminatory acts. Some critics including the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, argue that one new Commission won’t be able to maintain a strong focus on eliminating the many different forms of discrimination. Some also fear one commission might adopt watered-down approaches, avoiding the titanic, public struggles that were hallmarks of the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) in the eighties, something which changed swiftly when the chair of the new Commission, Trevor Phillips, took over the CRE in 2003. I have personal concerns that the commission’s responsibilities for gender, race, age, religious and disability discrimination will leave sexual orientation as

an after-thought, and again it seems that the trans communities have been left behind. I believe that often some of the worst discrimination and violence is felt by trans people and for that reason, with the Green Party I’m going to keep pushing for their protection in law. I also am concerned that the new Commission will skew certainly almost all methods of interpreting equalities: it will lend itself to a narrow list of ‘things which oppress you’. While the law will always be reactive, it is up to each of us to ensure that the way in which the law is understood now and in the future can benefit all of our lives. It’s important to remember that the law is not the panacea to all ills. The legal battlefields are of incredible importance and it’s obvious that the new

Commission will have to work hard, not only to inform the LGBT community of its existence but stay toughminded in order to make a meaningful difference. This is where I believe there’s a danger in placing all of our eggs in the basket of struggling for equality, and further I think it begins to displace all talk of liberation. While for example, civil partnerships are an important step in establishing the idea of equality, they can be seen

to be about our communities wanting to be accepted by the straight world. All of the dysfunctional power complexes that marriage has institutionalised can become even more entrenched as we leave behind us the important logic of how we will assert our human rights and affirm our right to sexual freedom. We need to be talking about the liberation we all need. We can pout in mirrors in as many gay pubs as there are days of the week while there’s a veto on any positive images of LGBT people in the classroom. We can go shopping at any number of trendy boutiques, but can we safely hold our partner’s hands anywhere except St James’s Street? We can get drunk as skunks in clubs while being bullied out of accessing health and education services. We can look great in designer jeans while we’re still having our heads kicked in, day-in dayout all over this country. Getting favourable changes in the law is always something I will campaign for but it can’t and won’t replace changing society. Law is only one way in which we will strive for liberation and the hard work often continues in the law’s application. There is a desperate need now to transform the legal standards that the new Commission will promote into an everyday reality, and further to dig our heels in because our fight for liberation is unfortunately far from over.

DO YOU THINK THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO LOOK AFTER EQUALITY, OR ARE WE LIBERATED ENOUGH TO DO IT FOR OURSELFS? FRAN, 22 - BRIGHTON “I’d say there should be a government body putting in place legal regulations to give a framework for how equality is dealt with. It can’t be assumed that equality will just happen, we need a channel to do it.”

JEZZ, 21 - BRIGHTON “We don’t need a commission for equality, we can do it for ourselves, especially in this country where there’s loads of people in the community who can help us create equality better than the Government.”

KATE, 20 - BRIGHTON “If you’re on an equal level, you shouldn’t need to be told to treat people the same, they should do it anyway. There should be more awareness, e.g. homophobia awareness in youth groups.”

RONA, 30 - ASHFORD “I don’t think the UK is liberated or happy enough, so we need to do a lot more for equality for ourselves. I don’t think the Government can do any more. We need to do it for ourselves, not leaving it up to the law-makers.”

RYAN, 26 - BRIGHTON “We can achieve equality for ourselves and we don’t need money ploughed into a body that isn’t going to work. They could spend the money on better things, like the NHS. This is just a “nice government thing to do.”

STEVEN, 26 -BRIGHTON “We do need a Government body to bring equality because some people just don’t have that frame of mind and they treat people differently. A body for equality is a good idea.”

FLICK, 19 - BRIGHTON.

The wonderful world of Hazel O’Connor The 1980 smash hit film and album, Breaking Glass, catapulted Hazel O’Connor into an overnight star and an icon of the era. Her first UK tour was supported by an unknown band called Duran Duran, and her top-ten hits ‘Will You’ and ‘Eighth Day’ are still considered classics. Cliff James talks to the musical legend about fame, fortune and living half-way up an Irish mountain. HAZEL O’CONNOR is a busy woman these days. When she’s not on the road with her latest tour, she’s building a new house in France (literally laying the walls and stairs herself), and recording outstanding new material at her cottage in Ireland. Now she’s set to perform in Brighton this month. And having collaborated with Brighton’s lesbian and gay Rainbow Chorus, she’s already got something of a creative connection with the city.

Is it difficult performing in front of hundreds one minute, and then going home to the middle of nowhere the next? I go into hermit mode; I just come in, stay in my nightie and dressing gown, sit around with the dogs and watch Eastenders. What were you doing before you hit the big time with the film and album, Breaking Glass?

I wanted to be adventurous: I ran away from home at 16, lived in Europe, Japan, Beirut, Arab countries, zillions of things before I was 21, and by the time I was 24 I was in a fucking movie! Breaking Glass is about a young singer, Kate, who ends up being wrecked by the music industry did the character resemble the real you? There were vestiges of me in her. The script was rewritten by the director after I’d come on board, so a lot of my story ended up in the film. But we wanted her to go loopy loo, so I hope I’m a slightly different person to her; she’s a bit of a sham. It happens time and time again: a person’s ego gets flattered, they believe what they read about themselves, and suddenly they’re different. People with great talent have an ability for selfabuse. That’s what I think about fame and fortune: it’s a load of bollocks!! No, fame is bollocks; fortune would be nice. How did being famous affect you? All the things I’d done in my teenage years and didn’t care about, including nude photo sessions, came out to play! You get the good press, then you get the gutter press. For anyone else, it’s fish and chip paper the next day, but for the person whose tits are adorning the cover, it has big implica-

tions. It’s as if you become a thing – a walking sausage that they sell in the shop. So what, I took my clothes off when I was 17. But then it comes back to haunt you! You covered George Michael’s One More Try and he appeared in one of your early videos – are you still friends? I met him and Andrew Rigley when they were doing Wham Rap, and we all became good friends. George appeared in one of my videos. We had a kiss in the video, this is before he came out. So the papers said he was moving out of his mother’s house to move in with ‘the more experienced, Hazel O’Connor’. It was weird. You’ve been singing with the Rainbow Chorus and have another show booked with them... Yeah, I’m very excited about it because they’re really lovely guys and girls. They’re in love with what they do, and when we put our two sides of talents together it was explosive. We had a buzz. In your hit, Eighth Day, you sing about humans ruining the earth – is this still a concern of yours? Yes, North Korea, America, Israel, and the arms programme are just frightening. It’s shocking that America’s armed to the teeth. They don’t give a shit

IT’S A friendship born from the love of rare music. Massimo Redaellli and Robert Goodman met five years ago and connected instantly - it’s not everyday a harpsichordist meets the player of the baroque flute. They formed a band with two other musicians and set about perfecting their 17th century sound. Unfortunately, the other two players had 17th century attitudes and couldn’t quite come to terms with Massimo and Robert’s sexuality. “We wanted to do a concert at Pride, but the other two weren’t happy about playing to a gay audience,” Massimo explains. “Pride itself isn’t strictly speaking a gay audience – it’s a community event – but that was their personal beliefs and they weren’t happy.” After forming a breakaway band, Massimo and Robert decided to tackle homophobia by championing gay charities. From his own experience, Robert knew that Allsorts, the gay youth project, is an essential service. “I was fortunate as my parents were gay-friendly,” he says. “When I was 8 years old they sat me down and said you might be gay and you might start fancying other boys. That was 32 years ago and there were no gay youth support groups. As a counsellor, I’ve heard of Allsorts, and thought we should do a concert for them” All proceeds from the concert on Sat 24 Nov will go to Allsorts. Now looking for other Baroque musicians to join them, Massimo and Robert have plans to support World AIDS Day and Winter Pride with more fundraising concerts of music written by gay composers such as Corelli and Barbara Strozzi.

Alison: If I masturbated and never told anybody, and thought it was a bit odd, I would probably think I was weird. Instead, I see the ones who laugh, and I know they do it too. We can all share our

experiences of masturbating together. Are you really ‘together’? Alison: Our name requires four flaps, and neither of us have that many on our own. Elly: We shagged once. Alison: It was three times actually. Elly, you’ve got a great voice, why aren’t labels begging to sign you? Elly: That’s very sweet; I like the idea of being begged to sing, so romantic. Alison: Probably the same reason the London Symphony Orchestra don’t regularly commission me to write music. They’re afraid of lesbians. Tetraflap are at The Marlborough, 4 Princes Street, BN2 on Thurs 8 Nov

When life’s a drag...

fe\/'Zfddle`kp The burning times: a history of bonfire night As Guy Fawkes Night draws near and every dog in the city is howling at the endless ricochet of fireworks and bangers, Lynx Wildwood - a Brighton mystic - gives the low down on the festival, and investigates the gay roots to the original hot guy... November – this year the 8th of November) was celebrated with fire many years before this event.

WE TEND to think of the 5th of November as ‘Guy Fawkes Night’ a reminder that a guy called ‘Guy’ was caught trying to blow up the

(Half) Marathon Man

As the runners get ready for the Sussex Beacon’s 2008 half-marathon through Brighton’s streets, our very own marathon man, Neil Cozzi, gets into training for his training... TO PUT it simply I had a blonde moment. Quite literally in fact, I was sat half cut dressed as Agneta in the Duke of York’s for Eurovision night, and The Sussex Beacon stall was next to me. Through some osmotic process, I decided that a half-marathon run mid-winter was exactly what I needed. Though this was the same mind that thought a short blue dress, blonde wig and makeup on a 5’6” 188lb male was also a fabulous idea and required immediate Nobel satisfaction. Some people should be kept from themselves... So, I’ve been training in order to get fit enough to train properly (make sense?). It’s the athletic equivalent of toast (why take something which has been cooked and then burn it?). I am toast. Except, I’m anything but hot. I’m now in a new world, that of the seafront. Despite the myth there is no real “runnerhood”. Men run with their sexfaces on and women think I’m a different species of rapist if I toss a nod their way. Next, I dodge the kid on a bike. Ali was wrong, these beauties move like butterflies and sting like a bee. I remember The Omen and keep clear of the railings. The senses don’t miss out: the warm fart of chlorine as I crawl past the King Alfred and the camper vans which remind me of that bridge in Camden (join the dots people). It’s a complete experience and horribly addictive.

FIRE FESTIVALS Throughout the world, since ancient history, there have been fire celebrations in the late autumn. Britain has been no exception, and pagan or Celtic festivities date back many centuries. From the 13th century, the word “guy” described a dummy or effigy used to represent the Harvest King or Queen, often made with wheat, barley or corn. Bonfires were lit and torches were carried in processions. This was the ancient New Year celebration of ‘Samhain’. Samhain is now mostly known as ‘Halloween’ and is often celebrated in an unfortunate twist of what was once a sacred festival of death, ancestors and rebirth. After the Gunpowder Plot, the ‘guy’ on the bonfire came to represent the unfortunately named Guy Fawkes. At this time of year, I celebrate in the traditional pagan way by remembering my lost loved ones and celebrating rebirth and the onset of winter using ritual, chant, meditation and dance. I also take time to remember the fires of the ‘burning times’.

FAGGOTS The ‘burning times’ represent a vast period in history from the 13th to the 17th centuries when tens of thousands (some say millions) of healers, gay men and lesbians, old or unmarried women, widows, midwifes, and followers of the ancient tradition were tortured and murdered, either by hanging, drowning or being burned alive, because they didn’t comply with the controlling regime of Christianity that was sweeping across the West. During these times, gender ‘non-conformity’ was punished along with nonchristian spirituality. Some believe that gay men would be thrown on the witches’ fires and burned with the ‘faggots’ or bundles of kindling sticks. Gradually the term came to refer to the victims of this practice as well as the wood itself.

murdered for their difference. This persecution of non-heterosexual people and/or witches/pagans continues in many cultures today through negative imagery in the media and political/religious propaganda. Perhaps we could remember these victims and spare a thought for their suffering when we look into the flames of the ‘Bonfirenight’ fires. At the same time we can continue their good work as pioneers for freedom of choice and use these ancient celebrations as opportunities to work towards peace and acceptance for all.

PERSECUTION It’s a sad fact that the very people from whom we inherited these wonderful celebrations of the Earth are the ones who were For more information call Lynx on 01273 30797 or email lynx.wildwood@ntlworld.com or see www.lilithrising.co.uk

Diary of a Beauty Queen SO, THERE’S just a week to go until the final of Miss Gay UK. You may have seen me around before in such places as The Marlborough, normally waggling a drunken finger at anyone willing to humour me, but it just so turns out that this finger waggler is your Brighton hopeful for the national final. Yes, that rights, lady and gents, I, Andrea Kenny am Miss... Gay... Brighton! Currently, my emotional state is rocky to say the least (but that might just be because I missed The Bill last night!) Seriously now, I had no expectation of winning the heat. I now find myself facing the prospect of standing in an evening gown in front of a crowd of rowdy brummy lesbians. Those who know me will know I’m a confident person, but to use the technical term, I’m crapping myself. On the night, I will be paraded around

As the final heat of the Miss Gay UK contest gets closer, Brighton’s homegrown hopeful, Andrea Kenny, reveals all...

like a big (or little!) gay show pony. Hopefully I’ll win a rosette at least! I have to answer some questions and grin inanely. And no, I really won’t feel silly (ahem). One of the main themes of the event (apart from finding the queen of the gays) is the charity fundraising that accompanies it. So if you see me shaking a bucket on a corner near you, or shamelessly thrusting a sponsorship form under your nose, please give generously as it will help me win (only joking, well, kind of). The charity is the Lesbian & Gay Foundation so really it will benefit us all. Please wish me luck, or better still get your lovely gay arses up to Nightingales in Birmingham on November the 9th to show the rest of the UK what Brighton’s made of!

Ask Miss Jason DEAR MISS JASON When’s the best time to tell your boyfriend that you can’t stand anything about them anymore, and you’re moving out? Chris DEAR CHRIS, Ooh, dear, probably just after he’s bought you the birthday present that you’ve been asking for. Oh no! The very best time to tell him is when your new boyfriend comes to collect your stuff from the flat; it’s very effective. I’ve never left anyone, dear, they’ve always left me. Love, Miss Jason X DEAR MISS JASON With so many British troops dying in Afghanistan and Iraq, do you think we should bring home our troops from the ‘war on terror’? Megan DEAR MEGAN I do most certainly think the troops should come back, dear. I think we should leave it now to their own people to sort out what’s going on over there. I think it’s awful that our young men are still out there fighting in the conditions that they have to. We owe it to our service men and women to get them back to their families. We also need to be more serious about fighting terrorism in our own country. It sickens me to think that people go to work and still face the fact that something horrific could happen to them on a daily basis by using public transport in our cities. Love, Miss Jason XX DEAR MISS JASON Who is the greatest drag queen of them all in Brighton? MX DEAR M, Oh, without a doubt, dear, Maisie Trollette. Maisie with bells on, Maisie starkers would still be the best. It’s not often in life that you get to meet your heroes and become friends of them and I’m very grateful that I got to meet Maisie, bless her. Lessons for Anti-Bullying Week, 19-23 Nov

SEVERAL YEARS ago, a 15 year old student of mine was hospitalised in a homophobic attack by a classmate. He became withdrawn and eventually dropped out of school, just months before his GCSEs. Report after report confirms the misery and danger which LGBT youth face every day at school. For 15 years, the (unfounded!) fear of Section 28 led to most teachers censoring LGB issues (trans issues have always been invisible) from their classrooms and to some teachers even feeling afraid to challenge bullying. Section 28 is gone and we now have government guidance, saying that schools should include homosexuality in sex ed classes, and challenge homophobic bullying. Like many developments, the headlines look great. But where was the publicity to let teachers know Section 28 had gone? A year later, a queer activist in Brighton sprayed a Stagecoach billboard with ‘Scrap Section 28’. Why was the new Sex and Relationships Education guidance so hard to find? Was Ruth Kelly embarrassed? Where is their support for LGBT History Month? They pulled the plug on our website funding at short notice, which would have killed the project but for a generous donation. I worry that the new homophobic bullying guidance, excellent though it is, will not be seen as a priority by education leaders. As for those of us at the chalkface, I doubt many will even know it exists. Here in Brighton, the LEA has been working, in partnership with local groups and agencies, on a project to tackle homophobic and transphobic bullying. Teachers tell me they would welcome guidance and support. I just hope local headteachers and governors act now - before another generation of vulnerable teenagers are consigned to hospital and the educational scrapheap.

Change Your World

Step out of your comfort zone and realise your potential “HOW DO YOU feel about investing one day of your life in order to change your world?” asks Peter Cornwell, codirector of The Comfort Zone, a lifecoaching workshop initiative created to help you with your life decisions. It’s a no-brainer, right? Of course you want to invest eight hours in the rest of your life. But can it really work? What can we learn in such a short time that can literally change our world? And what is it about our worlds that we really want to change? “Well, spending a day with us, you will find out what your real goals are and, more importantly, what life will be like when you achieve them,” says Peter. “For example, if you think you want to be the next MD of British Gas we will use techniques to show you what it would actually be like to live that life. We examine the core motivations in your life as well as

rethinking the factors that have (until now) been holding you back. When you have your real goals decided, we will show you how to go ahead and achieve them with a step-bystep plan and lots of tools to help you along the way.” Matthew Jennings, Director and Lead Coach of The Life Man Ltd, is an experienced specialist in work and career coaching, with a background in corporate recruitment. “We find the experience really helps people to gain clarity and focus,” says Matthew. “We examine core values and belief systems, allowing people to work out what works best for them. This frees people up to be who they want to be. When you know where it is that you want to go - and have a map of how to get there - you will find that it is much easier to reach your destination.”

We base our ethos on the principle that your goal just needs to be big enough to change your world.

ON NOVEMBER 7th 2007 yogis from nearly all yoga traditions around the world, including me, will be celebrating the birthday of the ancient Indian sage Patanjali. Patanjali is credited for writing the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali around 2,300 years ago. His short work summarises the whole of yoga philosophy in only 196 brief aphorisms or ‘sutras’. One sutra says that yoga can be thought as having eight constituent parts which are: moral injunctions (yama), fixed observances (niyama), posture (asana), regulation of breath (pramayama), internalisation of the senses towards their source (pratyahara), concentration (dharana), meditation (dhyana) and absorption of the consciousness in the self (samadhi). My own yoga Guru, B.K.S. Iyengar, is well known for showing how all of these aspects of yoga can be experienced within yoga asana or posture. When B.K.S. Iyengar is in a yoga asana or posture he is experiencing the whole of the eight constituent parts, even the subtle and higher aspects of yoga beyond the physical body. When we begin yoga we think that the yoga asana or posture are physical, but they have effects that go far beyond; with practice, dedication and surrender they can penetrate the physical, physiological and psychological aspects of our being. So, on November the 7th, even if you never intend to read Patanjali’s yoga sutras, or even if you don’t normally practice yoga out of your class, why not step onto your yoga mat and practice yoga to give thanks to Patanjali and the lineage of yoga teachers over the past 2,000 years. The Lightning Field REACHING HIGH above the New Mexico desert is an icon of contemporary art, The Lightning Field: 400 polished steel poles designed to attract lightning. But it’s more than just electric storms that close in on this wonder of the modern world: a young gay couple from New York head down with their divorced parents to see it for themselves. Sam and Andy face an elemental struggle of their own as they realise their relationship mirrors that of their unhappy parents. In true Wuthering Heights’ style, nature imitates human drama, and long-buried tensions explode during the tempestuous climax. An outstanding production of an award-winning play. To win two tickets see Page 23. Oval House Theatre, 52-54 Kennington Oval, London Tues 13 Nov- Sat 8 Dec.

Pause for thought IT’S TIME to reflect on life, love and the unsolved mysteries of existence this month as the Pause exhibition comes to the Phoenix Gallery. Through moving images, an army of artists explore the dark myths that underpin the human condition. Fox and Gammidge’s installation around the Who Killed Cock Robin fairy tale explores the natural rituals of loss and bereavement. Russell Webb’s Living End (above), takes inspiration from memento mori works of the Renaissance, while Tony Gammidge’s Baba Yaga Chronicles uses a cast of bears, wolves and burning ships to bring to life a Siberian fantasy. As the winter evenings loom closer, this exhibition will get you in the seasonal mood. Free entrance. Phoenix Gallery, 10 Waterloo Place. BN2 www.phoenixarts.org

THE WINTER is upon us, and there’s nothing better than spending a lazy afternoon-into-evening in a warm’n’cosy pub with a glass of mulled wine. Luckily, Brighton has no shortage of these fine drinking establishments to warm us up for our mad evening ahead. From the traditional wood panelled venues where the locals are a happy family, to the shinier bars where the youth sup WKD, everyone will find a place where they fit in. The Marlborough is the girls’ haven, and they celebrate their birthday on Wed 10 Nov with a Black and White Ball. It’s a double celebration as they launch their takeover of the Marlborough Theatre with free comedy performances and a party downstairs. The Queen’s Arms is a firm Brighton institution, always offering a entertainment with top local acts, including karaoke or DJ’s, and cabaret on Sundays. Always an interesting experience, and the carpet is the stuff of legend! Soul funk comes to R-Bar on Sunday nights with a new way to warm up for the night ahead. The Beach House Brasserie has just launched upstairs, and it’s a great place to get a Sunday Roast. I lurve cocktails, and Tuesdays is Mojito Madness at Charles Street. Another great place to try if you want to get off the gay route is Riki Tiks in the North Laines with fab décor and great cocktails. Brighton Rocks make the best Chili Mojito around, and have a DJ on every weekend. And you can’t talk about Brighton pubs without mentioning Dr Brighton’s, a great place to spend a relaxing evening. There are loads of places to try before one of the special club events happening. Fri 2 Nov sees Asylum launch at Charles Street, with the ever fabulous Bliss on Sat 3. DJ Superstar Eric Kupper is playing at Fierce Angel @Revenge on Friday 9th. There are so more great pubs to talk about, I recommend you go out on a pub crawl to rediscover Brighton’s finest! My Tune of the Week is awesome!! It’s “Mexico (Keep Movin, Keep Groovin)” by Nick Nite & Tex Mex. Big Love VERITY XX

A Deal with the Devil by Martin Suter A YOUNG woman recently divorced from a psychotic banker who had tried to murder her, Sonia begins a new life by leaving the city where she had been living and taking a job as a physiotherapist at a newly resorted resort hotel in an obscure Swiss village. However, appalling weather disrupts the start of the season and when the hotel is not shrouded in fog it is drenched by torrential rain. Matters aren’t improved because of the evident hostility of the locals, most particularly the son of a local farmer, a predatory stalker. And soon after Sonia’s arrival the calm of the hotel is disturbed by a series of small but worrying events. After discovering a book about local legends and

too, that she’s surrounded by a group of people she isn’t sure she can trust. Almost the only person with whom she feels secure is a fellow therapist, Manuel, a gay man, who encourages her to stay when she decides to flee and encourages her affair with the hotel’s pianist. Yet things continue to deteriorate. A Deal with the Devil is a highly atmospheric and chillingly disturbing novel which continues with the shocks and thrills until the very end. reading one of the tales, Sonia realises that what is happening at the hotel exactly mirrors the sinister happenings in one of the myths. She realises,

A Deal with the Devil by Martin Suter (£11.99) is out now, published by Arcadia Books.

Worth Fighting With by Vincent Quinn DANNY WHELAN is a fourtysomething lecturer in English at a provincial university. He is terminally unambitious and a bit of a sad case. His career is as stagnant as his emotional life – which doesn’t get much beyond pining for Christian, his former lover, and an obsession with fit young football players. His attempts at writing a novel of his own seem permanently stalled and in some respects he’s never escaped from rituals established in adolescence, including supporting his local team and compulsively rereading favourite books by the likes of ‘Miss Read’ and Barbara Pym. The meals he eats are dire and worthy of an Iris Murdoch novel. Into Danny’s life (cosy but comatose) come Barbara

Barnes, a slick feminist up from London, on the make and on the way up, and specialist in Queer Studies Ronan MacIntyre, who knows all the right buzz words and is desperate for success above and beyond that he has achieved in academe.

Between them, these two canny operators give Danny’s life a much-needed shaking as he and they come into conflict with the various eccentric factions on campus. First time novelist Vincent Quinn is more than familiar with the material he has melded into his novel (he teaches English and Gay Studies at the University of Sussex) and his venture into territory more usually stalked by Malcom Bradbury and David Lodge is sharply observed and frequently laugh out-loud funny. Worth Fighting With marks an auspicious debut.

Single out now

FORGETTING THE drama & circus of Britney Spears, let us remember that she is, above all else, a popstar. Less feisty stars would perhaps try & show a side of reflection on the baldheaded issues of late. But what is perhaps refreshing, is that Britney doesn’t, or maybe won’t. To almost prove this point, the track “Piece Of Me” goes on to acknowledge the media attention, and flips it the royal bird. The album is fantastic. It’s fresh, upbeat & futuristic, and yet every track is unmistakably Britney. Break The Ice is a real showstopper, and Toy Soldier, whilst obscure & bizarre, is also a

AHHH, MCFLY. Where would we be without you? Time after time, you deliver a song that not only lodges itself into children’s heads all over the country, but us adults (or Kid-Dults) can’t help but smile and hum along. (It never hurts either to get your kit off every now & again. What’s that? You do? Fabulous). The greats are all here: Please Please, All About You, Obviously, and new single The Heart Never Lies - amongst others. They’ve come a long way from being in Busted’s shadow, but at 14 tracks, it’s a real feel-good album and one to grab that hair-brush and sing along to.

FOLLOWING HOT of the heels of the number one hit Every Heartbeat, Robyn serves up a filthy slice of Swedish homegrown pop. It’s an amusing tale and, though lacking the atmospheric lust of the last single, this is a staggering juggernaut of a tune.

magnificent stroke of pop genius at the same time. Definitely the best of Britney to date, so despite “those other things”, she found time to record a great album. You’d almost forgive her for forgetting her knickers.

TV by Niall McMurray 30 Rock Five - Thursdays 10.40pm GOD LOVE Five. Singularly incapable of producing a genuine home-grown hit, they hang around TV’s open kitchen windows, stealing hot potatoes from under the cook’s nose, which explains why Natasha Kaplinsky is soon to be seen reading the news. Their American raids are getting more savvy; having pinched CSI and its ever multiplying offshoots, they’re now swiping some of the best American comedy while it’s still warm. Hence this week’s recommendation, the sublime 30 Rock, the other show about television, the one, unlike Studio 60, that didn’t get cancelled. It’s hilarious. Tina Fey writes and stars as the producer of the Saturday Night Live-ish “The Girlie Show”, crushed when her boss brings in microwave hotshot Alec Baldwin to run, and interfere with, the network. Cue delicious paranoia, in-jokes that are actually funny and a career best performance from Mr Baldwin who really should have been doing comedy all these years. While not quite in the same league as Arrested Development, 30 Rock is still the funniest thing on TV right now, and certainly the best programme about television since The Mary Tyler Moore Show. So on Thursday night, switch over to Five – you may want to practise first, it’s probably not a button you use too much.

Worth Fighting With by Vincent Quinn (£8.99) is out now, published by Southern Tier Editions/ Turnaround.

Comedy Review by Russell Phillips

Mitch Benn and The Distractions at the Corn Exchange MITCH BENN comes from the Richard Stilgoe (whom my mum tells me was good) and Bill Bailey school of comedy, the act consisting of singing funny songs about various situations. In itself, that doesn’t sound so good but bear with me: you get none of those embarrassing moments where the jokes aren’t funny or worse, the act is obnoxious, sexist and homophobic (Rev Obadiah Steppenwolf III take note). I’ve seen Mitch before at Komedia, where he only had a 30 minute slot. Funny though this was, I must admit to thinking that he couldn’t possibly keep the laughs going for an entire two hour show. How wrong I was: two hours just wasn’t enough to see the range of this performer It’s not just about singing funny songs; he lampoons boy bands, raps, lets us know how much he hates James Blunt and manages to cram in an Andrew Lloyd Webber style musical and a Jeff Wayne

War of the Worlds take on the children’s book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. His musical observations of these latter two genres is spot on and almost as funny as the lyrics. Add to this a bit of improvisation in the form of singing a randomly selected page of an encyclopaedia and a song written in the interval from the audience suggestion of ‘the postal strike’ and you have a very entertaining show.

It’s not all played for laughs, however. Mitch sang a couple of songs from his work on BBC Radio 4’s current affairs comedy show, The Now Show. These songs were poignant and well thought out observations on real news stories, all-be-it comedy ones, my favourite suggesting that George Bush Jr invaded Iraq because they, “made his daddy cry”. I was almost convinced! Mitch is no Prima Donna; he’s a genuine nice guy. In fact, at the end of the show he appeared from behind the curtain with two cardboard boxes of his CDs. He then set himself up in the foyer and happily talked to his fans as he sold them CDs and personally signed every one. Mitch has recently appeared on the BBC One Show and also regularly tours the country. If you get the opportunity, go see him; I guarantee you will laugh. www.mitchbenn.com

DVDs by Niall McMurray Doctor Who: The Complete Third Series (2 Entertain, 5th November)

USING THE absence of Rose Tyler as the dramatic impetus for the third season of Who proved to be another stroke of genius from Russell T Davies, as the Doctor (David Tennant, now the second definitive incarnation of the role) struggles to accept new companion Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman, excelling in a largely thankless part). The complexity of their relationship adds unexpected emotional depth to the now standard formula of the series, lifting the very few underwhelming stories, Daleks In Manhattan being the most obvious – and enhancing the great ones, Human Nature/Family Of Blood in particular – to jaw-droppingly good levels. Blink, the traditional Doctorlite episode, is possibly the scariest yet of the new run, and the final 3 part denouement featuring both Derek Jacobi and John Simm as the Master is simply some of the finest, most inventive television you will ever see. Whether this level of excellence and intensity can be maintained remains to be seen, but until Season 4 rolls around, this boxset is not only great fun, but also a historical record of a golden age of television. One to treasure.

Bright spark Brighton Bright teeth whitener Martin Mares makes us smile... Why and how did you choose to go into the teeth whitening business? When I got married a year ago we decided to look for some business venture together. My wife is really into all sorts of beauty things and I was looking for something where the investment level was not huge and where the profit margins were good. I came across a Franchise offering a teeth-whitening business but I felt they were not really offering much value for their Franchise fee - not an uncommon phenomenon. So I decided to go for it on our own.

Village Drinks The Hanbury Club THE UK’S leading social networking event, Village Drinks, has landed in Brighton. The monthly events have proven popular in London among political, legal and financial figures, and now the cream of Brighton’s professionals have had a taste of the fun. “The inaugural event was a huge success with over 100 people attending throughout the evening,” said organiser Neil Spring. “We want gay professionals across Sussex to have the same events that our members in London get.” The next great event is happening on Tues 13 November at The Honey Club Bar, Brighton.

What were you doing before Brighton Bright? Oh, where do I start? Manufacturing engineer, Product development, IT, Property development... How long have you lived in Brighton, and tell us what you love most about the city? I moved here in summer 2005 from Pease Pottage. I love the atmosphere - bohemian, cosmopolitan, different. I love that it’s not a huge place and one can be in the countryside in 15 minutes. What is your ideal Brighton weekend? A bit of beach volleyball and a nice drink in the sunshine afterwards. Or maybe visit one of the many restaurants in the evening. I like a relaxing Sunday - perhaps a walk along the seafront and what about a lovely lunch with sea views somewhere! There’s a perception that more and more people are getting their teeth improved – do you think that we’re generally becoming more ‘metrosexual’ and concerned with our appearances? Perhaps yes. One thing we have noticed is that we get slightly more men than women coming to us. I guess men have been neglecting themselves a bit more in the past. And more and more people are single these days, which may put more pressure on our appearance. What’s the strangest/most amusing encounter you’ve had with a customer? Well, I always find it amusing when you

hear a snoring noise and you have to gently wake the customer up... What advice would you give to people who want to set up their own company? Do thorough market research. Where are customers going to come from? What is the demand? Is the demand seasonal? What marketing methods and budget will be required? And be careful to take on large overheads from day one. You quite often see people taking on expensive premises and within a few months they are gone. Where do you want to be in 10 years time? I would by then like to have enough passive income to feel secure. I would like to have say 3 or 4 different places in which I would spend a few months. One would be somewhere in Italy, then another in a different sunny location, one in the Alps, and one in my town of birth - Prague.

fe\/'YXZbgX^\j Charlie’s kitchen recipes OH MY GOD! WINTER IS DEFINITELY CLOSING IN! TIME TO INDULGE IN SOMETHING HEART-WARMINGLY DELICIOUS THAT MY FRIENDS AND I CAN EAT IN FRONT OF THE FIRE!

EASY BEEF AND PUMPKIN CASSEROLE (Serves 4) INGREDIENTS

• 1 large finely chopped onion • 4 8oz rump steaks • 1 small pumpkin peeled, de-seeded and chopped into small pieces • 2 large carrots roughly chopped • 12 new potatoes • 1 sprig fresh rosemary • Handful fresh mint finely chopped • bottle good red wine • litre liquid beef stock • 1 tablespoon tomato sauce • Olive oil • Good dash Worcestershire sauce • Salt and pepper to taste • Large loaf crusty bread METHOD

• In a steamer steam the potatoes carrots and pumpkin for about 5 mins • Meanwhile preheat the oven to 200c • Heat a little olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and brown the onions • Remove and set aside • Return pan to the heat and turn up to high • Brush steaks on one side with a little olive oil and season with salt and pepper • Fry on each side for 1-2 mins to brown. Remove from heat and cut into large chunks • Mix together with the flour • Drain the pumpkin and potatoes and place in the bottom of a large casserole or oven proof dish • Add the steak and rosemary • Combine the red wine, stock, tomato sauce and Worcestershire sauce and pour over • Cook for 10 minutes until liquid begins to brown and thicken TO SERVE

Ladle into large bowls. Sprinkle mint generously over, sop up juices with the bread. Cuddle up and enjoy...

Ask Charlie... Please Charlie I always seem to overcook my vegetables and also have no idea how to tackle autumn vegetables like pumpkin or parsnips! Can you please give me some hints? THIS IS a question that a lot of people have asked me recently! I would suggest that the best way to cook vegetables like green beans, broccoli, brussel sprouts, carrots and courgettes I think is to gently steam them, Heat a large pan with salted boiling water and bring to the boil, place a colander or steamer over the top of it and add your vegetables. Take care the colander or steamer doesn’t touch the water. Cover and steam for 3 -4 minutes for all of the above except the carrots. I would suggest 5 minutes for these. This will cook until “al dente” or just so – firm but tender. With pumpkin or other squashes, lay on a board, cut lengthwise with a sharp knife. Scoop out seeds with a spoon, cut into pieces. Place in a baking dish, drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepper and roast in a hot oven for 45 minutes. For recipes or to ask your culinary question email Charlie at charlieskitchen@hotmail.com

Oblong: a touch of the good life. FROM THE moment I met part owner of Oblong, Mark Stoller, I knew I was in for a good time in a place that was the epitome of cool. The low key elegance of high vaulted ceilings, chandeliers and a stunning roof terrace are only part of this amazing experience. On the night we arrived, the place was buzzing with a gypsy jazz duo entertaining in the corner. In order that we tasted the whole experience Mark treated us to a pre–dinner wine tasting of among other things an earthy Tasmanian Sauvignon Blanc and a delightfully refreshing French Etoile! Delicious. We finally plumped for a vibrant Pinot Grigio to have with our meal. While my companion, Alan, supped on his wine, I escaped to the kitchen to meet chef Ren Esack. Ren is ex Palais du Jardin London and Tin Drum and has been cooking for 12 years. Ren is South African and has worked all over the world. These influences are very evident in his menu. Produce is locally sourced and there is a special menu new daily. Oblong favourites are cur-

rently Coq au Vin and succulent Scotch Fillet. with Slow Baked Potato Gratin. For a starter I chose the Lamb Kofte Kebabs with homemade Hummus and Pitta Bread. The lamb was juicy and succulent, with the right spiciness and a mouth watering hummus. Alan’s light, fruity Tomato and Basil soup with Mascarpone was a lovely combination of flavours. There was a short wait for our mains but as I knew everything was made from scratch we didn’t mind. My perfectly cooked whole Grilled Sea bass with the most divine Crab and Chilli Hollandaise was a prayer on a plate and the Scotch Fillet with its fiery Peppercorn Sauce and Slow Baked Potato Gratin was melt in the mouth. For dessert we opted for the Apple and Almond Cinnamon Crumble and a Trio of Cheeses with homemade chutney. Perfect. Oblong is definitely worth a visit for their Brunch, Tapas, Lunch or Dinner menu. 3 course Prix Fixe is only £13.50 It also has a really cool bar with great cocktails!

RUSSELL GRANT

Competition Time!

ARIES - 21 MARCH - 20 APRIL

You will probably feel that someone doesn’t quite believe what you’re telling them. If you know it’s the truth, don’t let their doubts demoralise you! There’s a degree of deceit around now so stay alert in all business and financial dealings. Upcoming events will call for calm decision-making rather than rash reactions.

The Lightning Field.

The way you feel about yourself sends silent signals to others; you don’t even have to utter a word. If you are confident, this will show the instant someone is introduced to you. If you’re uncertain, people will sense your insecurity. You must stay positive, ignore negative thoughts and let others see your creative side.

The Lightning Field is about a young couple, Sam and Andy, whose relationship comes to a dramatic climax in the New Mexico desert (see P.11).

GEMINI - 22 MAY - 21 JUNE

Someone you work with might want to make some changes to your regular routines. Initially you won’t like what they are suggesting, but eventually you will accept that their ideas could make life easier and you will give their plans a go. An exciting new opportunity will be coming your way in the very near future.

CANCER - 22 JUNE - 23 JULY

To be in with a chance of winning 2 tickets, answer this question: Where is the New Mexico Desert? (a) Mexico (b) U.S.A. (c) Bognor Regis

Someone will try to spoil your carefully made arrangements by changing plans at a moment’s notice. You will probably turn down a chance to earn extra money if it means seeing less of your loved ones because you aren’t the sort of person who allows yourself to be defined by what you earn!

LEO - 24 JULY - 23 AUGUST

TO ENTER: 1) Email your answer to info@one80news.co.uk giving your name, address & telephone number. 2) Text ‘one80comp’ and your answer to 07775630594 with your name and address. 3) Pop your answer on a postcard with contact details to one80news, 4 Steine Street, Brighton BN2 1TE.

Accept it; accidents do happen! A careless pal may break something valuable. You shouldn’t allow minor mishaps to ruin relationships with people. You will have to put your foot down and assert yourself with a loved one who is about to make a move that you think is not only ill-advised, but is just plain daft.

VIRGO - 24 AUGUST - 23 SEPTEMBER

An older relative will wear you out if you keep giving in to all their demands. They think it’s their right to snatch all your attention. Before this becomes a habit, insist that they start standing on their own two feet. You won’t be in a very outgoing mood, but you will treasure time spent with a close friend or partner.

LIBRA - 24 SEPTEMBER - 23 OCTOBER

This prize is non-transferable and there is no cash alternative. Usual one80news conditions apply (available on request). Closing date for entries is Mon 12 Nov 2007.

A recurring dream might make you start thinking of a friend you’ve not seen in ages. Something relating to the past, or to this person, is bugging you. For your own peace of mind, you should call them or send them an email. Very soon you could receive some good news that means you can finally deal decisively with an ongoing issue concerning a personal or family matter.

SCORPIO - 24 OCTOBER - 22 NOVEMBER

Answer from Issue 11 of one80news’ Competition Time! : a) Gaydar.

SAGITTARIUS - 23 NOVEMBER - 21 DECEMBER

Boo Kipps (pictured) has won two tickets to see Chatroom/Citizenship at Theatre Royal.

The strain of dealing with an authority figure could drain you emotionally. You might be considering resigning from an organisation. Before doing anything drastic make one more effort to solve an ongoing difficulty and why an unofficial gathering might help re-establish a sense of goodwill between warring parties. How do you get other people to understand you need more space and time to do your own thing? The answer is very simple: you tell them how you feel! If you have been putting yourself out for others recently, you now need more independence and a little privacy too. You must put your feelings into words.

CAPRICORN - 22 DECEMBER - 20 JANUARY

It’s not a good idea to get too emotionally involved in a friend or workmate’s problems. Your natural good nature and eagerness to help might lead you to make a hasty commitment you may later come to regret. You should be completely open and honest in all business or official matters. A loved one might start to feel more than a little piqued and neglected with you being so busy in other areas.

Bashing the “bloodthirsty” Bible THE REV Debbie Gaston (Letters, Issue 11) implies that the Bible, one of the many holy books, is open to interpretation. But the vast majority of Christians believe it is the divine word of their god. Some who are embarrassed by its ludicrous and bloodthirsty contents try to make its message “relevant” to modern times. They interpret the Bible to suit their argument. Debbie Gaston’s assertion that in the time of Jesus all women were treated as second-class citizens is not entirely correct. In Greek and Roman society, they were often educated, enjoying a position of dignity and independence. The rise of Christianity heralded a dark age for woman. Paul, the apostle and founder of Christianity, told his followers: “I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority Let your women keep silent in church, for it is not permitted unto them to speak.” And addressing women directly: “Submit yourselves to your husbands.” Jesus of the New Testament is in no way superior to the ignorant peasantry. His teachings consisted of vague and useless platitudes. He believed in foolishness like legions of angels and demonic possession, blind faith instead of rational enquiry. James Newman

1 St Ann’s Court, Nizells Avenue THE POET Lord Alfred Douglas (1870-1945) spent his declining years at 1 St Ann’s Court, Nizells Avenue, Hove. Most famous as a beautiful Oxford undergraduate and the love of Oscar Wilde (some would say Nemesis), Douglas’s glory days were long behind him when he was living in Hove – as were a prison sentence for libelling Winston Churchill and an unhappy marriage to fellow poet Olive Custance. But his poem, Two Loves will always be remembered for putting into the English language the term that for decades defined homosexuality: The love that dare not speak its name.

IN RESPONSE to the article on the “new gay hate law” (one80news Issue 11) we’re pleased that legislation is catching up with expectations of a modern Britain. As with all legislation, the statute is not as effective until social attitudes catch up. It’s an age old issue: the law states that we should behave in a particular way and then society catches up. This has been seen through two centuries from public health, voting rights for women, race relations, people living with disabilities and now LGBT rights. All these issues have been strongly contested by opposition groups. These laws only work when those working on the ground believe in their relevance. In Brighton and Hove we’re lucky to have supportive police who work hard to prosecute those caught inciting hatred or physical/verbal abuse to any minority. That’s what makes Brighton and Hove such a fantastic place. It is alarming to hear of our friends being victims of crime and discrimination but the True Vision Packs that the police distribute help us report crimes directly or anonymously and they are sensitive to the needs of our community. Victims of discrimination or crimes can come to the office at Terrence Higgins Trust or book a Face2Face appointment. We aim to help people come to terms with what has happened and assist them in reporting such crimes or to refer them to appropriate agencies. Any legislation which helps society to stamp out prejuduce has to be applauded; it’s a clear indicator that there is social change afoot. Geoff Cook Terrence Higgins Trust
