First-of-its-kind skills planning in SA
Introduction The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) was established by the President on 7 July 2009 in terms of Proclamation 48 (2009). It was created from parts of two national government departments, the former Department of Education (DoE) and the Department of Labour (DoL). All the functions pertaining to Higher Education, Further Education, Adult Education, Qualifications, and Skills Development, which had been located in the former DoE and DoL were absorbed into the newly formed DHET.

About the NQF
About the SETAs
The Minister of Higher Education and Training is responsible for the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) which provides an organising mechanism for qualifications across the entire Education and Training system in the country, including Basic Education.
The Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) manage Skills Levy Funds by facilitating training at the workplace, and supporting education and training programmes at public education and training institutions.

Delivery was further strengthened by the Internal Continuous Assessment (ICASS) guidelines and the introduction of an attendance policy and ICASS subminimum as minimum entry requirements for national examinations. These are recent developments and are being implemented to address performance at TVET Colleges. The DHET carries out all quality assurance of N4-N6 including the National N Diploma. A Dual System Apprenticeship pilot project is being implemented based on the German-Swiss dual system model. Three TVET Colleges and three SETAs as well as a range of employers are involved.
9 community colleges established 3,276 public adult learning centres consolidated into 9 colleges
Formerly known as Further Education and Training [FET] colleges, these were transferred from the provinces to the DHET as a national competence in 2015.

BUILDING CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS
• Make it about the customer and not the product. Traditionally, product is pushed onto the customer. Now, brands can take what customers are looking for and translate it into something meaningful for the customer. For example, a bank could either push their savings products onto a customer or, through social media, they could share money saving tips which shows overall concern for the customers’ well-being and financial health.
• Encourage feedback and listening. Customers like to feel that their thoughts and opinions are valued and considered. Through listening to customers, they become participative collaborators in the life of a brand. For example, Lays Potato Chips asked people to help create the next chip flavour. The campaign resulted in eight million new chip flavour suggestions world-wide.

• Responding to customers who have chosen to engage with the
brand is paramount to building customer relationships. Customers do not like to be ignored as it makes them feel unimportant and undervalued. By being responsive, even in negative situations, brands build trust and integrity with their customers.
How brands build customer relationships • Making it easy for the customer to share their story: Allowing customers to share their stories unites communities and taps into people on an emotional level. Great stories encourage great interaction and sharing which all contribute to creating a loyal following of customers.
• By means of inspiring people through connecting them to each other so that they may share daily wins and struggles in overcoming obstacles. For example, Nikerun.

• Delete the incorrect tweet/post (unless it contains sensitive personal information)
• Following advice and instruction from the brand team, apologise to the user directly by @reply tweet and send a DM in a personal manner about the mistake
• Try to cover up the mistake - if a post has to be deleted, own up to it and post a message explaining the reason for the deletion (after the brand team has advised)
• Get hold of a social listening partner to monitor the virality of the mistake
• @reply to any retweets about the issue, only discuss the issue with the customer
• When the issue is resolved, broadcast the steps it took to fix the issue

ometimes it’s not easy to be ingenious when it comes to coordinating incentives that are more outstanding than before, or delivering the most imaginative events in impressive locations. According to received wisdom, the highest expression of genius is originality – an ever-rising benchmark for event organisers – which is why, inside this edition of The MICE Report, innovation is the watchword. Fresh perspectives on familiar locations can provide some bold results, and we take a revolutionary look at that all-time avant-garde favourite: Paris. With a summer programme teeming with cultural events, we reveal the highlights and top business hotels in the ‘City of Lights’. Rediscovering Europe, we report on the environmental and financial advantages of European conferencing, and explore the stately capitals of Stockholm and Bratislava. Pioneering eastward, we travel to the Arabian Peninsula and encounter the rich heritage and luxurious hospitality of Qatar as a modern business destination. Our global journey to new MICE frontiers takes in Ghana, Montenegro, and the cosmic conference facilities in Houston, headquarters of NASA. For the most recent innovations in event administration, we review MasterCard’s ground-breaking partnership solutions and online tools for the effective management of meetings expenditure, and reveal the latest sure-fire strategies for delivering a perfect meeting every time. Although international travel can take its toll on the health of business travellers, we uncover the hottest nutritional tips for keeping fit, focussed and stress-free while on the move. And, as medical tourism becomes a worldwide phenomenon, we take a detailed look at the incentives of combining medical or cosmetic treatment abroad with a well-deserved vacation. If originality is the highest mark of genius, then this edition of The MICE Report is a valuable master class in the art of inventive event management.

REVOLUTIONARY
PARIS
As one of the world’s most recognisable cities, Paris continues to seduce the international traveller with its innate originality and indomitable sense of style. Cliff James investigates the charms of the city that sets the standard for MICE hospitality.
E
veryone thinks they know Paris. From the gothic austerity of Notre Dame and the iconic Eiffel Tower to the pompous grandeur of the Louvre, the very mention of Paris conjures up a panoramic cliché of classic architecture, romantic boulevards and avant-garde artists drinking carafes of wine in the louche cafés of Montmartre. The cliché may be successful, as Paris attracts more than 45 million business visitors and tourists each year, with the Eiffel Tower being the single most visited monument in the world. But it is also a city of unparalleled originality and, time and again, the creative culture of the city triumphs over its own stereotype. The sheer scale of ground-breaking exhibitions, festivals and events ensures that the City of Light is constantly reinventing itself – and

explains why the city remains a leading destination for MICE customers. Business travellers to the French capital this summer will have access to an immense range of cultural activities as the city bursts into artistic and creative bloom as never before. The high-tech Pompidou Centre, always at the forefront of pioneering art, has recently extended one of its most unmissable exhibitions until next year due to its remarkable success. The Elles@centrepompidou exhibition is one of the biggest collections by female modern artists ever compiled, showcasing more than 500 objects by award-winning artists such as Annette Messager, abstract sculptor Louise Bourgois and the renowned painter Frida Kahlo. This worldclass display runs at the Pompidou Centre until February 2011.

On a scorching summe r day, history-lovers with a taste for the macabr e can descend into the chilly depths and explore a sinister side of Paris on a tour of the awe-inspiring Catacombes de Paris. Built in the 18th century on the Avenue du Colonel Henri RolTanguy, the bones of more than six million Parisians from the city’s overpop ulated cemeteries are laid out in a labyrinth of obscure galleries. Lecture s and story-telling tours are available to groups throughout the year.

For the MICE client seeking light relief from their own gruesome schedu les, Paris chills through out August with the Pianissi mo Jazz Festival at the Sunset/Sunrise music club, 60 Rue des Lombar d. This annual jazz festival showcases the cream of international bands on stylishly intimate stages within the legendary jazz club. The Jazz à la Villette festival picks up where the Pianissimo leaves off, with a celebration of experimental jazz from the likes of Jimi Tenor, Gil Scott-Heron and Napoleon
Cole Porter famousl y said that he loved Paris in the summer, “when it sizzles”, and the sensatio nal al fresco culture really heats up from July right through to the autumn with an array of outdoor events. A Mediterranean beach – Paris Plage – appears on the banks of the Seine and the Bassin de la Villette until 20th August, complete with sand dunes, boating, outdoor bars and cafes. In the balmy evenings, the ultramo dern Parc de la Villette turns into an open-air Cinema Festival, where visitors can spread out picnics and enjoy their favourite films until 22nd August. Le Festival d’Autom ne à Paris (the Paris Autumn Festival) transforms countless public spaces and venues of the city into a sweltering celebra tion of contemporary theatre, music, dance and visual arts from 1st Septem ber to 31st December. The open-air lifestyle is cultivated in the Bois de Boulogne, Paris’s western park, which is more than twice the size of New York’s Central Park. From May to October , the gardens are an exquisite backdrop to a festival of Renaissance theatre, where plays by Shakesp eare are performed in both English and French – a dream of a mid-sum mer night’s entertainment. The City of Light – so called because of the abundance of night-tim e illuminations – also received its nicknam e because of its fame as a centre of scientific ideas during the Age of Enlighte nment. It is fitting that one of the world’s most ambitious exhibitions on the origin of the universe is displaye d in Paris’s Cité des Sciences – Europe’ s largest science museum. P
ut simply, the student property market is booming. The number of those studying for undergraduate and post-graduate degree courses has increased greatly in recent years, as well as a marked increase in overseas students – a five-fold increase between 1975 and 2008. Furthermore, there has been a historic and increasing trend of chronic structural undersupply within this £20 billion and rising sector.

property investment sector”, consistently outperforming traditional buy-to-let and other asset classes in terms of both rental yield and capital growth. Developers have taken on the challenge of undersupply and widened the range and type of properties available, including high quality ‘boutique’ residences. In the main this has been achieved by a twin strategy of building new capacity as well as purchasing existing halls from universities and giving them a funky twenty-first century make over.
Today’s students have higher expectations than previous generations, seeking high-quality accommodation compatible with modern student lifestyles, with a range of on-site facilities and a more of a genuine sense of community than traditional privately rented ‘digs’.

Bpec & Logic Unvented Hot Water Storage Systems £224.25 inc VAT The BPec Unvented Hot Water Storage Systems course offers the training and assessment for the installation of Unvented Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems. The courses are designed to meet the training requirements of the appropriate Building Regulations and Standards. The training materials in the area of Unvented Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems consist of two different manuals, targeting England & Wales and Scotland, respectively. The Scottish version is very similar to the English one, however, some regulations differ and candidates north of the border thus need a separate training manual. For England & Wales, the training manual provides an introduction to and understanding of the requirements of the Approved Document G3, Part L1 and Part P of the Building Regulations. For Scotland, the manual is very similar but references Part J of the Building Standards. Both training manuals consist of 4 modules covering: • Unvented systems and their operating principles • Design and installation
• Maintenance • Compliance with other Building Regulations
The prerequisite for attending the courses is that the person holds a recognised trade qualification or is working towards one (this can include the C&G 6129 cert) or has evidence of a number of
“
years of experience of working in the plumbing or heating industry. The training course is very comprehensive and kicks off with intensive training in the 4 modules, followed by the completion of three assessments. There is one practical assessment involved in the course. Candidates must successfully pass all three assessments in order to gain the Bpec Unvented Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems certificate and competency card. The course is targeting operatives who wish to install Unvented Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems. Successful completion of the assessment will allow the installer to demonstrate their competence in the installation of Unvented Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems in order to join a Competent Persons’ Scheme which will allow the self-certification of installations. If the installer does not wish to join such a scheme it will demonstrate competency to the local Building Control department when submitting Building Control Notices prior to commencing work. Other courses available, which compliment Unvented Hot Water are:-
• Bpec water regs • Bpec building regs • Bpec Solar hot water installer • Bpec Part L energy efficiency • Bpec Ground Source Heat pump installer • Bpec Underfloor Heating Installer
