Zwelethu Mthethwa was born in 1960 in Empangeni, Kwa-Zulu Natal. His father would have liked him to become a policeman but Zwelethu indicated at an early age that he wanted to become an artist. He is a nationally and internationally renowned painter and photographer. He graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town. He received a Fulbright Scholarship to the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he received his Master’s Degree in Imaging Arts in 1989. Upon returning home, he worked for some years in business and then became a lecturer in photography and drawing at Michaelis in 1994, a post especially ƺɨljƃɽljǁ ǹɁɨ ȃȈȴ ƃɰ ɽȃlj ˎɨɰɽ 9Ȣƃƺȟ Ȣljƺɽʍɨljɨ ƃɽ ÃȈƺȃƃljȢȈɰ ƃɽ ɽȃƃɽ ɽȈȴljӝ He left the post in 1999 to devote himself full-time to his art.
