Zoe is in a shop in London. She’s found a sweater that would fit Fiona, her cousin, so well. But the size is not right. She goes to the shop assistant to ask for a smaller size. Shop assistant: Hello. Is there something I can help you with? Zoe: Yes, do you have this sweater in a size smaller, do you think? Shop assistant: Let me see. This is L for large. What were you thinking of? M or S? Zoe: Well, it’s for my cousin. She’s about my size, I should think. Shop assistant: Well, that would be small, don’t you think? Or do you like your sweaters a bit baggy? Zoe: A bit baggy, I think. Shop assistant: OK, it’s medium, then. But would another colour do? I think I’ve just got blue left. Zoe: That’s wonderful. I love blue. How much is it? Shop assistant: You’re in luck. We have a special offer on those. It’s 20 % off right now. So that’ll be ... £15, alright? Zoe: OK, this will make Fiona very happy, I think. Shop assistant: I hope so. Would you like it gift-wrapped or should I just put in a bag? Zoe: Gift-wrap, please. Shop assistant: Ok, just a minute. There it is! Thank you and have a nice day! Next, please!

Zoe has travelled to Manchester many times to see her cousins. She always travels by plane. Zoe has often travelled all by herself, even though she doesn’t like it and thinks it is quite frightening to fly. But Zoe uses her magic trick. She thinks of her golden egg. The golden egg helps her whenever she feels frightened of something, like travelling by herself on a plane. She closes her eyes, takes three deep breaths and imagines holding a heavy, chilled and very smooth golden egg. Inside the golden egg lies all her secrets, her wishes, her sorrows, her frights and hopes, and it is totally safe there! Only she can open the golden egg, nobody else! It is magic! And it really helps her when she is frightened. Are you frightened of something, maybe? – Spiders, bats, or to speak out loud in front of your class? Now you know a magic trick! One day when the pirates had taken an English ship, Anne saw a handsome young man among the sailors. She wanted to get to know him better. But to her surprise, the man turned out to be another woman, Mary Reade. She also joined Rackham’s crew. Now there were two tough women on Rackham’s pirate ship! When Rackham and his crew fought in battles, the two women fought just as hard as the men, and they yelled: “If you are men, fight like the men you are!” So you see, girls can be as tough as nails, tougher than the toughest sea pirate.

In the northern hemisphere, moss will grow on the northern side of the tree trunk, where it is shadier. 5 Trees are masters of both selfdefence and communication! If insects attack them, some trees can fill their leaves with chemicals and “signal a warning to other trees nearby to do the same.

A New Invention

R

The rainbow pen Are you tired of having a lot of crayons in different colours? A company in California has invented a new pen that they call the Scribble Pen. You may draw or write in any colour. You hold the pen up to something with a colour you like, for example an orange, and then use the pen on a sheet of paper and the colour will be orange! And there’s more: the pen can be used on paper with real ink and it can be used on a smartphone or a tablet! No more broken crayons and no more missing colours. And all that fun for a thousand kroner!

Zoe is going to spend Christmas with her family in England this year. It will be her first time. She is very excited and can hardly wait! Fiona, her cousin, wrote an e-mail telling her about their Christmas traditions. She thought it would be a good idea for Zoe to be prepared. Fiona wrote:

Hello Zoe! How are you? I can’t wait to see you! I thought I’d tell you a little about our family’s Christmas celebration, because they might be a bit different from what you are used to in Norway. On Christmas Eve we usually stay in the house doing the last Christmas preparations. It is always a bit hectic! Mum puts up our Christmas stockings by the fireplace, for Father Christmas to fill up with presents during the night. I will make sure she remembers your stocking as well! Daniel and I usually spend some time wrapping up presents before we go carol singing with friends and neighbours. We also put out mince pies and milk for Father Christmas and his reindeers. Every year, Daniel and I try to stay awake to see him drop off the presents, but we always fall asleep! On Christmas Day we usually wake up quite early and head downstairs to the living room to open our presents. Oh, it’s a thrill! It’s so exciting! Daniel always tears off the wrapping on his presents. – And can you imagine, Mum and Dad lets us eat chocolate before breakfast! Let me tell you, it is the best day you can wish for! After breakfast we get to play with our presents and later on Dad plays board games with us. He is, by the way, a bad loser! For dinner we have turkey with chestnut stuffing! Mmmm! I love it! Get ready for your English Christmas celebration, Zoe! And see you soon! Lots of love, Fiona

Chapter 16 The Roman Calendar

PL

AR

The old Roman calendar had 10 months to begin with, not 12 as we are used to today. August used to be the sixth month in this calendar and was called Sextilis in Latin. Several of the months in the year were named after the number they had:

SE K

It is a bit strange that the last and twelfth month of the year was really called “Tenember”! January is named after the Roman god Janus. January is the first month of the year and Janus was the god of beginnings. He had two faces, since he looked to the future and to the past. In the month of March, the Romans sowed their fields and went to war. No wonder that March is named after the god of farming and war: Mars! The month of July is named after Julius Caesar, the Roman general; He was born in this month. Julius also changed the calendar. Augustus was the first Roman emperor. When Julius Caesar got his own month, Augustus had to have his month as well, so he changed “Sixtilis” to August. If you had been an emperor, which month would you like and what would it be called?

Chapter 17 Dead as a Dodo

SE M

PL

AR

There were no people on the island and the dodo had no other enemies. The first mention of the dodo was by sailors on a ship in 1598. After that, the birds were hunted by sailors who came to the island. Dogs and rats from the ships started eating the dodos’ eggs. The dodos couldn’t fly away and were killed on the ground. Soon all of them were gone, extinct. They were “dead as dodos”.

SE K

The dodo is one of the best-known extinct animals. Maybe because it looks a bit strange and is easy to recognise, it is often mentioned in books, comics, films etc. The expression “dead as a dodo”, means that something is completely gone and will never come back. The dodo bird lived on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It was very big and couldn’t fly so it lived on the ground and ate fruits that had fallen from trees.

Once upon a time there was a king, and he had a little daughter called Sabra. One day a terrible dragon came from the mountains. It was black with angry red eyes and it breathed fire. “You have to give me a small girl to eat every day, or else I will kill you all!” the dragon said. The king’s daughter, Sabra, said: “I’ll go. If the dragon has a princess, he will ask for no other child.” The king was sad. His advisers said: “We will release a pigeon. If it goes north, south or west, we will not give the princess to the dragon.” But the pigeon flew straight to the east. The princess was tied to a tree so the dragon could come and get her. But the pigeon had a plan. He flew to a brave knight in the east. The knight was called George and he followed the pigeon back. George saw the dragon. The dragon’s breath was so hot it burned the knight and the smoke from its nostrils blinded his eyes. The knight broke his spear on the dragon’s scales which were as hard as steel. But he didn’t give up. The knight saw that the dragon tried to protect a spot under its left wing. The knight was so tired. He put all his strength in one mighty blow and with his spear he hit the soft spot under the dragon’s wing. With a roar the great dragon fell to the ground. The dragon was dead and George had won! The people and the king were so happy when the knight returned with Princess Sabra.

Rosa Parks was a very brave black woman who lived in Alabama, a Southern state in the USA. Her courage changed the lives of many black Americans in the 1950s and 1960s. The city of Montgomery, Alabama, was segregated in those days. That meant that things were different for white people and black people. They had different schools, different churches, different shops, and even different drinking fountains. All the things that white Americans could use were much better than the things made for black Americans. Places often had signs saying “For Colored Only” or “For Whites Only”. Rosa Parks took the bus to work every day. She would have to sit in the back seats marked “for Colored”, the worst seats in the bus. Sometimes she would have to stand even if there were free seats in the front, because these seats were meant for the whites. She would also have to give up her seat if a white person wanted to sit at the back. That is what the law said. But on December 1st 1955, Rosa did something different. She refused to give up her seat to a white passenger! Rosa got arrested for not obeying the law.

42

Rosa’s decision not to give up her bus seat that day was the beginning of a fight for equal rights for all people in the USA, called the Civil Rights Movement. Rosa Parks became an inspiration to people who fight for justice everywhere in the world.
