THE HOUSE OF SILENT SCREAMS Tracing untold and lost stories of the Colonial Era

+ Is a single story enough to understand a place? How vulnerable are we in the face of a single story? All places are rich with diverse histories and stories waiting to be unearthed. But do all stories find an expression in mainstream narratives? This thesis set in Dutch Cemetery, Fort Kochi Kerala-India explores the power of architecture to question stereotypes, capture obscure traces and ‘retell’ lost stories. This thesis uses architecture as a tool to create a hypothetical setting where the dominant and suppressed narratives collide in the space of the Dutch Cemetery. The design uses archetypes like the ‘ruins’, ‘towers’ , ‘labyrinths’, ‘gardens’ and ‘bridges’ to constantly evoke disruptive and contemplative experiences ranging from ‘uncanny’ to ‘peace’. The project seeks to create dislocating and uncanny spaces by distorting familiar forms. The thesis hopes that a critical engagement of stories, memories, place in this design will reignite the debate on why ‘all’ stories need to be told, heard and experienced.

Thesis | Fort Kochi

The cemetery though long overshadowed has been a silent observer of the cities past. Since this thesis roots the underlying theory from the idea of architectural uncanny, a site like cemetery falls fit for this exploration. The site being currently on the Biennale path is abandoned and is an artefact in the landscape of Fort Kochi.

Reinventing Industrial Imagery

+ The project looks breaking away from the typical imagery portrayed by an industry. It looks at the rigid imagery which lacks new design challenges and uses the similar material and detailing techniques to generate dynamic industrial types. The initial inspiration was the linear dynamics of reptilian endoskeletons (eels, snake) which was relevant to the shape of the site. Site forces like neighbouring school and industries, shaped the basic zoning and views from the site determined the building’s placement. The goal was to have the building appear afloat when viewed from the pipeline road. The linear axis of the industry was turned at certain points to create points of surprise and not reveal everything at once. It also emphasized the fluidity of the form. The spine of the building holds it in place and changes in height at every interval. The processing forms the major part of the industry and the other auxiliary facilities are like plug-ins to this main axis.

Interior Design

BLACK NOTE A Jazz Bar and Store-front

+ The given program had to serve two major commercial components of sell and entertain and the interiors are worked out for this hybrid. The idea was to challenge the tight hybrid site given with some interiors that break away from the rigidity. The dynamic and rhythmic forms of the interiors derives its inspiration from jazz music. The entire theme is worked out taking inspiration from old jazz bars which are dimly lit and the staging area forms the locus of program zoning. The logo is worked out in a similar manner and hence throws light on two major activities the interiors serve. The program focuses on jazz music as the entertaining component and a jazz instrument store front as a selling unit to create a hybrid commercial space. The idea is to involve people of different age groups to learn and enjoy jazz music with a small bar component as an add on. The project studies branding and point of sell with music as focus and generates a spatial model as a result of the study.

Housing | JP Nagar, Bangalore

REVAMPED Transformable housing for ISRO

+ The project looked at a housing proposal for ISRO employees in Bangalore. The main idea revolves around transformable housing, where the idea of giving an independent villa space for each house in a vertical apartment is tackled. The spaces generated are flexible in nature with an outdoor garden that can be utilised for various activities or converted into a full pledged room according to need. The apartment unit works with modules of two bhk and three bhk flats which are interlocked to create terrace spaces on each level. The master planning of the mixed housing typology include apartments, villaments, row houses, visitor’s flats etc. Other facilities like club house are set atop a bridge that rests on top of the apartment block. The overall planning of the master zoning is inward looking to create pause points and areas of gathering for interaction.

Campus Design | Kolar

OVERHAULED An extension to Agastya Foundation, Kolar

+ The project looks at redesigning an extension to the currently situated Agastya Foundation at KGF. The site is rich with flora and fauna and is mountainous terrain slopping variously on a stretch of 172 acre master plan. The concept revolves around the idea of using water as a symbolic element in the context which is water scarce. The land-use pattern is generated by connecting all the bore-well points on the master plan level. This bore-well points are then converted to plazas based on their location on the site. The bore well points are also converted to water harvesting towers which also act as symbolic markers on site. The two bore well points are converted to a library and a main plaza surrounded by all the built components. Each building responds to the surrounding views, the plazas and mainly the water axis that runs centrally. The project also targets the user groups of the program who are school students of an experimental education system. The school motive is to take education to the students. Hence an experimental module of schooling is generated where in the students can develop their own spaces of learning.

SMVIT LIBRARY Proposed Library at Yelahanka, Bangalore

+ The physical model making exercise was taken as part of the professional training and the objective was to understand the developmental stages of the proposed SMVIT library- Bangalore. The deeper understanding gained by the model was the physical (elevation) and structural aspects of the ongoing project. The model become a necessity in understanding the various design features of the building, its frontal and rare relation to the neighboring buildings and its impact, both ecologically and physically in the context it is situated in. The model was broken into various layers to understand the structural appearance of the building. This exercise was important and gave various insights both academically and practically. It highlighted the importance of physical model making in practice not just as an added requirement but rather as a necessary tool to get deeper understandings of the building with its context and the dimensional aspects which otherwise are not noticed in a virtual model.

SONIGERA

Villaments at VV Puram , Bangalore

+ The Villaments units are stalked up with balcony spaces that form the exterior faรงade of the building. The dividing walls are further curved to enhance the elevation and are treated differently at each level to create uniqueness in the faรงade. This curves are embodied as brick walls which are plastered to give a seamless finish to the curve. The sandstone finish is divided with thin grooves that break the monolith curved walls into smaller curved segments providing spaces for light. Scope of Work: Drafting the detailed elevations and detailing the part plans and sections to define the values of curves. Detailing of curved elements to rationalise the curve bends and understanding the idea of using brick for curved walls. Working drawings for the elevation in the form of part plans and sections.

BABU REDDY RESIDENCE Residential Interiors , Bangalore

+ The interiors drawings are worked out for the master bedroom of Babu Reddy residence. The take on the interiors is kept subtle with minimal expression of the beds head board and a board that has vertical beadings covering the entire back wall. The idea was to cover the air conditioning ducts with the same beaded board and flushing the service door to create a seamless finish to the entire wall. The color palette chosen is kept minimal by using blush tones and highlighting the space with a statement purple grey carpet placed centrally. Scope of work: Designing the wall board and detailing a method to flush all the surfaces of the wall together. Detailed interior drawings for the head board and the wall board. Detailed Plans and sections with wall chasing details, fixture details and false ceiling drawings.

NATION WANTS TO KNOW A Bharat ki Khoj series

+ This series of graphics where done in collaboration with pulp.live, an online urban magazine narrating stories. The graphic narrated is of Indian broadcast media-its history and the current scenario under the title Bharat Ki Khoj-Nation wants to know. The idea targeted by the graphics is that news channels now have turned out to be mere entertainment platforms for people to enjoy. The graphic specifically targets this particular theatric quotient in current news scenario. The constant compulsion to create new and exciting information for the heck of it is only causing further damage. The bigger picture of the overall narrative is that, over-time the news and the information that is getting passed on is nothing but absolute nuisance.

NAUTILUS SERIES A fine art series

+ Nautilus is a series of fluid lines that represent and form a picture. This intricate art work is further illustrated for wall papers and posters. The idea uses the continual curves derived from a base nautilus curve and draws a picture formed by a set of curves varying in width and size. The series is undertaken to use curves only as tool and medium to illustrate a drawing hence making it unique.
