Honorably discharged Where did Veteran Serve: South Pacific — Guam, Saipan, Tinian (he saw Enola Gay Bomber), Mariana Islands Service Highlights: Balzer was World War II youngest journeyman pattern maker at Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co. Deferred for building 10 submarines, June 6, 1943. He enlisted in Navy CB’s as carpenter mate. Had one week to settle affairs in Marinette Shipbuilding Co. They phoned him to return — he was their property and the company had to build 10 more subs. The Navy took the case to court and said Balzer belonged to the Navy. The Navy lost the case. He served in the vicinity of Baguio in the Philippines as well as Himeji and Wakayama, Japan near Hiroshima arriving just after the bomb was dropped. He also worked with the Air Corp Engineers building a New Airstrip in Japan. Hometown: Newton Branch of Service: U.S. Marine Corps, Company A, First Engineering Battalion, First Marine Division Years of Service: 4 (Sept. 1, 1965 to Sept. 1, 1969) Served in Vietnam for 1 year, 8 months and 2 days Military Installations where served: Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Vietnam Service Highlights: Bauer’s unit made a beach landing at Chu Lai, Vietnam, and worked with combat engineers to help build the Chu Lai Base. He also participated in clearing roads of mines where Bauer did mine sweeping and booby-trap removals as well as patrols. He also participated in the Wyoming Operation, Colorado Operation and Jackson Operation where the unit earned a Presidential Unit Citation. Upon returning to the states, he finished his time instructing new recruits in land mine warfare, booby-trap removal and guerilla warfare. His plane was shot down on April 2, 1944, near Steyr, Austria. He was one of two surviving crewmembers out of 10. After being treated for injuries, Blitz was held as a prisoner of war at camp, Stalag 17B, for one year. Hometown: Manitowoc Branch of Service: U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve Years of Service: Enlisted Feb. 25, 1943; retired in 1967 Service Highlights: Enlisted Feb. 25, 1943, serving with the Co C 324th Infantry, 44th Division as an infantryman fighting in the Rhineland, northern France and Central Europe. Twice he was awarded the Bronze Star medal — given for bravery, heroism and meritorious service. He was wounded in December 1944 and received the Purple Heart medal. He completed his first active duty tour Nov. 7, 1945. Transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve where he served with the Reserve unit in Manitowoc until being ordered back up to active duty on Dec. 5, 1949. He served with Battery B, 231st Army Field Artillery Battalion, 6th Armored Division at Fort Leonardwood, Mo., until going to South Korea with the Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment. He had reported for duty in South Korea as a master sergeant but came home as a 1st Lieutenant. He returned home to his reserve unit in Manitowoc where he eventually became a captain. He then served as the unit commander for many years. He was transferred to the U. S. Army Reserve Retired in 1967. He was known by many because of his political career. Service Highlights: I began my Air Force career as an aircrew member (Loadmaster) on the C-141 Airlifter assigned to the 76th Military Airlift Squadron, Charleston, S.C. This job provided some of the most enjoyable, and at the same time, the saddest moments in my career. Logging more than 1,500 flying hours, I was fortunate enough to fly to all parts of the world in support of the goals and missions of the United States. However, at the same time, I had the responsibility of bringing home our wounded and deceased young men and women from the Vietnam War. These unforgettable aero medical evacuation missions still leave a lasting impression on what war can do to people and a Nation. Other highlights of my career include being a Training Manager for organization that included: Civil Engineering, Avionics maintenance and Air Base Support. Special Assignments are just that, special. Serving in two special assignments provided some very challenging and rewarding moments. The first was as an Advisor for the Air Force On-the Job training Programs worldwide. There were only 90 advisers whose job was to provide consulting services to all regular, Reserve and Guard units on the concepts and processes of training personnel. The second special assignment was as a 1st Sgt., the leader of all enlisted members of an Air Force organization. I was fortunate enough to be selected as the 1st Sgt. to the Year of the 23rd Air Force, Military Airlift Command, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. The rewards of this position were immeasurable. I served as Superintendent of a Correctional Custody and Rehabilitation Center and finished my career in the Air Force as the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the Maintenance Training Section, Headquarters Military Airlift Command, Scott Air Force Base, Belleville, Ill. in 1990. Where did Veteran Serve: Basic Training: Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas; Tech School: Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; Duty Station: Royal Air Force Mildenhall, England; Served in the 100th Civil Engineering Squadron at RAF Mildenhall from March 2001 to September 2004 as a Maintenance Engineer. Service Highlights: Maintenance Engineers worked with Computer Aided Drafting software as well as Geographical Information Systems (GIS). We maintained records of every buildings floor plan on base as well as tasked with the upkeep of the base map and base development map which included surveying new construction of buildings, roads, and utilities, as well as including old construction that had not been included with past maps. Pilots and aircrews depended on the surveying skills of maintenance engineers as well; anytime a plane had too hard of a landing the surveying expertise of the maintenance engineering squadron was called upon to ensure the aircraft’s airframe was still within design specifications/ tolerances. Wartime role consisted of laying out the bare base design at the forwarded area as well as securing local contractors and managing those contracts for the duration of the deployment. Senior Airman Knutson was also awarded with Airman of the Year in 2003 for his hard work and dedication.

For 2½ years, Leonard moved from camp to camp in Germany including Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Munich, Dusseldorf, Nurnberg, Cologne, Frankfort, Bonn, and boat rides down the Rhine River. On weekends, he was part of the Special Services where he played baseball games within the camps. He played catcher, right field, second base and coached. He was befriended and played with Russ Peters who played major league baseball with the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Indians. The attached photo was taken in 1945 in Frankfort, Germany just after the war while Leonard played on the Unicorn baseball team of the 6th Division of the U. S. Army. He landed at Omaha Beach in June 1944. Arnie was taken prisoner by the German Army on Oct. 22, 1944 and spent seven and a half months in three different camps as a prisoner of war. Three days before the war ended, he and eight friends escaped from Camp Stalag 3B located in Furstenberg, Germany. Arnie celebrated his 89th birthday this past July. Submitted By: Richard Malek

He was a part of the “Chosen Frozen,” aka the Chosen Reservoir, during November and December of 1950. Stan also went to Japan in April 1949 for active duty. Hometown: Polish Hill Branch of Service: U.S. Army Years of Service: Four years as a member of Company B of the 7th Infantry Division Where did Veteran Serve: Pacific Theater Aleutian Islands, Marshall, Philippines and Okinawa Service Highlights: For the final assault on Okinawa, the 7th joined the 9th and the 27th, and two Marine Divisions, the 1st and the 6th. This was the first breakthrough on the East Coast and was the beginning of the end for Japan. Going into that campaign, only 18 men remained in the company that left for the U.S. with Art. Art received two Purple Hearts with cluster (bayonet wound to the arm and a leg wound from foxhole shellings). Douglas McArthur asked the 7th Division to help secure the situation in Korea. Platoon Sgt. Eugene Mrotek
Hometown: Polish Hill Branch of Service: U.S. Army Years of Service: Enlisted right after Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941. He served a total of 40 months in company C of the 320th Engineers Battalion. Where did Veteran Serve: Rhineland, Germany, Northern France and Central Europe Service Highlights: Awarded two Purple Hearts with oak leaves clusters, Bronze Star, and ETO Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars. On June 6, 1945, he was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement. From Jan. 3-23, 1945, in the vicinity of Saarlauter, Germany, there were three weeks of constant threat of enemy artillery. Eugene directed his platoon in the construction of a fixed bridge to supplement a captured bridge. The river was freezing and thawing and continued water level changes with frequent barrages of enemy fire. They accomplished the task, but many men died or were wounded. One day, while driving a superior officer, Eugene went over a land mine, which exploded. The officer was killed and Eugene was left for dead. His dog tags were retrieved and handed in. Another party came and found him still alive and transported him to a hospital. Submitted By: Kay Felde

Where did Veteran Serve: Rhineland and Central Europe Service Highlights: Received the Bronze Star for valiantly serving in action. On Jan. 30, 1945, when the American Army was advancing on Wurzburg, and things were not going well resulting in many casualties, they had to retreat for a time. Max advanced through machine gun fire and grenades to save a wounded soldier and brought him back to get medical attention. He went back again through the lines and retrieved another wounded soldier. Both soldiers’ lives were saved. After the war was over, Max was part of the army of occupation. During this time, he was part of the Army football team. He was selected as part of the All Star team. Service Highlights: Constructed telephone lines for air installations from which our pilots flew over the hump, Himalayan Mountains. Survived strafing by Japanese planes. Best friend right next to him did not. Faithfully used mosquito net nightly; never got malaria. November 1944 returned to U.S. by way of Atlantic completing trip around the world. K 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He was taken prisoner after this unit was surrounded while fighting enemy forces near Unsan, North Korea on Nov. 2, 1950. We Salute Community Thanksgiving Dinner Our Veterans Thursday, November 24 Serving Family Style
Hometown: Manitowoc Where did Veteran Serve: World War II Service Highlights: Last school year for our English research paper we had to come up with a topic that interested us. I have always been interested in how my Grandpa (I call him Poppa) felt that the B-24 Liberators influenced the outcome of WWII. You see, my Poppa, Ralph Skarda, was a Technical Sgt. and was a radio operator with the 446th Bombardment Group B-24 Liberator. He flew on 23 missions and 29 practice missions from Bungay, England to Germany in 1943. When I interviewed him for my paper and video, I came to understand how important these missions helped to cripple the advancement of the Germans through Europe by bombing their refineries and other war resources. Poppa was only 18 when he went to war. He put his college education on hold to join the Air Force during WWII. He told me about a lot of scary experiences that he had and some funny stories, too. I am so happy that he is able to share his stories with me. It has made me understand all the sacrifices that our men and women had made during WWII that I otherwise wouldn’t have known. I am very proud of my Poppa and want to thank him and all the other Veterans for all that they have done for our country. Submitted By: Logan Swanson

At that time Camp Wolters was the largest infantry replacement-training center in the United States. Spent 13 months in Italy, too. Service Highlights: In November 1945, Edward was shipped out with the 349th Infantry and landed in Naples, Italy. He traveled through Italy for 13 months with the Army of Occupation before returning to the United States where he was granted an honorable discharge in February 1947 with the rank of staff sergeant.

Hometown: Newton Branch of Service: U.S. Navy Years of Service: From 1944 to 1946 in active service, and from 1946 to 1951 in Naval Reserve. After boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Station, Leonard was assigned to the USS Burias (AG-69) in early March 1944. The Burias received orders to join Service Squadron (ServRon) 10 stationed at Saipan in the Mariana Islands. The Burias worked in conjunction with USS Hector and USS Luzon making hull and electronic repairs to warships during the bloody Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns. Leonard was the noncommissioned officer in charge of decommissioning the ship in Bremerton, Wash. after the war. Service Highlights: Being in the Mariana Islands on August 6, 1945, on the day that the B29 Enola Gay left from Tinian to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, and three days later for the B29 Bockscar leaving to drop the bomb on Nagasaki, saving millions of American lives and ending the war against Japan. A Salute To Veterans
Thank you for reading the the inaugural edition of the Herald Times Reporter’s Veterans Day Salute to Veterans special section. As we pause today, Veterans Day, to remember and honor the service and sacrifice of our fallen, we do so with the knowledge that thousands of our fellow countrymen and women find themselves in harm’s way in the call to duty. Our thanks to the family members of veterans who took the time to submit photos and information about their loved ones. Finally, a profound thanks to the men and women who answered the call to serve our country.

Hometown: Kellnersville Branch of Service: U.S. Army Engineers Years of Service: April 1943 to December 1945 Where did Veteran Serve: Normandy, Northern France, Adrennes, Rhineland, Central Europe campaigns Service Highlights: World War II remembrance; he was a surveyor on bridges that were built in France, Belgium, Germany and Holland. He received the Legion of Merit medal for being responsible for engineering on four railroad bridges at Brachelen, Germany and Roermond, Holland. In the performance of this duty he demonstrated exceptional ingenuity and skill in handling all engineering problems accurately and promptly. Submitted By: Joyce Zeman

Hometown: Two Creeks; graduated 2008 from Mishicot High School Branch of Service: U.S. Marines Years of Service: 3 years Where did Veteran Serve: Based in Yuma, Ariz., but she is on her first deployment to Afghanistan and has been there since the spring of 2011. Service Highlights: Ashley works on aviation electronics on the Harrier jets. We are very proud of her. Her father, Ray Zifko, served in the U.S. Navy Seabees, and her grandfather, Raymond Rikkola, served as a communicator in World War II in the U.S. Army.

Hometown: Kellnersville Branch of Service: Air Force Years of Service: 1973 until 1977 Where did Veteran Serve: Lackland Air Force Base in Texas; Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi, Campion Air Force Base in Alaska and Baudette Air Force Station in Minnesota Service Highlights: Basic training at Lackland Air Force Base. Technical training at Keesler Air Force Base, trained as Aerospace Controls and Warning System Operator. Upon completion of training, transferred to the 743rd squadron at Campion Air Force Base. At Campion, tracked weekly flights of Soviet aircraft intruding on U.S. airspace and escorted those aircraft out of the airspace. While stationed at Campion, obtained the level of Expert. The 743rd squadron also was awarded the outstanding unit citation. After that, transferred to the 692nd squadron at Baudette. While at Baudette, was named Airman of the Month and Airman of the quarter. Was also part of the 23rd Air Division championship basketball team in 1976. Submitted By: Joyce Zeman
