Boys

Kiel

2010-11 record: 20-4, 12-2 EWC (second) Coach: Jamie Arenz, 10th year (102-100) Returning letter winners: Nic Hammann, 6-0 sr.; David Esswein, 5-10 sr.; Brad Jaeger, 6-1 sr.; Tyler Konz, 6-0 sr.; Jayson Kohlman, 6-1 sr. Other prospects: Cole Voelker, 5-10, jr.; Jordan Meyer, 6-2 jr.; Seth Woods, 6-4 jr.; Nathan Pieper, 5-9 jr.; Calvin Winkel, 6-0 jr.; Jacob Winkel, 6-4 so. Outlook: Fewer teams will have to replace as much talent as the Raiders, especially All-EWC standout Joey Burris. Esswein averaged 3 ppg and is the top returning scorer. But Kiel has size down low and a senior-laden perimeter that is high on athleticism, and could surprise those teams not ready for the Raiders.

New Holstein

2010-11 record: 8-13, 4-10 EWC (eighth) Coach: Ken Stephany, sixth year (52-74) Returning letter winners: Sam Cash, sr.; Ross Klapperich, sr.; Jared Schmitz, sr.; Bill Jones, sr.; Chris Greuel, sr. Other prospects: Joel Feider, sr.; Taylor Zimmermann, sr.; Austin Dewhurst, sr. Outlook: Cash averaged 16 ppg last season, the third-most among all returning area players.

Plymouth

2010-11 record: 14-10, 7-7 EWC (third) Coach: Jason Duff, second year (14-10) Returning letter winners: Parker Kastelic, 5-9 sr.; Brady Peterson, 6-3 sr.; Kollin Neils, 6-2 so.; Cory Unger, 5-10 jr.; Brett Erdmann, 6-0 sr.; Devin Gumm, 510 sr. Other prospects: Jordan Mueller, 6-4 jr.; Owen Henriksen, 6-2 jr.; Kevin Friederichs, 6-5 jr.; Matt Rhude, 5-10 jr.; Kyle Lisowe, 6-2 jr. Outlook: The Unger Panthers have to replace four starters, but there is talent in the backcourt, led by Kastelic (5.3 ppg, 2.1 ppg, 2.7 apg), Neils (6.4 ppg) and Unger (4.1 ppg). There’s also size coming up from last year’s JV team that went 19-3. If those players can develop quickly and hold their own in the paint, the guards can do the rest and the Panthers can

again be a top-three EWC squad.

Sheboygan Falls

2010-11 record: 15-11, 5-9 EWC (T-fourth) Coach: Eric Spielman, fifth year (56-40) Returning letter winners: Zach VanEngen, 6-0 sr.; Bobby Musil, 5-5 sr.; Aaron Krueger, 5-9 sr.; Cole Heili, 63 sr.; Ryan Krist, 6-0 sr.; Joe Lorenz, 6-6 sr.; Alex Wagner, 6-1 sr.; Jacob Tenpas, 6-2 jr. Other prospects: Jake Hucke, 5-10 jr.; VanEngen Connor Clark, 6-1 jr.; Riley Schueffner, 6-0 jr.; Sean McKinster, 5-10 jr.; Tyler Testroete, 6-4 jr.; Max Hilbert, 6-2 jr.; Ryan Halverson, 5-11 jr.; Matt Wilke, 511 so. Outlook: The Falcons return three of their top four scorers from a sectional final team in VanEngen (11 ppg, 3.5 rpg), Musil (8.9 ppg) and Krueger (7.1 ppg). Van Engen and Heili missed major time last year due to injuries, but the Falcons won 7 of 8 when they returned. While the depth is a relative unknown, the Falcons could make another run in the EWC and playoffs with better health plus senior leadership. Adam Thompson/ Sheboygan Press staff

2010-11 record: 12-12, 10-8 CLC (fifth) Coach: Jim Meinen, 16th year (148-181) Returning letter winners: Luke Kaat, 6-1 sr.; TJ Obbink, 510 sr.; Jon Herzog, 6-4 sr.; Kyle Kirst, 6-2 sr.; Josh Ruppel, 6-3 sr.; Kyle Green, 6-0 sr.; Bryce Knaub, 6-1 sr.; Grayson Pieffer, 6-2 jr. Other prospects: Conner Novack, 6-2 sr.; Spencer Bares, 6-1 so.; Adam Chier, 6-2 so.; RJ Lemmerman, 6-7 so.; Logan Peterson, 5-9 so.; Jarret Jentges, 63 jr.; Brent Broctrup, 6-0 jr. Outlook: The Rockets will miss the production of graduated guard Weston Meinen, but they do get back just about everyone else, including honorable mention All-CLC forward Herzog (11 ppg, 9 rpg). Around the perimeter, Ruppel (11 ppg, 5 rpg), Obbink (7 ppg, 3 rpg) and Kirst (7 ppg, 4 rpg) offer several options for coach Meinen. If CGB can consistently hold its own in the paint, it could be in the mix for another upper-half CLC finish.

Elkhart LakeGlenbeulah

2010-11 record: 8-17, 5-13 CLC (eighth) Coach: Jeremy Harrison, eighth year (34-121) Returning letter winners: Josh Schneider, 6-3 sr.; Taylor Kaboord, 5-10 jr.; Justin Schneider, 6-4 sr. Other prospects: Casey Dittmann, 6-1 sr.; Blake Loucks, 5-9 sr.; Tom Pritzl, 6-2 sr.; Ollie Sadiq, 5-11 jr. Outlook: The Resorters have decent size and experience, perhaps making them the sleeper of the CLC. Loucks, a mid-season transfer from Two Rivers last year, averaged 11.3 ppg during his stint, while the Schneiders combined for 14.6 ppg and Kaboord averaged 10 ppg.

Howards Grove

2010-11 record: 14-10, 12-6 CLC (fourth) Coach: Mark Christenson, second year at Howards (14-10, 438-251 overall) Returning letter winners: Ashton Holzman, 6-5 sr.; Mike Davis, 6-1 sr.; Davis Nennig, 6-4 jr.; Ryan Bruesewitz, 5-10 sr.; Thomas Brickner, 6-1 sr.; Noah Steines, 6-1 sr.; Jordan Hemb, 65 sr. 2010-11 record: 5-18, 3-15 CLC (ninth) Coach: Ken Roeder, fourth year (25-62) Returning letter winners: Alex Romanoski, 5-8 sr.; Ryan Zittel, 6-3 sr.; John Benishek, 6-3 sr.; Michael Krueger, 6-1 sr. Other prospects: Dominic Bocchini, 5-7 fr.; Garrett Griswold, 5-6 sr.; Connor Hogan, 6-2 jr.; Eric Mehoke, 5-9 sr.; Brett Mueller, 6-0 so.; James Misfeldt, 6-1 jr.; Greg Suralik, 6-5 jr.; Tyler Lewis, 6-3 jr.; Alex VanderSchaaf, 6-3 sr. Outlook: The Blue Bombers lost most of the close games they were in last year, but hope to turn it around with four returning starters and new players from a JV team that finished 16-6. Zittel (10 ppg, 10 rpg) could be the leader Kohler needs in those close games this time around.

Oostburg

2010-11 record: 26-1, 18-0 CLC (first) Coach: Kevin Bruggink, 22nd year, 14th at Oostburg (264-85) Returning letter winners: Alex Stecker, 5-8 sr.; Carter Ziemann, 6-1 sr.; Tyler Hartmann, 61 jr.; Brad Prinsen, 6-1 sr.; Josiah VerVelde, 6-9 jr.; Derrick Boldt, 62 sr. Other prospects: Kortu Josiah, 6-0 jr.; Aaron McKinster, 6-0 jr.; Parker Gabrielse, 6-2 so.; Patrick Mauer, 6-1 jr.; Ben Flipse, 63 jr.; Andrew Stecker Telschow, 6-2 so.; Jake Hurlbutt, 6-3 so. Outlook: The Flying Dutchmen have a lot to replace from last year’s state-bound squad, but Prinsen they do have returning firstteam All-CLC guard Stecker and second-team standout Prinsen. Oostburg will be athletic around the perimeter, and the play from the guards will lead the team in its quest for another conference title. VerVelde showed promise last season and provides inside height.

Random Lake

2010-11 record: 10-13, 8-10 CLC (sixth) Coach: Steve Murphy, fourth year (20-46 at Random Lake, 199-175 overall) Returning letter winners: Logan Armstrong, 6-4 sr.; Austin Fechter, 6-6 sr.; Justin Lunde, 6-1 sr.; Evan Rathke, Lunde 6-3 sr.; Cody Schuessler, 62 sr.; Andrew Wachs, 6-2 sr. Other prospects: Alex Rathke, 64 jr.; Pavel Semenov, 5-11 jr.; Dylan Sveom, 5-11 jr.; Andy Armstrong Fechter, 6-4 so.; Aaron Rathke, 6-1 fr. Outlook: Last year’s 10 wins were the most for a Random Lake squad since the 1999-2000 season (11). A strong senior class could lead the Rams to even more success than a year ago. Lunde (11.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg) and Evan Rathke (12.6 ppg, 7.3 rpg) were All-CLC players, and the Fechters, plus Armstrong (5.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg), provide Random

Lake with as much size as anyone in the conference.

Sheboygan Christian

2010-11 record: 9-15, 7-11 CLC (seventh) Coach: Brett Flipse, 15th year (207-132) Returning letter winners: Kyle Calvert, 511 sr.; Daevin DeMaster, 5-11 sr.; Josh Stecker, 5-9 so.; Sam Calvert Andringa, 5-8 sr.; Justin LeMahieu, 6-0 sr.; Jamie Otte, 60 sr.; Greg Scheidt, 5-11 sr.; Joshua Seider, 5-11 jr.; Tom Wilke, 6-0 sr. Other prospects: None listed. Outlook: Just one starter returns from last year’s nine-win squad in Calvert (8.5 ppg). The Eagles will need big contributions from new players to be a contender in the CLC. Size is also a concern, with nobody listed as taller than 6-feet on the roster.

Sheboygan Lutheran

2010-11 record: 18-7, 13-5 CLC (third) Coach: Todd Dekker, 17th year (210-153) Returning letter winners: Sam Dekker, 68 sr.; Nick Redeker, 6-4 sr.; Josh Wheeler, 6-3 sr.; Cody Fintelman, 6-1 sr. Other prospects: Matt Gumm, 5-10 Redeker sr.; Ben Leibham, 6-4 jr.; Tyler Zastrow, 510 so.; Phil Leibham, 6-2 so.; Jeff Hess, 5-11 so., Jake Jurss, 5-11 fr. Outlook: Lutheran has just two returnWheeler ing starters. Fortunately, one of them is Dekker (28.8 ppg, 10.5 rpg), the state’s top-ranked player. Including Dekker, the Crusaders will have some nice size down low, and open spots will be filled from last year’s JV team that went 17-4. This is the season for the Crusaders to make some noise, not just in the CLC, but in the WIAA Division 5 playoffs. But it will take some production from a strong sophomore class to make it happen. Hartnett Outlook: The Warriors have as much production back as anyone, led by second-team AllCLC returnee Kroening (12.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.3 bpg) and two tall post players in second-teamer Hartnett (12.1 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 2 bpg) and Street (7.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 2.7 spg, 2 bpg). There is decent depth to help fill some voids, making this season a very promising one in Fredonia.

Girls Cedar GroveBelgium

2010-11 record: 17-7, 13-5 CLC (third) Coach: Josh Ketterhagen, 13th year (143-119) Returning letter winners: Alyssa Sauer, 5-5 jr.; Alyssa Schmitt, 5-6 jr.; Ashley Weavers, 5-8 jr.; Danielle DeHaai, 5-7 sr.; Michelle Brisbin, 5-8 sr. Other prospects: Alex Buechler, 5-6 jr.; Ashli von Heimburg, 56 fr.; Brooke Koepsell, 5-4 jr.; Steph Dahlke, 5-8 jr.; Briana Weyker, 5-4 jr. Outlook: Expect the same intensity on the defensive end that the Rockets have been known for under Ketterhagen. This season, however, CGB must contend with relative inexperience and a lack of size down low. But the Rockets will be quick, led by Sauer (6.2 ppg, 2.2 rpg) and Schmitt (3.5 ppg, 2.6 rpg).

Elkhart LakeGlenbeulah

2010-11 record: 17-9, 12-6 CLC (fourth) Coach: Don Kulow, 19th year (226-191) Returning letter winners: Maddie Landgraf, 5-5 sr.; Rachel Knowles, 5-7 sr.; Morgan Voigtlander, 5-2 sr.; Rachael Lallensack, 5-6 sr. Other prospects: Emily Grunewald, 5-2 jr.; Mikayla Scholten, 5-9 jr.; Charity Rodriguez, 5-4 jr.; Emma Gross, 5-9 jr.; Ashley Pfeifer, 5-3 so.; Kelly Theel, 5-3 so.; Izzy Sadiq, 5-7 so.; Aryanna Klemme, 5-4 so. Outlook: Elkhart will again run up and down in an effort to utilize its superior speed and offset the lack of size (nobody taller than 5foot-9). Landgraf (10 ppg, 3 spg, 2 apg) is a returning first-team All-CLC standout, while Knowles (5.1 ppg, 3 rpg) and Voigtlander (4.3 ppg) help provide a solid foundation to work with. If the Resorters can hold their own in the paint defensively, they could compete for another upper-half CLC finish.

Plymouth’s Kaitlyn Hoffmann shoots over New Holstein’s Amelia Mirsberger in a game last season. Both seniors were first-team AllEastern Wisconsin Conference players in 2010-11. PRESS FILE PHOTO

2010-11 record: 19-6, 15-3 CLC (second) Coach: Heidi Georgeff, fifth year (75-19) Returning letter winners: Tatum Brickner, 5-9 sr.; Alexia DeRuyter, 5-8 sr.; Karlie Fermanich, 5-6 sr.; Karyssa Gallenberger, 5-7 sr.; Alexis Lindstrom, 5- Lindstrom 7 sr.; Brianna Morgan, 5-10 sr.; Amber Reinemann, 5-6 jr.;

Hayley Rickmeier, 6-0 jr.; Jazmin Stauss, 5-8 sr. Other prospects: Payton Bramstedt, 5-5 jr.; Jessica Larson, 5-4 jr.; Cassie Marver, 5-5 jr.; Brittany Wehrmann, 5-10 jr. Outlook: Lindstrom, a Northern Illinois recruit, is back. The first-team All-CLC, Division 4 AllState and reigning Sheboygan Press All-Area Player of the Year averaged 17.6 ppg last season and will be surrounded by loads of talent for her senior year. That includes Gallenberger, a secondteam All-CLC player, and Morgan, an honorable mention performer. Rickmeier provides talented size down low, and last year’s 19-2 JV squad will provide some of the best depth in the area.

Kohler

2010-11 record: 7-16, 5-13 CLC (eighth) Coach: Terry Jensen, fourth year (18-50) Returning letter winners: Christina Lindstrom, 5-7 sr.; Rachel Maggi, 5-9 jr.; Mari-Kathleen Marzano, 5-9 jr.; Molly Misfeldt, 5-6 jr.; Alexis Rodriguez, 5-6 jr.; Kendall Wolf, 5-8 sr. Other prospects: None listed. Outlook: The Blue Bombers will be short in the paint, but they do return several key players from a year ago in an attempt to continue improvement under fourth-year coach Jensen. While the overall record was similar, the defense improved dramatically, resulting in closer games as the program continued its upswing.

Oostburg

2010-11 record: 23-4, 18-0 CLC (first) Coach: Lisa Immel, fourth year (69-13) Returning letter winners: Allie Paluchniak, 5-10 sr.; Lexie Greenheck, 5-10 sr.; Maddy Kaat, 6-0 sr.; Emily Hengst, 5-8 sr.; Maggie TenHaken, 5-6 sr.; Abby VanStelle, 6-1 jr.; Maranda Huibregtse, 5-8 so.; Maria Huibregtse, 5-8 so. 2010-11 record: 12-12, 9-9 CLC (sixth) Coach: Jeff Jurss, third year (17-28) Returning letter winners: Lauren Van Seters, 5-10 sr.; Vanessa Gudex, 5-8 sr.; Jordyn Scheele Jurss, 5-8 sr.; Nicole Beine, 55 sr.; Calli Ames, 5-10 sr.; Ashley Scheele, 5-8 jr.; Haley Clark, 5-6 jr. Other prospects: Erin Quam, 5-8 so.; Danielle Byrum, 5-6 so. Outlook: Lutheran will have one of the more experienced teams in the CLC, with seven returning players. That includes AllCLC forward Scheele, and Gudex, an honorable mention selection. The Crusaders also possess decent size, but aren’t overly deep. They’ll rely on quickness and athleticism in a quest for another top-half conference finish.

2010-11 record: 11-13, 10-8 CLC (fifth) Coach: Ryan Faris, ninth year (76-99) Returning letter winners: Kristie Ernst, 5-8 sr.; Katie Ernst, 5-8 sr.; Amber Hubing, 5-7 sr.; Becca Heup, 5-9 sr.; Melissa Drescher, 5-11 sr.; Mackenzie Witte, 5-5 sr.; Nicole Paulus, 5-7 jr.; Delaney Sinnen, 5-8 so.

2010-11 record: 2-20, 1-17 CLC (T-ninth) Coach: Sadie Mentink, first year Returning letter winners: Alexis Coulis, 5-4 sr.; Danielle Dahlke, 5-5 sr.; Cherith Touw, 511 jr.; Catlin Vervelde, 5-5 sr.; Halie Wisse, 5-7 sr. Other prospects: Alexandria Abel, 5-10 jr.; Katie Flipse, 5-6 jr.; Vanessa Lorier, 5-4 jr.; Deanna Rutkauskas, 5-8 jr. Outlook: The Eagles look to improve upon last year’s two-win season, and five returning players should help in that quest for first-year coach Mentink. A large freshman class has the future looking brighter.

2010-11 record: 7-16, 6-12 CLC (seventh) Coach: Lee LeMahieu, 30th year (441-184) Returning letter winners: Katie Bares, 5-3 jr.; Mickey Burris, 5-4 jr.; Emily Thome, 5-7 jr.; Lizzie Janke, 5-5 so.; Bailey Johnson, 55 so. Other prospects: Kayla Borowski, 5-4 jr.; Erika Karrels, 58 jr.; Katie Lippe, 5-5 jr.; Kylie Watry, 5-3 jr.; Kaylee Klapp, 5-5 so.; Becca Paulus, 5-8 so.; Jessika Dieringer, 5-5 fr. Outlook: The rebuilding process continues for Ozaukee, which has no seniors on the team this season. Thome (4 ppg), Bares (3 ppg) and Burris (3 ppg) will have to increase their offensive load, while a promising sophomore class provides depth.

Stemper, 5-8 jr.; Jo-Leigh VerVelde, 5-10 so. Outlook: The Flying Dutchmen have the size, talent, leadership and experience to make a run at a fifthconsecutive appearance at State. Palunichak was first-team AllPaluchniak CLC, while Maranda Huibregtse was second-team at point guard and Kaat was honorable mention. Again, Oostburg is a favorite to repeat as CLC champion, and the depth up and down the bench adds to the potential of a special season.

Other prospects: Mariah Schaver, 5-6 sr.; Jessica Hartwig, 5-9 jr.; Becah Hiller, 6-6 jr.; Jessica Mueller, 5-5 so.; Megan Schimberg, 5-3 jr. Outlook: With loads of experience back from last year’s 10-8 CLC squad, the Rams should again be in the thick of the upper-half CLC race. Paulus (7.5 ppg, 3.1 rpg) was an honorable mention AllPaulus CLC player, and Kristie (6.7 ppg, 4 rpg) and Katie (6.0 ppg, 5.7 rpg) Ernst can get it done on the blocks. Size may be a concern, but Random may have the firepower and balance to make some noise.

Eastern Wisconsin Conference Girls Kiel

2010-11 record: 10-13, 5-9 EWC (fifth) Coach: Jeremy Bushman, second year (10-13) Returning letter winners: Maxine Becker, 5-6 sr.; Mikayla Preissner, 5-7 sr.; Abby Gilsdorf, 5-7 sr.; Alexis Genke, 5-10 sr.; Erin Schuler, 6-0 Preissner sr.; Ashley Meisner, 5-9 sr.; Corrina Beaumont, 5-9 jr.; Brittany Meyer, 511 sr.; Sami Krupp, 5-9 sr. Other prospects: None listed. Outlook: The Raiders return most of their varsity players from a year ago, so expectations have risen. Preissner is a returning All-EWC second-teamer, and Genke was honorable mention.

New Holstein

2010-11 record: 13-8, 9-5 EWC (fourth) Coach: Nate DePagter and Tom Hau, second year (13-8) Returning letter winners: Lauren Voelker, 5-4 sr.; Amanda Rose, 5-7 sr.; Naomi Stevenson, 5-9 sr.; Tara Zipperer, 5-9 jr.; Tristen Guelig, 5-9 jr.; Allieson Mirsberger, 5-5 jr.; Danielle Brenner, 5-6 so.; Karli Fannin, 5-6 so. Other prospects: Tana Braun, 5-6 jr.; Sarah Winkler, 5-9 jr.; Laiken Meyer, 5-6 so. Outlook: With eight returning players, the Huskies should have as much experience as anyone in the EWC. But height is a concern, with nobody taller than 5foot-9. Still, New Holstein hopes its depth can wear down opponents and keep the Huskies in the top-half of the conference.

mouth can find a true point guard to coordinate the offense, Plymouth could join Waupun and Two Rivers in the race for the EWC crown.

Sheboygan Falls

2010-11 record: 13-10, 11-3 EWC (second) Coach: LeRoy Hamilton, eighth year (100-79) Returning letter winners: Kelly Jens, 5-7 sr.; Steph Kleckner, 5-9 sr.; Erica Duda, 5-8 jr.; Nicole Fenner, 5-8 jr.; Hasler Staci Hasler, 5-10 jr. Other prospects: Olivia Warpinski, 6-1 sr.; Katie Kautzer, 5-9 so.; Karlie Beeck, 5-8 so.; Maggie Manning, 5-7 jr.; Anna Mathieu, 5-7 jr.; Allison Latsch, 5-5 jr. Outlook: The Falcons have decent size and a nice go-to returnee in Hasler, a second-team All-EWC forward last year. Falls has won 11 or more game in the conference four years running, and is poised to keep up the impressive trend. Adam Thompson/ Sheboygan Press staff

Plymouth

2010-11 record: 19-6, 13-1 EWC (first) Coach: Brad Shutter, sixth year (60-53) Returning letter winners: Rachael Cecka, 6-0 jr.; Joann Wolfenburg, 6-2 sr.; Lizzy Stanczyk, 5-5 sr.; Marissa Grapentine, 5-7 jr.; Rachel Holzhaeuser, 5-9 jr.; Sara Thompson 5-7 jr. Other prospects: Sophia Kiela, 5-5 jr.; Joa Cain, 5-9 jr.; Nikki Reil, 6-0 so.; Kailey Moegenburg, 6-0 so. Outlook: Few teams will be able to match up with the size of the defending EWC champion Panthers, who have four girls at six feet or taller, including the team’s lone returning starter in Cecka. While experience may be an issue at first, talent brought up from a 20-2 JV team should adjust earlier than most. If Ply-

prep basketball player. But now, Sheboygan Lutheran senior Sam Dekker has bridged that gap in time. Dekker, a University of Wisconsin commit, begins his senior season ranked as the nation’s 18th-best player by Rivals.com. ESPN.com ranks him 26th in the U.S. Wolf played in the prestigious McDonald’s All-American Game, something Dekker is considered a strong candidate to also do. NBA rules prohibit the league’s coaches from commenting on any current high school or college player, but Dekker’s voice rose with excitement when talking about what he has read and heard about Wolf over the years. “He was very dominant, and he would just fill up gyms and every college program wanted him,” says Dekker, 17. “He could have gone anywhere. He was a beast, and nobody could stop him.” While there are similarities between Wolf back then and Dekker now, there are obvious differences. Wolf, 6-10 and 215 during his senior year, was a dominant post player who could extend his game and hit feathery mid-range jumpers. Dekker, now 6-8 and 210 pounds, is a guard who can do damage inside. Wolf finished his career with 2,084 points, a mark fellow four-year starter Dekker (who has 1,697), will likely breeze past. However, Wolf’s teams were generally better, and he often sat long stretches of the second half after the Bombers had build large leads. When Wolf, now 46, played at Kohler, all eyes were on him. It’s the same for Dekker now, and he knows it. Wolf says he was never bothered by any socalled pressure, and Dekker seems to share that trait. “I never felt any pressure while I was going through that time,” Wolf says now. “As I look back, there were signs of pressure on me, but thanks to my parents and siblings, it never got to me.” “I try not to notice it,” Dekker says of the scruti-

Dunking comes quite easily for the 6-8 Sam Dekker, who packed on 15 pounds of muscle during the offseason and now weighs 210. In Lutheran’s season opener on Tuesday night, Dekker scored 45 points in a road victory over Green Bay NEW Lutheran. PRESS FILE PHOTO

ny and fan interest. “But every human being is going to know when people are watching you. I realize that. I have tried to grow up fast, have tried hard not to act a fool around people because everyone is going to critique what I’m doing. It comes with the territory, and you have to decide, how do you want people to see you in the spotlight? What do you want the perception of you to be?” Wolf’s reign over Wisconsin prep basketball was so dominant, he was chosen as the state’s all-time high school player in a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel feature in 2005. Yet by all accounts, he remained humble throughout his ascent through the basketball ranks. “I had a very strong base at home growing up,” he says. “If I acted up it was pretty simple; my mom said, ‘Wait until your dad gets home.’ My dad was a big man. And my brothers and sisters … I was one of seven kids. If I ever got a little cocky, they came along and put me in my place.” Jeff’s support system growing up included his late father, Leo, his mom, Pat, older brothers Jim, Jeff and John and older sisters Judy, Laurie and Mary Margaret. “Our parents made us all feel special,” Joe says. “I wasn’t allowed to be too big for my britches.” Dekker’s support system is strong too. His dad, Todd, is also his head coach, and his brother, John, preceded him at Lutheran and scored 1,919 points from 2003-06 before a solid college career at

NCAA Division III Lawrence University. Sam’s mother, Carol, and older sister, Hannah, were all smiles during Sam’s signing ceremony on national letter of intent day earlier this month. “I think he’s handling everything very well,” says Todd. “It’s still fun for Sam, and I think that’s the most important thing. He’s really having fun with the game and as a father, that’s the most pleasing thing to see.” Wolf parlayed his talents into a long NBA career, and a lifelong connection to the game. Sam Dekker says playing in the NBA has always been his dream. “But whatever happens, happens,” he says. “One phase at a time. Right now, what’s most important is my high school career, and hopefully after that, I’ll have a successful career at Wisconsin. If something presents itself after that, great. But I am totally trusting in God’s plan and what He has in store for me.” Whatever his future holds, Dekker is wise enough to know these are special times, times he hopes to look back on fondly years from now, just like Wolf still does 28 years after his final year of high school. “This is a year I want to cherish,” Dekker says. “I want to make the most out of this that I possibly can, at school, with my friends and on court. Years from now, I don’t want to have any regrets.” Reach Pete Barth at pbarth@sheboyganpress.com
