Fish Tank Bar & Grill WESTON — When Darrell Bradfish opened the Fish Tank in Weston in 2008, he didn’t serve a lot of seafood. Now, 19 months later, the Fish Tank won the prestigious honor of having the best fish fry in the Everest area. “We’ll take it. I didn’t even know we were in the running, but we have been getting a lot of compliments on our food,” Bradfish said. Initially, Bradfish served the fish with an original recipe batter, but about six months ago he also started offering a beer batter. Rothschild resident Joanne Benzinger and her husband of 50 years, Larry, both 72, like that the
restaurant offers different batters because they order one of each. “The fish is very good,” Joanne Benzinger said. “There’s not a lot of batter that you have to peel off.” She also likes the nonsmoking dining and the atmosphere.“It’s very roomy in here. Even when they have a lot of people, you don’t feel crowded.” “I’ve heard of people driving past because the parking lot looks full, but I want them to know we always have room,” Bradfish said. “We seat 160 people.” The Benzingers try different places to go out for fish on Fridays, and said they agree with the
survey results. “If you want a good fish fry, come out to the Fish Tank. It was a five-star meal,” Larry Benzinger said. Bradfish said he appreciates that his customers have recognized that he hired new kitchen staff and now provides consistency in addition to quality food. “Winning the best fish fry in the area is like gold to me,” he said. BEST STEAK WESTON — Joel Kasten, chef and co-owner of WISH Steakhouse, knows good meat comes from happy cows. He buys the best quality meat he can get, which is probably one of the reasons WISH was voted the best place to get a steak. “We just started using Allen Brothers out of Chicago, which is just a great product,” Kasten said.
Kasten usually features seven or eight types of steak on his menu, including several bone-in varieties, which he said is becoming more popular with customers. “People are really asking for bone-in steaks. Meat with the bone in has more flavor,” he said. But the real secret to Kasten’s steaks is butter. Lots of butter. “We dip the meat in butter when it comes out

WESTON — Kelly Anne Barttelt of Weston doesn’t mind grabbing wings or a burger on a date with her husband. But when she wants to have a special night with him, she heads to WISH Steakhouse in Weston, voted the best place for a romantic date. “It’s the right combination of atmosphere and really good food,” she said.
“It’s the perfect package for a date.” Owners Dan Maas and Joel Kasten designed the restaurant with intimacy in mind, installing high booths, soft lighting and painting the walls in warm colors. “Our goal when we remodeled this building was to be comfortable and cozy. Some places you go

Log Cabin Restaurant SCHOFIELD — You don’t have to be an early bird to enjoy the best breakfast in town. It’s served any time of the day at the Log Cabin Restaurant. Purchased by Keith and Marlene Kappel in 2004, the Log Cabin once again has been selected as the best place for breakfast by Everest Herald readers. “This recognition goes above and beyond the fact that our main goal is good food and good service,” Kappel said. “I am friends with the majority of my customers.” That relationship must resonate with his customers as the counter is always full of groups of friends that meet every day to eat breakfast and “shoot the bull.” “We have one round about 7 a.m., and another at 9 a.m. One group calls themselves the ‘board of directors,’ who discuss everything from family to world politics,” Kappel said. Kappel said being awarded best breakfast in the Everest area also is about the relationships he and his staff members
build with customers. Curt Zich of Weston has known Keith Kappel for about 15 years, and Zich still heads to the counter at the Log Cabin every day for breakfast. Zich said he likes that the Log Cabin is locally owned and that the Kappels serve “good old American food.” “It’s good food at a good price, but it’s also more of a social event,” said Zich, a self-employed electrician. “(My friends and I) like to think we’re solving the world’s political problems” when dining at Log Cabin. Kappel said he appreciates his patrons and friends for taking the time to vote. “There’s no strangers at the Log Cabin — just friends we haven’t met yet,” Kappel said. Cuppa Joe’s owner Sue Syring said her coffee is so good because she pays close attention to where she gets it. WESTON — Most people wouldn’t think to venture down an industry-lined street for a good lunch, but readers of the Everest Herald know better. Tom and Diana Rasmussen opened Razz’s Breakfast Bar & Grill in the middle of a Weston industrial park three years ago, and this year the restaurant was voted the best place for lunch in the Best in Everest survey. Employees of Baer’s Beverage go to Razz’s for lunch about three times a week, and hamburgers are one of the eatery’s most popular lunch selections. “It’s good food and close to work.They have very good burgers,” said Chris Baer, 24, an employee at Baer’s Beverage. “It’s the taste of the burger, the good buns and they put a lot of vegetables and extras on them. It’s just an allaround good burger,” Baer
said.“There is no chain food for us.” On Fridays, Baer also likes to order the crab chowder soup. Razz’s manager Tiffani King said it is the most popular soup on the menu.The head chef, Stu Meyer, makes all the soups from scratch. “(Meyer) has some real unique ones, like pizza soup, BLT soup and always has a special soup of the day,” King said. The Rasmussens said they appreciate being recognized for their food, and said it is a dream come true for them to open the bar and grill and for it to be so successful. WESTON — The competition has been fierce the last three years for the best hamburger in the Everest area, and this year was no different.After only three years in the area, Razz’s Breakfast Bar & Grill has taken top honors for the best hamburger in the Best in Everest survey. The customers at Razz’s don’t seem surprised by the news. “These are the best burgers in town — actually, I think in the county,” said 54-year-old Todd Tetting of Weston. He and Joe Powers, 45, also of Weston, are repeat lunch customers at Razz’s. And it’s the food that keeps bringing them back. Powers said when deciding where to go, he and Tetting agreed on Razz’s because the burgers were so good the first time the duo had them.When the two were at Razz’s in early March, both ordered the BLT burger. “I may need a vice grip to fit this in my mouth,” Powers said of the burger. All of the hamburgers at Razz’s are made from a half pound of fresh beef straight from Townline Market. Chef Stu Meyer is the burger master at Razz’s. The Razz Burger is the most popular burger on the menu. It features a toasted butter bun, mayonnaise, Swiss and American cheeses, fried onions and mushrooms, said manager Tiffani King. King said everyone at Razz’s appreciates that their loyal customers went out and voted for them as the best place in the area to get a hamburger. “We take great pride in our food, and always have,” she said. Tie: Khamchanh’s Chinese Food and Chang Garden ROTHSCHILD — Readers in the Everest area must believe in tradition.There was a tie for best place for Asian food between “something old” and “something new,” with Khamchanh’s Chinese Food in Rothschild and Chang Garden in Weston taking the honors. ◆ Khamchanh Sirivong opened her restaurant in Rothschild in 1984 and, after 25 years, has survived Asian buffets and restaurants coming and going, road construction and the downturn in the economy. Sirivong and her husband, Kam, of 38 years have owned, operated and cooked for the restaurant for the duration, and still average about 250 carryouts a week. “We don’t have the overhead.We have never hired a chef. Kam has always done all the cooking, and I do the prep work. It’s down-home cooking made fresh when
you order it,” Sirivong said. WESTON — Sam’s Pizza has been in the area for 52 years, and for 48 years John Huber has been making pizzas there. Huber now owns Sam’s Pizza in Wausau and Weston and, according to Everest Herald readers, he makes the best pies around — for three years running. “It’s just good — the crust, the cheese, the meat, everything,” said Scott Fust, 38, of Mosinee. WESTON — When it comes to getting fit, it can be hard to find everything you want in one place. The Aspirus Branch of the Woodson YMCA in Weston comes pretty close, which is probably why Everest Herald readers voted it the best place to work out. “It’s a nice, big place,” said Ryan Hubacek, 25, of Rothschild. “They always have new equipment, which is good to try.” “It’s nice to have a variety of machines,” said Paul Luce, 19, of Rothschild. Families like the variety of options for adults and kids. In addition to a full cardio and weight studio, the Y has a pool, whirlpool, indoor track, gyms, racquetball, exercise classes and child care. Gwen Lamont of Rothschild works out whenever she can and often takes her two children, Payton, 5, and T.J., 7, along to play in the game room or the gym. “I can work out, and the kids can come and play with other kids. They like just hanging out and playing games,” she said. “ It’s as much fun for them as it is for me, plus they get social activity.” Lamont also likes that she can do things with her children. “In the winter we like to go swimming or just (play) in the gym, shooting baskets,” she said. It’s these activities that help keep Lamont and her kids happy. “We love exercise. It’s fun, happy endor-

SCHOFIELD — Krueger Floral-N-Gifts in Schofield has dominated the florist category in the Best in Everest survey all three years, and manager Beth Eiden thinks she knows why. “We pride ourselves on having the freshest flowers in the area. Because of our wholesale division (in Kronenwetter), we are able to cut out the middle man,” Eiden said. She also attributes the wins to her eight fulltime and three part-time designers. “We have a diverse staff of designers. They all have different styles and techniques, and a lot of experience,” she said. Eiden adds that Krueger has a wonderful location and carries a variety of items in its store. “Everyone knows we’re here. Also, we have fresh, exciting home decor, candles and gifts besides the florals,” she said. Virg Lemmer, 56, of Mosinee had Krueger duplicate her mother’s wedding flowers for her own wedding and has been a loyal customer and mouthpiece ever since. She even has a hidden container she calls her “flower garden fund” that she puts extra money in just to go to Krueger. “I go in there for everything. Fresh flowers, garden plants, Christmas decor. WESTON — It’s no secret that Goodwill offers some good deals on everything from clothing to toys. But it doesn’t just sell used items. The store also carries new items, such as cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items. “We carry a lot of cleaning items, things that we don’t get donated,” said Bob Karls, assistant team leader for the Weston store at 2711 Schofield Ave. “That way, we have everything you might need at a good price.” Alissa Lodholz, 25, of Schofield, likes the variety of merchandise at the store. “It’s cheaper than you can find at most stores, and not everything is used,” she said. The best part? The revenue from the store goes back into the community. Goodwill works with local organizations, such as D.C. Everest Senior High School and North Central Health Care, to train workers and offer job experience.
“A lot of the people we work with, they’ve never worked before. Here, they can get work experience and get a comfort level in the workforce so they can go out in the community and get a job,” Karls said. Sales associate Jill Preston has worked at Goodwill for seven years. “I just love the people I work with, and it’s a great environment,” she said. The Goodwill store in Weston also donates items it cannot use to other local organizations, such as the Humane Society of Marathon County and food pantries. “If someone has a need, let us know. The Office Bar SCHOFIELD — So, you think you can sing? Then head down to the karaoke stage at the Office Bar in Schofield and battle for a piece of the $5,000 purse dolled out during the yearlong contest. That’s where readers of the Everest Herald voted as the best place to go for karaoke. The bar pulls in about 50 singers every Wednesday night. People from 21 to 85 years old get up and sing anything from rap to country and even some heavy metal, said manager Carrie Romanowski. Michelle Ganski, 25, of Wittenberg is a fan of karaoke night. She said she always has liked to sing and said the bar is so small, that everybody is accepted. “You could be the worst or the best singer, and everybody gets along,” she said. Ganski also said she loves the atmosphere and
thinks Brian West is the best. West is the star of the Wednesday evening shows and has been running the karaoke nights and contests for three years now, Romanowski said. Each week, the winner of the contest draws an envelope containing a cash prize from $25 to $100. Then the weekly winners come back for the monthly finals. The monthly winner receives $300, and each of the monthly winners return for the year-end grand karaoke finale. “It is a huge finale. People from Minnesota, Illinois and Michigan come for it,” Romanowski said. “And we fit them all in.” The weekly karaoke contest starts at 9 p.m. every Wednesday. WESTON — It has been less than a year since Bob and Ronda Gajewski took over ownership of RJ’s Bullshooters Saloon in Weston, and they already have grabbed the attention of live music fans in the area. RJ’s Bullshooters was voted the best place to go for live music in the Best in Everest survey this year. “It’s just a clean, fun place,” Bob Gajewski said. “I also think it’s the service they get here, our employees, reasonably priced drinks and, of course, the bull.” RJ’s Bullshooters Saloon has played host to many national acts, including Craig Morgan, Billy Currington, Tracy Lawrence and Randy Houser. “We get between 400 and 900 people coming in for these shows,” Gajewski said. In addition to the big acts, Bullshooters has live music every Friday and Saturday night, and Gajewski is proud of the names he pulls in from the local and regional arena. “We’ve had Jerry Schmitt and the Whitehouse Players, The Mason Dixons out of Minneapolis, Minn., and Rick Monroe and John Karl from Nashville, Tenn., just to name a few,” Gajewski said. Marcus Cedar Creek Cinema ROTHSCHILD — It seems teenagers agree that the price of a movie ticket is not too much to ask for a chance to get away from their parents because they voted Marcus Cedar Creek Cinema the best teen hangout. “And as parents, where else can you send your child away for $10?” said Carlo Petrick, communications manager for Marcus Theaters. On a serious note, Petrick said that, traditionally, theaters have attracted a lot of teens — a key audience that goes to movies. “It’s an affordable way for people to find entertainment. Movie-going is an experience they can enjoy at a good price,” Petrick said. The year 2009 was a record year for attendance in theaters, he said. Cedar Creek Cinema has 10 theaters and, in December, it added it’s first digital theater to show 3-D movies. Petrick said it’s a big deal for the area since the next closest digital theater is about 90 minutes away.
