ANITOWOC — There’s an activity for every age at the Manitowoc County Fair. Kids look forward to the event for rides, food, games and seeing their friends. Seniors are offered discounted admission. And, the three entertainment pavilions — rock, polka and variety — keep everyone dancing until closing time. “We have the best fair value for only $10 including carnival rides, grandstand events and parking,” said Jenell Krizek of the Manitowoc County Expo and Ice Center. “People will travel from other counties for this fair because it’s such a good deal.” If you want to get in on a great deal, join the 5K run/walk Running A-Fair 2011, which benefits Manitowoc County Miracles Special Olympics. It takes place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23. Participants will receive an official Running A-Fair shirt and free admittance to the Manitowoc County Fair. Registration is $15 in advance and $18 for same-day registration. Those collecting donations of $100 or more will receive a sweatshirt. This year’s fair is Aug. 23-
28. Gates are open 4 to 11 p.m. Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $10 per person and includes grandstand events and parking. Other admission options are $5 for seniors, age 60 and older; $1 ages 1 to 5; and $25 for a season pass, but these options do not include grandstand events or carnival rides. Grandstand admission is $5. For seniors who plan to return to the fair on the same day, the best bet is to purchase the $10 ticket for the day right away. Attendees cannot add $5 to a previously purchased $5 senior admission. Senior day is every day with $5 admission, but Thursday’s events are a big draw, including the barefoot horse pullers at 1:30 p.m., polka music all day, cream puff eating contest, bingo and a dance competition in the ice center. “The Dance Competition drew an audience of 800 to 1,000 people last year,” said Jerome Vetting, chairman of the County Expo and Ice Center Board. “We have five or six teams from area high schools. Thankfully, they are

Teams pay $25 to enter and receive $50 back when they perform, giving them a good start on their performance season and a little money in their treasury.” Starting out the week on Tuesday will be the Fair Kickoff Race with Dirt Late Models along with the IMCA stock cars. “The race will pull in some of the best drivers in the state and from the
national touring series World of Outlaws Late Models and Lucas Oil Series,” said Dan Newberg, entertainment and vendors chairman. Jimmy Mars recently won the Firecracker 400 in Lernerville, Penn., with a purse of $30,000 and will be on the track, along with Brian Berkhofer of Muscatina, Iowa, and 2010 Fastrak National Champ A.J. Diemel. Racing starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday. A couple of new vendors will be on hand to tempt your taste buds as well. Look for spiral fries from Freedom Food Gourmet.

ted to the fair. You can learn a lot about the craft by watching the judging of exhibitions. Judging days and times are all posted on pages 12-13. A few time changes are in effect this year with the hog showing at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and the sheep at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Don’t miss the Manitowoc Culver’s Futurity at 7 p.m. Saturday. Those interested in pets should check out the Junior Dog Obedience Judging at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in the ice center. Open Class begins at 7:30 p.m.
