You’re engaged! Now what? The top five wedding planning questions to answer first ARA Content

oliday season is engagement season. But after he pops the question and she says “yes,” the reality of wedding planning sets in - and that feeling of joyful romance can fade as quickly as Christmas lights on an overloaded circuit. Here are the top five questions you will need to answer to make your wedding planning journey a pleasant experience. “After Valentine’s Day, the holidays are the most popular time of year for couples to become engaged,” says wedding planning expert Raymond Miller of My Wedding Reception Ideas.com, a leading online resource for brides seeking unique wedding favors, decorations, and gifts. “Many brides-to-be who get engaged over the holidays will begin their planning efforts in the first months of the new year. Knowing where to start can be overwhelming.” Brides should begin their planning by answering five basic questions, Miller advises.

1. What is our budget? “Funding your wedding can be one of the most expensive undertakings you’ll tackle in your life together as a couple,” Miller says. “Many couples only spend more on buying a house or car, or funding their children’s college educations.” Setting - and sticking to - a budget for your wedding is an essential step toward starting your married life on a sound financial footing. Determine where your funding will come from - if your parents can help or if you’ll be paying on your own - and decide how much you can afford to spend without going into debt.

2. What season works? Virtually as soon as you announce you’re engaged, people start asking what the wedding date will be. To make answering that question as simple as possible, start by considering in what season you would like to be married. Would you prefer a spring ceremony? Or do you dream of a holiday wedding? By narrowing down the season, and selecting it well in advance, you’ll be able to secure a date that will work for everyone.

3. Where do we want to get married and have our reception? Will you have a destination wedding? Or do you want to keep it local? While wedding planning is usually most successful when done well in advance, if you’re interested in a destination wedding, planning far ahead is essential. Popular destinations book quickly in prime wedding seasons and you may find venues in the destination of your choice are booked a year or more in advance.

“...these five points are the basics you must address and everything else about your wedding will be planned around your answers to these questions...”

4. What kind of venue do you want? Do you dream of a big church wedding? Or saying your “I do’s” in a beautiful natural setting? Perhaps you want your reception to be in a grand hotel. Knowing the type of venue you desire will help you refine your options and choose a specific location down the road.

5. Who do you want to officiate? Is it important to you to be married by your own church’s minister? Or are you OK with a justice of the peace? Do you fantasize about being joined in marriage by a ship’s captain? Or does your mother have her heart set on seeing you married by the rabbi who was there at your bat mitzvah? Just as popular venues book quickly, favorite officiants also have their dance cards fill fast for popular wedding seasons. As soon as you know who you would like to officiate at your wedding, it might pay to approach him or her and find out about future availability. “Of course there are many, many things to consider when planning a wedding,” Miller says. “But these five points are the basics you must address and everything else about your wedding will be planned around your answers to these questions. Once you’ve made these initial decisions, it will be easier to refine your options and decide exactly what will make your wedding wonderful, memorable and perfect for you.” For more wedding planning and wedding reception ideas visit www. When selecting a plastic surgeon, individuals should check if the physician is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. A new year, a new you - this might mean to you a trip to a plastic surgeon. There are new procedures and products that are non-invasive and minor to major changes can be acquired in just a lunch hour visit. Individuals considering plastic surgery or cosmetic services have many questions. If they had the opportunity to ask any question to a plastic surgeon, what would they be? We recently asked Richard Schaefer, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon with Agnesian Plastic Surgery & Cosmetic Services, Fond du Lac, some of the most frequently-asked questions about plastic surgery. Here were his responses.

Why do people undergo plastic surgery? Most individuals who consider plastic surgery or other type of cosmetic services want to look and feel good about their appearance - help turn back the hands of time a few years - or they may be uncomfortable with some facet of their appearance.

What is the most common plastic surgery procedure? The most common non-operative cosmetic surgery procedures include injectables – such as Botox and Juvederm - while the most common operative surgical procedures are eyelids (blepharoplasty) and tummy tucks (abdominoplasty).

How do I know what procedure is right for me? During the initial appointment, I assess which non-surgical and surgical options are appropriate for the individual. I will then review the benefits, alternatives and limitations of each option. From there, we help guide the patient in selecting the procedure that is right for them. Oftentimes, it is not a matter of what is the best procedure, but rather what is the best procedure for the patient.

What non-surgical options are available? There are many non-surgical options from topical application of skin care products, to light and laser-based skin tightening and toning, to minimally-invasive injection procedures with Botox and fillers.

How do I select a plastic surgeon? When selecting a plastic surgeon, individuals should check if the physician is certified by the American Board of Plastic

Surgery. It is also important to know if he or she is on staff at your local hospital, so that if you require follow-up care after surgery or in the middle of the night, your provider can admit you to the hospital and be able to meet your specific care needs.

How old are most people when they choose to have cosmetic surgery? The most common age group for cosmetic surgery is for individuals 35 to 55 year olds.

Is plastic surgery safe? Yes, cosmetic surgery is extremely safe when performed in the controlled setting of an accredited operating room either in a surgery center or hospital with a board-certified plastic surgeon, as well as qualified personnel including technicians, assistants, operating room nurses, recovery room nurses and anesthesiologists.

How much recovery time will I need? There is no set definition for when recovery is complete, and my answer varies based on the procedure, individual and employment needs of my patient. Even with surgery, some patients may go out for dinner the night of surgery while others may choose to be at home resting in bed or on the couch for a week or so.

Are silicone breast implants safe? Silicone breast implants are safe and have been available to women over 22 since they were reapproved in 2006.

Plastic surgery is a very personal process. What does a plastic surgeon do to guarantee my privacy? Providers of plastic surgery services - like all healthcare providers - understand and respect the privacy of all their patients. Plastic surgery facilities are often designed with patient privacy in mind. The Agnesian Plastic Surgery & Cosmetic Service, 1088 S. Main Street in Fond du Lac location, is now set apart from the main Agnesian HealthCare campus.

Is financing available for plastic surgery? Various financing options are available to interested, qualified patients. Agnesian Plastic Surgery & Cosmetic Services offers two financing programs, one through National Exchange Bank

and another through Care Credit. Patients can discretely and privately complete an application form and decide which program is right for them. A plastic surgeon guides patients in selecting the procedure which right for them. To learn more about the services offered by Richard Schaefer, MD, board-certified plastic surgeon, call (920) 926-8614 to schedule a private consultation or request a complete brochure of services offered. Edith’s Local bridal shop cites trends, offers large selection of bridal gowns on site Dorothy Bliskey Special to the Reporter

early 500 bridal gowns are in stock for brides to purchase “on the spot” at Edith’s of Fond du Lac on Main Street. Edith’s, 9 S. Main St., is billed as the largest full-service bridal shop in Wisconsin at nearly 17,000 square feet. The store is owned and operated by Cathy and Tom Deitte. It was started in 1937 by Tom’s Aunt Edith (Deitte) Murphy. “An increasing number of brides are buying off the rack,” said Cathy Deitte. “We have a continual sale of in-store bridal gowns we stock in sizes 4 to 28. A bride can always find something in her price range.” Bridal gowns can be ordered as well. Deitte advises that brides place their orders at least nine months before the wedding. “It can take four to six months to get the dress and three months for alterations,” she said, noting that bridal gowns run one or two sizes smaller than regular clothing. A bridal gown purchase at Edith’s can range from $200 to $2,500, depending partially on whether or not the dress has a train. The average price spent on a gown at Edith’s falls between $700 and $900.

Next PAGE: Julie Schmitz and Megan Willis are dressed in bridal and bridesmaid attire. Sharon Paul is dressed in mother-of the-bride attire, and Caleb Ziegelbauer is dressed as the groom.

While Cathy oversees the gowns, her husband Tom heads the tuxedo section, where he stocks 1,200 tuxedos and 2,000 tuxedo vests at any given time, also giving customers the option to buy right off the rack.

For more information on Edith’s of Fond du Lac, go to www.ediths.com or call (920) 921-2420. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

Trends in bridal gowns Trends come and go, but Deitte is seeing a demand for sweetheart necklines or strapless gowns, with the skirt portion more fitted in the hip area before it flips or flares out far below the hip. “I’ve also noticed more and more requests for the ball gown look, where it’s fitted to the mid-hip line and then billows out from there.” Sleeves seem to be a thing of the past. “You hardly see any dresses with sleeves anymore,” Deitte said. “If they use sleeves at all, it’s more of a sheer three-quarter length or cap sleeve.” Ruffles, feathers, flowers and rhinestones are popular embellishments on bridal gowns. Deitte notes that ruffles are trendy — whether it’s big layered ruffles that form the skirt or small ruffled layers that form a flower design on the skirt. Three-dimensional flowers can be found on the hemlines, bodices and other areas of the bride’s dress and are usually the same color as the dress. Rhinestones are often added to the design for a little sparkle. “We’re seeing everything from very small three-dimensional flowers to huge magnolias,” she said. “Lighter- weight fabrics are definitely the way brides are going these days. Charmeuse is big this year because it’s lightweight and drapes nicely. It’s cut on the bias so it has a stretch.” She notes that other lightweight fabrics such as taffeta, chiffon and organza are in demand. “Regular satin is gorgeous, but it is heavier in weight,” she noted. Color trends are relatively unchanged, according to Deitte, who says brides choose primarily white, diamond white (an off-white) or ivory. Trains and veils remain popular. “It seems the setting has a lot to do with whether or not a bride chooses a dress with a train,” Deitte said. The short cage veil with an open mesh weave is making a comeback and is similar to those worn by Hollywood brides of the 1950s-60s. “Veils are holding their own in popularity. It’s a steady purchase and about three-quarters of our customers use a veil. Many don’t feel the look is complete without it,” she said. All eyes, including Deitte’s, are on what dress is chosen for England’s royal wedding. “Everyone is waiting to see what that bridal gown will look like. It will definitely affect bridal gown trends,” Deitte said. “As soon as manufacturers are aware of her gown, they will be making similar designs.” “At Edith’s we strive to find that perfect dress for each bride — the dress of her dreams. It can’t be just OK, it has to produce that ‘wow’ factor.”

Catering

Q&A 10 Questions

for your Wedding Caterer A great caterer will do more than just make good food. He or she will pay great attention to details, making sure the presentation is just right, the food and wine are served at the right temperature, the servers are well-groomed and attentive and that clean-up is efficient and thorough. So how do you make sure the caterer you hire is a great one? By asking the right questions. 14

May I have references? Most caterers get their business from word of mouth. Ask for at least 10 former clients and call as many as you can. Ask questions such as * Was the caterer easy to work with? * Was the service efficient and non-intrusive? * Was the food delicious, and did it arrive hot? * Were there any problems that came up and how did the caterer deal with them?

Do you handle special menu requests? You may have guests with special menu needs, such as food allergies, vegan or kosher requirements. Make sure your caterer will accommodate these needs. Perfect

harmony– Reception music completes wedding day on sweet note Monica M. Walk Special to The Reporter

Vows have been made, rings exchanged, and toasts made to the newlyweds. Family, friends and the happy couple are now ready to celebrate the union with an energetic party, usually filled with music and dancing. The wedding reception is officially on. Creating that party-of-all-parties requires the bride and groom to have a vision for their post-wedding celebration, and to work with entertainment professionals to bring it into focus. Finding music pros generally happens through word-of-mouth, attending other wedding receptions, getting recommendations from reception hall staff and florists, or investigating local advertisements. Planning an evening of music includes many choices, beginning with: Live, or Recorded?

Live excitement DJs have dominated the wedding reception scene since the late 1990s, says local musician and Holy Family Community director of liturgy and music Paul Thelen, who played receptions almost weekly through the early ’90s. Along with his talented daughters, Thelen still plays at wedding ceremonies, and during wedding cocktails and dinners. “I think people are used to hearing their favorite songs performed by the original artists on recordings,” Thelen said. “People are now conditioned to automatically think DJ when planning a wedding, and don’t even know there are other options.” Jane Shirek, of the five-piece variety band The Downtowners, wants brides and grooms to know live music is a reception option in Fond du Lac, and that many musicians are listed on the website of the Fond du Lac Musicians Association. Along with bandmate husband, Bob, Jane Shirek takes pride in The Downtowners offering of a wide range of musical styles, including Big Band & Swing, ’50s–’60s Rock, Jazz & Blues, Polka and Old-Time music, Country, Latin, Ballroom and Ethnic music. Combined, the group members play a total of 13 instruments and all five sing. “Bob is good at reading the crowd,” she explained. “We play a variety of styles, and whatever the crowd responds to, we play more of. Our goal is to keep the crowd there as long as possible, and we are usually successful. Seeing people live onstage adds to the excitement of the night…. five live people can communicate better with the crowd than just one.”

Vast selection While a DJ generally does work the reception alone, those working for a company have back-up staff and equipment on call. The DJ brings along a vast selection of music recorded by original artists, sound equipment, and often special lighting effects and multi-media montages of the wedding couple to accompany the music.

“We sit down with the bride and groom and let them tell us what they want. We offer some advice, but it’s their reception, not ours.” – Paul Millard, booking agent, Record Entertainment

|  Sunday, January 23, 2011  |  www.fdlreporter.com

Many are also willing and able to lead dances, and all usually perform an emcee function, making announcements as needed or requested. “We sit down with the bride and groom and let them tell us what they want. We offer some advice, but it’s their reception, not ours,” said Paul Millard, booking agent for Fond du Lac’s Record Entertainment, founded by Terry Davis Holzmann in 1983 and sporting the tagline, “All the music and all the fun.” While trends in music change a bit, Millard finds certain reception basics remain firm. “Grand marches are still popular…. and if there is crowd involvement (in a song), it remains popular,” he noted. The reception generally begins with a mix of well-known music from the ’50s through ’70s, and Millard estimates that up to 80 percent of the music is wellknown by most guests. Newer music usually is played later in the event.

And rather than the traditional, steady stream of special dances strung together, an evening of general dancing may be punctuated by the grand march, the couple’s first dance, the fatherdaughter dance, and the mother-son dance. “The DJ keeps things on track,” Millard noted. In their emcee role, DJs may also coordinate guest participation, such as calling for the newlyweds to kiss. Rather than just the traditional “clinking” of drink glasses, attendees now may have to sing a love song, tell a story about the couple, or make a hole-in-one on an indoor putting green before the couple will pucker up.

Technology trends The delivery of recorded music at receptions has changed more drastically than the music selected for the event. Where DJs once brought records, cassettes or CDs, most music now is downloaded as electronic files and played via laptop computers on sophisticated sound systems.

DJ SERVICE

Both Record Entertainment and Matt’s DJ Service purchase downloaded music and pay royalties in order to own the rights to put the tunes on system hard drives.

Let us set the mood for YOUR memoriess If you hate the chicken dance... so do we!

High-end, current equipment is the hallmark of Matt’s DJ Service, according to general manager Matthew Nehring, who founded the company in 2003 as an offshoot of Nehring Entertainment.

Matt’s DJ Service has won the Reporter’s Readers’ Choice “best wedding DJ” category for three years running. A signature grand march entrance is a draw for many clients.

Matt’s DJ Service runs music through disc jockey programs designed for computers, outfitted with exceptional sound cards. Emergency backups with the complete music library are supplied via iPad, iPod touch and classic iPods.

Bridal Guide Special:

“We are the only ones in the state of Wisconsin who can say we provide concert quality, touringgrade audio speakers by GBL,” Nehring said. “We use the same wireless mics as on the last season of American Idol. All of our equipment is company owned, and I personally maintain it and make sure it is 100 percent operational.”

Mention this ad and we will include cocktail and dinner music FREE with your booking!

Nehring’s company also offers concert quality lighting, including lasers, LED, white diamond lights and Globol lights, which project an image on the dance floor. High quality photo montages set to music selected by the wedding couple and created on Mac pro desktop computers like those used at Universal Studios are another option. A multi-media option also is available from Record Entertainment.

“I believe when a client books a DJ, they are paying for a service and the DJ needs to be a piece of that night. People should spend time picking out their entertainment,” Nehring said. “We believe it is the most important part, other than the wedding itself. We strive to keep the dance floor full. At the end of the night, when the bride says it was good, that makes it all worthwhile.”

unting down the perfect wedding ensemble, negotiating seating arrangements with squabbling relatives, honeymoon flight reservations that change on a dime - how did something that should be so joyful become so stressful?

Scent-sational

Planning a wedding can be a high-pressure time, even for couples with a clear vision of what they want and the budget to accomplish it. One aspect of your wedding that doesn’t have to cause stress is choosing wedding favors. Go with something simple, elegant and timeless that will fit the lifestyle of virtually every guest - aromatherapy.

ideas for wedding favors

Scent is a mood-setting gift that can help establish the tone for your reception, and remind guests afterward how much they enjoyed sharing your big day. You don’t have to give every guest a pricey personal essence or resort to costly scented candles to achieve the perfect aromatherapy wedding favor. Making your own favors not only saves you money, it puts your personal stamp on the mementoes your guests will keep long after the wedding day has passed. What’s more, says Tom Havran, an aromatherapy expert with the personal products company Aura Cacia, “making aromatherapy favors together can help a harried couple slow down, refocus and remember what’s really important - that they’re about to begin a wonderful life together and that the special guests they’ve assembled will bear witness to it all.”

ARA Content

Havran offers some tips for using aromatherapy to combat wedding-planning jitters and create memorable favors: Surround yourself with scents that soothe. A potpourri that features real lavender flowers is a wonderful way to bring comforting, peaceful aroma into your home. Sprinkle the flowers with lavender essential oil and tuck a sachet of the mixture in with your bed linens. Place a bowl on the dining room table. Store some in a mesh bag inside the luggage you’ll be using for your honeymoon. Make the same lavender-based scent the centerpiece of your aromatherapy favors by placing it in small, handmade sachets that guests can carry home. Planning a holiday wedding? Create a “wise men’s favor” by recycling an empty tea tin. Paint it with your wedding colors or cover it with festive gold paper. Fill the tin with coarse salt and sprinkle with 16 drops of eucalyptus essential oil, 16 drops of lemon essential oil, 16 drops of frankincense and/or myrrh essential oils, and replace the lid. Include instructions to release this ancient sacred scent by

To make the mineral bath, combine the essential oils with these ingredients (readily available at a drugstore or pharmacy):

• 1-1/2 cups sea salt

• 1 cup sea salt

• 1 cup Epsom salt

• 1 cup Epsom salt

• 1/4 cup sodium bicarbonate

Here’s the essential oil blend you’ll create to add to the following mineral bath and massage products:

For an exfoliating foot scrub, mix the essential oils with: • 2 cups granulated sugar
