Cernik Sees Beauty in Door County Scenery By Ruth Johnson

“The scenery in Door County is, hands down, the best thing – absolutely breathtaking,” says Elizabeth Cernik, cover contest winner of this year’s Key to the Door Vacation Guide. Her cover photo features the north pier head light at the Sturgeon Bay Coast Guard Station. Cernik, 38 and her husband Jason ventured to Door County last September to celebrate their 11th wedding anniversary. While driving around, they saw the sign for the Coast Guard Station along the shipping canal and stopped to explore the area.

“Imagine my delight when I saw that gorgeous red pier head staring back at me in the late afternoon sunlight,” she says. Originally from Neillsville, her family has called Black River Falls home since 2001. Cernik has three children, two of whom she has homeschooled, and she works part-time for the area’s Meals on Wheels program. Her family loves the outdoors. Cernik recalls a recent family photo shoot, “I don’t think she [the photographer] knew quite what to think of us, as we only wanted a few regular photos, and we didn’t want any indoors. We wanted everything done in our camo with the guns and bows. That’s just who we are.” Cernik says photography is her passion. She feels it’s the perfect outlet to portray how beautiful the world truly is. “I’m still using the very first ‘big girl’ camera that I bought, a Canon Rebel XS, and I plan to use it until it dies,” she says. While Cernik feels Door County is a perfect getaway for couples, she and her husband have brought their children to experience salmon fishing. They enjoy the outdoors, camping and spending time with family. l

candles! Local Arts Entities Celebrate Anniversaries Compiled by Ed Huyck and Heidi Hodges

Door County arts are experiencing an interesting year–the year of anniversaries. Many– let’s say most–Door County arts venues are celebrating major anniversaries, from 80-year observations to 10-year milestones. 20 | Your Key to the Door | 2015

Peninsula Players The goal for the 80th season at Players is the same as the past 79: “Make it the best year we’ve ever had,” says Executive Director Brian Kelsey. A diverse set of five shows are on the offering, opening with the world premiere of A Real Lulu, June 16-July 5. (920-868-3287; www.peninsulaplayers.com)

The Clearing The Clearing, also celebrating 80 years, is a folk school founded in 1935 by landscape architect Jens Jensen. This “school of the soil” is located within 128 acres of forest and meadows overlooking dramatic Green Bay shoreline. It

anniversaries

was built as a place where ordinary people could, as the name implies, “clear one’s mind by reconnecting with nature and one another.” (920-854-4088; www.theclearing.org)

Peninsula School of art Founded in 1965 by Chicago artist Madeline Tripp Tourtelot, the Peninsula School of Art celebrates its golden (50th) anniversary this year. Today the Fish Creek school offers year-round workshops and exhibits in many media from watercolor and photography to metal art and pottery. Classes and exhibits are held in the Guenzel Gallery, built in 1996. (920868-3455; www.peninsulaschoolofart.org)

Birch Creek Music Performance Center It’s both the 40th anniversary of the Egg-Harbor-area music academy and concert series and the 125th anniversary of Dutton Concert Barn, where legions of students, teachers and visiting performers have played through the decades. The music series opens June 18 and includes classical, percussion and steel band and jazz. This season also includes the second year of vocal jazz, Aug. 11-15. (868-3763; www.birchcreek.org)

Miller Art Museum Through the past four decades, the Sturgeon Bay venue has been, “A special venue for artists to exhibit and visitors to enjoy,” says longtime (now retired) Executive Director Bonnie Hartmann. The Miller has seen several expansions over the year to highlight its collections and pay homage to its namesake, Gerhard CF Miller. This summer’s highlights include an homage to Miller with the exhibit Gerhard CF Miller: The Artist and His Mentor ( July 18-Sept. 8.) Also this season is the anniversary a special exhibition, the 40th Juried Annual (Sept. 12-Nov. 3). (920-7460707; www.millerartmuseum.org)

Peninsula Music Festival Victor Yampolsky can’t believe it’s been three decades since he took the baton at the Peninsula Music Festival. Since then, he has overseen the transformation of the orchestra as it moved to the Door Community Auditorium and became a full symphony ensemble. The season features an ambitious repertoire and personal touches, like the overture to The Barber of Seville, which Yampolsky remembers trying to pick out on a piano as a young boy in Moscow. Aug. 4-22. (920-854-4060; www.musicfestival.com)

American Folklore Theatre/ Northern Sky Theater The former AFT makes a big change for its 25th anniversary, unveiling its new name: Northern Sky Theater. That comes after years of work (see related story), but won’t change the company’s signature mix of regional musicals performed under the stars at Peninsula State Park. This summer season includes two world premieres with an autumn season to follow at the Door Community Auditorium. (920-854-6117; www.northernskytheater.com)

Midsummer’s Music Festival Twenty-five years ago, Jim Berkenstock just hoped his handful of chamber music concerts would go off without a hitch. Now, Midsummer’s Music has grown far beyond the name, presenting more than 30 shows in Door County throughout the year. The summer’s festivities include a return to the Trenchard home on June 16, the place where the festival got its start. The season starts June 12. (920-854-7008; www.midsummersmusic.com)

Steel Bridge Songfest It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since the inaugural Sturgeon Bay music festival, inspired and initiated by a grassroots effort to save the iconic steel bridge from the wrecking ball. Both the bridge and the festival survived; to build public appreciation for the bridge and historic downtown district, a week-long celebration is held every June in and around the Holiday Music Motel. Songwriters and musicians from around the world, including Jackson Browne, Jane Wiedlin (from the Go-Gos), James McMurtry and hundreds of others, James McMurtry have performed. This year’s festival is held June 12-15. (920-559-0384; www.steelbridgesong fest.org) l

The Sky’s the Limit Theatre Troupe Gets New Name, Refreshed Outlook By Ed Huyck

Twenty-five years in, and American Folklore Theatre (AFT) is going through some changes. That doesn’t mean you won’t be able to see clever musical comedies against the backdrop of Peninsula State Park anymore. Let’s be clear: That’s not changing. Just the name. This year, AFT has transformed into Northern Sky Theater—a name they believe better reflects what is happening on stage. “We decided to change the name because American Folklore Theatre hadn’t really fit us for at least a couple of decades,” says Fred “Doc” Heide, whose involvement with the group goes back four decades, when it was known as the Heritage Ensemble. 38 | Your Key to the Door | 2015

In 1990, Heide and co-founder Gerald Pelrine figured the theater would continue with the same mix of shows drawn from American music and folklore. As Fred Alley became more involved in writing shows, there was a shift. The new musicals were often folksy, but not folkloric. “They usually were based loosely in American history, but didn’t necessarily spring from what most people think ‘folklore’ is. Unfortunately, we learned that a significant segment of our potential audience thought we were doing shows about Paul Bunyan or Pecos Bill and were staying away because that wasn’t what they wanted to see,” Heide says. The name Northern Sky Theater came from playwright Dave Hudson. “All of us liked the name for a number of reasons—it evokes our beautiful setting under the stars, identifies us as part of the northern region and even subtly references the title of Fred Alley’s first album, ‘Beneath the Northern Sky,’” Heide says.

performing arts As an homage to the late Alley, his much-loved Lumberjacks in Love returns in 2015, presented indoors for the first time during the company’s fall season. The summer promises a pair of world premieres. No Bones About It will take the audience to the world of competitive barbeques in this twist on Romeo and Juliet by Hudson and his musical collaborator Paul Libman. It’s a path the pair have gone down before, with shows like Muskie Love and Bing! Along with making everyone hungry for ribs and coleslaw, the show also promises to have a happier ending than Shakespeare managed 400 years ago. (8 p.m. Mondays and Fridays; 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Opens June. 15) The second premiere, When Butter Turns to Gold, offers a classic melodrama, compete with songs by Randi Wolfe and Ron Barnett, and a script by Peter Welkin. Can a plucky heroine and the strapping young hero save the family farm from the dastardly Friedrich von Fouler? (6 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays; 8 p.m. Thursdays. Opens June 11.) Hudson teams up with Colin Welford for the return of Strings Attached, which was a hit during the 2014 season. It continues the Shakespeare tradition, as well, as a pair of twins are separated at birth, ala the Bard’s A Comedy of Errors. In this version, one twin is devoted to the Hawaiian ukulele; the other to the banjo. Hilarity, and stringed musical mayhem, results. (8 p.m. Tuesdays; 8:30 p.m. Saturdays. Opens June 16.) All of this should calm any fears that the name change would alter what the theater offered. In fact, longtime patrons were included in the naming process. “One of our decisions was to reach out to our fan base for other suggestions just to make sure we didn’t miss anything good. We got hundreds of them, but none felt better to us than Northern Sky,” Heide says. As noted above, this is the second time the organization has changed its name. “And this change is not nearly as big as the previous transition,” Hedie says. Twenty-five years ago, the organization was not just rebranding, but setting off on its own as it ended its longtime association with the University of Wisconsin. That meant, “Forming a new board and searching for a completely new direction based on the interests of our small group of writers. This time around, we’re just rechristening the theater,” Heide says. Northern Sky Theater’s summer season runs June 11 through Aug. 29 at the Peninsula State Park Amphitheater in Fish Creek. Tickets are $13-$27. For more information, call 854-6117 or visit www.northernskytheater.com.

theater

Since 1990, American Folklore Theatre had set its stage deep in the woods in Peninsula State Park. This year, the company unveiled their new name: Northern Sky Theater, with the same mission of providing original, professional musicals. Their stage, surrounded by tall trees and covered with nothing but a starlit sky, is classic Door County. The season runs June 11 through August 29, followed by an indoor fall season, September 4 through October 17. Tickets are sold at the theater one hour prior to show time or in advance by calling 920-854-6117. For the 2015 season, the company rolls out two world premiers: No Bones About It and When Butter Churns to Gold, in addition to reprising Strings Attached. The fall season brings back fan favorite Lumberjacks in Love at the Door Community Auditorium. A state park sticker is not required to see the summer shows in the park. Visit www.northernskytheater.com for information on the shows. Situated on a spectacular piece of waterfront property on Peninsula Players Road between Egg Harbor and Fish Creek, the Peninsula Players celebrates its 80th season— America’s oldest professional resident summer theater. Its new, modern stagehouse is in keeping with the theater’s open-air pavilion Peninsula feel for which it Players. Contributed is famous. The Photo. season, consisting of five plays, runs from June 16 through October 18. THEATER continued on page 40

Your Guide to Family Adventures By Kathy Steebs

Have kids?

Door County offers many fun and educational options for the whole family. Strike out and create your own adventure, or try some of these ideas.

42 | Your Key to the Door | 2015

Get a taste of Wisconsin at Schopf’s Hilltop Dairy, just east of Carlsville at 5169 County Road I. A viewing window allows a peek into the dairy barn and the high-tech milking process. Kids will enjoy tasting homemade ice cream, “milking” Cookie the Mechanical Cow and exploring the outside playground. Visit the corn maze in late summer and autumn, but be sure to bring comfortable shoes and plenty of sunscreen. Plan for a picnic lunch at Sunset Park, 747 N. 3rd Avenue in Sturgeon Bay. This 41-acre park has playground equipment, Frisbee golf course, tennis courts, a basketball court, walking paths, circuit training course, a covered pavilion, flush toilets and a sandy beach. Stay late to catch the sunset over the bay. Ottumba Park, on the other side of the bay, also features playground equipment and a beach. Just five miles east of Sturgeon Bay at 3219 Lake Forest Park Road, is a Door County Land Trust trail that is an easy hike for families. This milelong trail follows upland areas near the Kellner Fen Preserve, an inland wetland that once housed a cranberry farm and is home to a variety of rare plants, animals and migrating birds. The fen is also a breeding ground for the federally endangered Hine’s Emerald Dragonfly. No bathroom facilities here, so plan ahead! Kids will love the train theme of PC Junction restaurant located in Peninsula Center, at the intersection of County Roads A and E. Arrive early to get your name on the wait list for the best seat in the house—the counter where the train delivers your food and drinks. While waiting, your kids will enjoy the large outdoor playground—especially the pedal cars. Looking for a sandy beach with changing rooms, bathrooms, playground, pavilion with picnic tables, and rental kayaks and paddleboards? Egg Harbor Village Beach at 4748 Alpine Road is the place for you. For a treat, follow the walking path into the village of Egg Harbor to Double Delites for freshly made gelato. After a long day of fun, be sure to stop at the Northern Grill, 10573 Country Walk Drive in Sister Bay, for a relaxing family dinner. Large outdoor seating area with expansive playground equipment and ping-pong tables allow parents to keep an eye on their kids while enjoying a cocktail before dinner. l

Don’t Overlook These Fave Spots! • The Farm, Sturgeon Bay—Arrive early to feed the goats, play with kittens and tour a working farm. • Egg Harbor Fun Park, Egg Harbor—Go-karts, mini-golf, paint ball target range, batting range, indoor arcade, pizza and more. • Red Putter Mini Golf, Ephraim—Vintage mini-golf course with a unique theme for every hole. Fun for beginners;challenging enough for serious players. • Hands On Art Studio, Fish Creek—From simple to complicated, choose a project and create a unique art piece. Paint a t-shirt or small ceramic piece, create a mosaic, fused glass artwork and more. • Not Licked Yet, Fish Creek— Frozen custard and a fantastic playground overlooking the creek that gave Fish Creek its name. • Northern Sky Theater, Peninsula State Park—This musical theater will leave you laughing and is always family-friendly. No need to buy a park sticker to attend the show. • The Patio Restaurant, Sister Bay—Kid friendly “fast” food in northern Door County featuring burgers, hot dogs and homemade soups. Dine on picnic tables next to the playground around back. • The Skyway Drive-In Movie Theatre, Fish Creek— Savor the outdoor experience by arriving as soon as the gate opens. Park in the front row and let the kids play Submitted in the spacious playground Photo by before the movie begins. Kyle Cross.

The Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay this season features the newly-created exhibit Sea Dogs (opening May 15), exploring the affiliations and enterprises that bond dogs and humans in a wide spectrum of nautical environments. Four additional galleries spotlight the area’s rich shipbuilding heritage, the remarkable collection of lighthouses and a stunning collection of large-scale models. There are also daily tours on the museum’s impressively restored museum vessel—the 150-ft. Tug John Purves (open from May through October.) The museum is open year-round. Historic houses include the Warren House and a nearby privy, the Schopf House, originally built by a German immigrant family, the Kohl Fish House and the Hans Hanson House. A one-room schoolhouse, Vignes School-used until the 1960s as a school, and later as the Clay Banks Town Hall--is another unique 50 | Your Key to the Door | 2015

attraction, as is the Greene General Store with its candy counter and wood stove, and the Kohl Fish House, highlighting commercial fisherman. The Petersen Granary, built in 1905, which once housed migrant workers, was moved from its site on Lily Bay Road and is now the temporary home of the Blacksmith’s Shop who are present every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. The Village is open June 14 through the end of September. Hours are 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. or by appointment for large groups or tours. Special programs are presented on Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (and occasionally Thursday evenings at 6 p.m.) Visit www.historicalvillage.doorcountyhistoricalsociety.org for updated schedule and information. Phone 920-421-2332. Farther north, the Ephraim Historical Foundation oversees several museum buildings. These include the Anderson Barn History Museum, built in 1880 as a barn for the Aslag Anderson family. The barn contains a hands-on hayloft, a popular feature for children. The Anderson Store dates from 1858 and was in business for 100 years. The building is interpreted as a general store with original, authentic merchandise, including brand new shoes from 1910. The Iverson House on Moravia Street belonged to the minister who built Ephraim’s Moravian Church, and it served as a meeting hall until that church was built. In 1853, it was the earliest frame house in Northern Door. Pioneer Schoolhouse was a one-room center of learning for grades 1-8, and sometimes younger siblings came along. The building was rescued from demolition through the efforts of teacher Helen Sohns, who, in the 1940s, appealed to community leaders to preserve it. Behind the schoolhouse is the Goodletson Cabin, built in the 1850s by a family from Norway. It was originally constructed on Eagle Island (today’s Horseshoe Island) and probably was moved by skidding it across the ice. Summer season runs June 19 through August 29. Walking and tram tours are available. Through August 29, hours are Tuesday

through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Anderson Barn History Museum opens at 10. The Autumn season begins September 4 and runs through October 17, Friday and Saturdays (hours are the same.) Visit www. ephraim.org for more information. Sister Bay’s Corner of the Past settlement, at the south entrance to the village on Highway 57, features The Old Anderson House Museum, a 19th-century farmhouse that was brought across the ice from Marinette in 1895. It holds heirlooms, artifacts and keepsakes from this area. Other buildings are a granary, a migrant worker’s cabin and old preacher’s cabin and loom house. Other attractions include a chicken coop, a Big Belle threshing machine, 100-year-old sawmill and the original mail sleigh that served the village. Opening is June 16 through Oct. 3, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $5 per adult; children are free. Included in the admission is tours of 15 buildings and use of a Discovery Pen—a new audio system for tours.

“Half the Fun is Getting There!”

There is also a Farmers Market on Saturdays June 27 through October 3, 8 a.m. to noon. Contact the Sister Bay Historical Society at (920) 8547680 or visit www.sisterbayhistory.org. And near the tip of the Peninsula, next to the Grand View property above Ellison Bay, is the Liberty Grove Historical Society museum site. There you’ll find a log cabin dating to 1882, the first German Lutheran Church in Door County, moved from Ellison Bay. Today used as a museum, the building contains artifacts from local fishermen and families in Liberty Grove. There are also two shacks on the property, historically used to lodge migrant orchard workers, moved from Woodcrest Road. One of the structures was used as a summer kitchen where women cherry pickers carved their names, with dates, on the rafters. Additionally, a restored corn crib, a granary and Pine Cottage, formerly part of the Liberty Park cottages, are on the site. The latter is being restored by a couple who spent their wedding night there. For information on events and hours, visit www.libertygrovehistorical.org. l

Follow the

music trail

Door County is rich with concert treasures By Jeanne Kuhns

Journey up and down the peninsula, and you’ll find practically every small town along the trail has its own way of offering up the gift of music during the beautiful summer months. 52 | Your Key to the Door | 2014

Best of all? Most outdoor concerts are free. It’s a unique experience, and each venue in the county has its own flavor. (Many communities sponsor these concerts as a means of attracting visitors.) Outdoor listening is wonderful and, perhaps, a little raw. The weather may be balmy and sunny, or windy with a possible storm approaching. But the camaraderie and happiness of sharing music together in lawn chairs, on blankets, or sitting on rock walls and park benches, is a beautiful thing. (You need to supply your own blankets or lawn chairs. And a sweater or jacket is recommended.) What could beat watching a fiery sunset in a village or county park, by crystal blue water, listening to your new favorite band sing the sun down? Who might you hear at these venues? Varied phenomenal options have graced local stages: there is a myriad of well-known local

talent like Lynn Gudmundsen & David Hatch, Katie Dahl, Small Forest, The Nicks, Big Mouth, Julian Hagen, Mark & Seth Raddatz, Wifee & the HuzzBand, Dorothy Scott, pat mAcdonald, melaniejane, Victoria Vox, and Copper Box. There are also many national musical acts that return to the county every season to eager audiences. Memphis phenoms Tommy Burroughs and Eddie Smith, Eric Lewis, and Carolyn Martin are known for their stunning performances; Chicago groups like Sons of the Never Wrong or The Significant Others, and national acts like JD Lang or Switchback have all graced Door County’s public stages. This summer, follow the music trail through the Door Peninsula, and fill your heart with the sound of Door County’s music!

Outdoor musical venues The Sunset Concert Series at the Peg Egan PAC, an outdoor amphitheater in Egg Harbor, allows concert goers a wonderful outdoor musical experience on Sunday nights. Egg Harbor also has a Thursday night concert series in Harborview Park overlooking the marina. www. eggharbordoorcounty.org. right next to Wilson’s, overlooking the water. www.doorcounty.com. Fish Creek has afternoon concerts on Tuesdays under the trees in Noble Park. www. visitfishcreek.com. Sister Bay’s Performance Pavilion in Waterfront Park is home to Wednesday concerts at 3 p.m. or 7 p.m. www.cometosisterbay.com. And Sturgeon Bay has its Harmony by the Bay series on Wednesday evenings in the band shell at Martin Park, near downtown. www. sturgeonbay.net. Take a drive down the lakefront a little bit on a Friday night, and you can catch Algoma’s Concerts in the Park overlooking the lake at Heritage Park. www.algomachamber.org. There are also regular free concerts in smaller settings around the county, many hosted by businesses, shops and restaurants. For instance, you can hear live music at the MacReady’s Artisan Bread Co. gazebo in Egg Harbor on Saturday afternoons. And starting July 4th J. Jeffrey Taylor in Fish Creek will host live concerts on the porch, on alternating Saturday afternoons. A good place to catch updated schedules and performance lineups is the free Key to the Door Weekly tabloid newspaper, a companion to this magazine, available throughout the county. l

wedding indeed! Peninsula is Nuptial Hotspot

story By Heidi Hodges | Photos contributed by Heidi Hodges & Tammy Lutze

Picture an outdoor wedding along the bluffs of Cave Point, with the sound of waves pounding below. Or saying “I do” on a quaint prairie with a rustic barn in the background. Maybe a beach wedding? Or a simple ceremony at a historic Door County church? Perhaps a more lavish affair, with all the bells and whistles, at a high-end resort or club? Or picture an intimate ceremony in front of a fire place at one of the county’s inns or bed and breakfasts. Then, after the license is signed and family photos taken, imagine a “talk about it for years” dinner with dancing all night to the beat of a local band—in an area brimming with nationally-recognized professional musicians. Door County, with its famous scenery and fabulous venues and vendors, has fast become a destination wedding location.

weddings

Yes, while the beautiful scenery alone is an attraction, the county is becoming well-known for another important aspect to the wedding industry: incredibly professional and talented vendors. From A-list caterers, venues, florists, photographers, planners, bands and DJs, the county is a one-stop nuptial shop. “Because they live and work here, the vendors know the Door County-style wedding,” said Carrie Baldwin-Smith, owner of Door County Event Planners. “This is what they specialize in. There is not a mass chaos of a staff—you are working directly with an owner.” Perfectly situated in the heart of the nation, Door County is the ideal location for couples with family and friends spread from coast to coast. Of course, some couples choose the scenic peninsula for reasons other than logistics. For many, Door County holds a special place in their hearts. Some have family ties stretching back through the decades. Others have spent happy childhood vacations here. And some have gotten engaged while on a special visit to the peninsula. They come back to wed because this is where it all started. What is one of the top reasons BaldwinSmith sees for people choosing the peninsula for their destination wedding? “It’s

for the relaxed feel that Door County can give to a wedding,” said Baldwin-Smith. “It’s relaxed for the couple, the guests...for everyone involved. No one is sitting in a traffic jam trying to get to a church. That’s important for couples. And the vendors absolutely know what they are doing. It eliminates a lot of stress.” Whatever the reason, Door County’s wedding industry is making others sit up and take notice. Door County weddings and vendors have been featured on blogs and in local, state and national magazines such as Martha Stewart Weddings. And there are a few other perks that come along with a Door County wedding, besides the top-notch vendors and locations. Having weddings in a vacation hot spot means everyone gets to enjoy a mini holiday. “Couples come up here because their weddings aren’t just eight hours,” said Baldwin-Smith. “By making it a destination wedding, it’s the whole weekend.” l 2015 | Your Key to the Door | 63

Five State Parks, One State Trail Offer Plenty of Wilderness Diversity

Peninsula State Park, an expanse of 3,776 acres, was established in 1910, making it one of Wisconsin’s oldest state parks. Potawatomi State Park is located on County PD off Highway 42-57 south of Sturgeon Bay. The half-mile-long Ancient Shores nature trail is a feature of the 17 miles of trails that wind through its 1,225 acres. The park offers a modern boat ramp with access to great fishing spots in nearby waters. Campers can find a peaceful retreat in the 123 campsites the park pro-

vides, many nestled up next to a mossy bluff. (920) 746-2890. Rock Island State Park is the northern-most park in Door County. Day trippers can enjoy a spectacular sand beach and miles of hiking trails. The park is also popular among campers, with 40 sites, many located along the shore. A magnificent boathouse and the county’s oldest lighthouse are its primary structures. Outside of private boating, access to the island is via the passenger ferry Karfi from Washington Island. (Biking is not allowed on the island.) (920) 847-2235. Newport State Park lies near the tip of the peninsula’s mainland, at the end of County Road NP, north of Ellison Bay. Newport’s 2,373 acres are devoted to a wilderness credo, so there’s only one mile of road for motor vehicles. The road terminates near a sand beach and picnic area from which radiate more than 30 miles of hiking trails, including some 15 miles of unpaved trails suitable for off-road bikes. There are no overnight spaces for RVs, but hardy backpackers can enjoy 16 remote campsites, many on the shores of Lake Michigan. (920) 854-2500. Whitefish Dunes State Park is found off County Road WD from Highway 57, south of Jacksonport. The towering sand dunes of this 863-acre park form the backdrop to one of the best-loved sandy beaches in the Midwest. A two-mile self-guided nature trail highlights the trees and unique plants native to this part of Wisconsin. Behind the ancient dunes are more than 13 miles of hiking trails to explore. This is a day-use park only, meaning there is no camping. (920) 823-2400. Ahnapee State Trail is a 48-mile trail that meanders through Kewaunee and Southern Door County. The level-grade, crushed limestone trail moves through evergreen glades, farmland, prairie and several quaint communities. The Ahnapee Trail is available for hiking, biking, horseback riding and, in the winter, snowmobile riding. No trail pass is required. Access, in Door County, is available just south of the city on Neenah Avenue and also Forestville Dam Park in southern Door County. Visit www.dnr.state.wi.us for information on visiting the Wisconsin State parks. Entry stickers for state parks are required. l

Door’s diverse parks County’s parks offer everything from scenic views and boat launches, to quiet trails and stock car races

One of the most wonderful aspects of Door County is the vast amount of land set aside for parks and recreation. Sprinkled across the landscape are some of the most spectacular locations for sight-seeing, hiking, boating, swimming and other, sometimes unexpected, activities, including winter recreation opportunities. Described here are the peninsula’s county parks. Beyond this list are numerous town parks, nature preserves, Land Trust properties and a handful of other sanctuaries to discover. door county parks continued on page 80

Kayaking at Cave Point. Contributed Photo by Phillip Klasskin. Cave Point. Contributed Photo by Carole Toepke.

Cave Point, one the county’s most popular destinations, is a magical place located near Jacksonport. The park stands above a shallow sea cave and dazzling limestone bluffs along the shoreline of Lake Michigan. On windy summer days, freshwater mist fills the air as waves crash impressively against the rocky bluff. During the winter, cold spins the mist into whimsical art of icicles and frozen waves. A sizable and accessible gazebo can be rented to provide the perfect backdrop for weddings and special occasions. Another favorite that boasts a bit of adventure, as well as a dose of maritime history, is Cana Island Lighthouse near Baileys Harbor. Park the car and take a careful walk across the rock causeway for a rare opportunity to climb up a still-functioning navigation lighthouse tower. From the catwalk, enjoy an unbeatable view of Lake Michigan’s shoreline. The Door County Maritime Museum oversees the 140-year-old lighthouse, which is open to visitors daily May 80 | Your Key to the Door | 2015

through October for a modest admission fee. Located in the remnants of the Leathem and Smith Company’s stone quarry north of Sturgeon Bay, George K. Pinney (formerly the Olde Stone Quarry) is surrounded by the impressive dolomite walls left behind from the quarry days. The setting is perfect for picnics, sunset watching and fishing. A modern six-lane boat launch and handicapped-accessible fishing pier provide access to the prime bass, northern and perch fishing waters of Green Bay. Scuba divers can enjoy exploring two shipwrecks, the Joseph L. Hurd and the Mueller, located in shallow waters adjacent to the park. Ellison Bluff, a State Natural Area near Ellison Bay, offers unparalleled views of Green Bay and is a spectacular place to watch a sunset. Accessible hiking trails can be found under the forest canopy, and adventurous visitors can give the challenging multiple-step GPS-guided geocache treasure hunt a try. Nearby is Door Bluff

countyparks

Headlands, which also features a high overlook of Green Bay and offers challenging hiking trails and breathtaking waterline views for kayakers. A bay side sandy beach can be found south of Egg Harbor at Frank E. Murphy park, a hub of summer activities with a playground, volleyball court, picnic area and pavilion. The park is also home to the annual Door County Triathlon in July. Several county parks are located on Lake Michigan’s shoreline, including Southern Door’s Robert LaSalle. Retrace the French explorer’s landing point in 1679, and enjoy the rise over the cobblestone beach. Children will enjoy the playground in the lower level of the park. Also found lakeside is Baileys Harbor Ridges and its newly rehabilitated sand beach. On breezy days, this park is the perfect spot to catch a breathtaking glimpse of local kite boarders riding the wind and waves. A quiet haven for serious naturalists and visitors interested in a challenging hike on unmarked trails is Lyle-Harter-Matter Sanctuary and Meridian near Jacksonport. A highway wayside is the only access point to both of the State Natural Areas, which contain rock outcroppings that showcase the Niagara Escarpment and forested ridges and swales of past lake shorelines. The tallest sand dune in the county is hidden under a forested carpet in the Sanctuary near Kangaroo Lake. In southern Door County, find Sugar Creek just a bit off the beaten path along the bay shore. It now features an 18-hole disc golf course through 20 acres of hardwood forest. Forestville Dam along the Ahnapee River is a quiet inland setting for kayakers and also offers a new pier for catchand-release fishing. Visitors can walk on the dam’s spillway to enjoy a spectacular view, then stay and play at the playground. The park provides access to the scenic Ahnapee State Trail that is a

public pathway for biking, hiking, horseback riding and winter snowmobiling. The trail follows 12 miles of the retired railroad line of Ahnapee and Western. John Miles not only hosts the Door County Fair in August but has multiple soccer fields, a playground, and is home to the county’s only stock car racetrack. Visitors are likely to see 4-H horse drill teams practicing in summer or special events such as the Century Ride or American Cancer Society Relay for Life. For brilliant fall colors (and history of a horrific tornado of fire that swallowed an early settlement in the area) visit historic Tornado Memorial Park, a quick stop off Highway 57 south of Sturgeon Bay. Local fishermen have enjoyed access to the frozen waters of Green Bay for winter ice fishing for decades by way of Chaudoir’s Dock, Robert M. Carmody and George K. Pinney. Like Pinney Park, Carmody is a modern, accessible boat launch into Green Bay and its renown fishing grounds. A fast fair-weather launch into Lake Michigan is Lily Bay, which leads to a 3-mile stretch of shallow reef north of Sturgeon Bay called “The Bank,” a hotspot for salmon and lake trout. Enjoy the scenery and a bit of adventure with a ride on the ferry from the Peninsula to Washington Island to enjoy a serene waterside picnic and the sandy beach at Percy Johnson park. A Door County Tradition:

Fish Boils Story and Photos by Heidi Hodges

The fish boil has long been a fixture on the Door County culinary map. This unique dinner is traditionally served with fresh Lake Michigan whitefish, new potatoes and small onions—all covered with drawn butter—accompanied by coleslaw, bread and, of course, Door County cherry pie for dessert. The ingredients and cooking style have their roots so deep in tradition, no one knows exactly how it started. But several theories exist. It may have begun in early lumberjack camps, as a way to quickly and cheaply feed the hungry hordes. Or Scandinavian fishermen may have started the custom to feed large numbers of workers. No matter what the origins were, the meal was popular with early settlers who often served fish boils at church and civic functions. Today, many Door County restaurants from Sturgeon Bay to Ellison Bay and Washington Island offer fish boils. In fact, you may see plumes of smoke rising up over the peninsula at regular intervals at dinner time—evidence of the famous “overboil.” Dramatic and delicious Part of the fun of a fish boil is watching the outdoor cooking process. Plan to arrive early and bring your camera. The “boil master” will be waiting by the open fire, ready to regale you with fish boil history and tell stories every step of the way. It all begins with a wood-fed blaze, over which sits a cauldron filled with salted, boiling water. First in the pot is a large stainless-steel basket filled with scrubbed baby red potatoes. A few minutes later, small sweet onions are added to the boiling water. Next a smaller basket filled with whitefish is lowered into the cauldron over the vegetable basket. The timing of all the steps is very precise. Finally, the spectators are cautioned to stand back and pull out their cameras—the overboil is imminent. The boil master steps up and flings fuel on the flames (not in the pot of fish, which is a common misconception). The fire rages up, overflowing the cauldron, washing out any cooking residue and oils from the surface of the pot. The result of the unique cooking method is flaky, perfectly-cooked whitefish—very mild and slightly salty from the cooking water—and tender vegetables with no fishy flavor. Dinner is served! l 90 | Your Key to the Door | 2015

For instance, they feature a traditional European Breakfast Plate including fruit, meat, cheese and European Breakfast Plate French bread with butter and marmalade.
