Intense. Inspiring. Awesome. The Door County Arts Scene

Can you feel it? I can. This year feels exciting. I can’t put my finger on it, exactly. But there is definitely a new vibrancy to the arts scene in Door County. Theater companies are undergoing dynamic changes, music is almost ubiquitous in the county, and visual arts are pushing boundaries with exciting new offerings and outlets. There’s something to be said for the subtle, of course. Don’t worry, we’ve got that, too. We’ve got a bit of everything— subtle, traditional, cutting edge, contemporary...it’s all alive and breathing fresh air. Regardless of your heart’s desires, 2018 is a great year to be on the Door Peninsula. They say that the hottest trend in vacations is “experience.” People are looking beyond the ordinary; they are looking to immerse themselves in an experience. There is no better way than the arts. And no better place than here. You can rub shoulders with a world-class painter, talk with actors and mingle with musicians. That’s because this peninsula attracts accomplished artists...but the small-town charm provides unequaled close-up encounters with them.

Now, that’s an experience. Best of all, it’s entirely approachable. And even family-friendly (see our cover artist story for a great example). So, if you visit a gallery, chances are, you’ll meet an artist. And maybe you’ll go home with something wonderful... something you can’t live without for one second longer. In fact, you can fill your soul in so many ways here. You can see live concerts all over the county, by some of the biggest names in their genres (and we have all genres, from folk to classical. From bluegrass to rock, jazz and even some stuff that doesn’t fit neatly into a description). And you can have your socks knocked off by theater. Intimate, professional, hilarious, profoundly moving, stunning. Some of these actors, directors, playwrights, managers and backstage specialists have seen stages in big cities—on Broadway even—but choose Door County for their work because it’s just that awesome here. Couple all that with top-shelf restaurants, unparalleled scenery and fun events, and you’ve got yourself a complete vacation experience. So welcome to 2018. Can you feel the excitement? --Heidi Hodges, Editor

Watercolor Wonders Connie Glowacki Reflects on Decades of Artistry BY HEIDI HODGES

f e a t u r e

“Day's End,” a watercolor by Connie Glowacki.

Watercolorist Connie Glowacki always remembers drawing. “My earliest memories are of drawing birds’ nests with pencil.” Her sister was also a gifted artist, said Glowacki, “but she could do it better!” Although the gift of “an insight into beauty” runs deep in her family—her great grandmother painted in oil—thinking she didn’t have as much talent as her sibling, Glowacki focused her attentions on music, both voice and piano.

When it was time to pick a career, she looked to education, and eventually earned her Master’s in education. She taught kindergarten in Janesville—a profession she dearly loved—for seven years until, in 1971, demands of family intervened. Those demands became more “demanding” when her son Matt was born in 1973 without legs. In addition to learning how to deal with Matt’s disability, they had to balance that with paying attention to their older daughter Shelly, who did not have special needs. Navigating those unfamiliar waters was a challenge. “We worked in ‘Yes mode’ with the kids,” providing experiences and opportunities, said Connie’s husband, Mike. The approach worked. Matt, a motivational speaker, has participated in the U.S. Paralympics in Atlanta and Sydney. While Glowacki never returned to the field of education, she did pursue her own education. When her kids were in second and fourth grade, Glowacki took a watercolor course. To say it set a fire under her is an understatement. In 1981, she began selling her paintings at art fairs. Art was on the forefront, and within a few years, Mike, who has a business degree from U.W. Whitewater and was teaching math and science in Janesville, left his position to focus on Glowacki's burgeoning business. “I’m lucky...not many artists have that (a partner with business experience)” said Glowacki. Early years saw Connie working art fairs and displaying in some Door County galleries like Fine Line Design in Ephraim. The Janesville natives finally decided to make the jump to a gallery of their own, and looked to Door County—a place where they had found success in sales and had made many friends. In 2008, they opened the Connie Glowacki Artist: Watercolors With Spirit gallery in the Top of the Hill Shops in Fish Creek. In Door County, she was able to combine all of her loves—art, teaching and music. She has been juried into the Peninsula Music Festival, singing in the choir, for several years. And when children come into the gallery, she’s more than happy to engage them. It’s the best of all

Watercolor artist Connie Glowacki can often be found working on new pieces at a desk in her gallery, Connie Glowacki Artist: Watercolors With Spirit in the Top of the Hill Shops in Fish Creek.

worlds for the Glowackis. At a modest desk near the entrance of the shop, Connie steadily churns out 50 to 70 watercolors a year. She works mainly from photos, but is skilled at plein air—painting on location of a scene—as well. Most of her work for sale is scenery, but people, pets and architecture figure heavily in her portfolio. And Glowacki has worked on many commissions. She has also dabbled in acrylic paint and pen and ink, but watercolor is her wheelhouse and her passion. Until recently, Glowacki, 75, taught watercolor classes at The Clearing, Crossroads at Big Creek and other venues. But health issues slowed her down a bit in 2017. Still, retirement, is not in her future. “I want to do this as long as I can,” she said. That’s probably because the gallery is more than simply a business, said Mike. “It’s not just selling art; it’s a people experience.” Indeed, the Glowackis welcome visitors, including children, to their gallery, where Mike has been known to give away Beanie Babies stuffed animals and engage with children while parents shop. And Connie has set up impromptu art projects for children. continued on page 24 >>>

Glowacki enthusiastically shows her paintings, including a few stunning abstracts. One, a recent work, is a playful reflection of light on a hubcap—a watercolor she did from a photo she took. It is a metallic reflection. But the picture is graceful, like a flower, she points out. “It’s a male celebration,” she said, clearly enjoying the painting. She shows some albums of work she’s done, including the photos she works from next to the watercolor she created. In every case, the art is profoundly more striking than the snapshot photograph. She listens appreciatively, as her mastery of light and form are pointed out. “Thank you!” she exclaims, with a grateful tone of validation. Glowacki moves from one subject to the next with an infectious sense of enthusiasm, optimism and gratitude—a force of energy, even with an ailing back. While the interview is, of course, focused on her, she listens intently and then asks questions about the interviewer. And before the morning session is complete, she has gifted a sharpened artist pencil, with encouragement to use. And the reporter leaves with the promise to use it—and return with the results.

Charcoal was first introduced in early cave paintings. In fact, purists create their own charcoal in much the same way the caveman did, by charring wood. Saturday, September 29 is a member paint-out and sale. OCTOBER 6: Iron Pour Benefit. For a small contribution, participants of all ages

All are invited to witness the fiery pour, listen to live music and enjoy seasonal refreshments. 4-8 p.m. OCTOBER 26-DECEMBER 29: Awakening the Art of Day of the Dead. Two-and three-dimensional works celebrate Dia de los Muertos, a traditional Mexican and Latin American holiday to honor the lives of deceased family members. Among the subject matter is skulls, clothed skeletons and monarch butterflies. Far from holiday doom and gloom, the deceased are awakened from their eternal sleep to share lively celebrations with their loved ones.

MEADOWS ART GALLERY: Located in the front hall of the Meadows apartments at Good Samaritan Scandia Village in Sister Bay, the gallery is the brainchild of Donna Denardo, senior living manager, and Tom Seagard, a lifelong artist who has owned the Mill Road Gallery in Sister Bay with his wife and fellow artist Brigitte Kozma, since 1971. No Shortage of Ideas

Rural Gallery Aims to Share Community BY HEIDI HODGES

There is a “sense of community within a community” among Door county galleries. “We are all ambassadors,” said Idea Gallery owner Dan Cross.

One of the newest galleries on the scene, the Idea Gallery opened in May 2017 to rave reviews and plenty of local support. Cross is quick to point out that it is through the cooperation of other gallery owners that he is becoming known. And, conversely, he directs customers to galleries throughout the county. “It’s not competitive—we are all very cooperative,” he said. Cross was familiar with several county galleries before he set up shop

Ideas Galler y continued from 57

in May. As a graphic designer, he had worked for others helping with marketing and ad design. Opening a gallery of his own was a logical step. “It’s been very fulfilling. And more than I could have imagined.” Located off the beaten path at 6551 County Road T between Jacksonport and Egg Harbor, the gallery has found its niche with contemporary art, with plenty of traditional mixed in. People enter the gallery, located in the rural interior of Door County and say, “Wow! This is really cool!” In fact, Cross said, one of his favorite compliments was when someone said, “This reminds me of my favorite gallery in New York City.”

Inside, the modest-sized gallery is bright, with interesting touches, like odd bits of tin on the aged hardwood floor, covering scattered holes. The metal comes from antique cans scavenged from farmers’ garbage piles in the county, Cross explained. Pounded flat, they are whimsical accouterments within the gallery—a little taste of “interesting” beyond the art installation. Within the facility, Cross has his own studio space and office. He trained as a ceramicist and painter, receiving a degree in teaching from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in 1982. He currently works in mixed media and digital painting. Cross’s wife, Diane, is a teacher in Green Bay. The couple lives in Door County, not far from the gallery. They have two grown children, a son who works as an architect and a daughter who works in art and design. The gallery is open year-round. “I’m here because I’m using my studio,” he explained. So, the plans are to include pop up shows in winter. And he’s gearing up for a big summer season in 2018, with new ideas, more opportunities for encounters with artists and festive show openings.

Diane and Dan Cross, Idea Gallery owners

The Idea Gallery’s building has had a long history, including serving as a grocery store in the 1950s and 1960s. “It was moved here in the early ’50s by horse-drawn sleigh in the winter,” Cross explained. “I keep hearing from people about the history of the building.”

One of the nicest aspects of having the gallery is that it provides Cross with an avenue to use his degree in education. “When aspiring artists come in, I can talk with them about the arts and encourage them,” he explained. And beyond that, he hopes to open the world of the arts to younger students.
