G U I D E 2011 - ISSUE 5 HOW TO USE THE GUIDE This year’s guide is divided into five sections. Each ad, descriptive listing, and map is color coded to correspond to its section. Red includes the peninsula’s southern communities and Sturgeon Bay. Green includes Carlsville, Jacksonport, Egg Harbor, Baileys Harbor & Juddville. Orange includes Fish Creek & Ephraim. Blue includes Sister Bay.Violet includes Rowleys Bay & North. “Pages” 1-145: In this guide, you’ll see what appear to be page numbers between 1 and 145. While they act and flow like page numbers, many are also advertisers’ “locator numbers” to help you find the location on the map listed next to the number. 200 and above: The maps, however, also contain “locator numbers” 200 and above. Each of these numbers relates to another location on the Door Peninsula. Index - Artists: In the alphabetical index at the back of the guide, you’ll find a comprehensive list of artists cross-referenced to locations where their work can be seen. What follows the artist’s name is a “locator number.” A number 145 or below identifies the “page” of an ad either of the artist’s work or the location where the art work can be seen, and the map for that location. If that number is 200 or higher, however, you must look at the referenced map to find the location. For example: • 11 refers to “page” 11 • 235 refers to the dot # 235 on green map A.

As is reflected in this guide, Door
County’s town and village roads are lined with art galleries and working studios, giving residents and visitors countless opportunities to explore the peninsula’s contemporary arts scene. The works found there not only reflect the Peninsula’s immense impact on the artist, but also underscores the core of what makes it such an attraction. The many private galleries and studios in this guide are only a part of the majestic canvas that reflects the Peninsula’s beauty. There are also the free public galleries, comprising a Sturgeon Bay art museum, an Ephraim arts center and four art galleries scattered from Sturgeon Bay in the south to Sister Bay in the north. The 2011 schedule is dotted with highlights, many of which have been set and are included in this guide’s calendar of events. Some of those highlights included on that list are The Peninsula School of Art renowned Plein Air Festival as well as the venerable Miller Art Museum in Sturgeon Bay and the Hardy Gallery in Ephraim which each present top-quality Juried Exhibitions each year. The esteemed Birch Creek Music Performance Center is more than just music. It opened its own free public gallery three years ago. The Melzer Gallery is located in the new rehearsal facility at Birch Creek. On the same note, the Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek offers more than music and theater. It houses The Link Gallery.
Melzer Gallery
Birch Creek’s Melzer Gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily during the concert season, with extended hours on concert evenings. During the offseason, visitors must call ahead to arrange a tour. Also, Birch Creek requests that visitors call ahead if they would like to see the photographs hanging in the barn halls. Birch Creek is located three miles east of Egg Harbor on County Road E.
Corner Gallery
The Corner Gallery, located on the first floor of Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay, features the work of one local artist per month throughout the year.
The Hardy
The Hardy is located at Ephraim’s Anderson Dock, a national historic landmark that celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2008. The art center, now in
public galleries
its 49th season, offers art exhibitions, special events and educational outreach programs. It’s open from May to October.
Guenzel Gallery
Housed in a round barn on the Peninsula School of Art’s Fish Creek campus, the Guenzel Gallery is designed to exhibit local, regional and national artists, educate audiences, encourage collaboration between artistic disciplines and link with the school’s programs. The gallery celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2009 and is open year-round.
Link Gallery
The Link Gallery, which literally links Gibraltar Schools with the Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek, was created to accommodate exhibits that promote understanding and explore ideas in the humanities, the creative arts, history and the sciences. It is open year-round.
Miller Art Museum
The Miller Art Museum, given to Door County by Ruth and Gerhard Miller in 1975, is located within the Door County Main Library in Sturgeon Bay. It features changing exhibitions as well as works from the permanent collection, including the late Gerhard Miller’s watercolor and egg tempera paintings. The Miller is open year-round.
Unitarian Universalist Gallery
The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Door County, located in Ephraim, has a public art gallery with year-round monthly art exhibitions featuring the work of regional artists in all media. The UU Gallery also has an impressive permanent collection that includes the work of Angela Lensch and Louis Smolak. The visitor to
Door County wouldn’t leave without at visit to at least one state park or shopping its many boutiques and galleries. The same could be said for its remarkable array of performing arts opportunities.
Theatre
Situated on a spectacular piece of waterfront property on Peninsula Players Road between Fish Creek and Egg Harbor, the Peninsula Players is in its 76th season. A new stunning stage house is in keeping with the theater’s open-air pavilion feel for which it is famous. The season begins in mid-June and extends into October and consists of five plays. For more information, call 920-868-3287 or visit www.peninsulaplayers.com. Since 1990, American Folklore Theatre has set its stage deep in the woods in Peninsula State Park. AFT’s stage is surrounded by tall trees and covered with nothing but a star-lit sky. It’s classic Door County and the shows normally have a strong northern Wisconsin flavor. The season runs midJune through August followed by an indoor fall offering. Tickets are sold one hour prior to show time or in advance by calling 920-854-6117. A state park
sticker is not required to see the show. Visit www. folkloretheatre.com for information on shows. Door Shakespeare has used Door County’s stunning natural qualities as a backdrop for its offerings since its debut in 1999. Performances are held in the garden at Bjorklunden Estate, located on the shores of Lake Michigan south of Baileys Harbor. Door Shakespeare’s season runs from mid-July through much of August. For information, call 920-839-1500 or visit www.doorshakespeare.com.
MUSIC
The Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek continues its 20-year tradition of bringing bigname entertainment to the Peninsula. In past years, such legendary performers like Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Bob Newhart, Willie Nelson and many more have graced the Auditorium’s stage. Contact the Auditorium box office at 920-868-2728 or go online at www.dcauditorium.com. The Peninsula Music Festival is a Door County tradition spanning 56 years. Traditionally nine concerts in length, the season spans the first three weeks of August and features some of the finest performers in the classical music

has attracted tourists since the Victorian era, its reputation as a haven for artists didn’t take shape until the mid-20th century. Because the arts community these talented masters created is still relatively young, those who live, play and work in Door County have had priceless opportunities to experience local art history at a personal level — visiting the working studios, seeing new pieces take shape and becoming acquainted with the artists themselves. But time passes, and in 2010 Door County lost three of its longtime masters: Robert Ekholm, 84, on February 23; Richard Mueller, 69, on July 3; and Louis Smolak, 101, on September 5.

A graduate of New Trier High School in Evanston, Illinois, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Robert Ekholm spent a quarter-century of his life in the classroom. He taught at Wisconsin’s Neenah High School for 25 years and was a John Hay Fellow at Yale University. But a fulltime career as an artist ultimately beckoned, and he relocated to Door County. Ekholm exhibited his work here since the 1980s, working from the Fish Creek studio he shared with his wife, fellow oil painter Judi Ekholm. His paintings reflect a deep passion for light, color, texture, composi-

tion and design — as well as for two special regions of North America. “For me, Door County and areas of California have always been magical places that live in my heart and inspire my paintings, he observed to this writer in a 2006 interview. “The Door Peninsula has an abundance of ever-changing natural beauty. The light here is unique and probably is affected by the amount of water that surrounds its [hundreds of ] miles of shoreline. Many of Ekholm’s paintings focused on Door County’s water views. Peninsula State Park was within easy biking distance of his studio, and he commented, “There I have found the sparkling light I can only hope to capture. He said his goal was to capture the essence of his feeling for a place, and that inspiration would only come if he could truly feel its energy. California remained what he called his “escape place, and his feelings for the land were revealed in paintings such as “I Heard It on the Grapevine, which depicts Sterling Vineyard in California’s Napa Valley. Exhibits of Ekholm’s work included shows at Yale University and the University of Wisconsin. His paintings are collected nationally and internationally, and his work is part of the Smithsonian Institution’s permanent collection. Richard Mueller was born and raised in Plymouth, Wisconsin. Although he took art classes during his school days, he pursued a career as a newspaper advertising salesman. Then, in 1970, everything changed with the completion and sale of his first coloredpencil drawing. “In the 1970s, he decided to ‘quit working for a living!’ his wife, BJ, recalled with a chuckle. “He wanted to pursue art full time.

The Muellers had been visiting Door County for years, and in 1988, they became permanent residents. In Lorraine Mengert’s now out-of-print book “Door County’s Art History,” Richard Mueller noted, “Our principal reason for the move was a change in lifestyle. We didn’t wish to look back 20 years later and say ‘we could have.’ Instead, we wanted to take advantage of what we felt was meant to be.’” The Muellers opened their first gallery in Baileys Harbor and then moved into a building next door to the Jack Anderson Gallery in Sister Bay. They would remain there for 17 years, until the Andersons sold the property. From there, they moved into Egg Harbor’s Main Street Shops. The gallery closed in the middle of its 23rd season, when Mueller passed away. The artist preferred to work in colored pencil, incorporating 12 to 20 different colors with a layering technique of up to 24 layers to get the exact hues he wanted. His favorite subjects were birds, although BJ noted he also had a lot of fun with fruits and vegetables; today his work is found in public and private collections throughout the United States and in Europe.

They moved to Sister Bay in the mid-20th century, seeking the Door Peninsula’s open spaces and the opportunity to have a studio. He continued to work in a variety of mediums, including Honduran mahogany, bronze and stone. Creation, for Smolak, was impulsive. And he continued to create well into his golden years. “Art just comes out, like breathing,” he said at age 97. “I’ve never pinned down inspiration, [and] I don’t try to intellectualize what motivates me. It just happens.” Lorraine Mengert observed that the growth of the local arts community continues at an astonishingly rapid pace. “[Artists] continue to come,” she wrote. “Galleries pop up with each new season, each introducing the work of artists not yet familiar to the county. We celebrate the arts.” We do, indeed. And we celebrate those who have contributed so much of themselves to the peninsula’s unique artistic journey. Thank you, Robert Ekholm, Richard Mueller and Louis Smolak. Your names are forever linked with Door County.

Fall Reflections - Giverny by Peter Ellensworth
Louis Smolak
“Executed in colored pencil, which one could say is a contemporary version of egg tempera painting, Richard’s work has the studied and sacred quality of 13th and 14th century Byzantine art,” said acclaimed Door County artist Craig Blietz. “Richard combined the documentary quality of Audubon with the concern for form and materiality. The key of Richard’s work is clearly the playful side of the artist making its way into these sincere and solemn works of art.” “He loved what he was doing,” BJ Mueller said. “He loved his art, and he loved sharing it with people. He was an artist through and through — he had a happy life.” Born in Dubashnik, Belorussia, in 1909, Louis Smolak arrived in the United States at age 4. He grew up in Chicago, attended Lane High School and studied art at the celebrated School of the Art Institute of Chicago; he took master classes for two years with Ukrainian avant-garde artist Alexander Archipenko, a contemporary and friend to Pablo Picasso. Given the hardships of the Great Depression, Smolak decided to earn an art education degree at Illinois State University. He supported himself through boxing and the machine trade, and in the late 1930s, he took part in the Spanish Civil War, serving with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. But his love of art was always there. He commented in a 2007 interview that he started carving the first time he picked up a pen knife and a piece of wood, and he also was constantly drawing and sketching. Those sketches and early woodcarvings ultimately led to the bronze masterpieces for which he became famous. Smolak married his wife, Edie, in 1943.

a life lived to the fullest
Bob Thompson
passed away June 15, 2010 – the opening night of Peninsula Players 75th season and the day of his 64th wedding anniversary. He left behind an amazing professional legacy – acting from the Great Depression until the 21st century, decades of well-respected and honored work in Chicago, stints on Broadway and, of course, his years as the face and voice of Peninsula Players. Beyond the footlights, however, was a dedicated family man, a down-to-Earth lover of the outdoors and travel; a World War II veteran and a lifelong churchgoer. “A lot of people in the arts are there for the rush, the excitement and the accolades,” says son Don Thompson. “My dad was there for the work. He loved the art of acting, directing and being involved in the production. I remember when he was in ‘On Golden Pond’ in Michigan. He would walk out through the lobby completely unnoticed. He just wanted to get home and eat a liverwurst sandwich.” Raised in Chicago, Thompson attended the Goodman School as a teenager, which first brought him to Door County and Peninsula Players in 1938. He spent two summers in the county, loved it, but after graduation decided to try his hand at New York. It didn’t go well – he struggled for more than a year before being drafted. After World War II, Thompson returned to Chicago, and restarted his career, both as a teacher and actor. He also married his wife, Margaret, and the two started a family. As his children recollect, Thompson was
GALLERY & SCULPTURE GARDEN as active in their lives as his schedule – which included teaching and performing – would allow. This included being involved in scouting (Bob had been an Eagle Scout) and a strong interest in their futures. Don Thompson’s desire to become a professional musician did cause friction in the family. They came to an agreement – Don would go to college and get a degree and after that, make his decision about his career. “I got my degree and said that now I’m going to start gigging. He said that a deal’s a deal and that we had better find a real professional instrument to play. We found a luthier and commissioned a guitar that is like a Stradivarius. He tried to protect me, but when I made my decision he turned around and bought me this phenomenal instrument as a graduation present.” A s f a r a s Pe n i n s u l a P l a y e r s w e n t , Thompson returned to Door County for a few seasons in the middle 1950s and then, in his early 60s, became a permanent fixture in the 1970s, acting in dozens of roles over the

next three decades. The years of experience and a lifelong commitment to hard work made his performances one of the company’s biggest attractions, whether cast in a Ray Cooney farce, an intense drama or masquerading as Edwina Mealing to play Lady Bracknell in ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’. Thompson also served as a mentor for generations of performers, including a number of Peninsula Players regulars. Artistic Director Greg Vinkler first worked with Thompson in 1980 on ‘Angel Street’ in Chicago. “In Japan, some artists are considered national treasures. Bob was one of those. He was absolutely unique. He just worked magic on stage. That the rest of the country did not know about him did not lessen his star. It’s just sad that more people didn’t know him or his work.” As an actor, Thompson was always prepared. “Up until the last show he did (‘A Man for All Seasons’, in 2003), he always came in the first day of rehearsal knowing all of his lines. He always came completely prepared.” As a friend, Thompson also had a profound influence. “He was always supportive of me and my work,” Vinkler says. “It was also fun to be with him, as he had a long history with theater and with life.” Thompson was a presence at Players and Door County – he and Margaret moved to Sister Bay full time in 2002 – until the very end, always a friendly figure at opening night or holding court at the Door County Bakery, owned by Don. Don Thompson probably summed it up best: “He lived his life by the family crest, ‘to be, rather than to seem’.”

“Foggy Wednesday at Gills
Rock” is the title of artwork on the cover of the 2011 Door Peninsula Arts Guide. Many of the artists whose work grace the cover of such publications are often referred to as “distinguished.” Most are certainly worthy of such an attribute, but few are more deserving than this year’s cover artist Charles “Chick” Peterson. Arguably, the long-time Ephraim resident may be Door County’s best known and collected artist in the nation, a designation the modest Peterson would prefer to downplay. But one cannot overlook the immense popularity of his remarkable Memories Collection works with their ghostly images or the acclaim he’s received for his exquisitely detailed maritime-related pieces. The cover piece is just such an example of
Peterson’s passion for everything nautical. And that passion especially extends to the Door Peninsula, which has served as the inspiration for so many of his creations. “Foggy Wednesday at Gills Rock” is a relatively new work, one of seven pieces in a series Peterson has dedicated to life in Door County. Besides capturing a classic setting that Peterson feels is “the essence” of the Peninsula, he said the commercial fishing element is meant to capture a way of life that seems to be slowly fading from the landscape. Much of Peterson’s work is woven in history. “It’s always been interesting to me,” he said. “Marine history is probably my favorite area. Anything to do with water and boats and men working is of interest to me.” It has garnered him awards from Mystic Seaport’s Mystic Maritime Museum Gallery

as well as the prestigious title as Modern Marine Master. But even Peterson admits that although his maritime pieces have garnered international awards, it has been overshadowed by a remarkable technique that blended a nostalgic ghostly element into modernday settings. Sales from his Memories Collection made Peterson one of the most popular artists in America and true to form its ori-
gins were inspired by Door County and ships. “It was amazing. I began with that ghostly imagery about 1973. It’s a ruined schooner on shore. I was intrigued by the tragedy of so many ships, hundreds of them lying on the bottom around us here in Door County, the affect it had on the men who survived and didn’t survive,” said Peterson. “I thought about the captain of that ship and his spirit hovering around it. So I did it.” Dozens of other works have followed and Peterson feels the popularity of each doesn’t entirely rest in the quality of the art but the memories those ghosts conjure up in the eye of the beholder. Originally intent on following the other men in the family into engineering, Peterson didn’t take an art class in high school. It was actually after graduation while he waited for enlistment in the U.S. Navy near the end of World War II that he took up the brush through an arrangement his

mother made with the high school art teacher. “When I was in the Navy I was constantly drawing,” said the Elgin, Ill., native. “I had sailed in high school, so I was enthusiastic about the maritime life. I sold a drawing of our LST to a shipmate for $5. I heard the next day that he sold it to the executive officer for $20. I may be stupid, but I’m not an idiot. I could see there was an opportunity in art; that made me think a little more about art as an interest.” Peterson went to train at the American Academy of Art in

Chicago and eventually went to work for Leo Burnett, one of the country’s most prominent advertising agencies, as well as Hart, Schaffner & Marx. It was there that Peterson found a path to his career in teaching. An old friend had accepted a job to teach at Marietta College in Ohio and invited Peterson to stay with his family while he complete an undergraduate degree. A master’s degree would follow at Ohio University on a road that would take him back to Marietta where he taught and eventually became head of the art department. Although he first came to Door County in 1947 on a casual trip with friends he didn’t develop a serious relationship with the Peninsula until after meeting his future wife Sue. “I was finishing up post-graduate at (UW) Madison in 1956. After Sue and I met, I offered her a ride home at the end of the semester and took her to Port Washington,” he remembers. “It turned out her parents weren’t home. They were here in Ephraim on their boat at Anderson Dock. So to deliver her to her parents I came up here again and fell in love with the place immediately.” Some of that love is clearly reflected on the cover. “I’ve had wonderfully good luck,” said the 83-year-old Peterson. “I’m more and more grateful that I’ve had the necessity to paint and the decent health with which to pursue it.”

“Pages” 1-145
In this guide, you’ll see what appear to be page numbers between 1 and 145. While they act and flow like page numbers, many are also advertisers’ “locator numbers” to help you find the location on the map listed next to the number.
200 and above
The maps, however, also contain “locator numbers” 200 and above. Each of these numbers relates to another location on the Door Peninsula.
Index - Artists
In this alphabetical guide, you’ll find a comprehensive list of artists cross-referenced to locations where their work can be seen. What follows the artist’s name is a “locator number.” A number 145 or below identifies the “page” of an ad either of the artist’s work or the location where the art work can be seen, and the map for that location. If that number is 200 or higher, however, you must look at the referenced map to find the location.
