This year’s guide is divided into five sections. Each ad, descriptive listing, and map is color coded to correspond to its section. Red includes the peninsula’s southern communities and Sturgeon Bay. Green includes Carlsville, Jacksonport, Egg Harbor, Baileys Harbor & Juddville. Orange includes Fish Creek & Ephraim. Blue includes Sister Bay. Purple includes Ellison Bay & North. “Pages” 1-142: In this guide, you’ll see what appear to be page numbers between 1 and 142. While they act and flow like page numbers, many are also advertisers’ “locator numbers” to help you find the location on the map listed next to the number. 200 and above: The maps, however, also contain “locator numbers” 200 and above. Each of these numbers relates to another location on the Door Peninsula. Index - Artists: In the alphabetical index at the back of the guide, you’ll find a comprehensive list of artists cross-referenced to locations where their work can be seen. What follows the artist’s name is a “locator number.” A number 142 or below identifies the “page” of an ad either of the artist’s work or the location where the art work can be seen, and the map for that location. If that number is 200 or higher, however, you must look at the referenced map to find the location. For example: • 11 refers to “page” 11 • 235 refers to the dot # 235 on green map A

public galleries
New gallery adds to an already impressive public exhibition schedule As many art enthusiasts already
know, Door County is home to several distinctive public art galleries, each expertly designed and curated to provide a world-class experience for collectors, vacationers, community members and the artists themselves. For the 2013 season, the peninsula has a new public arts venue that is already creating quite a bit of buzz throughout northeast Wisconsin: the Meadows Art Gallery. The new gallery, located in the front hall of the Meadows apartments at Good Samaritan Scandia Village in Sister Bay, is the brainchild of Donna Denardo, senior living manager, and Tom Seagard, a lifelong artist who has owned the Mill Road Gallery in Sister Bay with his wife, fellow artist Brigitte Kozma, since 1971. Together, Denardo and Seagard wanted to give Door County’s emerging and impact artists an opportunity to gain exposure and experience. At the Meadows Art Gallery, artists have access to more than a quality exhibition venue. They also have access to six accomplished artists who have volunteered to share their knowledge and skills: Ernest Beutel, mixed media/painting/drawing, Sturgeon Bay; Jan Comstock, oil painting, Baileys Harbor; Marcia Nickols, mixed media/paintings/constructions, Ephraim; Bren Sibilsky, sculpture, Algoma; Tom Seagard, mixed media/painting/drawing, Sister Bay; and Kerry Vavra, watercolor painting, Sturgeon Bay. Seagard and Vavra are serving as facilitators. Denardo and Assistant Senior Living Manager Judith Selier round out the committee, with Kozma and Kathie Vavra, jewelry artist and Kerry Vavra’s wife, serving as de facto committee members. This energetic group is dedicated to bringing new horizons and interests to the vibrant Scandia Village and to fostering creative growth within the Door County art community. The 2013 exhibition calendar at the Meadows Art Gallery: April: Kites May: Poetry; Memorial Donated Art
June: Quilts; Photography July: Mona Barden, colored pencil/mixed media, and Barb Kenyon, mixed media. Opening reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 11. August: Penny Pfister, oils/watercolors, and Barb Sweeney, watercolors. Opening reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8. September: Dorothy McDowell, painting, and Madonna Siles, oil/pastel/acrylic. Opening reception tentatively scheduled from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8. October: Kim Jacobs, mixed media, and Bethany Kirwen, mixed media. Opening reception tentatively scheduled from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4. November: “Pioneer Show,” an invitational exhibition that incorporates the work of artists who were involved in the Meadows Art Gallery’s first year. December: Kathy Vavra, jewelry, and Kerry Vavra, watercolors. During the 2013 season, the rest of Door County’s public galleries also are showcasing a broad range of exhibitions. Many also are featuring a series of special events from gallery talks and receptions to signature fundraisers and the 2013 Door County Plein Air Festival. Mark your calendars and get ready for a thrilling artistic journey in one of North America’s top vacation destinations!
Door Peninsula Winery Art Gallery: Door County’s well-known
Door Peninsula Winery has opened a new public art gallery at its Carlsville facility. In partnership with Allin Walker, owner/ manager of the acclaimed Woodwalk Gallery in Egg Harbor, the winery will host four exhibitions this year. All the work is available for purchase.

Melzer Gallery: In 2008, the Birch Creek Music Performance Center opened this public gallery on its property three miles east of Egg Harbor on County Highway E. It originally showcased “Birch Creek through Lens and Brush,” an exploration of the music center as a source of inspiration for visual artists. It evolved into “Birch Creek Associates - Celebrating 20 Years,” which featured photography documenting the work and successes of Birch Creek’s volunteer corps. This year, the Melzer Gallery continues to display photographs that chronicle the organization’s history and shine a spotlight on its faculty, students and visiting notables such as Woody Herman and Libby Larsen. While touring, peruse the back hallways of the 100-year-old Dutton concert barn, which feature photographs that illustrate the ongoing history of Birch Creek. plein air festival
Plein Air Festival emphasizes peninsula’s appeal to artists
“A Brush with Painting Greatness for All” is the descriptive title for the 2013 Door County Plein Air Festival. It is certainly that, because 40 Plein Air masters from the United States and beyond have been invited for the event to be held July 22–27. The festival is presented by the Peninsula School of Art in Fish Creek and will provide a full line-up of events for painting enthusiasts of all ages, as well as for collectors. Both will have the opportunity to witness and participate in the art of painting out of doors. Free and ticketed events encourage attendees to interact with the artists as they paint works from start-to-finish throughout the Door County landscape. Paintings are typically completed within two hours due to changes in sunlight on a scene. on Tuesday and a sunset paint-out in Sister Bay on Wednesday. On Saturday, July 27, the public will have the opportunity to attend the Quick Paint and live auction of featured artists’ works at noon in Fish Creek’s Clark Park. The festival exhibition is also open to the public Saturday, with an “Open Door Celebration” reception in the evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Awards will be announced at that time. The exhibition and purchase of festival works runs through mid-August. Exclusive ticketed events with the artists include: the “Welcome Dinner” with live music on Monday at the Art School; “Masters and Music,” featuring live music with light gourmet fare, beer and wine, on Wednesday evening in Sister Bay; and on Friday, the “Collector’s Preview” and “Gala Auction” at the school, which offer the first right of purchase of the festival paintings. A live jazz quartet will perform during these events, which include gourmet appetizers and champagne, and dinner, respectively. On Saturday, for a fee of $30, any artist of painting media may participate in the public “Dockside Paint Out” in Fish Creek’s Clark Park, from 9 to 11 a.m. The first-place award winner of this event receives an invitation to be a featured artist in the 2014 Festival. Kids can also take part in the festivities in the park that morning. For $5, they can have the experience of painting near both featured and “Dockside Paint Out” artists, with art supplies provided by Peninsula School of Art. The Door County Plein Air Festival is Peninsula School of Art’s main annual fundraising event. The purchase of Festival paintings benefits the non-profit school’s art education programs. Mill Road Gallery
Sister Bay couple continues to relish a lifetime in art For decades, artists have converged on Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula, seeking to build a new life in a place of astounding natural beauty and tightly knit communities, a place offering endless sources of inspiration while also providing the means to make a living through creative pursuits.
Tom Seagard and Brigitte Kozma were among these pioneers, and 43 years after they founded Sister Bay’s renowned Mill Road Gallery, they continue to produce new, exciting work – and have fun while doing it. “We’ve been married and in business together for more than 40 years, and it’s still so interesting,” Kozma said with a laugh. “I think it’s because we’re each our own person.” “It’s been 45 years since I found the

person I wanted to spend the rest of my life with,” Seagard interjected, “but you need to protect your ego, drive and identity as an artist. You can’t lose who you are.” “We give each other the room to do what we need to do,” Kozma agreed. The road to Door County was a winding one. Born in Germany, Kozma arrived in the United States in 1951 with her family. They were bound for Wisconsin, where sponsors had arranged for her father to work. Her dad, she said, had an artistic side. “That must be where I got it from,” she mused. “I was an only child, and I loved drawing and doodling ... I entertained myself.” After attending public high school in Waukesha, Kozma attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a major in painting. During her freshman year, she met fellow painter Tom Seagard. Born in Jamestown, N.Y, Seagard moved around as a child due to his father’s work in sales. He spent his teen years in Muskego, Wis., and although he earned a scholarship
to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he decided to turn it down. “The faculty at UWM was world class,” he explained. “John Earnest, in particular — he gave me everything. The bus pulled in, and I got on.” That bus was a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program with a double major in painting and graphic art. Seagard said he started to focus on the graphics side, recognizing that it might prove to be the safer route for employment after graduation. “There were two directions for an art career,” he explained. “Commercial art or fine art. Commercial art didn’t really appeal to me, but I decided to start working toward being a commercial printer.” Then came a life-changing moment. He agreed to help with a printing class and Kozma was in that class. “I saw the most beautiful woman, drawing on a litho stone,” he recalled. “We went out for coffee. I found a mate for life, and I discovered that I loved teaching.” Like commercial art, teaching offered a clearly defined career path for young artists. Kozma also decided to go that route, earning her teaching certificate while at UWM. “Even in grade school, I knew I wanted to be an artist,” she said, “but commercial art seemed to be the only way to make a living. At that time, I didn’t see good prospects for me as a woman, so I went into teaching.” Kozma only taught for three years. She said her time in the classroom taught her something valuable about herself: She wanted to make art, not teach it. Seagard, on the other hand, taught at the college level for two years and then spent the next 26 years in junior high classrooms. “Teaching has been a wonderful addition to my fine art, especially in junior high school, which most people would never say,” he commented with a chuckle. “To me, art and teaching are blended.” Indeed. Even as Seagard demonstrated his dedication in the classroom, his fine art career continued to grow and flourish. So did Kozma’s, and the key to their artistic futures proved to be a family cottage in Door County.

Seagard had been exhibiting his work in prominent Milwaukee and Chicago galleries since he was just 19 years old, and Kozma had been exhibiting her work since 1968. By 1970, however, Kozma had left teaching, and both artists were disenchanted with the gallery scene. They wanted their own gallery space and working studio. They turned northward. “Tom’s parents had a cottage in Door County,” Kozma explained. “We came up while we were in college, and we had our honeymoon there. That sold us on Door County.” “We saw this derelict building on a walk from my parents’ place, and we bought it,” Seagard remembered. “Then we thought, ‘Now what do we do?’” Among their early acquaintances were Door County masters Gerhard C.F. Miller and Jim Ingwersen. Both shared their time, energy and knowledge with the newcomers, who opened the Mill Road Gallery in Sister Bay in 1971. “There were giant men and women up here,” Seagard said simply. “They showed us how to do things, and they made me aware of payback . . . the importance of giving back to this art community.” For nine years, Seagard and Kozma split their time between Sister Bay and Appleton, where Seagard was teaching. When she wasn’t producing her art, Kozma did the books and managed the gallery. “I didn’t need what Tom needed,” Kozma said. “I saved myself from a career that wouldn’t have been good for me.” The artists eventually wearied of “the weekend skirmish” and moved to Sister Bay full-time in 1980. They made a comfortable home above the gallery, which they now share with a much-loved rescued greyhound named Jenni. And 43 years after they opened the Mill Road Gallery’s doors, they’re still making art and operating the gallery. They also volunteer at Good Samaritan Scandia Village, where they’re assisting with the new Meadows Art Gallery for emerging/impact artists, and they’re constantly exploring new ways of sharing their discoveries with the world. Both have work in private and corporate collections around the United States and in Europe.

Seagard focuses on mixed media, ranging from traditional art materials to spray enamels, industrial paints, coffee and food coloring. Kozma works in oil paint, pastel and black-and-white crayon. Both artists revel in their field work, which has taken them from Door County to Key West, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. “This is fun, this is life!” Seagard enthuses. “I’m sharing things that blow me away, that set my hair on fire. Making art, for me, is like breathing. It’s an expression of things I regard as vital. There’s nothing lightweight about art. It’s supposed to impact you and make you grow — just like eating healthy meals and getting enough sleep.” Seagard is excited about his new experimentation with media. His recent piece depicting Ephraim’s historic firehouse blends coffee, watercolors and tempera. Both artists are eagerly anticipating new work inspired by a series of photographs they took of Cuban exiles in Key West. And then there’s the
old switch engine in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. “If we had five lifetimes, it wouldn’t be enough time,” Kozma marvels. “I’m going to have to come back!” It’s clear that Seagard and Kozma are reveling in their creative lives, and they invite the public to come share art and conversation at Mill Road Gallery. “We have a huge opening every May, and the show lasts until November,” Seagard joked. “Seriously, come share this stuff with us. We’re here, we’re working and we have new stuff all the time. Come celebrate life with us.”

American Folklore Theatre. Photo by Len Villano
Art comes in various forms, and while this guide reflects the stunning collection of galleries open to the public, performing arts is also a must-do on any visitor’s vacation plans. THEATER Situated on a spectacular piece of waterfront property on Peninsula Players Road between Fish Creek and Egg Harbor, the Peninsula Players is in its 78th season. A new stunning stage house is in keeping with the theater’s open-air pavilion feel for which it is famous. The season, consisting of five plays, begins in mid-June and will extend to Oct. 20. For more information, call (920) 868-3287 or visit www.peninsulaplayers.com. Since 1990, American Folklore Theatre has set its stage deep in the woods in Peninsula State Park. AFT’s stage is surrounded by tall trees and covered with nothing but a star-lit sky. It’s classic Door County, and the shows normally have a strong northern Wisconsin flavor. The season runs mid-June through August, followed by an indoor fall offering. Tickets are sold one hour prior to show time or in advance by calling (920) 854-6117. In 2013, “Windjammers” makes its AFT debut in 2013, while “Loose Lips Sink Ships” and “Muskie Love” return to the stage. “Victory Garden” returns in the fall
after a highly successful debut last summer. A state park sticker is not required to see the show. Visit www.folkloretheatre.com for information on shows. Door Shakespeare has used Door County’s stunning natural qualities as a backdrop for its offerings since its debut in 1999. Performances are held in the garden at Bjorklunden Estate, located on the shores of Lake Michigan south of Baileys Harbor. Door Shakespeare’s season runs from midJuly through much of August and this year features “Macbeth” and “Love’s Labours Lost.” For information, call (920) 839-1500 or visit www.doorshakespeare.com. Sturgeon Bay’s Third Avenue Playhouse, located in the former Donna movie theater in downtown Sturgeon Bay, has established itself as a promoter of theater and music at all talent levels. Its new in-house theater company has blossomed, offering productions throughout the year. For additional information, call (920) 743-1760 or visit www.thirdavenueplayhouse.com.
MUSIC The Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek continues its 20-year tradition of bringing big-name entertainment to the Peninsula. In past years, such as legendary performers like Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Bob Newhart, Willie Nelson and many more have graced the Auditorium’s stage. Call the Auditorium box office at (920) 868-2728 or go online at www. dcauditorium.com. The Peninsula Music Festival is a Door County tradition spanning 56 years.

Index - Artists: In this alphabetical guide, you’ll find a comprehensive list of artists cross-referenced to locations where their
work can be seen. What follows the artist’s name is a “locator number.” A number 142 or below identifies the “page” of an ad either of the artist’s work or the location where the art work can be seen, and the map for that location.
