NEW-VEHICLE PREVIEW GUIDE 2012

Durango

DODGE

Overall: Seven-seat Dodge Durango is what the old Jeep Commander should have been; spacious, efficient and great off the beaten path. Drivetrain: A 290-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 is the base engine, while a 360-horsepower 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8 is the obvious choice for developing maximum thrust.

■ One of the few nearly-new vehicles in Dodge’s stable, the big “D” has been designed off the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s unitized (frameless) platform. Also highly regarded is the 290-horsepower V6 (Chrysler’s Base price (incl. destination): $29,700 newest powerplant effort) as well as the optional Type: Four-door sport utility vehicle 360-horsepower 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8. And since the same designers who penned the GC’s interior also created the Durango’s interior, comfort and roominess are also first rate. Along with four-wheel-drive, Durango options include a system that signals you when another vehicle is about to overtake you or is traveling in your blind spot(s). Another system alerts you when another vehicle is approaching from behind as you’re backing out of a parking stall. Dodge also brags that the Durango’s generous fuel tank will allow you to travel up to 500 miles without filling up.

■ For 2011, the full-size sedan was significantly upgraded to include a new simplified front clip, integrated rear-deck spoiler, twin oval-shaped exhaust tips and a set of fastacting and very bright LED taillights. Inside, the 300 received all new front seats and a redesigned dashboard with genuine wood and aluminum-look trim. A 292-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 base engine is connected to an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission that replaces the five-speed unit on all but the base 300. Not only are the eight-speed’s shifts supposed to be quicker and smoother, but the new unit helps improve fuel economy to 19 mpg city and 31 highway, compared to 18/27 for the five-speed V6. For extra thrust, Chrysler’s optional 370-horsepower 5.7-liter “Hemi”

V8 returns to save gas by running on only four of its eight cylinders under light load conditions. But the really big news for 2012 is the return of the SRT8 performance package, highlighted by a 470-horsepower 6.4-liter (392 cubic-inch) V8. Loud and proud, it rides on 20-inch wheels, tops out at 175 mph and burns to 60 mph in less than five seconds. Compared to the previous SRT8’s 6.1-liter V8, there’s an extra 80 pound-feet of torque at 2,900 revs per minute, which makes for spirited part-throttle around-town driving. A 21 percent fuel economy increase (up to 23 mpg) on the highway is achieved by use of a new active-valve exhaust system that allows the standard Fuel Saver Technology (fourcylinder mode) to engage over a wider rpm range. As a treat to the ears, the new exhaust system opens up under higher loads. Both strong and stronger Hemis operate through five-speed automatic transmissions, however only models using the 5.7 V8 or V6 can be ordered with an available all-wheel-drive setup that uncouples the front axle when it’s not needed, reducing drag on the engine. The 2012 model lineup is comprised of the base 300, 300 Limited and 300S V6-equipped models as well as the V8-powered 300C, 300S and 300C Luxury Series. The latter includes just about every luxury amenity in the Chrysler parts warehouse, including a premium leather interior and 12-way power-adjustable driver and front-passenger heated and ventilated seats.

NEW-VEHICLE PREVIEW GUIDE 2012

2012 FEATURE

2012 FEATURE

CHEVROLET SONIC

FORD FOCUS

At long last, Chevrolet appears to be taking the small-car segment seriously. The company’s newest entry replaces the Korea-built Aveo that has been around since the 2004 model year. Like the Aveo, the Sonic is offered in both sedan and mini-wagon formats. However, these cars are constructed at GM’s Orion, Mich., Plant and not in Korea. Therefore, there’s plenty of North American style built into the Sonic, such as a stubbier-looking nose, more prominent grille and fancier headlight pods. In back, the sedan appears similar to the outgoing Aveo sedan, while the hatchback hides the rear door latches adjacent to the roof pillar. As well, the liftgate’s shape is one of the more stunning examples of this genre, with curved glass plus a set of really fancy taillamps that were apparently inspired by motorcycle headlights. Inside, the dashboard and control panel exude an up-level quality rarely seen in the econo-car class. Both Sonic body styles are larger than their outgoing Aveo counterparts by nearly 3.5 inches in overall length. In the sub-compact class, this increase is significant and helps provide a decent amount of passenger room. More is definitely better as far as performance is concerned. The Sonic roars to life with a 138-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder, or optional 138-horsepower 1.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged unit. Although horsepower ratings are the same, the turbocharged engine makes 148 pound-feet of torque compared with 125 pound-feet for the base 1.8. A five-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic comes on the 1.8, while the turbo is exclusively matched to a six-speed manual. Chevy says the extra-rigid body structure, wide stance and suspension components were tuned by the Corvette engineering team, which should ensure that the Sonic delivers a sporty driving experience. Base models arrive as relatively stripped-down price leaders but include 10 standard airbags. That’s equal to the Cruze, but four airbags more than the rest of the sub-compact pack. Among a variety of options are leathercovered seats (heated in front), power sunroof, MyChevrolet hands-free phone, text and audio connectivity and larger (up to 17 inches from 15) wheels.

2012 FEATURE

BUICK VERANO

Over here is the new Focus. Over there is the old Focus. No … there is no resemblance. And parked alongside its Fiesta relation, the Focus looks positively aggressive with its wide-open-mouth air intake and more planted stance. But for those who just can’t get with the sleek-looking hatchback, the sedan offers a more conservative silhouette. It’s also the only style available if you order the price-leader “S” that comes with manual climate control, tilt and telescopic steering wheel and basic fourspeaker audio system and 15-inch steel wheels. The SE sedan and hatchback add Ford’s Sync voice-activated communications and entertainment system plus some minor interior/ exterior upgrades, while SEL versions improve on the basics with a six-speed automated manual transmission, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting and 16-inch alloy wheels. The top-rung Titanium’s full-load content includes touch-screen audio and climate controls, push-button start, 10-speaker Sony sound system and a sport-tuned suspension with 17-inch wheels. On the options list are leather-covered seats, power sunroof, navigation system, rear-view camera and active park assist that will actually take over the parallelparking chores for you. For the fuel conscious, the optional SFE package - with its aero wheel covers, grille shutters, high-efficiency tires, four-wheel disc brakes and a rear spoiler — will reportedly achieve a 40-mpg highway rating. The standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is rated at 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque, which is 20 more horses and 10 more poundfeet of torque than the 2011 2.0-liter Focus engine. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on all models, while optional is a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual gearbox that conserves fuel by delivering lightning-quick gear changes. All models arrive with torque vectoring, which is a system that applies light braking pressure to slow down the inside wheel when the car is turning. This helps the Focus attack the corners with more precision by reducing the tendency to plow straight ahead (referred to as understeer). In the works is an electric Focus that features a 93-kilowatt (123-horsepower) motor and lithium-ion battery pack. Ford claims that recharging takes just three to four hours from a 240-volt home station available for about $1,500 from electronics retailer Best Buy.

920-922-2011 “We Sell Tires & Batteries too!” The Verano’s arrival constitutes a new direction for Buick … one that’s smaller and with cars that are sharper in just about every way. Already its compact Regal is making waves with its taut body, European-engineered suspension and standard and optional four-cylinder engine picks. The Regal’s only problem is that its $27,000 base price nudges up against that of the larger LaCrosse. The Verano starts at a much lower $23,500. It doesn’t come as well equipped as the loaded Regal, but its Chevrolet Cruze-based platform and basic body structure mean that it won’t be that much smaller than its sibling. For example, the Regal is only about two inches longer between the front and rear wheels, while passenger compartment volume is only two percent greater than on the Verano’s. Although base models come with leatherette (vinyl) and cloth seats, premium versions feature plenty of wood trim and overstuffed leathercovered seat cushions. For any compact car, this is ground-breaking. The Verano’s designers say they’ve gone out of their way to make the cabin a place of exemplary peace and quiet. They’ve added five layers of acoustic material within the headliner, sound-absorbing foam and other insulating materials stuffed into every possible nook and cranny, all door openings triple sealed and the use of thicker windshield and side glass for additional noise reduction. Other sound-defeating measures include specially designed tires and alloy wheels plus “quiet-tuned” intake and exhaust systems for the standard 180-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine (also standard in both Regal and LaCrosse) that’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Other standard gear includes dual-zone climate control, 10 standard airbags and GM’s OnStar concierge and help line that can also activate various functions (open doors, check fuel level, etc.) from your smart phone. A 220-horsepower four-cylinder turbocharged engine is on the option sheet and can be specified with a six-speed manual gearbox or a sixspeed automatic. Also optional is a heated steering wheel, push-button start, electronic parking brake, premium Bose audio package and 18-inch alloy wheels (17-inchers are standard).

Camaro Overall: Camaro is finally winning the pony-car sales war over the Ford Mustang, but Chevrolet is keeping its foot to the floor with new powertrains, interior tweaks and the giant-killing ZL1. Drivetrain: The base LS and LT are motivated by an updated 3.6-liter V6 that now puts out 323 horsepower (take that, Mustang!); the mid-range SS gets a 6.2-liter V8 with 426 horsepower; ultra-powerful ZL1 gets a 580-horsepower version of the Corvette ZR1’s engine. ■ The Chevrolet Camaro returns in 2012 to play a little game of one-upmanship with the revised Ford Mustang. The base LS and LT are now motivated by an upgraded and lighter 323-horsepower (up from 312) 3.6-liter V6 fitted with either a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic. The Camaro SS and its 6.2-liter V8 makes 426 horsepower with a six-speed manual transmission, or 400 with the six-speed automatic. The latter combo is equipped with a fuel-saving feature that shuts down half of its eight cylinders when coasting or under light load. SS models add beefier Brembo-brand brakes, lowered ride height, sport suspension, exclusive

20-inch wheels (18- and 19-inchers are standard) and a performance mode setting for the traction and stability control systems, which are vital to preventing this rear-drive machine from becoming too tail happy. Since the best Mustang is offered with a 550-horsepower supercharged V8, Chevrolet finally counters with a ZL1 Camaro that features a version of the 638-horsepower supercharged Corvette ZR1 engine, detuned slightly to 580 horsepower. While the Camaro’s general shape is retro-inspired, the lines on the ZL1 are bolder with more modern cues. It features a wide-front grille flanked by four fog lights, and a carbon-fiber hood vent. To handle all that power and torque, the ultimate Camaro gets the same Magnetic Ride Control found in the Corvette and CTS-V, and the clutch in the six-speed manual transmission is suitably beefed up (the six-speed automatic will remain an option). Expect it to hit dealers in early 2012. The “regular” convertible is available with the V6 or the 6.2-liter V8. It’s a great-looking shell for an interior that’s a mix of new and classic themes that will delight die-hard Camaro-istes; they’ll positively swoon over the revised twin center gauge pods and console-mounted dials like those found in early Camaros. Also new for 2012 is a new steering wheel, a more aggressive suspension package for the SS Coupe and a standard rear spoiler on all models.

And we’re not talking occasional seating for seven, but a full third-row seat for real, live, adult earthlings. While it would have been easy enough for Mazda to graft extra length and wheelbase to the CX-7 to create the CX-9 (and probably ruin the vehicle’s near-perfect proportions in the process) Mazda stylists were careful to make the CX-9 its own vehicle. The lines are a little less abrupt and exaggerated than those of the CX-7, and the overall look is certainly more formal. NEW-VEHICLE PREVIEW GUIDE 2012

THE REPORTER

2012 FEATURE

2012 FEATURE

MAZDA3

MAZDA5

Everyone loves a wide smile, but the Mazda3 is returning for 2012 with a revised look and front fascia that seems slightly less extreme than before. That’s small peanuts, though, compared to the all-new engine that’s new being offered. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder uses Mazda’s new “Skyactiv” direct-gasoline-injection technology to boost both power and efficiency. Compared to the old 2.0-liter (which carries over in base models) the Skyactiv has 155 horsepower (versus 148) and 148 pound-feet of torque (versus 135). It also wins in fuel economy too, netting 28/40 mpg with the available six-speed automatic transmission, or 27/39 with the six-speed manual. Very impressive. But Skyactiv is really more than just a powertrain upgrade as the philosophy extends to lowering weight, improving chassis stiffness and steering response. Only the Skyactiv Mazda3 is upgraded in such a manner. If you’re not getting into the Skyactiv game, your choices consist of carryover models from 2011. The sedan is offered in i SV, i Sport and i Touring trims and runs with the same 148-horsepower 2.0-liter fourcylinder engine that’s connected to the five-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic. The Mazda3 “s” models, which include “s Sport” and “s Grand Touring” sedan and wagon, have the exclusive use of a 167-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder that’s derived from the larger Mazda6 sedan. Here, your transmission picks consist of a slick-shifting sixspeed manual gearbox or an optional five-speed automatic. The Mazdaspeed3 wagon is also back sporting its 263-horsepower 2.3-liter turbocharged engine. Here, drivers are treated to sportier looks, wider front fenders, hood scoop, bigger wheels and tighter seats. The price-leader Mazda3 i SV sedan is somewhat content starved, but does include power windows and locks, six airbags, tilt/telescopic steering column and a four-speaker stereo with steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. The i Sport includes a few more goodies, but you have to move up to the i Touring for a reasonably full complement of standard equipment. The s Sport sedans and wagons feature a wealth of features and the s Grand Touring’s list of gear is highlighted by adaptive xenon headlights (they swivel left or right as the vehicle turns), rain-sensing wipers, a 265watt 10-speaker surround sound system, moonroof, and eight-way power heated and leather-covered sport seats.

The original Mazda5 that was introduced for the 2006 model year delivered plenty of style, comfort for six people and exceptional fuel economy all wrapped up in a compact package. The newly updated 2012 edition promises more of the same. The Mazda5’s platform is based on the same one that supports the Mazda3 sedan/hatchback, except that it has been stretched by five inches between the front and rear wheels to accommodate three rows of seats. Interestingly, Mazda’s mini minivan is actually a hair shorter than the Mazda3 sedan, which restricts the amount gear you can cram into the back when all three rows of seats are in use. However the highly versatile interior allows you to fold flat either or both of the sliding and reclining second-row buckets, or the 50:50 split folding rear bench to create the exact mix of passengers and cargo. Along with its refreshed styling, the Mazda5 now comes with a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder powerplant that’s also employed in the Mazda3 and Mazda6 passenger cars as well as the CX-7 tall wagon. For its role in the Mazda5, the 2.5 produces a peak 157 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque, up from 153 horses and 148 pound-feet of torque that the outgoing 2.3-liter generated. The Mazda5 continues to be the only vehicle in its class that’s available with a manual gearbox. A new six-speed unit is standard on base models, while a five-speed automatic is optional. Fuel economy is rated at 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway with either transmission. Along with the manual trans, the base Sport features the usual air conditioning and power-operated accessories, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, sixspeaker audio system and 16-inch alloy wheels. The mid-grade Touring adds the automatic transmission plus fog lights, rear liftgate spoiler, Bluetooth short-range wireless networking and 17-inch wheels, while the premium Grand Touring is laden with a power moonroof, leather-covered seats (heated in front), premium audio package, highintensity-discharge headlights, rain-sensing wipers and a premium audio package. In essence, the Mazda5 is the complete package, minus the size and capacity of its much bigger competitors, of course, but also without their much higher list prices and their bigger appetites at the gas pumps.
