It’s a wagon world out there and Dodge is quite literally embarking on a new Journey. In fact, models of similar shape and style are must-haves for all automakers. Versatility is what this tall wagon is all about as anyone who owns the smaller Dodge Caliber will attest. In base trim there’s seating for five people, but up-level versions offer a twoplace third-row 50/50 split bench. There are also some other clever interior storage options such as a front passenger seat with a flipforward hinged cushion that’s ideal for concealing cameras, purses and other valuables. And all models feature two in-floor storage compartments with removable plastic liners behind the front seats that are large enough to hold a dozen beverage cans each, plus ice. Also don’t forget the chilled storage bin inside the glove compartment that can keep a couple of additional beverages at the ready. Although actually influenced by the Dodge Avenger sedan, this roomier derivation has five extra inches between the front and rear wheels and an eight-inch advantage in height, but with an overall length that is greater by just 1.5 inches. The dimensions bode well for passenger comfort

and for piling on the cargo, especially when both back seats and the front passenger bucket are folded flat. The front-wheel-drive SE is fitted with a 173-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder, with a 235-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 accompanying the mid-line SXT and top-grade R/T. All-wheel-drive is optional on all 3.5-liter equipped Journeys. The system automatically kicks in to direct power to the rear wheels when needed, including slippery mud and snow conditions as well as when the vehicle is accelerating up to 65 mph. A fourspeed automatic transmission comes with the 2.4 while the 3.5 gets a six-speed automatic. Base Journey equipment includes air conditioning, adjustable steering wheel, keyless remote entry, CDequipped audio system, power windows, locks and mirrors and a complete range of safety gear. There’s also an “Eco” light that helps you drive to save fuel. Up level models offer leather seating surfaces, roof rack, backup camera, navigation system, 19-inch wheels and a flashlight stored in the cargo area.

Dodge’s big-truck-for-big-jobs pickup sits atop a stronger, lighter chassis; available in regular, Crew and Mega Crew cab styles. Dodge’s big-and-baaaad 2500 and 3500 series pickups are the perfect companion if you need to move your yacht, house . . . or maybe something really heavy. The new HD borrows most of the lighter-duty Ram 1500’s sheetmetal, but attaches it to an allnew and much more rigid chassis. The result is a truck that can haul and tow an inordinate amount of whatever you have. The starting point is Chrysler’s venerable 5.7-liter “Hemi’ V8 that for 2010 has been beefed up to 383 horsepower, a gain of 28 compared to last year’s engine. That’s still seven shy of the same engine in the light-duty-Ram line. However, lots of HD buyers who work these rigs hard might want to consider the 6.7-liter Cummins turbo-diesel option, a straight-six carry over from 2009 that’s rated at 350 horsepower and, more importantly 650 pound-feet of torque at 1,500 rpm. The practicalities of this motor extend to its ability to be driven for 350,000 miles between major overhauls, something that Dodge claims is at least 100,000 miles better than the

diesel-pickup competition. The cleanburning 50-state-legal Cummins has a standard exhaust brake that uses the engine’s compression to help decelerate. This class-leading feature provides an extra measure of safety while braking under heavy loads plus it extends the life of the brake linings. The Hemi is connected to a five-speed automatic transmission, while the diesel comes with a six-speed manual, or optional six-speed automatic. The off-road-oriented Power Ram option returns with a package of features that includes four-wheel-drive with electriclocking front and rear differentials, electronic disconnecting sway bar, skid plates, special hill-climbing axle ratio, 32inch tires and a 12,000-pound-capacity winch to help get you or your friends out of trouble after traveling way too far off the beaten path.

relief for ragged rims

Stylish wheels have become standard equipment on a majority of today’s cars and trucks. But, if your rims are scratched or damaged, their appearance can be embarrassing and bring down the value of your vehicle. Regardless of where you drive and how careful you are, wheel damage is hard to avoid. Your wheels can easily suffer dings and scratches from stones, road debris and potholes, as well as dulling, pitting and corrosion from car wash chemicals and the effects of weather.

Fortunately, there is an easy solution to the problem, and you don’t have to lay out big bucks for new wheels or take your damaged ones to a repair shop. You can fix your wheels yourself to a “like new” condition and save hundreds of dollars in the process with an easyto-use Wheel Restoration Kit developed by Permatex, a leading innovator of automotive repair and appearance products. The Permatex Wheel Restoration Kit can help you fix the damaged surface on your wheels and restore the original silver metallic finish and overall appearance. The kit comes with simple, step-by-step instructions and everything you need for a professional looking

restoration, including a premium, high performance wheel paint. The finished repair is permanent and resistant to chemicals, brake dust, heat, and chipping. To help ensure an easy, high quality repair, Permatex has developed three demonstration videos in English and Spanish: Dents and Grooves; Curbside Rashes, Scuffs and Scratches; and Corrosion, Rust and Minor Scratches. Each video covers the entire repair process, step by step. All of the videos are free, and can be viewed online at: www.permatexrepair.com. Whether you’re a do-it-yourselfer or a pro, you can make wheels look new, without special tools or training. The kit works on all types of metal wheels, including aluminum, alloy, steel, and mixed metals. It’s not recommended for chrome wheels, plastic wheel covers, or structural damage. You should be able to get Permatex’s Wheel Restoration Kit at leading auto parts stores for less than $25.00. For the finishing touch, give your tires a high tech shine with No Touch Turbo Wet, a new shinier, longer lasting tire dressing, also from Permatex.

Chevrolet Equinox

If there were a congeniality award for automobiles, the Equinox would rank as one of the leading contenders. Chevrolet’s popular mid-size utility wagon has attracted buyers since 2005 with its handsome looks, roomy surroundings and solid construction. General Motors’ “Bowtie” division has taken a bold-isbeautiful approach for model year 2010; taken as a whole, the Equinox appears closely related to its 2009 Traverse sibling. More muscular-looking sheetmetal and a widened stance make the Equinox appear larger, but in fact the vehicle maintains a slightly modified version of its previous platform. Curiously, storage space with either the rear seat in place or folded flat has decreased by close to 10 percent. Integrating the rocker panels with the doors reduces entry step-over height and helps keep pant legs from brushing up against the vehicle’s lower body area. Chev’s designers created a gorgeous interior that includes dual gloveboxes, easy-to-read twin gauge pods and plenty of handy storage bins. Retained from the previous model is a versatile split folding rear seat that can be adjusted fore and aft over an eightinch range to optimize legroom or cargo

capacity. A 182-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder becomes the new base engine. Although not as torquey as the outgoing 185-horsepower 3.4-liter V6, the four’s 21/30 mpg estimated city/ highway fuel economy blows away the 3.4’s 17/24 rating by a whopping 33 percent. Chevrolet expects that fully two-thirds of Equinox customers will opt for this powerplant, even if it trades off quite a bit of pep. Optional is a 3.0-liter V6 with 255 horsepower that earns an estimated 18/25 mpg rating, only slightly better than the outgoing 3.4. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard with both the I4 and V6, and all-wheel-drive is available no matter the powerplant. A wide assortment of standard equipment (air conditioning, cruise control, keyless remote entry and power windows/locks/ mirrors, etc.) is included on base versions; moving up into the top-line LTZ adds climate control, heated leather seats, 18inch wheels, extra trim, and premium audio. With its new skin, friendly interior and thriftier power choices, the Equinox projects a more fashionable presence and one that appears eager to pack up the gang and tackle the tasks at hand. It’s tough to get more congenial than that.

This big (4,700-pounds big) V6-powered SUV carries over from last year with exactly one new enhancement: a USB port in the centre console for connecting to portable music players. GM has done a better-than-average job of making the vehicles look and feel unique between the brands. Chevrolet is the latest of four General Motors divisions to get a version of this full-size tall wagon platform. It is more fuel efficient than GM’s traditional body-on-frame V8 models such as the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon, even though they’re about the same size and can transport nearly as many passengers. The bold split grille now seen on nearly all Chevy cars and trucks is bracketed by a pair of neatly integrated headlight pods plus a set of fog lamps that look as though they were lifted from the Malibu sedan. The roofline and side glass is similar to that of the Buick Enclave, while the rear is distinctly Chevrolet. The interior displays a passenger-car-like quality, with large, legible gauges and controls that are housed in an attractive dashboard that won’t require extensive study of the owner’s manual to decipher. Traverse’s passenger and cargo roominess trumps that of the Tahoe, whether all three

or

rows of seats are folded flat or left upright. An extra-large folding floor console can be ordered that fills the gap between the optional second-row chairs. Traverse has a 3.6-liter V6 that produces 281 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque or 288 ponies and 270 pound-feet of torque with the optional dual exhaust. The engine operates through six-speed automatic transmissions with a “steep” first gear that helps to better launch the vehicle from a standing start. The optional allwheel-drive system seamlessly distributes power to either the front or rear wheels, depending on road conditions and driver input. Stability control, a system that reduces the likelihood of a skid or spin, is standard equipment as is traction control. The Traverse comes in LS, LT and LTZ versions, with the expected air/cruise/tilt and power controls as part of the base package. On the long list of available content, of which some will be standard on the LT and/or LTZ, are 18 or 20-inch wheels (17-inch alloys are standard), perforated leather seats, heated and cooled front buckets, power liftgate, rear-view camera, power-folding outside mirrors, premium audio system and individual sunroofs for the first two rows.

travel tips hit the ground running

easy tricks to

conserve fuel Whether due to the struggling economy or an increased desire to live a more environmentally-conscious life, many of the nation’s drivers are exploring ways in which they can conserve fuel. While riding a bicycle to work or taking public transportation are both reliable means to conserving fuel, there are many other ways to do so as well.

Perhaps no other time of year is more anticipated than spring. After a cold winter, many people await the arrival of spring like a child awaits the arrival of Christmas morning . . . Among the more popular annual rites of spring is the road trip. A chance to tackle the great outdoors with the spring wind in your hair, spring road trips have come to define a season beloved by outdoor enthusiasts. For those planning their own road trip this season, consider the following tips to ensure yours goes off without a hitch. • Give your car a thorough wash. While it might seem obvious to get your car washed once spring arrives, few might be aware that a thorough car wash pays practical as well as aesthetic dividends. Over the course of a typical winter, vehicles are exposed to all sorts of harmful elements, including salt used to improve icy road conditions and slush and grime leftover over from winter snowstorms. These elements can create deposits that make it difficult for a car to run smoothly, resulting in poor fuel efficiency and possibly harming the vehicle even further. So while a freshly cleaned car might look the part of the perfect vehicle on a spring road trip, there’s also substance behind that image, as a clean car is guaranteed to run more smoothly. • Don’t forget the first aid kit, but pack it last. Road trips, especially those with active kids

• Don’t accelerate too quickly. Accelerating too quickly from a dead stop taxes the engine and requires more fuel as a result.

along for the ride, often include a few cuts or scrapes. That’s why it’s always wise to take inventory of the first aid kit before heading out on the road. Make sure the first aid kit is fully stocked since the last time you hit the road. Also, be sure to pack the first aid last, after all the luggage and snacks. In case of a legitimate emergency, you will want the first aid kit readily available and won’t want to waste time digging it out from under everything else in the trunk of the car.

• Don’t overfill the gas tank. When filling your tank, stop once you hear the first click at the pump. Overfilling will simply lead to spillover. • Empty the trunk. It might be convenient to keep your golf clubs in the trunk, but that excess weight could be forcing your engine to work harder and use more fuel as a result. • Close the windows when driving at higher speeds. When the windows are open at high speeds, that added air drag is reducing your vehicle’s fuel efficiency substantially.

• Give a passenger a spare set of car keys. No one plans on losing their car keys; it just happens from time to time. At home, this can be a nuisance. On a road trip, particularly one to a remote area, this can be a disaster. While you don’t have to plan on losing your keys, you can plan on what you’ll do if you lose them by making a spare set for a passenger along for the trip. That way, if your travels take you on a hike in some isolated woodlands or to soak up some rays at the beach, you’ll have a spare set of keys readily available should yours end up missing.

• Don’t idle too long in the mornings to “warm up” the vehicle. In general, a vehicle does not need more than 60 seconds of warming up to be able to operate efficiently. • Don’t rev the engine like you’re driving a race car. Revving the engine needlessly wastes fuel and can even lead to engine damage. • Maintain your vehicle. Older filters make it harder for an engine to run at maximum efficiency, so stick to the recommended maintenance schedule.

• Bring along a cooler for snacks and beverages. Many a road trip has been bogged down by pitstops at roadside eateries or convenience stores for things as simple as a snack or a bottle water. However, road trippers can make great time and save a little money by packing a cooler filled with snacks and beverages. For those short on space, consider a collapsible cooler. Unlike traditional bulky coolers made of hard plastic, collapsible coolers fold up easily when not in use, creating valuable storage space as a result.

• Don’t keep winter, or snow, tires on your vehicle once the weather has warmed up. Deep tire tread might help you navigate your way along snowcovered roads in the winter, but that deep tread also makes the engine work harder to keep a car running smoothly, and that extra work uses up more fuel. • Keep tires properly inflated. Poorly inflated tires lead to drag that makes the engine work harder and use more fuel.

Hyundai Tucson

or

f New

! 0 1 0 2

Hyundai Sonata

Sick of seeing the same old sedans year after year? Each one more boring than the next. The all-new Hyundai Sonata breaks up the monotony of the mid-size with bold-not-boring styling and a new fuel-efficient engine.

An all-new Tucson is expected to be announced later this year; details are somewhat sketchy at this point. Drivetrain: Choice of two four-cylinder powerplants; the V6 option has been dropped. The compact Tucson has been a pillar for Hyundai (more than one million have been sold around the globe since its launch for 2005), especially with buyers shunning big and thirsty sport utility vehicles in favor of thrifty wagons. The Tucson’s efficiency level is expected to increase for 2010 when an all-new model hits the streets, possibly by spring. The new five-passenger Tucson has already been unveiled in Asia and Europe and, except for a few minor changes, the North American version that arrives in a few months time will appear similar. The significantly more stylish bodywork looks to be a juniorsized cross between the mid-size Santa Fe and full-size Veracruz wagons. The current base model’s 140-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine will carry over, with a larger 2.4-liter four-cylinder producing an estimated 175 horsepower available as an option. Fans of the V6 version will have to look elsewhere, possibly to the larger Santa Fe. The five-

speed manual transmission will likely repeat, however both powerplants will get a six-speed automatic as an option. Front- and all-wheel-drive versions will continue, with the latter offering hillstart-assist and downhill-brake control for added stability in steep terrain, which suggests that this Tuscon will be far more off-road agile than the original. There will also be some fancy optional extras to choose from, including a panoramic sunroof, leather-covered seats, wideangle rear-view camera, navigation system and likely some more upscale interior finishings. A competitive bottom line is mandatory in the crowded small utility world, so pricing will likely sneak in under the $20,000 mark, including destination charges. Of course, you can count on Hyundai’s all-encompassing 10-year powertrain, and five-year comprehensive warranties to apply to the Tucson.

By questioning the cookie-cutter design that most sedans follow, the designers and engineers in our Southern California Design Center spent four years developing the sleek couple-like design of the all-new Hyundai Sonata. You can see their unique point of view along the elegant curves and arcs, sculpted chrome grill and the raked roofline that give it a fluid-like feel even when it’s standing still. And at the heart of the new Hyundai Sonata is the new fuel-efficient engine. When you hear fuel efficient, you automatically think you have to sacrifice performance. Not the case with the Hyundai Sonata’s new 4 cylinder 2.4L GDI engine. It appeals to car lovers and nature lovers with a perfect combination of high power output and fuel efficiency. You’re probably wondering how the Sonata can achieve exemplary mileage and still offer an impressive 200 horsepower. One of the ways is by being the first vehicle in its class with standard Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) technology. Most engines inefficiently take in fuel, but with GDI fuel is directly injected into the combustion chamber providing a more precise amount of fuel into each cylinder.

So, it looks like in a world of play–it-safe sedans, there is only one sedan that plays it smart. The Hyundai Sonata proves that you don’t have to conform to compete. It takes a certain kind of person to become a safety engineer at Hyundai. First, you have to be able to imagine all the ways in which things can go wrong. And then you have to find ways to make them right. With that as a job description, it’s no wonder that our safety engineers wanted to equip the Sonata with as many features and technologies as they could. Electronic Stability Control5, Traction Control and an advanced ABS braking system are standard across the board— all of which are designed to help you outmaneuver dangers on the road. And when it comes to protecting passengers, the Sonata’s reinforced unibody design and advanced front airbags11 are there to help in the event of a crash. All of which adds up to a Sonata that’s one of the safest cars in its class. Its got a 400-watt Infinity® audio system, a six-disc CD changer and MP3 player, USB/iPod® and auxiliary input jacks. Plus, XM® Satellite Radio3, touchscreen navigation4, Bluetooth®, and HD Radio® Technology. But there’s more to an interior than gadgets. Ergonomics, climate control, storage options, seat comfort — we found a way to include them all.

Mercury Milan

Lincoln MKZ

or

f New

! 0 1 0 2

It’s a softer and perhaps more elegant version of the Ford Fusion; redesigned for 2010 to be quieter and more fuel efficient; standard traction and stability control. Base 2.5 engine replaces the 2.3; 3.0-liter V6 jumps to 240 horses; Hybrid model challenges class-leading Toyota Camry Hybrid for fuel-efficiency crown.

and the floor-console cupholders. The starting-point 175-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder represents a gain of 15 ponies from the previous 160-horse 2.3-liter base powerplant. Ford claims to have lopped one second off the fourcylinder’s zero-to-60-mph time while improving highway fuel economy by at least six mpg. The previously optional 3.0-liter V6 returns, but significant retuning has improved output to 240 horsepower from 221. If you’re looking for the Fusion’s 3.5-liter V6, that’s exactly where you’ll have to get it since the Milan does not have a parallel to the Fusion’s Sport model, which is the only model that receives the 263-horse engine. A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the 2.5, while a six-speed automatic is optional, but standard with the 3.0. The 2010 V6-powered Milan can also be had with all-wheel-drive, a feature not currently offered on any of the company’s direct competitors. The Hybrid combines a 156-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a 106-horsepower electric motor for a net output of 191 horses. The Hybrid combo is mated to a continuously variable transmission and can travel up to 47 mph on battery power alone. Ford claims the Hybrid can travel up to 700 miles on a single 17 gallon fill-up, or the equivalent of 41 mpg city/36 mpg highway. Not bad for the Hybrid’s $28,200 base price that includes delivery. Expect the usual standard power amenities on Milan and a unique two-tone interior as well as a very cool hands-free gas-filler cap.

In the three years since the Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ and Ford Fusion siblings were launched, Ford has continued to benchmark the leading sedan contenders, including the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Chevrolet Malibu and Nissan Altima. But the real question is, what’s the difference between Milan and Fusion? It boils down to a softer and perhaps more elegant look. So, which look do you like better? The Milan is actually less than completely new since it continues to employ a modified Mazda6based platform (Ford has a working relationship with Mazda). However, considerable upgrading has been done to the suspension, braking and steering systems to improve ride and handling. In addition, thicker glass, extra sounddeadening material and improved door sealing helps reduce wind and road noise. On the inside, Mercury has covered many of the surfaces with a soft-touch “skin” that looks and feels more upscale. The seats get added side support and the coverings are also richer in appearance. Finally, the revised gauges are better lit using an easier-to-read threedimensional effect and new ambient lighting now brightens up the footwells

It’s not just about features or power or the ride. It’s also about style, and this entry-level luxury sedan delivers the goods on all four counts. But why no hybrid or turbocharged “EcoBoost” option? The MKZ starts with the 263-horsepower V6 linked to a reworked six-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels; all-wheel-drive is optional, but the engine remains the same as before. The choices are many for sedan buyers with dollars in their wallets and a burning desire for a fancy set of wheels. As the starting point for the Lincoln brand, the mid-sized MKZ’s role is to exude a proper sense of luxury that typifies what buyers can expect throughout the lineup. To accomplish this, the frontwheel-drive Ford Fusion- /Mercury Milan-based sedan requires regular updating and grooming to keep it fresh and on par with the competition. The “Z” appears more in step with its larger MKS sibling and will not be confused with anything else on the road. Extra luxury has been built into the interior, which receives a new dash layout, revised leather-clad seats (heated and cooled in front). Driving characteristics

have been altered through changes to the rear suspension that lower the car’s center of gravity for improved cornering; the car turns tighter and a new power-steering unit reduces low-speed effort. A newly available sport-suspension option includes revised springs and anti-sway bars, 18-inch wheels (17-inchers are standard) along with a few minor styling mods. All-wheeldrive versions have been retuned for quieter operation and improved traction under acceleration. Back for more is the 263-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, while the six-speed automatic transmission has been reworked to help produce quicker acceleration while improving highway economy. Along with a plusher and more pampering interior, the MKZ gets a standard dual-zone climate control, 10-way power front seats, tilt/ telescoping steering wheel, rainsensing wipers, nine-speaker 360watt sound package and Sync, Ford’s voice-activated communication and entertainment system. Optional are voice-activated navigation, backup camera, headlamps that pivot in the direction of a turn, and a 600-watt 14-speaker surround-sound system that can also store up to 2,400 music tracks on its built-in computer drive.

moderately altered for 2010. The sedan is offered in i SV, i Sport and i Touring trims and runs with the same 148-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine installed in the outgoing model. When connected to the newly optional five-speed automatic transmission (a five-speed manual is standard), the powertrain achieves an 11-percent improvement in fuel economy. The Mazda3 “s” models, which include s Sport and s Grand Touring sedan and wagon, have the exclusive use of a 167-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder that’s derived from the larger Mazda6 sedan. Here, your transmission picks consist of a slick-shifting six-speed manual gearbox or an optional five-speed automatic. All four engine/ transmission combos remain impressive and you can expect a lively base engine, especially when coupled to the silky smooth stick shift. On the other hand, the new 2.5 engine clearly packs a bigger wallop

The 2010 Mazda3 sedan and wagon receive bolder front and rear fenders, more prominent character lines along the doors and a rear-end tweak and tuck. The carried-over platform has been made more rigid in certain critical areas, such as where the revised front and rear suspension components are attached and around the door openings. Compared to the previous Mazda3, the new car feels significantly more capable, especially on twisty roads. A redesigned cabin is quieter and more spacious despite maintaining similar dimensions. Credit goes to the new “soft-touch” dashboard, control-panel layout and floor console that helps project a richness that the previous cars lacked. The lineup has been

than the outgoing 156-horse 2.3. The Mazdaspeed3 wagon is also back for 2010 sporting the previous model’s 263-horsepower 2.3-liter turbocharged engine. Here, drivers are treated to sportier looks, winder front fenders, hood scoop, bigger wheels and tighter seats. The price-leader Mazda3 i SV sedan is somewhat content starved, but does include power windows, six airbags, tilt/telescopic steering column and a four-speaker stereo with steeringwheel-mounted audio controls. The i Sport includes a few more goodies, but you have to move up to the i Touring for a reasonably full complement of standard equipment. The s Sport sedans and wagons feature a wealth of features and the s Grand Touring’s list of gear is highlighted by adaptive xenon headlights (they swivel left or right as the vehicle turns), rainsensing wipers and eight-way power heated and leather-covered sport seats.

GMC Terrain

or

f New

! 0 1 0 2

A down-to-earth sport utility vehicle with a shape and interior design that are out of this world. An efficient 2.4-liter fourcylinder drives the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission, which does double duty to deliver power from the optional 3.0-liter V6. It’s a certainty that no other vehicle built to the Terrain’s compact dimensions has brandished the GMC label before now. The five-passenger Terrain shares its platform and powertrains with the second-generation Chevrolet Equinox that also arrived this summer, though you would never guess these two are in any way related. No bones about it, this is one good-looking rig. GM has put much effort into crafting exceptional interiors of late and the control panel for the Terrain would seem right at home in one of the company’s premium-priced models. There are bucket seats up front and the split-folding rear bench has eight inches of sliding fore-and-aft travel for optimum passenger or cargo room. Additional containment spots include an oversized glove box with separate instrument panel storage, a built-incenter-console bin suitable for concealing a laptop plus two-tier storage areas built into the door panels. A 182-horsepower

Ford Taurus

Ubiquitous would describe the widely used 263-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine that drives the front wheels via a standard six-speed automatic transmission; the “raging bull” SHO adds twin turbochargers and other performance upgrades to the V6, causing 365 horses to enervate all four wheels.

2.4-liter four-cylinder is standard while a 264-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 is optional. Both operate with six-speed automatic transmissions and both can be had with front- or optional all-wheel-drive. Towing capacity for the four-cylinder is 1,500 pounds, while the V6 is rated for 3,500. Base SLE models feature the usual air/ tilt/power accessories along with a few unusual standard features such as a rearvision camera and 12 months of OnStar, GM’s remote help and courtesy concierge service. All four-cylinder Terrains come with Active Noise Cancellation that uses microphones to detect noise. The system responds by emitting counteracting and continuous sound waves through the audio system. For buyers looking to ease into the entry-utility bracket, or for those wanting to downscale from their previous full-size perches, the featureladen Terrain is worth a look. In fact it’s quite likely that GMC will have a big hit with its new small-world wonder.

An all-new Taurus recaptures the spirit of the original, then takes it over the horizon in terms of ride, comfort and style. A new shape that went from drawing board to showroom in just 24 months conveys a unique and elegantly aggressive style that was lacking in previous efforts. Moving the new Taurus along is the familiar 263-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 found in a host of Ford products. The base SE gets the standard six-speed automatic transmission with a system that prevents the car from rolling backward on an incline. SEL and Limited editions are upgraded with steeringwheel-mounted shift paddles and a rev-matching program for smoother downshifts. In addition, the Limited offers all-wheel-drive as an option. Allwheel-drive is a standard part of the high-performance SHO package, a model that returns to the Taurus lineup after an 11-year absence. This raging bull is fitted with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 that generates 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. It also gets the paddle-shifted rev-matching six-speed

or

automatic. The basic chassis architecture has undergone significant stiffening and retuning to improve driving precision and ride comfort. Other highlights include a unique grille, rear-deck spoiler, sport-tuned suspension, 19- or optional 20-inch wheels, leather-coated interior, 10-way adjustable front seat and pushbutton start. Interior highlights include a Mustang-inspired dashboard and control-panel layout that smoothly flows into a sizable floor console. The extensive list of available add-ons includes an exterior keyless-entry keypad and adaptive cruise control that maintains a safe distance from vehicles traveling in front. Also available is blind-spot warning, an alert system that indicates when other vehicles are approaching from the sides while you’re backing up and multi-contour front seats that provide six-way lumbar (lower-back) support and “rolling pattern” massage. As a parental-control program, Ford’s MyKey mutes the audio system until the seat belts are buckled (and restricts audio volume thereafter), keeps the traction- and stability-control functions engaged and limits top speed to 80 mph. Out-the-door pricing begins at $26,000 (same as the 2009 version), or $38,000 for the livelier SHO. That plus all the new features and equipment should ensure the Taurus’s good health for years to come.
