Acting as your own planner can help save money on your wedding reception. From ordering wedding napkins and favors to deciding how much cake and drinks to have on hand, you can keep a handle on costs by self-managing as many reception-related tasks as possible. But how do you know how much to buy? Buy too little of any important item and you could run out, leaving guests hungry, thirsty and disappointed. resource for brides seeking unique wedding favors, wedding decorations and wedding supplies, offer these tips for calculating how much you’ll need of key reception items:

beverages

With all the dancing and celebrating they’ll be doing, your guests are sure to work up a thirst. It’s important to calculate the right amount of beverages to buy so you don’t run out. A good rule of thumb is to plan for one drink per person, per hour. You may need more or less depending upon the make-up of your crowd. Lots of kids? You’ll probably need less alcohol and more soft drinks. Plenty of adults who love a good party? You may need to adjust the amount of alcohol accordingly. Here are some averages to give you a starting point: • Beer - Three to four beers per person. • Champagne - Two glasses per person (mostly for the toasts). • Wine - Three quarters of a bottle per

The Source r You u Can

person. One bottle of wine or champagne yields about six to seven glasses. • Soft drinks - Three to four servings per person. A 2-liter bottle holds seven to nine drink servings. It’s always good to err on the side of caution and order more than you think you will need - about a third more is standard. Check with your distributor before you order; some will allow you to return unopened bottles.

food

If you’ll serve cocktails and hors d’oeuvres before the reception, limit this time to an hour or 90 minutes - you don’t want guests filling up before the main event. Estimate three hors d’oeuvres per person, per hour roughly five per person for the entire time. If your reception will be a cocktail/hors d’oeuvres event without a sit-down dinner, increase your calculations to 12 pieces per guest. If you’re serving a sit-down dinner, one plate per person per course should be

your starting point. You may choose to ask the kitchen/caterer to have some extras on hand in case anyone requests seconds or some last-minute guests arrive. For the wedding cake, simply tell your baker how many guests will attend and they can recommend the size cake you’ll need. It’s good to estimate more servings than invited guests as some may want seconds or bring last-minute additions to the party. If you’ll serve desserts other than cake, estimate one to two servings per guest.

napkins

Personalized or plain, linen or three-ply, wedding napkins are a wedding reception must-have item. It’s hard to imagine going overboard and having too many napkins, but it could happen - and if it does you may find yourself using those napkins at your first anniversary celebration. To ensure your napkin buying is on target with your needs, follow these guidelines:

Trust For A Lifetime

• One and a half dinner or luncheon napkins per guest at the meal table if you won’t be using linen napkins. For example, if you’ll have 100 guests, plan for 150 dinner napkins.

finally, favors This one may seem obvious - one favor per guest. In reality, however, you need to allow for breakage (What if someone drops a box of favors on the way into the reception hall and several shatter?) and guests who may ask to take an extra favor home for a relative or friend who wasn’t able to attend. Increasing your favor purchase by just 10 percent won’t cost that much more, but could allow you to send guests home with an extra favor or two. ●

Today’s generations give wedding traditions a

modern twist Weddings today are a combination of something old and something new. Brides and grooms are finding ways to mix beloved classic traditions with exciting new trends. Everything from the cake to the dress to the photos is undergoing a makeover.

dress

When it comes to wedding gowns, strapless reigns. Some brides choose one shoulder strap or capped sleeves that only cover the shoulders, but most go sleeveless, said Sharon Paul, bridal supervisor at Edith’s Bridal and Tuxedo Junction, 9 S. Main St. Removable sleeves are optional. Dresses tend to have textured fabric, chiffon, flowers, lace and pleating. Removable belts, bands and flowers are popular, she said.

Brides tend to choose colors that best suit their skin tone. They’ll opt for off-white shades like ivory, although diamond white is very popular, she said.

bridesmaids

Chapel-length or long trains are big. Brides on destination weddings may select a shorter train; a dress that’s comfortable and easy to move around in, said Paul. But they won’t sacrifice elegance for convenience — they still want a special wedding dress.

Barber said Edith’s sells a lot of floor-length bridesmaid dresses. Knee-length and shorter skirts are available.

Single-shoulder strapped dresses and flowers are popular for bridesmaid dresses, said Judy Barber, supervisor in the bridesmaids department at Edith’s Bridal. Today, many brides choose the color but bridesmaids choose the style, she said. Cobalt blue is the most popular shade, and solid colors reign over patterns.

Few brides wear their mother’s or grandmother’s wedding dresses nowadays. Instead, they’ll have a piece of the dress incorporated into their gown, or they’ll wear their grandmother’s or mother’s jewelry, she said. “They want to have their own unique look,” Paul said. The long, poofy veil is losing momentum to the cage veil — a smaller veil made of English or Russian netting that covers a small portion, half of or all of the face. It’s clipped into hair with a jeweled comb or flower, Paul said. Gowns without a train vary from $150 to $400, she said. The average dress with a train costs $900. Edith’s most expensive gown costs more than $2,000. Paul said brides seem willing to cut elsewhere to afford their dream dress. Paul recommends brides allow at least nine months for their dress. It usually takes four to six months to arrive after ordering, and fittings take place three months before the wedding. It helps that many dresses now have lace-up backs to allow room for weight loss or gain before the ceremony.

Party & Event Planning Service

The average dress costs $175 to $180. Barber recommends ordering dresses five to six months before the wedding to allow time for production and fitting.

tuxedos

Men are going gray for their weddings. Gray is the latest and most popular trend in wedding tuxedos, said Rebecca Pluim, manager of the tuxedo department at Edith’s Bridal. “Everybody’s booking it because it’s something different,” she said. Black pinstripe still has followers, and browns are big for fall weddings, she said. Men are also choosing lighter fabric to stay cool during summer. Pluim said suits are growing in demand because they’re attractive and cost less than tuxedos. An average tuxedo rental costs $125, but a suit costs about $65 to rent. She added that Edith’s has more than 25 tuxedos in stock and numerous accessories. Edith’s is the only shop in the region that owns and keeps all its tuxedos in-house. Pluim recommends ordering tuxedos four to six months in advance, and men should be measured six to eight weeks before the wedding. continued on page 8

rings

available, but most couples now request digital copies, said Gary Scheer, owner of Scheer’s Photography, 501 Bittersweet Lane, Waupun.

The Goldsmith can handle the entire ring process under its roof, from designing jewelry to making it.

They don’t need to wait until the prints are ready to see their pictures. Customers will receive a password so they can see their photos online. Scheer said photos are posted to a special online account where clients may see their photos anytime, anywhere from a computer or cell phone — any device with Internet access. Couples may give their password to family or friends who’d like to view the pictures.

White gold is a popular component in rings, although yellow gold and two-tone shades are making a comeback, said Ron Emanuel, owner of The Goldsmith, 177 S. Main St.

“A lot of people are tired of the same old thing,” he said. “We’re doing a lot of custom work.” White metals, including platinum, are a big hit, said Craig Gruening, owner of Krail Jewelry, 105 N. Main St. Grooms request contemporary metals such as tungsten and titanium. They cost less than gold, he said. The most popular diamonds tend to weigh .5 carat to one carat, and round cuts and princess cuts are the most requested, Gruening said.

The most popular — and least expensive — photo package doesn’t even involve paper. For a little over $1,000, couples may receive unlimited photos burned on a DVD. Scheer said the files are large enough that customers can have prints made anywhere at a later date.

Emanuel said he’s taken numerous requests to remake an old diamond, such as one from a grandmother’s ring.

Scheer said many clients choose this option to save money. When they have more to spend, they’ll order prints.

On rare occasions, brides request sapphires and rubies to accent their rings, Emanuel said.

Posed wedding pictures are disappearing, he said. Posed pictures of the bride and groom, wedding party and family are still a must, but most pictures are shot with a photojournalistic style. Photographers shoot the action as it unfolds, be it the exchanging of the rings or the sharing of wedding cake.

For best results, brides and grooms should allow two to three weeks for production and order of rings, Emanuel said. Three to four weeks is encouraged for customized rings, Gruening said.

The traditional tiered wedding cake has undergone downsizing. More couples prefer smaller cakes or a dessert table to the triple-decker cake, said Heather Linstrom,

co-owner of Linstrom’s Catering, 953 E. Johnson St. They’ll choose a small tiered cake for wedding photos but serve different dishes for dessert.

Both Eden Catering and Linstrom’s Catering can prepare special meals for guests who have food allergies. Vegetarian dishes are available.

Some wedding dinners feature sheet cakes of different flavors. Others serve cupcakes, miniature cheesecakes and éclairs instead of cake, she said.

Customers have options to save money. They may choose to have Eden Catering cook, deliver, serve and clean. Some guests will opt for delivery only, while others just pick up the food and take care of setup and cleanup themselves, Duehring said.

dinner

Reception dinners still typically feature two entrees and two to eight side dishes, said Jeff Duehring, co-owner of Eden Catering, 115 E. Main St., Eden. Appetizers may include stuffed mushroom caps or meatballs. Entrees vary since Eden Catering is part of Eden Meat Market. Selections include fish, chicken, beef, ham or turkey. Eden Catering has prepared everything from sliced beef or turkey with gravy to pig roasts, he said. Potatoes are the most popular side dish, followed by vegetables and salads. Duehring said customers may choose from more than 100 selections on the Eden Catering menu. Couples want the traditional chicken or beef with a twist, said Linstrom. Instead of baked chicken, they’ll order chicken prosciutto or chicken Florentine. For beef, they’ll request a London broil. “Tradition is so important in this area,” she said. “But this generation wants to pull away from the norm and put their own touch on the trends. That’s a great example of old and new working together.”

More couples choose strolling dinners, Linstrom added. The meal is set like a Sunday brunch buffet, with different stations handling meats, pastas, salads and other side dishes. She said Linstrom’s will offer tastings to help couples choose their menu. Eden Catering can cater a wedding quickly if it’s an emergency, but Duehring recommends contacting a caterer six months to a year before the ceremony, especially if it’s a Saturday wedding. When planning weddings, couples should first plan their church or ceremony site, followed by the caterer, Linstrom said. Wedding plans can derail if the church and caterer are not available on the set date.

From the cocktail hour to the dessert table, we strive to make every aspect of your special day perfect. Our commitment too professional service, quality cuisine isine and elegant presentation on is the reason why soo many couples trustt their wedding receptions to us.

Linstrom said couples should consider their finances and focus on what they want in a meal. Don’t think too much about what every guest wants or likes. It’s the bride and groom’s special day; planning it should be fun and memorable, not stressful, she said. “You’ll never please everybody. It’s impossible. Be realistic,” she said. “A wedding should be about joy and happiness. It’s so important to just enjoy the process.” ●

or a cruise trip with limited ports of call, tend to be easier vacations to organize because they don’t require multiple lodging or transportation details. But you might discover that you and your sweetheart can save a little money as you start your new life together and plan a more localized tour. For example, maybe you are both baseball fans. Touring several cities with major league fields and catching a couple home games would make a very memorable honeymoon vacation that you both would enjoy. Here are some tips to help you plan your honeymoon so you’ll have memorable stories to share through your life together: • Pick a destination together. Discuss with your soon-to-be spouse what activities or sights you want to see together. You might want to pick a location where neither of you has traveled previously. Or maybe you can plan your entire honeymoon around an event

that brought the two of you together. • If you plan to change your name once you’re married, make sure you book all your tickets in your maiden name, because you probably won’t have time between the wedding ceremony and the honeymoon to get your official identification cards and passport changed. And with tightened security at airports, you don’t want to be left behind because your ticket name doesn’t match your ID. • Research and plan for what you’ll need to pack. If you’re leaving the country, make sure you have your passport and visa (if needed) ready. The U.S. Department of State provides plenty of information about travel warnings and alerts for different countries based on political uprisings and natural disasters, as well as information on shots needed for different countries. Also, research average temperatures for the time of year you’ll be traveling so you can bring along the proper clothes. You can register your travel

and other travel documents to help with tracking lost baggage or assistance if your flights are canceled or postponed. And if you or your spouse were to get sick or injured while on your vacation, On Call can help you get to the right medical care and back home to recover. plans with the U.S. Department of State to help ensure you are easy to reach should something happen with your family in the United States or if something important is happening in the location where you will be traveling. Visit the State Department at www.travel.state. gov. • No matter if you’re flying overseas or just driving to the other side of the state you live in for your honeymoon, consider investing in medical evacuation and travel assistance memberships. On Call International’s programs offer members help for major and minor mishaps ranging from lost passports

Time will fly by as you plan your wedding and honeymoon, and before you know it, you’ll be packing your bags for a romantic trip with your honey. Follow these tips to help prepare for a safe and fun honeymoon, and enjoy the start to your life together. ●

{ something old, something new }

Modern brides put unique slant on

‘something old, something new’ ARA Content

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something - very unique. To make a wedding both fun and sophisticated, modern brides give the old wedding adage a playful twist. If you’re planning your wedding, or helping someone special plan her own, here are some modern variations on the tradition:

something old:

something borrowed:

Something old represents the bride’s past. Personalize this tradition by incorporating a small memento from you and your fiance’s past together. Did you keep something from one of your favorite dates? Maybe you still have the ticket stub from the first concert you attended together, or the wine cork from your first date.

To inherit luck, tradition says that something borrowed should be from a person who has a happy marriage.

Brides are tucking these small items into their bouquets to bring them good luck. At a special moment during the evening, you can reveal the keepsake to your husband and remember just how far you’ve come as a couple.

something new: Scent creates powerful memories and brides today are taking notice. For your wedding, find a new fragrance that perfectly fits your special moment. For years to come, the fragrance will remind you and your husband of your wedding day. A wedding calls for a memorable scent like twirl by kate spade new york, perfect for this joyous and festive occasion. A fresh floral bouquet mingles with pink watermelon and red currant, while luminous musks and a touch of French macaroon add that wink of surprise that will keep your husband-to-be enamored and your guests intrigued.

Thinking outside the box may mean that your something borrowed isn’t an actual item. Perhaps you want to honor your grandparents on your wedding and “borrow” parts of the vows they said so many years ago. Or maybe your best friend has a marriage philosophy you admire that you can print on the dessert napkins for all guests to enjoy. Feeling musical? Ask your parents what song played during their first dance and surprise them by borrowing it for your own.

something blue: Looking for something fun for your guests to take home as a thank you token? Wrap up blue lollipops and or other blue candies in gift bags with a special note thanking them for being part of your special day. The modern bride is always finding new ways to incorporate tradition into their wedding. Finding something that is personal and meaningful to both you and your husband to be will make your wedding day even more memorable. ●

{ your wedding registry }

Smart couples say ‘I do’

f

to value in wedding registries ARA Content

From custom cakes and invitations, to flowers, linens and finding the perfect dress, today’s brides face a flurry of expenses tied to the big day. Couple those costs with a notso-blushing economy and it’s easy to see why many are paring down their platinum wedding plans and saying “I do” to more budget-friendly options. Whether it’s trimming the guest list or cutting out couture for something more demure, happy couples in 2011 are finding smart ways to curb their dream wedding costs but still throw chic, personalized affairs that won’t break the bank. This reasonable approach is perfect for piecing together the all-important gift registry, too. These essentials will be what take you and your new mate well beyond

the honeymoon, so it’s important to cover all bases. But even this can get costly. According to bridal website The Knot, 88 percent of couples establish a gift registry with lists topping out, on average, at 151 items total. Remember, your guests are feeling the financial crunch, too.

So when you’re setting out to select your shiny-new registry finds, follow these helpful tips from Black & Decker. That way, you’ll be sure to score great items without putting too much strain on your guests’ pocketbooks.

stay practical.

Everyone loves a splurge. That’s part of the fun. But for the majority of guests, pricey presents can quickly add up. Cash crunch or not, family and friends are forced to spend, on average, between $79 to $146 on wedding gifts. And for guests feeling the effects of a slumping economy, this can sometimes make for a significant financial hit. Scannerhappy brides and grooms should remember practical picks,

too, keeping in mind that lower prices don’t necessarily mean having to skimp on high style and function. So it’s always thoughtful to choose useful items that don’t break the budgets of your RSVPs. After all, guests just want to help you start your happily ever after off right. Help them help you ring in the matrimony by picking budget-friendly options that carry style and value across the threshold.

kitchen essentials.

Food for thought: Never ditch the kitchen. A whopping 90 percent of registered couples ask for kitchen appliances and electrics. After all, it’s the heart of the home and the perfect place to stock up on go-to gadgets for culinary crusades with your new spouse. The toaster, for one, is a classic and coffeemakers are key to starting every morning off right. Space-saving starter homes can always use a countertop oven when cooking for two, while blenders are perfect for whipping up smoothies, milkshakes, salsas and dips. There’s no telling what the future may hold. But with

brand-new kitchen appliances, you’ll at least be covered for breakfast, lunch and dinner for two-and any new additions that may come up along the way.

newfound newlywed features.

Marriage may not always be easy. But your new appliances can be. And since home is where the heart is with your better half, register for products touting the latest technology and features to at least help your cohabitation run smoothly. Irons, for one, are anything but flat these days as cordreeling features make for easy storage and vertical steaming capabilities help you skip the ironing board and knock out wrinkles right off the hangar. Toasters have gone digital, blenders come with to-die-for die-cast stands and the latest coffeemakers, like those from Black & Decker, are touting Sneak-A-Cup technology (for quick cups on the go), plus the always-practical programmable brew settings for no-fuss his and hers cups so you can greet the dawn effortlessly each day. So tie the knot. Just let high-functioning features help free up your time together. Visit www.blackanddeckerappliances.com for more information on smart solutions for registry essentials. ●

{ money management }

Heading down

the aisle? Money management advice for the soon-to-be-married ARA Content

e

Money, debt and credit, however, should never be on that list of taboo topics for couples preparing to wed.

Every couple planning a wedding knows that there are some argument-causing topics they just won’t discuss. Maybe he’ll leave the choice of wedding colors up to her, and she, in turn, won’t comment on his best man’s reputation. And neither will discuss the foibles of their future in-laws.

CreditRepor t.com make it easy to get the information you need to understand your credit score and how it works. Armed with this knowledge, the two of you can make informed financial decisions.

Money, debt and credit, however, should never be on that list of taboo topics for couples preparing to wed. In fact, financial experts and marriage counselors agree that honest, open communication about money matters is an essential element of a successful marriage.

Knowing how much debt each of you has, what shape your credit reports are in and how potential lenders might score your creditworthiness as a couple can help you make informed decisions about your financial future together.

Hopefully, if you’re about to exchange vows, you have at least a passing idea of each other’s personal finances - and personal style when it comes to managing important issues like credit and savings. But before you finalize the guest list and decide on a honeymoon destination, you should discuss your current individual financial statuses, and how you’ll manage credit as a married couple in the future.

full disclosure

You may not see the romance in a credit report, but sharing your credit standing with your future spouse is an admirable - and necessary - gesture of commitment. Plus, it’s an essential step toward planning your future financial course together, especially if you’ll be buying a house or car, or funding an education for one of you. Websites like 18

agree on a style...

... Or agree to disagree within reason. Two people can be so compatible they share the same taste in food, music and clothing styles - and still disagree on spending and saving habits. Marriage is about compromise and this is one area where one individual can’t have it all his or her own way. If one of you is a spendthrift who likes to account for every penny out of his paycheck each month, while the other has no idea how much her morning cup of Joe costs, you’ll need to meet somewhere in the middle. Discuss how you’ll keep track of spending and how much you’ll save each month.

plan ahead

Often, a couple’s future spending goals rely on how well

Brides

|  Sunday, June 19, 2011  |  www.fdlreporter.com

they manage their credit. You probably discussed where you’ll live after you’re married, and it’s likely the idea of buying a house is on your minds either soon or several years down the road.

Planning how you’ll manage credit in the early days of your marriage can help you work toward your mutual spending and saving goals. Monitoring your credit may make sense. In addition to alerting you to key changes in your credit reports and scores, credit monitoring sites like CreditReport.com can provide tips and tools to help you understand credit and keep track of your scores. Better understanding your credit can make you better able to work toward your mutual financial objectives.

keep perspective

While money matters and co-managing your finances is important in a marriage, it’s not the only thing that is. Financial management experts advise newlyweds to discuss finances, but put your relationship first. When money issues arise - and they do for most married couples - keep in mind that your approach to handling them needs to be a team effort. After all, you didn’t get married for the money, you did it for love. Managing your money as a team can help ensure you have more time to think about what’s really important - each other. ●
