Peers, friends

South’s Tutas, North’s Stengel elite pass-catchers

Jake Stengel rolled up in his black pickup truck, stuck his head out the window and hollered loudly, “Riiiiiley!” Pete Riley Tutas, standing nearby, laughed. Stengel got out of his ride and the two exchanged an enthuSports siastic editor handshake. These sensational high school wide receivers got together for a photo shoot earlier this week, and though they’re fierce rivals on the football field

Barth

(and basketball court), they’re anything but adversaries off it. “He’s like a brother to me,” Tutas said of Stengel before the latter arrived. Stengel is Sheboygan North’s 6-4, 190-pound pass-catching machine. Tutas is Sheboygan South’s 6-2, 200-pound bigplay threat. What a coincidence that two of the best wideouts in city history are playing on opposite ends of town at this identical point in time. Given all that’s at stake, one might think there’s a window for animosity between these dynamic athletes. After all, not only are they trying to help their respective teams seize a precious playoff spot in a brutal league, they’re also competing for

individual conference honors, city bragging rights and maybe even college scholarships. Refreshingly, though, these two young men embody what a classy rivalry should be, and they reflect the type of relationships sport at its best can nurture. They’re fast friends, literally and figuratively. They even went to more than half-a-dozen college camps together this summer. When someone suggested they go to the same college, they both smiled wide. Last year, their numbers were similar. Tutas had 24 catches for 556 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging a jaw-dropping 23.2 yards per catch. And Stengel had 26 catches for 514

yards and five scores, averaging 19.8 yards per catch. The North standout was second-team All-Fox River Classic Conference. The South standout was honorable mention. In last year’s NorthSouth game, Tutas had three catches for 113 yards, including a 90-yard touchdown down the right sideline. Stengel had three catches for 52 yards, but the Golden Raiders won the game. They’ll meet again on the final Thursday of the regular season. They’ll battle hard and do everything they can to win and terrorize the opposing secondary. And then, when it’s over, no matter the outcome, they’ll share a hug. They get it like that.

Newfound confidence

Players to watch

BY PETE BARTH

Sheboygan Press staff

Ed Thompson has seen a lot of Sheboygan North football games over the years. A loyal assistant since 1998, Thompson served under three Golden Raiders head coaches — Greg Enz, Dean Tutas and Steve Brickson — in 12 seasons. During that time, Thompson saw it all, from a conference championship (1999) to a winless season (2007) and everything in between. Now it’s Thompson’s turn to run the show. He’s the interim head coach for this season, after which athletic director Dan Stengel has said he will re-open the position. That doesn’t seem to bother Thompson, who’s refreshingly humble and truly seems to be in this coaching thing for the kids. “I never had aspirations of being a head coach,” he said. “The way things happened (Steve Brickson resigned after losing his teaching position just before summer), we all wanted the least disruptive thing. This made sense.” Thompson said he has tremendous confidence in a strong group of assistant coaches on a staff that includes newcomer Wade Rickmeier, who’s running special teams and the offensive line. Rickmeier was head coach at Valders for 13 years, and guided the Vikings to eight straight playoff appearances from 1999-2006. The Raiders have eight returning starters on offense and four on defense from last year’s 3-6 team, and Thompson sounds optimistic. “With the work these players have put in, honestly, and I’m not just saying this because I’m running things now, I’ve never seen a group of players work this hard,” Thompson said. “If they can rise up emotionally, if they have that fire, enthusiasm and emotion it takes, they will be in every game, and that’s all you can ask.” One of North’s adopted slogans this season is, “Champions do something extra.” Another is, “1-and-0,” as in, try to go 1-0 every week rather than focusing on long-term goals like the

Prospects by position Offense (Wing-T)

Sheboygan North aims for its first trip to the WIAA postseason since 2006. Photo by Bruce Halmo/The Sheboygan Press playoffs. Thompson said players started lifting hard around the Christmas break and never stopped. They’ve done speed and plyometric work (training for explosive movements) on the track, too. “The weight-lifting attendance this summer was the best we’ve had in 15 years,” Thompson said. “One day, we had more than 100 kids.” Leading North’s Wing-T offense is three-year starting senior quarterback Derek Van Calligan, a fleet-footed, tough kid who in the past two years has often been on the run due to inconsistent blocking in front of him. Thompson said Van Calligan’s passing has improved dramatically since last year, and that’s particularly bad news for opponents, given that senior receiver Jake Stengel could be a major-college recruit. At 6-4 and 190 pounds, with great hands and good speed, Stengel is a nightmare for secondaries. Reed Konter and Kevan Rivera bring experience to the running back positions, which also includes top prospect Danny Weber, a com-

pact 5-7, 173-pound junior with great burst and power. Speedy Naji Allen will serve as a wingback/receiver hybrid, going in motion regularly and creating problems in space. Thompson said the offensive line is improved, with players like Fletcher Bayens (255 pounds) and Andy LeBeau (280) providing size and experience. Tight end Lucas McKnight will be one of the few players starting both ways (he’s also an outside linebacker) with LeBeau likely the other. Defensively, the Raiders will shift to a 3-3-5, or 3-5. Anchoring the line is senior three-year varsity player Nick Gottowski, a 5-10, 265pounder who Thompson said is “like a man up there,” and LeBeau, among others. Linebacker, inside and outside, is a position of strength, with Anthony Caelwaerts and Andrew Roelse among the players on a strong unit that includes promising youngsters like sophomore Aaron Rothwell. Among the backs is Deon Madden, a senior who helped North’s 1,600 relay get to State last spring.

Recipe for excitement

Players to watch

BY PETE BARTH

Sheboygan Press staff

For the second time in eight years, there will be no junior varsity football team at Sheboygan South, a Division 1 school with nearly 1,400 students. Certainly, this is not an ideal scenario for sixth-year head coach Chris Hein, but given the numbers he’s working with, he felt it was the only decision. “We didn’t have a choice,” he said. “We didn’t think it was fair to the kids (to try to field a team with minimal sophomore numbers).” The good news is, South will have a freshman team, and the 36 players from that class are the most in a few years. “We’ll continue to work with the youth program and try to get better (at drawing players into the program), and get kids excited about playing football,” said Hein. “Football is such a great sport. It builds so much character. We’ve got to get more kids involved, and we’ll keep plugging away. I’ll let other people decide if (the low numbers) reflects poorly upon our program.” Back in 2003, a similar numbers crunch led to the suspension of the JV team. The next year, South went 11-1 and stormed through the old Fox River Valley Conference, so not having a JV team in a given year is not necessarily devastating. Yet Hein realizes his program is at a crossroads, especially given the brutality of the Fox River Classic Conference Sheboygan’s two public schools now play in. “When you look at the last three years, we’re obviously not heading in the right direction when you look at our record,” said Hein, whose Redwings are 9-18 overall and 7-16 in FRCC play in that stretch. “But we have to put it in perspective. We’re 8-7 against our old conference teams and 1-11 against the new conference teams. Our city is struggling to rise up to the level of those teams. We’ve got to pick it up a notch from where we were in the old FRVC.”

Prospects by position Sheboygan South hasn’t had a winning season since 2004. Photo by Bruce Halmo/The Sheboygan Press Recent struggles aside, Hein’s voice reflects genuine excitement about this year’s team, which features tremendous experience and some elite-level skill position standouts. Nine players who started on defense and five who started on offense return. “I’m extremely confident that if we stay healthy, we will be a very competitive team, and a team fans are going to like to watch,” Hein said. Quarterback Ethan Berlin and receiver Riley Tutas are the epitome of athleticism. Berlin, quickfooted and accurate, is a true dual threat, a running back with an arm and the perfect triggerman for Hein’s spread “Wildcat” look. Berlin, who started four games last season, will execute everything from rollouts to read/midline options. He’ll operate primarily out of the shotgun. In Tutas, Berlin has a true gamebreaker at his disposal, an all-conference player who averaged a stunning 23.2 yards per catch last season. “We don’t have the personnel to line up and mash people, so we’ll do what suits us best,” Hein said of his offense. “Why try to win a fistfight when you should be trying to win a track meet?” Other promising athletes in-

clude baseball star Josh Gruenke, a first-year football player who has looked good at tailback; receiver Thomas Murray and tight end Brady Callahan. The offensive line is fairly seasoned, with returnees Eric Morgan and James Lanser leading the way. Defensively, Hein has returned to the 4-3 look South embraced before experimenting with 3-4 and 45 tweaks the last couple of years. All three starting linebackers return, including three-year starting weakside ’backer Lanser and Nick Hartmann. Ashton Hoffmann and Abe Yang are among the key returnees up front, and Tutas is a safety. Borrowing a tradition from Nebraska, Hein is giving practice “blackshirts” to the top defensive players. “I think our mood is great right now,” he said. “We’ve talked a lot more about the principles we believe in and our goals than we ever have. The last two years haven’t been good. We’re all aware of that, but in the end, it doesn’t matter. This isn’t last year’s team, it’s this year’s team. Replacing graduated standouts from the previous year is a part of life for every high school football coach. But at Plymouth, the void left by the departure of multi-year starters Jon Criter, Ian Murray and Ryan Schmitz is particularly tough to fill. “Those three guys were really the foundation of our program the last couple of years,” said Dan Knaus, who’s entering his fourth season as head coach. “It’s like I’ve told some people, if we’re running a business, we’ve lost our CEOs. We still have a lot of blue-collar workers, but we’ve lost the management of the company. We’ve got some key pieces back, but we’ve lost a big part of our upper tier.” In quarterback Criter, linebacker/fullback Murray and lineman Schmitz, the Panthers lost the Eastern Wisconsin Conference offensive MVP, its defensive MVP and its first-team allleague center, respectively. Murray and Schmitz played in the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-Star Game. Talk about your triple crown of graduation hits. But while Knaus doesn’t sugarcoat the loss of those great players and tremendous team leaders, he also pushes his program forward, determined not to let it backslide after last season’s undefeated run through the EWC and 9-2 season. “As a head coach, my goal is that we’re playing at the level where we are competing for a conference title every year,” Knaus said. “That means we have targets on our backs, but Homestead and Arrowhead have targets, too. If you get kids out like we have, when you have the luxury of having good competition at all positions and great practices, you never want to sell

Plymouth will look to win back-to-back Eastern Wisconsin Conference titles for the first time since 2003-04. Photo by Bruce Halmo/The Sheboygan Press yourselves short.” Indeed, there are 101 players in Plymouth’s healthy program. One of those is tailback Hayden Potts, a three-year starter who’s big enough (190 pounds), fast enough and tough enough to have a truly memorable season. Last year, Potts rushed for 1,202 yards and 13 touchdowns, and Knaus said he’s bigger and stronger than he was as a junior. “He will definitely be our centerpiece athlete, but all great players are surrounded by quality teammates who help make them great players,” Knaus said. “We’re only as good as the weakest man on the ship. (Potts) has the ability and work ethic to be a special player, but we don’t want to be one-dimensional.” Replacing Criter at quarterback is stocky and tough Mitch Unger, who at 6-0 and 190 pounds loves to run through contact. When Plymouth operates out of its shotgun, which it will about 40 percent of the time, Unger will do much more running than Criter (who was an ex-

cellent passer) did. Think Florida and Tim Tebow. “Unger is going to play a big role,” Knaus said of last year’s all-conference receiver. “I see him as an 800-800 guy, with 800 passing yards and 800 on the ground.” For Potts and Unger to run wild, the blocking will have to be solid. Fullbacks Brock Reichardt and Geno Kiela will step in for Murray and returning starting linemen Austin Meyer and Brad Hanson and tight end Alex Grahn lead the way up front. Ricardo Lee steps in at center for Schmitz, and his job is important because he not only has to long snap cleanly, he has to lead the run game through the middle. In all, Plymouth returns five players with starting experience on offense and four on defense. All three down linemen and all three inside linebackers in Plymouth’s 3-5 must be replaced. Sawyer Bruggink, the strongest player on the team, will play a key role at linebacker.

Looking to ‘flex’ muscle

Players to watch

BY PETE BARTH

Sheboygan Press staff

Michael Nikson enters his fourth season as Sheboygan Falls’ head football coach with a 13-14 overall record and no playoff appearances. At many communities, a football program that hovers around .500 each year and plays hard wouldn’t be cause for hand-wringing. But at Falls, where the Falcons never had a losing season in 26 years under Dan Juedes and made annual treks to the postseason, some fans are restless. Tradition can be a doubleedged sword, after all. To his credit, Nikson soldiers on in upbeat fashion, working to help his players succeed — on and off the field. Yes, he wants to win. But he says that’s not his primary reason for coaching. And the positive tone of his voice indicates an unshakable optimism. “You have to focus on the important things,” said Nikson, who is one of the nice guys in the coaching fraternity. “If you’re doing athletics just for winning, you’re missing the big picture. We’re trying to get kids to participate, to become great citizens, great human beings and contribute to something bigger than themselves. The kids in this program are getting it. The kids make it worth it. If I was coaching for adults, I wouldn’t be there. To see the kids develop is great. And of course, we’re still trying our best to be competitive on the field.” This year, the Falcons are going to a new offense, scrapping the shotgun spread and zone blocking that just didn’t click consistently over the past few years. Falls will now run out of the double-wing “flexbone,” which college football fans will recognize if they’ve watched Air Force play on TV. Sheboygan North rode the scheme to a conference title in 1999 under former coach Greg Enz. It’s an option-based attack featuring a fullback and two wingbacks. “We’re going to try to use our athleticism to the best of our ability,” said Nikson, who has not been blessed with overall size on the line

Sheboygan Falls seeks its first postseason berth since 2006. Photo by Gary C. Klein/The Sheboygan Press since he took over at Falls. “We’re small, but we have a bunch of track kids. We’re going to try to get them running downhill.” Four starters return on offense, including linemen Trevor Berceau and Sean Mueller. Returning wingbacks/running backs Nick Roelse and Andy Ansay bring great athleticism to that position. Alex Grabowski, a track standout in the spring, is another athletic option on offense. Quarterback Jason Fenner is another athletic piece of what Nikson hopes will be a quick-strike offense. “I think our backfield should be really good,” he said. “All track athletes. Nick Roelse second-team allconference on both sides of the ball. Ansay is a great sprinter, and Grabowski is great in the 400. (Wingback) Matt Hasler is a threesport athlete. These guys could all be difference-makers. If we can get them a seam, it should be fun to watch.” Defensively, Falls will play a 3-4 and will send linebackers from various angles to try to be disruptive.

“Oh, gosh yeah, we’re looking to bring pressure every play,” Nikson said. Roelse and Cole Heili return at linebacker and Hasler, Ansay, Fenner and Grabowski patrol the secondary. Berceau and Mueller lead the way up front. Due to unusually small junior and sophomore classes, Nikson said the Falcons’ JV team will play on Monday nights so that those youngsters who play on Fridays will get more of a break. “The good thing is we’ve got 35 or 36 freshmen, a real nice class coming up,” Nikson said. Back to the present, the Falcons will hope to parlay their athleticism into that elusive playoff berth. “That’s a goal we always have,” Nikson said of the postseason. “But we just have to play within ourselves and take it week by week. We will do the best we can for the kids we have and do our best to put them in a winning situation. My focus is on giving these kids the best experience they can have playing high school football.”

One more win. That’s all the Kiel football team was looking for last year. One more win meant the Raiders would have made the WIAA Division 4 playoffs. A rough three-game slide in the middle of the season left Kiel playing from behind in the latter part of the season, and despite winning three of its last four, Kiel sat at home when the playoffs started. This year, the Kiel players are determined to be the first Raiders team since 2006 to still be playing in late October. Second-year coach Chris Bennin said what will tip the scales in favor of the Raiders will be the team’s overall health. “That’s the most important thing for us, especially on the offensive line,” said Bennin. “We’re trying to stress that right now, staying healthy in our camps and throughout the season.” The injury bug bit the Raiders hard last season — on the line and at quarterback. Those injuries left Kiel scrambling midway through the season to get the pieces back in place to make a playoff push. After missing the playoffs, however, the Kiel coaching staff has placed a greater emphasis on the weight room with the Raider players as a means of avoiding those injuries. “We stayed in the weight room more this offseason, not so much for the strength but for the durability,” Bennin said. “A lot of our key guys, especially on the line, went down last year. Our quarterback went down last year, and that set us back tremendously. “It is our goal to have these kids play all season long. That’s when we can really reap the benefits of what we’ve done in the offseason.” If the offensive line can stay healthy, Bennin feels that unit

Kiel earned its first regular-season winning record since 2006 last year. Photo by Josh Salm/Gannett Wisconsin Media can be the strong point for the Raiders this season. Kiel is relying on three possible all-conference candidates in senior center Nate Sell, senior tackle Kyle Preissner and junior tackle Dustin Salm that Bennin is building around. “We have high expectations in our O-line,” Bennin said. “One of our top goals is to solidify that line. We need a couple kids to step up on the line. That will determine how well we will do this season.” Sell agrees. “We have a pretty good offensive line put together,” Sell said. “We have a lot of depth. We’re hitting pretty good. We’ll be a pretty aggressive offensive line this year.” That offensive line will be trying to protect junior quarterback Geddy Nordby and open holes

for senior fullback Derek Fritsch. Defensively, Bennin has spent time with the team this offseason working on making the Raiders a faster unit after seeing the team struggle to get to the ball at times last season. That added agility has made the Raiders a faster team. Add that to better health along the line and a hunger from missing the playoffs last year, and Kiel looks to be a dangerous team in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference. “We were hoping to make the playoffs last year,” senior wide receiver Isaiah Herzog said. “By just missing it by one game, maybe there will be that push to want to get there this year. It’s kind of a little bit of a chip on our shoulder.” Josh Salm writes for the Manitowoc Herald Times Reporter

Time to be great

Players to watch

BY MICHAEL ROGERS

Gannett Wisconsin Media

The 2009 season was another good one for the New Holstein High School football team. Not great, certainly not bad, but good. It’s become almost customary for the Huskies to challenge for that top spot in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference, only to fall short. New Holstein went 6-3 during the regular season and pounded Mayville 40-0 in the first round of the playoffs — clinching a third straight seven-win season — before bowing out to eventual state champion Big Foot 21-7 in the second round. So close to upsetting the best team in the state, but again, just another good performance. “We still lost,” senior Jake Entringer said. “I went down to Madison to watch them play and they killed Kewaunee. It’s frustrating because we know as well as anybody we could have been there. It was a momentum booster (coming into this season) because they were state champs, but we have to bring that every week.” What could make the difference this time around? Well, the Huskies have something great. The Huskies’ backfield contains two three-year starters who are considered among the best in the state at their position by wissports.net. Cody Thede (6-1, 235), a wellbuilt, bruising fullback, ran for 687 yards, and Entringer (5-10, 200) earned first-team all-conference honors for a second consecutive season by running for 776 yards. Both ran for 10 touchdowns and both are back to make things difficult for opposing defensive coordinators. “They’re both big and strong,” New Holstein’s co-coach Greg Fictum said. “They’re very active in the weight room, and their strength is their strength.

New Holstein has won seven or more games for three straight seasons. Photo by Justin Connaher/Gannett Wisconsin Media Thede’s got some good explosion. Jake runs the (heck) out of the ball. He probably won’t be a surprise to anybody.” The lone skill position that could present a problem is at quarterback. Chris Lefeber started as a junior and senior before graduating and leaving the position to senior Cade Lefeber and junior Sam Cash. They’re lucky enough to have reliable targets in tight end Brett Boettcher (6-6, 200), whose 345 yards were the fourthmost in the league last season, and wide receiver Tyler Zipperer, who Fictum says has great hands. But how good the skill position players are will come down, as usual, to the offensive line. Last season, New Holstein replaced all five starters, and the replacements did a credible job. This season, the Huskies will have three new starters. Travis Steffen (5-10, 250) started most of his junior season and will be a captain. Junior Chris Greuel (6-0, 190) and senior Aaron Sherry (6-2, 270) both

started parts of last season and are expected to start this season. “There’s a lot of high expectations,” Thede said. “We’re going to run hard and hit our holes, but we’ll go as far as the line takes us.” It shouldn’t be a surprise, then, that the line is the biggest unknown on defense. Steffen will anchor that group, while defensive coach Chuck Lefeber said Greg Parker (6-1, 275) would likely play a big part, but he still needed two other players. There is experience in the linebacking corps, the strength of the team, led by Thede. “Thede’s going to be leading the pack,” Entringer said. “He should have a breakout season. He’s got a nose for the ball.” After being second-team allconference last season, Zipperer leads the secondary, which coaches and players expect to be solid. “We have all the talent in the world,” Thede said. “We just have to put it together.” Michael Rogers writes for the Fond du Lac Reporter

Statistically speaking, Howards Grove had an impressive 2009 season, with a 1,000-yard feature back (Collin Horness), a 1,000-yard passer (Eric Dickmyer) and a receiver with 50 catches and more than 800 yards (Mike Verfuerth). Unfortunately for the Tigers, those big-time individual numbers didn’t quite translate into the kind of team success head coach Dave Schmid was hoping for. Yes, there were flashes of greatness, but the end result was a 4-6 final record — the Tigers’ first losing season since Schmid’s first year (2002). Those three talented players graduated, and Schmid said the 2010 edition of the Tigers is lacking that kind of overall star power. He’s hoping this team can overcome that, band together and reach a level of overall chemistry last year’s talented team just didn’t quite find. “I think we’re going to have a pretty unified team this year,” said Schmid, now in his ninth year at Howards. “I don’t know that I have any superstars, but when you have superstars, it tends to divide a team a little bit. We have a lot of good kids, average kids who are hard workers and on the same page, and they treat each other that way. There’s a closeness.” Howards, which returns five players with starting experience, has just eight seniors on the roster and only about four of them will play regularly. That means lots of promising young players battled for spots during camp. Three sophomores will play a lot, and the junior class is strong. Schmid said Howards’ team speed will be above average, and senior receiver/defensive end Matt Wleklinski could be the fastest player in the area. He’ll be an enticing target for new starting quarterback Noah Steines (who led the JV team last year). Another intriguing athlete in the Pro-I offense is junior Ashton Holzman, a former lineman who has been moved to tight end. At 6-5,

Howards Grove had its first losing season since 2002 last year, but qualified for the playoffs for a seventh straight time. Photo by Bruce Halmo/The Sheboygan Press 230 pounds, Holzman has a college tight end body and good enough hands from playing first base in the summer that he could be a major weapon in the pass game. One luxury Schmid has enjoyed the past several years has been workhorse feature backs, from Elliot Thieleke to Horness. The coach is still sorting out the candidates at running back. Max Cohen will get a long look and another candidate is fulltime soccer player Duston Rabe, a good athlete who offered to expand his role beyond kicker. Fullback Brevin Scholten shows good potential for a sophomore. “We’re going to start the season really wanting and trying to run the ball,” Schmid said. “Leads, toss, like we’ve done, and we’ll probably do more option than we have the past couple of years. Dickmyer was a good athlete; I just don’t think I worked the option enough last year. Steines is a pretty good athlete, and

when you’re inexperienced on the offensive line, the option can be a good equalizer.” There’s some size up front, but depth is a concern, as eight to 10 players will start both ways, and just 14 players will share a large percentage of the snaps. Defensively, Howards will run a 5-3. Holzman and Wleklinski should be tough up front, and Schmid said the defense was ahead of the offense going into tonight’s opener. Schmid said even given the team’s inexperience, finishing better than .500 in conference play and making the postseason is a realistic goal. Considering the youth on this varsity roster and additional strong sophomores on the JV team, 2011 could be special. But Schmid plans to enjoy the personality of this team. “They work extremely hard,” he said. “And they’re very, very selfless.”

Five plays. That’s how many Oostburg starts a season with in its base series, expanding from there but only after the Flying Dutchmen can run those core full-house Wing-T staples to the satisfaction of fifth-year head coach Scott Ring. “The players laugh at me, because they know exactly what plays we’re running the first day of camp,” said Ring, 29, a young man but an old soul when it comes to football philosophy. “If you want to win, you have to run the ball. Yes, the kids still like it when I tweak the formations a little bit, put in a few extra things. They’re kids. But we basically go off a five-play series and branch out from there. I don’t like to move on to different things until we’re doing our few (base) plays perfectly. And like I tell them, we’re never going to be perfect.” Perfect? No. Efficient? Yes. Successful? Absolutely. Ring has molded the Flying Dutchmen in his image, and he’s got the program humming. Oostburg went 9-2 last season and is 16-4 in Central Lakeshore Conference play over the past three years. The Dutch lost some great players to graduation last year, including the Menzel brothers (Luke and Jake, who combined for more than 2,000 yards rushing) and two-way lineman Sam Van Tatenhove (who was a beast at 290-plus pounds). But the Dutch return five starters on each side of the ball, and Ring said the offseason work ethic and overall attitude of this year’s team makes him smile. He thinks this is his fastest team — especially on defense. Ring will have seven or eight two-way starters. While some coaches strive to two-platoon as

Last season, Oostburg went 0-2 against Cedar Grove-Belgium and 9-0 against everyone else. Photo by Gary C. Klein/The Sheboygan Press much as possible, Ring believes in using his best players the whole game. He proudly calls it “Ironman Football.” That said, he’s thrilled with the depth on the line. He’s threedeep at tackle and loved the competition during preseason camp. Three solid starters up front return in Brant Wilterdink, Zach Brill and Ray Wittneben. Given Ring’s run-first approach, great backs are important, and though it will be difficult to replace Luke Menzel and his 1,500 yards and 27 touchdowns, Oostburg has a willing, eager and talented candidate in senior Dustin Veldboom. “He has a lot of ambition, and he worked his tail off this summer, like a lot of our guys did,” Ring said. “He wants to be that guy. He wants to carry that weight on his shoulders.” The new starting quarterback is Mike Keller, an athletic 6-4, 175-pound senior basketball

standout who’s gained about 20 pounds of muscle. “He has been really impressive,” Ring said. “He has worked on his size and speed, and gotten a lot faster. He’s a good rollout passer and we plan to use him like a fourth running back.” Keller and speedy running back/cornerback Alex Stecker lead a strong secondary, with Veldboom and Sam Schouten keying the linebackers. Those four players are the fastest on the team. “Things just feel comfortable here right now,” Ring said of his program. “It feels like everyone is on the same page, that we’re all following the same game plan. Reloading challenge

Players to watch

BY PETE BARTH

Sheboygan Press staff

If ever there was a year Cedar Grove-Belgium’s surging football program might hiccup, sputter or at least skip a tiny beat, this would appear to be it. After all, the Rockets graduated nine starters on each side of the ball, including several multi-year standouts who brought not only talent, but great leadership to the practice field every day — not to mention steely intensity every Friday night. But this thriving Rockets program doesn’t flame out, it refuels, so if you’re looking for a one-year hiatus from its dominant ways, you might be disappointed. “All good things do come to an end, but hopefully not any time soon for us,” said Cedar Grove head coach Chris Zablocki, who has an all-time high of 60 boys in his program. “These players want to be just as successful as the previous teams here have been. They take a lot of pride in wearing ‘Rockets’ on their chest.” Gone are multi-year starting linemen Wayne Paulus, Aaron Bley, Tyler Weavers and Nate Drewry, not to mention leather-tough linebacker/running back stalwarts Nic Vrubley and Spencer Jacque, among many others. Athletic twoway senior starter Tyler Garcia (a receiver and defensive back) decided to focus on wrestling this year and is not playing. Add to that the fact that there have been a couple of injuries in practice this year, and the deck seems a bit stacked against the Rockets. But while Zablocki acknowledges there will be a slew of varsity newcomers on the field tonight against state power Ripon, he concedes nothing, and praises his youngsters for their work ethic, desire and physical talent. He said the Rockets’ JV program won conference last year, and as eighthgraders, they finished second in the ultra-competitive American Youth Football League (which includes state high school power-

Cedar Grove-Belgium hasn’t lost a regular season game in two seasons. Photo by Bruce Halmo/The Sheboygan Press houses like Mequon Homestead). “It’s going to be up to the kids,” Zablocki said of how good this team, which has only six seniors, can be. “The talent is there, that’s not even in question. They have worked hard in the weight room. The strength, quickness, mobility, all of those things are there. We did lose great leadership, and I wondered about that, but that question has been answered. Players have stepped up and become leaders after learning from the players of the past. It will all come down to working together as a team.” No area program has been as powerful as Cedar Grove over the past several seasons. Since 2004, the Rockets are 35-5 in the Central Lakeshore Conference. The last two seasons, Cedar Grove took it to another level, going 24-2 overall and 14-0 in CLC play with an appearance at State in 2008 and a state quarterfinal appearance last fall. Returning starter Chris Peszko, a 6-0, 223-pound junior, will play both tight end and defensive end.

Offensive left tackle Andy Van Ess returns as does junior defensive back Nick Peterson. After that, there are some players who started sporadically, but most positions featured spirited competition between the newcomers. Piloting the Rockets’ Pro-I will be two-year starting JV quarterback T.J. Obbink. A great run game is always important to Zablocki, and some talented prospects such as Hunter Buechler and Alex Giles have shown things in practice. Cedar Grove’s 4-4 defense has been the cornerstone to its success, and Zablocki likes what he sees in that unit. Darren Koopman started some last year and will be part of what should be an outstanding linebacker corps. Junior Jake Weyker has some experience at defensive end. “We had moments in practice when we didn’t see (the required intensity) and that’s my job to fix that,” Zablocki said. “But lately, the defense has been very intense. All of the players on this team have waited their turn. They’re hungry.”

It’s easy to become jaded by big-business football, whether it’s millionaire NFL slacker Albert Haynesworth in Washington or USC’s shady behavior on the college scene. But there are plenty of places where the game is still played purely out of love, places like Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah. The Resorters haven’t had an overall winning record since 1998. Year after year, the tinyschool program hangs by a thread, seemingly a handful of injuries or quitters away from forfeiture. In 2006, the school could not field a team due to low numbers. Once again this season, Elkhart is thread-bare when it comes to depth. With 12 seniors, Random Lake is a relatively mature team. With a freshman and two sophomores starting on the allimportant offensive line, Random Lake is a pretty young team, too. How that experience and youth blend together will go a long way toward determining how this season turns out for the Rams. “It’s a pretty big senior class, but we’ve got a lot of positions to fill,” said longtime coach Chris Bichler. “This year going in, I was kind of leery of what we were going to have, but the kids came out and really showed me something with their work ethic and attitude. The seniors have re-energized me, and I’m excited.” Bichler, the Rams’ head coach from 1993-1998 and then again from 2004 to now, has never hesitated to start the best players regardless of age during his two six-year head coaching stints. “They’ve got to be physically ready for it, and if we start them young, we think they are,” Bichler said. “Mentally as well, of course, and I think (the underclassmen starting this year) are. I like it too, because you get them for more than one year, which makes it easier to build consistency. But it still comes down to playing the best players, the ones who are executing the best. We’re going to start them.” Bichler is excited about the potential of freshman offensive lineman Reed Anklam, a 6-1, 250-pounder who brings great physicality to the equation, especially given his youth. Sophomores Mitch Jentges and Willy Rosso are also slated to start on the offensive line. “It still all starts up front,” Bichler said. “We’ve got some pretty good skill players at the running back spots, but still

The offensive line is so important, and how quickly ours jells and learns the scheme will be a big indicator of how we do. I really like that the kids have come to work hard.” Dual threat quarterback Mason Anklam graduated. Senior Max Laumann will start tonight, with sophomore Brady Schmidt a possible option for playing time as the season progresses. With Laumann at quarterback, it does take him out of a defensive end spot he was solid at for two seasons. Bichler, more than most smallschool coaches, believes strongly in the two-platoon system. He goes into every season hoping for 22 starters, though he realizes that’s not realistic most years. This season, four or five players will start both ways, including running back/linebacker Brett Weiand; Laumann at defensive end and tight end when he’s not at quarter-

back; safety/receiver Dan Pohl; two-way lineman Brady Ehlen and Jake Schwan or Ben Bahr at linebacker and fullback. “I’m not going to change my philosophy (about two-platooning),” Bichler said. “Players (who two-platoon) get to focus on their one position. I understand and respect coaches who believe in playing lots of twoway starters, but I’m just not one of them. In practice, I like to have my No. 1 offense go up against my No. 1 defense.” Bichler’s teams usually have a strong run game. Last year, Weiand and Justin Lunde got valuable experience and both will get plenty of chances to emerge early as the primary ball-carrier. Random Lake returns about six players on offense and defense with starting experience. There are three starters on the offensive line, which will help ease the transition for the youngsters who will join them.

Going old school

New coach, no quarterback. Those are the two most intriguing storylines for this year’s Ozaukee football team. First-year head coach Jim Lippe is coming back to his alma mater, and he has put a unique stamp on the program right away by employing the old-school Princeton single wing offense. “Yes, we’re going to play without a quarterback,” Lippe said with a chuckle. “I hate to use the word ‘gimmicky.’ … we’re just going to be a little old-fashioned in our scheming. It can be really exciting and tough to defend.” The offense, run nationwide six, seven decades ago, does not employ a quarterback. Instead, three backs line up behind center and all can receive direct shotgun snaps. Whoever takes a snap can run or pass. In addition, there’s a wingback in motion who can also take a snap and even run tight “Jet” series reverses. A team in Menominee, Mich., coached by state legend Ken Hofer, has dominated with the single wing for decades. “It’s a good offense when you don’t have the big powerhouse tackles and guards,” Lippe said. “My offensive coordinator, Rick Hughes; he and I will always try to come up with schemes that meet our personnel.” Hughes, who coached Ozaukee in the early 1990s, has run a version of the single wing in a local youth league with great success. Lippe, who played offensive guard on scholarship at Western Michigan after graduating from Ozaukee in 1982, served as a defensive coordinator in that same youth league last fall and enjoyed coaching. He takes over at Ozaukee for Lee Baldwin, who went 35-47 in nine years. Lippe will strive to bring a multi-layered approach to the position. He said he plans to be involved from the grassroots level on up, making sure the youth

Klein/The Sheboygan Press league’s 5th-graders are connected to the varsity program and that the entire community rallies around Warriors football. Back to the single wing, the Warriors will use an unbalanced line with a fullback, a halfback and a blocking back. There is no feature back per se, because the three parts are interchangeable, but Lippe loves the big-play potential of senior Jason Gensrick, and has also been impressed with Devon Linemeyer, among others. There are no wide receivers, but the two base tight ends can flank out wide. “The way we sold this offense to the kids was, we do spread it out, and really put the pressure on the defense,” Lippe said. “If they take one thing away from us, we like to think we can hurt them with something else.” Center Nick Berlick is a key to this offense, because he’ll be snapping the ball to different places and will need to know what he’s doing. Lippe is thrilled

with how Berlick has handled the assignment. Defensively, Lippe will run a five-man front with two or three linebackers. He said in a run-first conference like the Central Lakeshore, he will sell out to stop the run and make teams try to beat the Warriors through the air. There are 47 players in the program — a solid number. But many of the varsity players this year are young, and Lippe doesn’t feel he has enough depth yet to go the two-platoon route — something he said he badly wants to do in the future. Two sophomores will start on varsity, as will freshman offensive guard Cody Stageman, a 510, 210-pounder who the former college OG Lippe likes a lot. Lippe expects to get a real idea of where his team is on Saturday. “I don’t have a good baseline read right now,” he said. “I have so many questions. Our team goal is to make the playoffs this year. I think that’s important to our program.”

Nobody said building a high school football program from scratch was easy. Oh sure, things looked promising enough back in 2003, when the Sheboygan Lutheran varsity squad went 3-6 in its first year of existence, then followed that decent debut with a 4-5 second season. But perhaps the buzz of newness wore off, because the Crusaders went 2-7 in 2005 and then, hampered by lack of participation and depth problems, suffered through three straight seasons without a Central Lakeshore Conference victory. Now, though, it seems that third-year head coach Matt Zavada has pulled the Crusaders out of their nosedive and the program is ascending. “I’ve been telling our kids, our goal this year is to make the playoffs,” said Zavada. “As a coach, I can now legitimately say that. The seniors really want it, and we will be upset if we don’t get it. It’s our No. 1 goal. That said, we will definitely take it one week at a time. But we should have a winning season this year.” Things look good on paper for the Crusaders, who return nine starters on offense and 10 on defense, have enough players to completely separate the varsity and JV teams (last year, several players had to double-dip), and have 70 kids between 5th and 8th grades in the Sheboygan Youth Football league. Now a co-op program, Lutheran/Kohler/Sheboygan Christian features a diverse mix of players from each of the three schools. In terms of scheme, the Crusaders run a ground-based I-formation attack. Just a few years ago, the Crusaders weren’t big enough or physical enough — especially up front — to do that, so they threw, threw and threw

This year’s team will feature a thunder-and-lightning running back duo, with big fullback Zach Webster (240 pounds) serving as the former and cat-quick Alan Rodriguez acting as the latter. They’ll line up in straight “I” or a split-back look. Last season, in the Crusaders’ win over Stockbridge, Webster carried 42 times for 149 yards and three touchdowns. He’s gained 15 pounds since then. And the speedy Rodriguez, who Zavada calls the pound-for-pound toughest player on the team, had 686 yards rushing last fall. When Zavada really wants his offense to get physical, he’ll bring in a second fullback, talented Michael Krueger (210 pounds), and run a power-I. Four starting linemen return, and Zavada likes their size and attitude. Quarterback Jacob Kanz is a three-year starter. On defense, Krueger, just a junior, is getting college attention, Zavada said, because he runs a 4.8 40. At 210, he’s not big for a

defensive tackle, but he’s so disruptive, the Crusaders like him there. Connor Duchow is one of three team captains and solid at defensive end and Jon Stinson is a three-year starter at safety. “We had our scrimmage last Saturday, and it’s the best I’ve seen our defense play in my three years here,” Zavada said. “We were flying to the football, making plays.” Nine players will start both ways, but Zavada said there’s enough depth now to rotate subs in. This was a strong offseason for the Crusaders, who, Zavada said, had about 90 percent participation in the weight room. Two years ago, when he took over as head coach of the Crusaders, Zavada said he saw something special in a hungry group of sophomores. Now, he expects big things from his 12 seniors. “We might have something special going this year,” he said. “I know we’re overlooked. But we don’t mind that. We’re right where we want to be.”
