Cooler temperatures will be headed our way soon and to be honest, sweater weather is pretty cozy. Not only does it give you an excuse to break out your chic cardigans as well as ridiculously comfy oversized sweatshirts again but it is also the perfect time to head outside to get your heart rate up. Our health is our biggest asset so it’s crucial to take proper care of it. Regular exercise is not only great for your body but it’s also wonderful for your mind. Day to day stresses can be overwhelming at times so be sure to take time for yourself through it all. A splendid escape that I adore is taking time for yoga. Ryanne Cunningham is the owner of Flow Yoga Studio in De Pere and offers insight on her story as she makes an incredible impact in the community. If you haven’t dabbled with yoga yet, I highly recommend it. It’s also imperative to ingest meals and beverages that will give your body the natural fuel it has truly been craving. Charlee Wilson gives us a bird’s eye view of why Nectar will likely become a staple in your life. So, take a deep breath and allow your stresses to fade away. Get out there, pick up a yoga mat, grab a tantalizing smoothie and head to a class where your mind as well as body will feel refreshed. Plus, you’ll likely make some stellar new friends that could turn into life long bonds.

The Zen Of Sweat Equity Ryanne Cunningham’s Big Dreams Reap Huge Accolades STORY BY MEGHAN DIEMEL PHOTOS BY MIKE PETERS

S

weat, determination, hard work and shedding a few tears — it’s the recipe for success for Ryanne Cunningham, 39, owner of Flow Yoga Studio in De Pere. The yoga studio, which provides small to medium sized yoga classes, places an emphasis on hands on adjustments for each person in every class. Cunningham, who also owns Advanced Massage Therapy, says she and her instructors want each student to learn at his or her own pace and to learn proper alignment of the yoga poses.

ing a published author and working with players from the Green Bay Packers, it was not love at first pose for Cunningham. Though she had an aunt who encouraged her to practice yoga, it wasn’t something she was excited about at first.

“We offer a lot of classes that tailor to beginners, so people can learn the foundation, the basics and build their way to a more advanced practice,” she explains.

“Ryanne ensures that I never stagnate but instead push forward to new accomplishments,” she adds. “Although challenging, she instills fun into the practice as well. She also offers alternate poses to address individual student’s needs and abilities.”

While Cunningham’s career highlights include two successful businesses, becom-

“I was an athlete growing up too and when I was in high school she really encouraged me to go to yoga to stretch. The first class I went to, I absolutely did not like,” Cunningham laughs. “I felt like it was too slow and I was not impressed. But after high school I started back into it and that’s when I started liking it.” Cunningham says there are many benefits to practicing yoga, including more flexibility, which will decrease pain or discomfort that may be lingering throughout the body, as well as lower stress levels, improved sleep patterns and increased alertness. With Vinyasa flow, the style of yoga Cunningham most often focuses on, moving the body in a rhythm with the breath can help those who practice to relax and recharge. “What yoga will do is take your mind off everyday life so if you’re planning ahead or thinking about earlier in the day, whatever it is, yoga will challenge your body and take your mind off of life for that hour or hour and half class that you’re in,” she explains. “It brings a healthier lifestyle and increases happiness.” Debbie Wickman has taken class from Cunningham for 15 years. She says Cunningham is able to strike a careful balance between pushing students and ensuring they recognize their own limitations to prevent injury.

>>> ZEN CONTINUED FROM PAGE 6 field athlete, and current marathon runner, yoga also improved the mental aspects of sport and life. “Ryanne is my favorite yoga instructor because she is extremely knowledgeable about yoga and the body and how they relate to one another,” Flucke states. “Her vast knowledge and continual learning allow her to alter yoga classes to fit what her students need, even if her students don't know what they need. “I love that she is able to run a fast pace class with a lot of inversions one day and a slower, flexibility focused class the next day that both challenge me and push me to new places. Her classes are always exciting and different,” she adds. The praise for Cunningham doesn’t end at the local level. Having practiced yoga for nearly two decades, alongside her massage practice at Advanced Massage Therapy, Cunningham saw a unique opportunity to improve the lives and careers of several clients who just happened to don green and gold uniforms on Sundays. “As I was massaging the [Packers] players, I could tell where their muscle tightness was,” Cunningham explains. “I told them to come in to the yoga studio. When I looked at the players and their different positions on the field, I started tailoring yoga for athletes to help them stay more loose and injury free and achieve quicker recovery time for them. It just blossomed and word spread.” Not only did her program receive accolades from the likes of Randall Cobb, Michael Neal II, BJ Raji and Tramon Williams, but her ability to tailor yoga to athletes also garnered the attention of players from other teams, who will take classes from Cunningham when they are in town. The additional attention she received from working with Packers players, 8 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | FALL 2017

both at a local and regional level, led to an article in the Yoga Journal and another for Women’s Health. Never one to rest on her laurels, Cunningham decided her next move was to write a book, “Yoga for Athletes.” She’s also expanded her yoga classes to outside the physical walls of Flow Yoga, inviting people to join her for yoga at Titletown Brewing Company, the Bay Area Humane Society, in local parks, vineyards and even sushi restaurants. “What’s really fun for me is bringing a community together to have fun,” says Cunningham. “l like to see people have fun and laugh. I guess it’s the entrepreneur in me that likes to work with other people and bring people together.” With two businesses Cunningham says she does her best to balance them but admits some days are better than others. She says she’s always lived by Colin Powell’s quote, “A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.” Tears are also part of the equation, adds Cunningham with a laugh. The quote has not only helped guide her through establishing both businesses but it will no doubt serve as a beacon in future endeavors. “That fits me in my life for the past five years, and probably the next five or 10 or 15 years,” she says. “I dream big, and I’m a very wishful person, but in order to make them happen I’m a hard worker and I make a lot of sacrifices. Being an entrepreneur isn’t easy, so sweat, determination, hard work and tears is 100 percent me.”

A Space For Friends, Family And Fancy Footwork BY LAURA BROULLIRE

Elizabeth Powers was not on the fast track to opening her own dance studio a decade ago. The former high school science teacher and dance coach, already busy with three kids at home, was content to continue giving private dance lessons on her own schedule. But all that changed, she says, when some of her students’ parents gave her a not so gentle nudge and found her some studio space. That’s when Power of Dance was born.

“When I called (my sister and fellow choreographer) Theresa (Perenick), she kinda laughed and said, ‘That’s crazy,’” recalls Powers about opening their own studio. “I was terrified to do it.” But terrified or not, Powers and Perenick took a leap of faith and began scheduling classes at a 4,000-square foot dance space in Howard that was still under construction. “We were set DANCE CONTINUED ON PAGE 10 >>>

The business relocated in 2011 to its current facility at 2490 Lineville Road, which has 9,600 square feet of space with four studios. Today Power of Dance enters its eleventh season as the only All Star dance studio in the area offering youth classes, ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, pom and more. The awards garnered by Power of Dance students are as many and varied as the classes they offer. Powers says her students have received bids to compete at Dance Worlds, “it’s the Olympics for dance”, for each of the last six years. to open in the fall (of 2007),” Powers says. “It was late July. We had 90 students signed up and I was like, ‘We don’t have a floor!’” “It kind of came out of the blue,” adds Perenick. By the time classes began, the studio was finished and the sisters had more than doubled their enrollment. Powers says she knew they were going to need more help so they turned to Perenick’s college roommate Dawn Schirmacher. “We called her the first day,” Powers says. “She’s a natural. We call her our secret weapon.” Schirmacher, who was looking for a full-time job in the area, says coming to work at Power of Dance was an easy decision. “It was just perfect timing,” says Schirmacher, who manages the studio’s front desk and “does everything else but teach.”

Their roughly 400 students range from 2-year-olds to adults, Perenick says, and she learns something from every class she teaches. “I work a lot with our youngest kids,” Perenick says. “It’s so fun to see things start to click for them. And everything is funny; they don’t have the same inhibitions as adults. With the teens, they are just so excited to share their lives with you even if it has nothing to do with dance.” “When the kids walk in, they feel like it’s home,” Schirmacher adds. STRONGER

WITH EACH NEW STEP The Bellin Women’s Half Marathon BY LAURA BROULLIRE

“Stronger”

is the motto for this year’s Bellin women’s half marathon, and race officials and participants alike agree the third annual run will be the best yet. And sorry guys, this race is all about the ladies.

Green Bay’s female friendly running event, the first of its kind in Wisconsin, will be held October 6-7. Race director Linda Maxwell is quick to point out this is not your typical, run of the mill 13.1-mile race. “We have a lot of special touches to make the experience more fulfilling,” she says. On the night before the big run, Maxwell says she’s excited to invite participants to a pasta dinner and inspirational program featuring keynote speaker Colleen Kelly Alexander, an athlete who’s survived autoimmune disorders, brain surgery and a near fatal bicycle accident to become a competitive triathlete. “Friday is as much a part of the experience as the actual run,” Maxwell says. These events plus a health and fitness expo will be held at Green Bay’s KI Convention Center which is also the site of Saturday morning’s starting line. New this year, a flat and fast course that eliminates the need for starting line busses, has plenty of parking and offers an indoor pre-race gathering area in the event of inclement weather, Maxwell says. The new course, which loops runners

14 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | FALL 2017

south through Ashwaubenon and De Pere and returns them to Green Bay’s CityDeck via the Fox River Trail, is exceptionally fan-friendly, Maxwell says. “There are so many opportunities from a spectator’s perspective,” she says. Whether the women are running or walking the entire 13.1 miles by themselves or splitting the distance with a friend in the relay event, Maxwell says entering a half marathon is a big deal. “It’s important for women to have their children, their friends, their spouses there supporting them,” she says. “It’s an opportunity to show that running is fun. They do it and they enjoy it.”

PRE-RACE EVENTS:

But the fun doesn’t stop at the finish line. Maxwell says a post-race dance party and awards ceremony will immediately follow the finish at nearby Hagemeister Park. Forget boring bananas and bagels; finishers of this half marathon will be treated to desserts, chocolates and non-alcoholic champagne. Each runner will also take home a finisher’s medallion and a long sleeved hooded sweatshirt, Maxwell says. “We really want to give the participants things that they will use to proudly display their accomplishment.”

Packet pickup, expo, women’s inspiration dinner and keynote speaker at the KI Convention Center

One such participant is Jessica Nelson, a West De Pere mother of three who’s run both of the previous Bellin women’s half marathon events. “I like that it’s a women’s race,” Nelson says. “Everyone is so friendly and encouraging. It doesn’t feel competitive.”

FINISH:

Nelson says she started running a few years ago to get back into shape after the birth of her youngest child. She started with a couch to 5K training program, “and then I never stopped.” As her endurance grew, so did her desire to tackle new challenges. “I was like, ‘Okay, I did a 5K. I did the Bellin (10K). I wonder if I could do a half marathon?’” After successfully completing the inaugural Bellin women’s half in 2015, she decided to share the running love with friend Keri Brooks. “I never used to like running. I actually dreaded it,” laughs Brooks, also of West De Pere. “Now I’m obsessed with it.” Brooks says she’d been working out several times a week on her rowing machine last spring “when Jessica targeted me. She wanted a running buddy.” After a bit of arm twisting, Brooks says she agreed to register for the 2016 half marathon relay. “It was my first race ever. I just kind of jumped into it.” She says she had so much fun that she and Nelson are doing all 13.1 miles this October. “I love that race. I love the speaker and connecting with other women,” Brooks says. “For anyone who is looking to do their first half marathon, it’s a good one,” Nelson adds. “The whole weekend, it’s just like a fun girls’ weekend.”

An Event Full Of Heart STORY AND PHOTOS PROVIDED BY JOCELYN BERKHAHN

THE HEART. It’s the first thing an expectant mother wants to hear at her doctor’s appointment. It’s what we tell our adult children to follow when they’re making a tough decision. It’s what we share with our significant other when we marry them. And then there’s the science behind the heart. 18 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | FALL 2017

It’s the hardest working muscle in our body. It pumps nearly 2,500 gallons of blood each day. If you’re happy, sad, stressed or relaxed, your heart reacts. A strong heart could beat more than 2.5 billion times in a lifetime. But an unhealthy heart can’t do all these amazing things. According to the American Heart Association, 40 percent of American adults will suffer from some form of heart disease by 2030. That’s why this year’s 30th annual fashions from the heart fundraiser is more important than ever. Fashions from the heart is a fun filled evening coordinated by the Auxiliary of HSHS St. Vincent Hospital. It focuses on women and heart disease, educates on the importance of heart health and raises money for the HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Heart Center. The dinner, raffle, auction and fashion show will be Tuesday, September 26, at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center in Green Bay (2040 Airport Drive). The fashion show includes area celebrities modeling the latest trends from area shops and boutiques. This year’s featured speaker is Prevea Heart Failure Specialist, Dr. Kendra Marsh-Kates. “Heart disease continues to be the number one killer in both men and women in the U.S. But the support we gain through events like this helps us fight this statistic and continue to bring state of the art technology, prevention, diagnosis and treatment to northeast Wisconsin,” said Chris Brabant, executive director for HSHS-Eastern Wisconsin Divi-

sion and Prevea health heart, lung and vascular services. In the past, generous donations from the event have allowed the hospital to invest in minimally invasive, lifesaving therapies such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), catheter placed pacemaker devices and the latest in coronary stent technology. “At the heart center, we care for thousands of our community members each year, some with minor heart ailments, others with serious heart disease,” Brabant said. “Those who open their heart and support this event are helping to ensure that our friends, family and neighbors receive the best care possible right here in Green Bay, close to home.” Event and raffle tickets are still available for the event. You do not need to be present to win raffle prizes which include a Michael Kors purse and a Chicago shopping and lunch trip for four. A One Stop Detox Shop Nectar Offers Infrared Saunas And Organic Refueling Options STORY BY MEGHAN DIEMEL PHOTOS PROVIDED BY CHARLEE WILSON

As more Midwesterners embrace a holistic approach to their health, what were once retail concepts mainly found on the East and West Coasts are now finding homes in northeastern Wisconsin. Nectar, a Wisconsin-based organic and non-GMO juice, smoothie and infrared detox sauna bar, features two such concepts in one location. “The concept of a juice bar and infrared sauna lounge has been done on the [coasts], however, combining them had not been done yet, to my knowledge,” explained owner Charlee Wilson, 25. “After learning so much about full body balance during my schooling, I wanted to encompass a full service, ‘one stop shop,’ – detox in the saunas and refill your tank with clean, organic fuel.” Wilson says that because the environment is filled with tens of thousands of chemicals found in our food, water, air, household cleaners and body products, the need existed for a business like Nectar. “Using locally sourced ingredients, when in season, we create an array of nutrient dense creations,” says Wilson. “Seasonally, we offer detox soups, hot chia pudding and cleansing ciders. “I wanted to create a welcoming environment where you weren’t met by ‘juice snobs,’” she adds. “Being a farm-to-table type area, I knew Nectar would blossom immediately. I wanted to really create a staple for northeast Wisconsin, somewhere they knew they could always rely on for genuinely handcrafted organic products.” Wilson says her journey into understanding whole body health and choosing to eat organic foods began in 2011. As an intern with an integrative holistic practitioner at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, she focused on meditation, hypnotherapy, power of intention, breath work, mindfulness and other holistic practices relating to the health of the mind and body. Once college ended for Wilson, she wanted to bring what she learned back to her home state, which led her to open the first infrared sauna detox lounge in Wisconsin. Wilson says the saunas are perfect for detoxing the 20 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | FALL 2017

body all year round, as well as an excellent remedy for the winter blues during our long winters. After sitting a spell in the sauna, the juice bar options allow patrons to refuel with organic, vegan and gluten free options, which Wilson says they take seriously when creating recipes. “I designed all the ‘first menu’ recipes that we launched with back in 2016; my team and I work hard to bring new, healthy, seasonal flavors for Wisconsinites to enjoy,” she explains. “We base our recipes around ‘super foods’ and nutrient dense items that are uncommon in the everyday food you might consume. “Taking daily vitamins is wonderful,” Wilson continues, “but you can't always trust the brands are completely transparent with the amount of nutrients or vitamins in each dose. We always make sure each recipe is balanced and always only has natural fruit or vegetable sugar, never white or processed sugar or fruit flavored syrups.” Wilson is now looking ahead to further expansion of what is offered at Nectar. Not only does she plan to add meditation and chakra balancing classes, but additional storefronts for Nectar are also in the works. “Eventually, Nectar will be located in the unique hubs of Wisconsin; currently we're focusing on our Appleton location,” says Wilson. “We are working with the River Heath project in downtown Appleton to bring Nectar to the Fox Valley, hopefully, in the late spring, early summer of 2018.” For more information about Nectar, visit nectarofgreenbay.com.

Strengthening Your Body And Community After Baby BY HANNAH FENN It takes around nine months for our bodies to grow new life, a miraculous feat. We are transformed emotionally, mentally and physically as the new role of mother sweeps over us. Life is not the same and our bodies aren’t expected to be either. We may be eager to begin exercising postpartum and feel again what we are capable of in addition to caring for our children. But to tread slowly and be gentle with ourselves is key. Many moms report not feeling like themselves again until nine months or even a year after giving birth. Our workout routines will likely look different than they did in our pre-child lives but there are still a lot of options out there. Inspirations Dance and Fitness in downtown Appleton takes a family approach and offers classes where mothers can bring their children with an emphasis on well-being. “We are a family friendly fitness boutique,” says owner Tricia Schewe. “It’s 100% open concept and we have a kid’s area right next to our workout area. The littles watch their moms while playing, or start to mimic their exercises. Children are always welcome here.” Schewe envisioned a fitness spot for all

women, including mothers who wouldn’t have much of a chance to workout unless their children were with them as well as working mothers who didn’t want to be away from their kids after spending hours in day care. And she has succeeded. “I like Inspirations because it isn’t just a place to workout, it’s a community of mothers who care about one another,” says Mackenzie Vandenber, mother of one in Appleton. “We give advice, share stories and sweat together. Some moms are breastfeeding at the barre; some are holding toddlers while doing squats and we all push each other.” Becoming a mother can bring a multitude of experiences, some deeply joyous and some insanely challenging. Without a support network, the days spent at home alone, rocking a newborn and chasing a toddler can be isolating. Having a destination where you can meet new mom friends while strengthening your body makes the task of getting out the door less daunting. “I think it’s important, especially as a new mom, to find time in the day to do something for yourself,” says Vandenber. “Being a mom

can be emotionally and physically draining so having Inspirations to exercise at while my daughter gets to socialize with other kids has been amazing.” Even the high intensity classes at Inspirations can be modified to gentler versions for those who need it. “Our space is a no judgement zone,” says Schewe. There are also great resources online for new mothers to begin working out at home once they’ve been given the okay by their midwife or doctor to begin physical activity after giving birth. Following along with a YouTube yoga series or finding “fitspiration” on Instagram (try searching tags such as #postpartumprogress, #postpartumfitness or #postpartumjourney) may help some ease into their exercise routines before they feel ready to leave the house for a class. “I hear a lot of new moms say they want their pre-baby body back,” says Schewe. “But I’ve noticed that a strong body often becomes the new goal.”

...is to spend time together as a family while you have fun, learn, and get fit after school and work.

New And Endless Options With Wallpaper And Faux Finishes BY LAURIE KIMPS Decorative painting and wall coverings are making a comeback as a popular part of design. The thought of suggesting that you add some texture to a design with a faux finish or wallpaper does not always appeal to people. Many have said to me, “you must be kidding? It took me days to take my wallpaper off!” Not to mention, faux finishes were never easy. No one could ever forget that awful sponge painting attempt that looked more like paint blotches done by a two-year-old. No need to worry anymore, decorative paints and wallpaper have changed drastically from what we all remember. The experiences of the past are not fully reflective of the present. Many of the wallpaper patterns that are currently available can be put up with no prep work to the wall and are even easier to remove. Sounds too good to be true, right? New advancements have really changed the entire design industry by creating better and easier products for consumers to use. Today, wallpaper is being used mostly to accent a wall or a piece rather than an entire room. Choosing a wall to accent with wallpaper or a faux finish can create super stylish statements in no time at all. The patterns today are endless. Depending on your style, you can choose designs ranging from traditional to modern. An ombré effect is a soft, subtle and modern effect that can add dimension and an array of color to a wall while grass cloth brings an element of organic and natural feel to any style. Joanna Gaines' ever popular shiplap look has become a huge trend recently. Along with shiplap, rustic brick and wood designs are easily achievable and affordable by using wallpaper. Unlike real wood and bricks, wallpaper is easy to remove because it will not damage your walls when you decide it is time for a change. You can even achieve these looks if you live in an apartment or a rental because many of these patterns are even available in "stick on, peel off" products. If you currently have a solid color accent wall, try adding wallpaper or a faux finish to update your room and add some texture without redoing

the whole room. Lastly, let's talk about faux finishes. A faux finish look is no longer as in depth and specialized as before. Many of the products used in the past were of lower quality and had many steps. The end result was hard to achieve unless you really had some prior experience, because of that faux finishes left people unhappy with the end product. Today, many of the faux finishes are done “straight out of the box.” This way may ease your hesitation in trying faux finishes again if your last attempt left you unhappy. These finishes have not only been made easier to apply but also more user friendly. Today's advancements have created more latex and acrylic based products that work well and that are safer for you and the environment. TV shows, websites and YouTube videos have created a huge interest in these decorative finishes. Faux finishes have a variety of ways to be done. Different types of plasters, shimmery and translucent glazes, organic textures and rich wood tones are ways to get the finish you desire. The options are truly endless and it is a great time to turn your creative ideas into a reality. Laurie and Craig Kimps are third generation owners of Kimps Power Center in Green Bay. 22 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | FALL 2017
