COVER ARTIST
Lyle Lamont COVER ART: “I’ll Always Return to Ephraim.”
Cover exemplifies Ephraim artist’s quest to capture the feel of Door County At times, it’s hard to leave a place. Still, you have to go. But, turning around for one last look helps you to remember the sites, the sounds, and the feeling of being there. In “I’ll Always Return to Ephraim,” painter Lyle Lamont, portrays a scene that many people observe as they look back while heading south from the picturesque village. The painting is displayed on the cover of this issue of Key to the Door Illustrated. It shows the Ephraim beach, tall grass and Eagle Harbor and boathouse in the foreground and church spires punctuating the green hills beyond. “That’s a popular spot, especially to people who have stayed in Ephraim,” Lamont said. “To me, the twin spires of the churches are the things that capture everyone’s imagination as they are driving to Ephraim or leaving, as well as the white buildings against the green (trees). It is just a beautiful view.” White is often the predominant color in paintings and photographs of Ephraim, but Lamont, who has an aptitude for painting trees and a full palette of colors for portraying Door County, lavishly uses green in his oil on linen painting, which is 40-inches-wide by 30-inches-high. “And it has more detail up close, and the background is a little more impressionistic with less detail and precision,” he said. Lamont, owner of the Red Door Gallery, 3050 Cedar St. in Ephraim, creates Door County landscapes in oil and pen and ink drawings. He works from a studio in a two-story coach style building (garage below and studio and gallery above).

>> STORY BY DONNA MARIE POCIUS
COVER ARTIST With his wife Nancy, he moved to Door County in 2006 after holding the position of national creative director for Walgreens in Deerfield, Ill. Lamont handled print advertising and in-store signage and teamed up with an ad agency for television commercials during a period of rapid growth for the drugstore chain. While employed at Walgreens, he did pen and ink drawings and some watercolor painting, too. He associates getting started with oils with time he spent with Robert Bentley, an Ellison Bay-based painter of landscapes and portraits and former Key to the Door Illustrated cover artist. “After a few sessions of working with Bob, it gave me a whole new direction. And I haven’t looked back since,” Lamont said. “It has been a really great experience. I really love oils.” His process often begins with pencil sketches and photographs; the latter are used to capture details of architecture. Then, he paints in his studio, where he also shows work for sale and invites the public to ask questions. His art is also available at the clubhouse at Horseshoe Bay Farms, Egg Harbor, and online at reddoorgallery.com. Lamont’s landscapes often depict hidden Door County areas such as paintings that refer to these areas like, “Shivering Sands Creek” and “Maple Syrup Time.” But he paints iconic sites, too, such as his “Ledges of Cave Point.” He said he uses loose, bold and spontaneous strokes to capture the backgrounds and contrasting fine detail to emphasize a focal point. His landscape paintings, generously sized, are “statement pictures,” Lamont said, which people like to have for areas like family rooms. Giclée prints of some of his most popular paintings, including “I’ll Always Return to Ephraim” are available. The original of the Key to the Door cover painting is also for sale. One of Lamont’s collectors appar-
ently likes to look at his painting of cows in a field as he has breakfast every morning in an area north of Milwaukee. “I have collectors, some of whom have half a dozen of my paintings. It’s a slow build, but I’m really not in a hurry. I’m really trying to capture the feeling of Door County,” Lamont said. Another area he enjoys capturing is the Cotswolds. He creates pen and ink drawings of that west-central England area. In fact, Lamont and his wife have visited more than 250 Cotswolds villages and made detailed sketches of the sites. “It’s not unlike Door County in a way: a very diverse countryside. It goes back to the 1200’s and 1300’s, and is loaded with yellow limestone buildings, stone walls, singletrack roads, and old churches. It’s a fascinating place and quite large,” he said. His plans include publishing a book on drawings of the Cotswolds. He is also getting ready to take a class in portraiture with Craig Blietz, a Sister Bay-based painter and art instructor. “I think it’s important to keep learning,” Lamont said. Door County’s town and village roads are lined with art galleries and working studios, giving residents and visitors countless opportunities to explore the peninsula’s contemporary arts scene. The crown jewels of that scene, however, are neither private gallery nor studio. They are the free public galleries, comprised of a Sturgeon Bay art museum, an Ephraim arts center and four art galleries scattered from Sturgeon Bay in the south to Sister Bay in the north. The 2010 is dotted with highlights. The Peninsula School of Art in Fish Creek, home to the Guenzel Gallery, is again hosting its renowned Plein Air Festival. The venerable Miller Art Museum in Sturgeon Bay is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, and its summer exhibition devoted to founder, and beloved Door County artist, Gerhard C. F. Miller will be a must-see. Also marking its 35th anniversary is the esteemed Birch Creek Music Performance Center, which opened its own free public gallery two years ago. The Melzer Gallery is located in the new rehearsal facility at Birch Creek, located three miles east of Egg Harbor on County Highway E. That first year, the gallery showcased, “Birch Creek Through Lens and Brush,” an exploration of the music center as a source of inspiration for visual artists. In 2009, “Birch Creek Associates − Celebrating 20 Years” featured photography that documented the work and successes of Birch Creek’s volunteer corps. This year, to commemorate Birch Creek’s 35th anniversary, the Melzer Gallery will feature the exhibition, “Celebrating 35 Years.” It will open May 7, 2010 and run through April 17, 2011. In the exhibition, photographs chronicling Birch Creek’s history also will shine a spotlight on the organization’s faculty and students, as well as visits from notables, Woody Herman and Libby Larsen. Also of interest to visitors are the photos that appear in the back hallways of the Birch Creek barn, which illustrate the ongoing history of Birch Creek, and the artwork that is hung throughout the new rehearsal center. This includes original oil paintings, ink drawings, fabric work, posters and photographs. The Melzer Gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily during the concert season, with extended hours on concert evenings. During the offseason, visitors must call ahead to arrange a tour. Also, Birch Creek requests that visitors call ahead if they would like to see the photographs hanging in the barn halls. And that’s just one of Door County’s public galleries. There are six more to explore in 2010.
GUENZEL GALLERY Housed in a round barn on the Peninsula School of Art’s Fish Creek campus, the Guenzel Gallery is designed to exhibit local, regional and national artists, educate audiences, encourage collaboration between artistic disciplines and link them with the school’s programs. The gallery celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2009 and is open year round. EXHIBITIONS & EVENTS: April 16 - July 10: “The Medium is the Message,” with an opening reception and art-making event at 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, April 17, and a gallery talk with Deborah Oden on Friday, July 2. The exhibition will feature artwork ranging from Charles Munch’s large-scale oils addressing environmental issues, to Erika Simmon’s cassette-tape, rock-star portraits. Artists’ statements will add layers of understanding, and a dedicated wall becomes a canvas for public expression. >> CONTINUED ON PAGE 19

MUSEUMS Door County history takes on a haunted feel in 2010 >> STORY BY PAMELA PARKS
History, legends and lore will abound this summer at the Door County Maritime Museum, as its newest exhibit, “Ghosts! Haunted Lighthouses of the Great Lakes” opens. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the exhibit explores the apparitions that have become ingrained in the history of several area lighthouses, including three Door County favorites — Sherwood Point, Pottawatomie on Rock Island, and Chambers Island. The hauntings cover an interesting gamut — a cat, a friendly lighthouse keeper’s wife, eerie sounds of doors slamming, unusual smells, and moving objects. Several tales of ship hauntings will also be explored. Creating an authentic experience, guests will enter what appears to be a lighthouse built inside the museum. Once inside, tests of extra sensory perceptions and interactive displays recreate the legends in spirit. Although thrilling, Desh says not to expect a haunted house atmosphere. “We are exploring the history and legend of the haunting,” said the museum’s Executive Director, Bob Desh. “There will be re-creations of the aberrations but … it will be educational.” Open daily 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 29 through Sept. 6. Fall and winter hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 120 N. Madison Avenue, Sturgeon Bay. Admission: Adults $7.50, Youth (ages 5-17) $4, Children 4 & under are free. SERVING BEEF WELLINGTON KNIGHTLY
,)'(4(/53% TOUR Lighthouses cast an alluring beam for county visitors >> STORY BY P.L. ELLIOT
What is that magical allure of the lighthouse? Is it the mystical draw that it casts upon our souls, calling out, perhaps, to that creature within us, who dared to escape the bonds of those primeval waters, only to spend an eternity in remorse longing to return? Or is it those ancient, wild waters’ siren call to adventure that excites and stirs us? Whatever it is about these sentinels of safety and hope, faithful guides for those who ply the lakes, seas and oceans, they are a footprint of our human history upon these shores. If we could not tame the waters, we could, at least, light our way. With 250 miles of shoreline, some of the Great Lakes’ most treacherous waters, and almost 40 islands dotting the coast, Door County presents navigational challenges to even the most seasoned sailor. To protect those who made their living on the lakes, or simply sailed for enjoyment, Door County is home to eleven lighthouses, the second largest collection of any county in the country. As with the shipping industry they serve, lighthouses have evolved over time, keeping up with, and even falling victim to, the onslaught of changing technologies. Most of the lighthouses were built in the 1860’s and 1870’s. The exception is the Pottawatomie Lighthouse, not only the first lighthouse built in Wisconsin, but the first erected anywhere on Lake Michigan. The station was the responsibility of David E. Corbin, War of 1812 veteran, who set the initial light in October, 1837. Corbin was the first of the many lighthouse keepers who would call Door County’s stations “home until automation rendered them redundant. It was a difficult life for anyone − the isolation often bred depression; supplies dwindled, often leaving a family’s welfare at stake.
Eagle Bluff Lighthouse.
For most of the keepers had wives and families. In fact, hoping to ease his dreary existence, Corbin was given a 20-day leave and told to find himself a wife. Twenty days later, he returned to his faithful dog and horse, no wife. He died at the station, a bachelor. Today the lighthouse has been restored by the Friends of Rock Island, which maintain public visiting hours in-season. The Duclons needed no such encouragement. William and his wife, Julia, raised their seven rowdy sons while tending the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, now situated in Peninsula State Park. Serving from 1883 to 1918, Duclon was one of only three keepers who operated this station before its automation in 1926. Now faithfully restored by the Door County Historical Museum, Eagle Bluff station is a “living museum with regular in-season docent-led tours. glimpse into the lives of a busy, loving family − who just happened to run a lighthouse −should not be missed. Of course, it was the operation and maintenance of the station that was the keepers’ number one priority. The constant exposure to Door County’s often severe weather assured there were always repairs awaiting the station staffs. The 1880 Alpena Gale did so much flood damage to the Cana Island station, one-half acre of marshland surrounding the station was then filled in to protect it from future storm damage. Materials used in construction of lighthouse stations were often inferior, causing them to quickly deteriorate in the harsh conditions. Pottawatomie’s original 1837 station was demolished, rebuilt and enlarged in 1858. For its protection, the 1870 Cana Island lighthouse structure was encased in steel panels in 1912. With the amount of hands-on upkeep required of the caretakers, family members were often given their own tasks to carry out around the station. But the keepers and their families were a strong, self-sufficient lot, who looked back on their lives in the service of the waters with pride and fondness. Those who were children recalled the best spots for what had to be the ultimate games of hide-and-seek. One Cana Island keeper and father, Clifford Sanderson, inspired such a strong sense of purpose and fulfillment in his family, his son, Warren, returned to Cana Island as the lighthouse keeper. Today, countless visitors cross the causeway to Cana to visit one of the most popular and photographed lighthouses on the Great Lakes. The island is now a county park and the buildings are maintained and staffed in-season by the Door County Maritime Museum. Access to the 80-foot tower is also available for a small fee. While the history of Door County’s lighthouses has been one of change, there has been one important fixture that has remained a constant − the use of the Fresnel lens. It is the lens that projects the light from the lamp and the fine Fresnel line was the premiere available. Most of Door County’s lights have a visible range up to sixteen miles. Door County waters remain vital avenues of commerce and recreation, and those who sail still depend on the lights for guidance. Today, many of the lights fall under Coast Guard jurisdiction and are closed to the public. However, during the annual Lighthouse Festival (June 11-13), access is offered to facilities normally off-limits. Along with educational programs, a wide variety of tours are available, from walking tours to water tours. For more information contact the Door County Maritime Museum at (920) 743-5958.

The Clearing has much to celebrate in 2010 >> STORY BY PATTI PODGERS
One hundred and fifty years after the birth of its founder, The Clearing Folk School − situated on some of Door County’s most pristine landscape − celebrates its 75th anniversary. It is a tribute to the dedication of thousands of volunteers, students, and staff who have continued to fulfill the mission of a man who dedicated himself to conservation and the environment. Born in Denmark, Jens Jensen spent his youth on his family’s farm working the land. It was there his life-long dedication to native landscaping was born. As a young man, Jensen immigrated to the United States and eventually settled in Chicago, where he pursued his passion for establishing open spaces in the “prairie style.

But for all of Jensen’s accomplishments, it isn’t a park in the heart of Chicago or the estate gardens of an industrial giant that warrant greatest praise. Located in the pristine beauty of the Door Peninsula, The Clearing Folk School is considered Jensen’s highest achievement. Founded in 1935, in the tradition of the living word, Jensen bought the property with the intention of establishing a folk school. Arduously devoting himself to creating a place where the environment would enhance the arts experience, Jensen promoted the concept of The Clearing, as “school of the soil,â€? where urban adults could reconnect with nature. Landscape architecture students would come up to study with him and they helped physically build The Clearing. His connection with the Chicago arts community also benefitted The Clearing, in that he was able to enlist artists to teach classes. Rather than learning from a textbook, Jensen promoted hands-on educational experiences free of credits, grades, or competition. That philosophy continues at The Clearing, today. The class list is rich in the humanities, with such offerings as painting and writing, to wood carving and music, to weaving and metal work. The list is extensive. Currently, the summer session − May through October − offers week-long programs for residential and commuter students. The Winter Program, introduced in 1977, runs eight weeks January through February and features more than 100 day-classes. The summer workshops offer options from one to three-day classes. One-week residential classes most closely represent Jensen’s vision for The Clearing. Tall − at least six feet tall − with a white mustache, bright blue eyes, and a perfect posture, Jens Jensen cast an impressive shadow by all accounts. Walking the grounds of The Clearing Folk School, Jensen’s spirit continues to affect the measure of the land, reflective in its quaint historic buildings to the unparalleled scenic views ‌ the light and shadow in his designs dance along the paths Jensen’s spirit quietly walks. A Senior Living Visitors can also experience the paths Community of this spectacular campus during one of the regularly scheduled two-hour offering today’s weekend tours which begin in spring seniors the options and continue through the summer. they deserve! STATE PARKS >> STORY BY HEIDI HODGES
It’s easy to put your thumb on Peninsula’s prime attractions
Looking at a map of Wisconsin, it’s obvious this peninsula is some place special. The state appears like a big mitten. The thumb − beautiful Door County − juts into the wild waters of Lake Michigan. There is shore up one side and back down the other; picturesque landscape within; fragile land features; and an abundance of flora and fauna, some of it quite rare. Thankfully, visionaries in history set aside parcels for future generations. Today, preserved and protected, there are five fabulous state parks and one state trail. Each has its own character. Each has its own charm. Starting south, Potawatomi State Park sits along the shores of Sturgeon Bay. Sometimes overlooked by tourists in a hurry to get farther north, it’s like a secret treasure. For campers, there are incredible sites nestled against a slopping bluff. Boaters have a wonderful launch with ample parking. The only problem with the place − if you could call it that − is the lack of sandy beaches. But that can’t be helped. Instead, the waterfront focus is on sightseeing and fishing. Zigzag north toward the Lake Michigan side of the peninsula, and the next park you’ll come across is Whitefish Dunes. Now this place is ALL sandy beach and towering dunes; famously so. Conversely, there are no camping sites or boat launch facilities here. It’s the yin to Potawatomi’s yang. If you have time and inclination to explore a little more, you’ll learn the area has a long history. The park’s interpretive center is a mini-museum of Native American artifacts excavated from the park. Head north and cross the peninsula again to the Green Bay water side, and you’ll soon come across Peninsula, one of the crown jewels in the Wisconsin State Park system. It’s old − one of the first parcels of land set aside for a Wisconsin state park. And it’s impressive in every aspect. Camping, swimming, hiking, biking, boating…it’s got it all, and then some. And it’s all set among a backdrop of some of the most spectacular scenery you can imagine. What makes Peninsula unique is how nature and modern conveniences coexist. For instance, the park is home to the American Folklore Theatre, a professional company that along with its original incarnation − the Heritage Ensemble − has been performing for 40 years. There’s a concession stand right at the beach, Internet access and a sporting

goods rental stand. If you forgot your kayak at home, don’t fret, you can rent one here. Now, some might complain that the park is too busy for their tastes. And it is true, the place is hopping … sometimes it takes two parking lots to accommodate all of the beach-goers. But it’s not difficult to get off the beaten path and find yourself in solitude. Farther north − at the very tip of the thumb − is Newport State Park. There is a sense of enormity here, where the waters of Lake Michigan can roll in with such ferocity; it takes your breath away. Of course, it can be subtle and peaceful, too, but in an awe-inspiring way. The history of the place goes back so far, you need a field guide to identify the fossils. Camping here is real camping. You park in a small wooded area, hike it all in and pack it out. It’s work, but it’s so worth it. There are sites along the Lake Michigan shore and a couple of unbelievable, expansive sites along Europe Lake − a clear, spring-fed little body of water. Perhaps the most unique state park in all of Wisconsin is Rock Island. It takes time and commitment to get there … and even more if you plan to camp. Most people access the island by riding two ferries, or, if you are lucky, your own boat. Camping here is a unique experience. But if that’s not your cup of tea, you can still enjoy the park as a day-tripper. You’ll experience land the way it once was: rugged, unspoiled. There are trails and signs of past inhabitation by small communities, lighthouse keepers and a past owner of the island, wealthy inventor Chester Thordarson. When it comes to “spectacular,” the park has it all, including breathtaking vistas, rocky strands against fossil-studded bluffs and unbeatable camping sites. Some people come just for the incomparable sandy beach. All the state parks are designed, in some way or another, to refresh your soul. It’s a bit like re-booting a computer. Spend a few hours or a few days inside one of these places − like beautiful, almost poetic, birthrights −and it’s guaranteed you’ll return with newfound perspective.
